From Me To You...

time to add. Heck, I might as well bring a large suitcase if I have to wait (it is included for free on international flights so woo hoo!). Back to the timeline. I am getting in my car at 4am which means I get up at... you guessed it, 3am. With that annoying sound mocking me, “You could have flown in the afternoon!” it seems to say.

For years now, my alarm has been a blaring, cacophony of sound. An angry klaxon, shrieking at me, “Wake up! Wake Up! WAKE UP! The noise would jar me out of sleep and hurtle me into whatever horrible thing I had decided I needed to wake up early for. Flights I couldn’t miss, children Well this is not a good way to start your day. who had to go to school, deadlines I had to make. Take it from me, all that does is get me angry and Ahem, you get the idea. no-one wants to start a trip angry. So I recently had an epiphany. Why not change my alarm I always manage to book a flight that means I to something soothing? My phone has at least have to get up at 3am. Why? I have no idea. a hundred options to choose from, with many Perhaps that is the cheaper flight, or in the frenzy more that I can download - just as soon as I of making sure I don’t miss out on a deal I ‘forget’ figure out how to do that. My children have had that a relaxing 8am flight means I need to be a ton of different alarm clocks through the years. there 3 hours before which puts me at 5am. Still I remember one that yelled “Get out of bed you do-able. Oh, right, I live almost an hour from the lazy child!” in a Simpsons character’s voice, one airport. So now I need to be in my car, passport that you had to throw at a wall, and the latest in hand, bags packed to the limit (but not over) so version is the most torturous of all. You have to I can avoid checking in. Why not check in online solve a math problem to switch it off. Now the you say? Great idea, but I can never check in problem is something simple like “What is 7x6?” online. I must have been flagged somewhere However at that time in the morning what I hear because I always go through the online process is, “If a train leaves Newark at 10am and the in a vague hope that this time it will be different, cookies need 17 minutes to bake, what color is only to be denied at the final page. “We are the cat?” Not good. sorry but you will have to check in with a ticket agent at the airport.” Great! So there is more I resolved to use something that would gently wake me, ready to start the day with a smile on my face. I found a sweet chiming song that starts quietly, gradually getting louder if you don’t turn it off. Fantastic, I am ready for my 3am wake up call. Funny thing though, I find that I can hate anything that wakes me at 3am, even the sweet, dulcet chimes that seem to mock me anyway. I guess I am just not a morning person. But will I remember that the next time I book a flight? Probably not.

On Our Cover The Poppy Project

Several of our residents are snowbirds and amongst their number are Helen and Peter O’Grady. They spend time here and in England and because of their connection to a small town in the North East of England, a craft project came into being here in Verrado. On a sunny day in October, residents gathered to crochet poppies to be sent back to England to make a display honoring those lost in World War 1. As Helen said, “11 am on 11/11 2018 marks 100 years since World War 1 ended. The poppy is a symbol of this war. Poppies grew profusely in the fields of Flanders where some of the bloodiest battles were fought. In our home town in England they are putting together a display of poppies to commemorate this event. The aim is to have contributions to the display from as many of the allied countries as possible. We have already received poppies sent from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and India. Schools will visit the project and teachers will use it as a learning tool.”

Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

The goal was to make 100 poppies and as of time of printing they exceeded the goal by 21!! On Veteran’s Day it is important to honor all those who serve and this project not only does that, it teaches our children to do so.

Workouts For Seniors

You want to live the healthiest life possible and you realize that to do so, you can’t rely on the same old exercise routine. You need to change it up and adjust your plans as you grow older.

“Many older adults know their fitness routines have to change as they age because of injuries, chronic aches and pains, or even shifts in the exercises they enjoy,” says Julie Logue, SilverSneakers(R) training manager for Tivity Health. “That’s why finding the right health plan during Medicare’s open enrollment period is so important. It’s especially valuable to find a health plan that includes SilverSneakers, which is the nation’s leading fitness program designed exclusively for older adults. It’s much easier to be consistent with exercise when you find a program you love.” Yoga is popular with fitness enthusiasts of all ages, and for older adults, practicing yoga can improve balance, flexibility, mental focus, core strength and breathing efficiency. It can also be a wonderful stress reliever. If you are new to the 18OPA008 ESTRELLA PUBLISHING NOV PRINTER AD.pdf 1 10/10/18 practice of yoga, or if you feel unsure or unstable

during any class, consider using a wall or chair to aid you in your balance for certain poses. Make sure to protect your joints by moving gently into stretches and poses, never forcing your body into any posture. Strength training, sometimes called resistance training, supports bone health and aids in the prevention of osteoporosis, improves your balance and supports a healthy weight. Regular strength training also can make everyday activities easier. Whether it’s dance or another calorie-burning cardio exercise like cycling or walking, getting your body moving is a fun and healthy way to improve your lifestyle. Cardio exercise has also been shown to improve your coordination, agility and reaction time, as well as help you manage your blood pressure and improve cognitive function.

Improvements to your regular exercise routine will support you in your goal of living a healthy life, but you can take the next step with the 3:02 PM support of a program that includes classes, digital tools and workouts designed with seniors in mind.

Managing Depression Sadness and grief are normal human emotions. These feelings can often last for a short period of time. However, when these emotions last for many days or weeks, depression becomes a concern. According to the American Psychiatric Association, depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, depression is among the most treatable of mental disorders. Between 80 percent and 90 percent of people with depression eventually respond well to treatment. Almost all patients gain some relief from their symptoms. It can be difficult to know when feeling down is turning into something more concerning. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, a major depressive episode may include some of these symptoms:

* Persistent sad, anxious or “empty” mood * Feelings of hopelessness * Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or helplessness * Restlessness, irritability * Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies * Decreased energy * Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions * Insomnia, early-morning awakening or oversleeping * Low appetite and weight loss, or, overeating and weight gain * Thoughts of death or suicide * Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment Three steps that can help Step 1: Get screened by a qualified mental health expert. Step 2: Talk to your healthcare provider about a treatment plan. Depression can be managed with the right treatment options. Step 3: Follow a treatment plan closely and take medications as prescribed. Depression doesn’t discriminate. It impacts all races, ages and genders. Keep in mind, if you are ever feeling suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-2738255 immediately.

Gratitude 3 Game Changers

Ever wonder why some people are generally happy? The answer may lay in one-word, gratitude. People with an “attitude of gratitude” seem to be upbeat, positive and energized. Here are just a few benefits of being grateful: 1. Improves our physical and psychological health 2. Increases our energy, quality of sleep and mental strength 3. Reduces negative emotions such as envy, hatred, and anger 4. Increases positive emotions such as love and empathy 5. Helps people recover from substance misuse 6. Reduces depression and improves selfesteem 7. Keeps suicidal thoughts and attempts at bay

Thank You Notes Next time you are at a retail or grocery store pick up a packet of thank you cards. Commit to taking a moment, one day each week, and reflect on three people in your life you are grateful for. Write them each a thank note letting them know why you appreciate them in your life. Imagine going to the mailbox and getting such a note. It is a game changer for all involved. Catch Yourself When you find yourself in a state of worry, fear, self-doubt or self-criticism shift your thinking to things you are grateful for. It is a game changer for you! Submitted by Author Larry Tracey, Executive Director of Youth4Youth.org and Program Director of the Way Out West Coalition

3 Game Changers Catch Others Catch someone around you doing something right and tell them about it. As learned from Ken Blanchard, this shifts your thinking to one of appreciation and will do wonders for relationships whether at work or at home. Imagine if you came home from work and noticed what your family members did right and you told them about it. Would they be surprised? More importantly; How would they feel? It is easy for us to notice what’s wrong. But noticing the good…well, that’s a game changer. By making this a habit you will begin to notice more of the goodness around you. You will see more positive and less negative and begin to see what is right in your world rather than what is wrong. Develop the habit of catching one or more people in your life doing something good daily and tell them about it. Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

#VeryVerrado Veterans in Verrado and beyond. It’s probably no secret how passionate I am about supporting our Veterans, active military, first responders and teachers. I find it suiting that Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Day are both in November. I found the information below at www.military.com. Veterans Day gives Americans the opportunity to celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of all U.S. veterans. However, most Americans confuse this holiday with Memorial Day. What’s more, some Americans don’t know why we commemorate our Veterans on Nov.11. It’s imperative that all Americans know the history of Veterans Day so that we can honor our former service members properly. Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.’” As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans. In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress -- at the urging of the veterans service organizations -- amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

14 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

In 1968, the Uniforms Holiday Bill ensured three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating four national holi- days on Mondays: Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. Under this bill, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to cele- brate the holiday on its original date. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on Oct. 25, 1971. On September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of Nov. 11, beginning in 1978. Since then, the Veterans Day holiday has been observed on Nov. 11.

The difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day Memorial Day honors service members who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle. Deceased veterans are also remembered on Veterans Day but the day is set aside to thank and honor living veterans who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime. Oh yeah, Thanksgiving Day. The next time you run into a Veteran, active duty military, first responder or teacher, thank them for their service. I would like everyone to welcome the CALDWELL’s to Verrado. Although they lived here before, they have returned and planted roots in a new home in Verrado! Nichole and Lee Caldwell have a daughter, Emma and they love spending time together, especially in their new home with a POOL. Lee was born in Delaware and landed in San Diego after the Navy. If you see him around, please thank him for his service. Nichole was born in Wisconsin and grew up in San Diego. They moved to Arizona in 2011 and Verrado in 2012! After landing in Verrado by mistake, looking for a place to buy a bottled water, they decided they had to live here. The trees, greenery and parks remind them of home. They even convinced Nichole’s Mom, Brother and Sister-in-Law to move here as well! Their daughter Emma is 10 and attends Verrado Elementary School. Emma loves Girl Scouts, tennis, running club and art! Nichole and Lee love to spend time with friends and family, as well as, host parties and be involved in neighborhood functions. Nichole and Lee also love to spend time watching movies as a family, especially now that they have a movie room! I met Nichole and Lee when I moved to Arizona from Michigan. We remained friends and stayed in touch through the years. I am THRILLED they came back and decided to stay.

The Doctor Is In Over the last six years, advances in neuroscience have begun unraveling the mystery of a population of cells within the brain called primedmicroglia. Primed-microglia are an inflammatory and destructive form of white blood cell that are triggered after an imbalance of intestinal bacteria called SIBO. These cells cause the slow and steady accumulation of brain injury known as cumulative brain injury. Common brain trauma from run-of-the-mill physical, emotional, and inflammatory injuries results in a small amount of residual brain damage that would have been repaired had it not been for the primed microglia. As the residual trauma accumulates, symptoms reflective of the brain area that is affected slowly begin to form. This process is the primary cause of symptoms in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS, chronic depression, PTSD, and CTE in professional football players. Fortunately, techniques to control these harmful microglia and reverse the cumulative brain injury are capable of putting Alzheimer’s dementia into

16 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

remission. By combining the unique anti-inflammatory power of vagus nerve stimulation along with rebalancing of the intestinal tract and the core components of the Mediterranean diet, researchers are reporting successful reversal of the cognitive features associated with Alzheimer’s dementia. Vagus nerve stimulation is the most powerful and unique component of this regimen. The Vagus nerve carries the signaling from the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system and is completely responsible for the control of normal healthy inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation is a healthy reaction that allows the body to normally repair damaged tissue and fight infections. The most common VNS devices that are available are surgically implanted and only used for treatment-resistant epilepsy and depression. Fortunately, there are VNS devices that can stimulate the Vagus nerve through the skin of the ear that are as equally effective as the implanted devices. This breakthrough is a much needed tool in the fight against Alzheimer’s dementia. © 2018. Nemechek Consultative Medicine. All Rights Reserved.

Health Tips For Busy Moms Mothers are the CEO of the home. Organizing schedules, paying the bills, doing food shopping, managing pick-ups and drop-offs, and making sure everyone is healthy is just part of the job. Unfortunately, because they are so busy taking care of others, many moms often put off taking care of themselves or scheduling their own health appointments. Making your health a priority can help you stay healthy and keep illnesses at bay. Here are a few tips to help: Sleep consistency You harp on the kids about the importance of a good night’s sleep, but when it comes to your own sleep, it’s often the first thing that’s sacrificed. Sleep deprivation is common among moms for a variety of reasons. Make it a priority to get 7 or 8 hours of quality rest each night. Keeping the bedroom quiet, cool, dark and free

from the distractions of devices such as cell phones and tablets can help you relax and sleep. Annual physicals Just like with your kids, proactively seeing a doctor every year can help you tackle health issues head on rather than putting them off until they become a bigger problem. During wellness visits, your doctor will use health indicators like weight, blood pressure and heart rate to screen for common conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Doctors can then recommend treatments to help you stay healthy and feel your best.

Fill prescriptions Your doctor’s treatment plan may include a prescription medication. Doctors advise that it’s important to fill and use the medication as prescribed. If you are not insured, or if your health insurance plan doesn’t cover the medication you were prescribed, you can check a free prescription savings program called Inside Rx which can help save an average of 40 percent off brand-name and 80 percent off retail on generic medications. Boost nutrition You meticulously pack your kids’ lunches, but when it comes to your own, sometimes you eat whatever you can grab. Eating well helps fuel the body and mind, so skip the junk and instead eat wholesome meals three times a day with healthy snacks in between. Stock the fridge and pantry with healthy foods that are easy to eat on the go and always have nutrient-packed snacks, such as dried fruit or nuts. These simple tips will help you prioritize health as you take care of your family, so you can feel your best today and in the future!

Housing Market Managing your Mortgage?

For everything money related there is a manager – your 401K, SEP, IRA, ROTH IRA, etc. Any more acronyms? Throw them in there. To be honest including things that have nothing to do with money get managed. The question is: Who is managing your mortgage? Is there such a thing? Well I’m here to tell you that there is! I often get calls from people wanting to refinance, sell, and buy. I can be like any other loan officer and just take the application and move on. Or I can be an advisor to my clients. So, what this like? For starters, an advisor will ask things like, why now? What’s the purpose? And What’s the goal? Second, the advisor would give options and comparisons. Third, would make sure that you are on your way to accomplish those goals. With my clients, I always look to keep up with

current goals. Some examples are: dropping mortgage insurance, keeping up with mortgage rates to make sure that they don’t have a better chance to lower payments, and checking on home values to refinance and/or drop mortgage insurance. Another example might be keeping up with time frames for certain events; much like foreclosures, short sales, and bankruptcies. The question is, who is managing your Mortgage? Are you on the path for your goal? It’s always a good idea to check and every situation is different. If you don’t have anyone managing your mortgage let’s talk soon. Be Thankful

As Thanksgiving approaches we take inventory of our lives and what we are grateful for. For most of us it is pretty much the same from year to year. Our family, friends, job, health, home etc., things we take for granted the rest of the year. But what if you had few to none of these things? I have spent the last two years travelling between here and Kenya. I have gone to bed with the threat of waking up to war. I have shared my room with rats, snakes, cockroaches and many other crazy African bugs. And I have learned to not take so many things for granted in my life. Working at a children’s home with 184 kids and living in their culture I have seen the poorest of poor. I have lived in the bush and at times without running water, electricity and common conveniences to us here. What I have learned is heart wrenching and joyful at the same time. These kids have come from various situations, some survived near death, torture and other atrocities hard to imagine. They are true survivors. The children at the home have next to nothing, but they are happy! They are given a chance at an education on the 20-acre compound with their own private school. They eat three good meals a day and have dorms with beds and bathrooms. Bathrooms are a true luxury and not easy to find when travelling around Kenya. Usually it’s a cho, meaning a wood hut with a hole in the

ground and you better be carrying tissue with you too. These children also get medical care that very few can afford. Even with these amazing opportunities at the home, they still live in a way that most westerners could not understand. The first thing people here usually say to me is “how awful and sad it must be”, but It’s not. It is obviously not an easy life, but I am humbled to be a part of these kid’s futures and helping make their little piece of the world better. It is not easy but as a group we are making a difference. I can say my experience in living there has taught me to be grateful for not only the big things in life but things that no one here even thinks about. I am overwhelmed when I come back and grocery shop, the technology we have, the ‘I need it faster attitude.’ It is always more of a culture shock for me to return to The States then returning to Kenya since life is hard but simple there. I wish everyone could have the experience of living in a third world country. I sit on the Kenyan side of the board and now that I’m here for a longer duration and working, my purpose is still to help bring awareness about Kenyan struggles and especially the wonderful children’s home that has stole my heart. As this holiday season comes around again, be thankful, be grateful but most of all don’t forget to count the ‘little’ things that we have been blessed with. When the pie burns, the turkey is dry, crazy Aunt Mary lets her mouth run off and you missed that Black Friday deal. Take a breath and step back. Look around at what is important and let it go. After all It’s not really that important in the big picture. This comes from a girl who once was on that side of perfection and admittingly can still go there but has come a long way which is owed all to the hard but simple life, the 184 kids and my Kenyan Friends. The Bug Guy

Before I became part of the pest management industry, I associated the sound of crickets in my yard with a lot of memories of my childhood. While my childhood memories are intact, I now know that the environment needs to be conducive to these pests in order for them to thrive. That distinct sound is created when male crickets rub their wings together (stridulation). This sound is a dinner bell to scorpions. Pests need three things for their survival: water, shelter and food. The elimination of water and moisture is paramount in making your home inhospitable to creepy crawlies. In fact, by simply eliminating, or even reducing moisture, you can greatly diminish the likelihood of infestations of a myriad of pests including sowbugs, pillbugs, cockroaches, silverfish, centipedes, millipedes, crickets, and the dreaded scorpions that eat all of

them. When pest proofing your home, if there’s evidence of any moisture, make a point to check for and fix any leaky water pipes under utility or bathroom sinks and be sure the washing machine lines are intact. Other parts of the house should be water-free as well. Many of our fellow Estrella residents have experienced our monsoon season and need to ensure their homes are properly dried. Otherwise, not only will the pests mentioned above be problematic, but damp wood is especially attractive to termites. With the extensive damage they can cause, it’s essential to take preventative steps now to protect against them. Of course, moisture elimination is only part of the pest-proofing equation. It’s also important to remove offerings of shelter that may be lurking in and around your house. Most spiders and insects come into the lower levels of homes through cracks and crevices. Walk around the exterior of your home and use caulk to seal any openings you see. Pay particular attention to holes from utility lines and plumbing that come into your home. It’s important that you don’t seal off the weep screed, as this is a necessary vent for your exterior walls. If you see a lot of cobwebs in a certain area, there’s a good chance there’s a pest entry point nearby. The last component of pest proofing is the elimination of food sources. Food for scorpions, spiders and other insects, that often infest yards, can be found in a variety of areas. Be sure to keep foliage trimmed back from your home and keep the rocks from piling up to the foundation of your house. As the leaves come down, be sure to remove them from gathering around your house as decaying leaf piles are very attractive to pests. Submitted by Larry Cash, of Estrella Mountain Pest Control

Money Matters Time to Think About Year-End Investment Moves We’ve still got a couple of months left in 2018, but it’s not too soon to start thinking about some year-end investment moves that might benefit you.

Add to your IRA. For the 2018 tax year, you can put up to $5,500 into your traditional or Roth IRA, or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older. You have until April 15, 2019, to contribute to your IRA for 2018, but why wait until the last minute? Increase your 401(k) contributions. You already may be investing in your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, but you should always put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. Make changes in response to life events. In 2018, did you experience a major life event, such as a marriage, divorce or addition of a child? Or did you change jobs or retire? Any of these events could lead you to adjust your investment plans,

so now may be the time to do so, possibly with the help of a financial professional.

Review your investment mix. At least once a year, it’s a good idea to review your investment mix to ensure it’s still suitable for your goals and risk tolerance. Sometimes, even without your taking any action, your portfolio might change in ways you hadn’t expected. For example, suppose you wanted your portfolio to contain 60% stocks and 40% bonds and other investments. After a period of rising prices, though, the value of your stocks may have increased so much that they now occupy 65% of your portfolio – which means you may be taking on more risk than you had originally intended. Consequently, you may need to rebalance your portfolio to get back to your original 60% to 40% ratios. (Keep in mind that everyone’s portfolio mix will depend on their individual situations.) These aren’t the only year-end moves you may want to consider, but they can help you close out 2018 on a positive note. Plus, they can serve as a reminder that you need to be vigilant as you keep working toward your financial goals. Submitted by Wayne Polk, of Edward Jones Investments, Verrado resident

Wine Pairings Forget everything you’ve heard about pairing wines with Brie and apples In the man’s own words, here are Dan Dunn’s pairings. 1. With a big, juicy burger After all of those holiday meals, guys really get a hankering for a burger. Think of a great hamburger as you would a classic artist such as Paul Simon. Both are something special on their own, but when paired with the right partner - be it a robust cabernet sauvignon or a spindly, curlyhaired tenor from Queens - well, that’s when the real magic happens. Alas, Simon and Garfunkel called it quits a long time ago, but I’m happy to report that cab and burgers are still making beautiful music together. 2. With pork For smoky roasted pork, a popular dish around the holidays, you can go with a little richer, heavier red - say, cabernet sauvignon - but try the same thing with a honey or maple-glazed ham and you’ve got a mouthful of clash. For

sweeter preparations, think mid-bodied reds like a bourbon barrel-aged red blend, aged in charred bourbon barrels for 6 months, delivering a finish as smoky as it is smooth. 3. With lamb Lamb is most often associated with Easter. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, eh? There promises to be plenty of lamb in the offing over these festive final weeks of the nothing-if-not-extraordinarily interesting year that was 2018. No matter how it’s cooked - grilled, braised or roasted - that rich, savory meat demands robust red wine at its side, like a nice zinfandel, with its larger-than-life berry fruit character.
