From Me To You... “Welcome to the new normal!” How many times have you heard that recently? And what does your ‘new normal’ look like? Is it much the same as before Covid came crashing into our lives? Are you back to work and socializing, or are you confined to your home, sheltering in place?
I think most of us are somewhere in the middle of those options. Back to work, absolutely, but perhaps being more mindful of who you see and how you take part in social gatherings. Many of you have taken on the role of substitute teacher. I know that is the biggest change in my daily life. My son is enrolled in an online version of high school which involves watching a very dry, pre-recorded, ancient (I am talking early 1990’s) presentation for each subject and participating in tests and quizzes to show his grasp of the knowledge. The problem is that it just doesn’t work. What teenager do you know that can learn effectively this way? Oh, and to add a cherry on top, there are many times when he has answered a question correctly (for example using the word one instead of the numerical value 1) but it was marked incorrect. Frustration is high in our household on those days. I am sure many of you have similar stories to tell and I sympathize with you.
So to help him as much as I can, I have been auditing his classes. As he watches the Power Point presentation, I take notes and think of ways I would have presented that information. I try to explain the lesson in a way that a teenager will understand and absorb. I can do this in some subjects with ease. History? Love it! Sociology? Not a problem. Physics???? Oh dear lord, physics. I purchased Physics for Dummies to help me and I have come to the conclusion that I am indeed a dummy in physics. Not because of the Physics but because of the Math! I have discovered glaring holes in my Mathematical education, in particular Trigonometry and Algebra. Turns out you need a sound grasp of Trig and Algebra to solve the many, many, many equations in Physics. Who knew? So off I went and purchased Algebra for Dummies. I should probably get Trig for Dummies while I am at it ... Turns out that my ‘new normal’ consists of realizing how many gaps I have in my education and trying to prevent that from becoming my son’s reality too. Good luck to you all, whatever your ‘new normal’ is throwing at you!

Lisa Barns’ story: The day my life changed... 6/21/2019 - “Lisa, you have Breast Cancer!” I heard the words, but could not comprehend what was just said...it was all happening in slow motion! The plan was Lumpectomy and Radiation, however, after the pathology results came back and testing was done, I was told Chemotherapy was going to be necessary. Life as I knew it was over, and I started the fight for my health! One thing I learned right away, was everyone I loved and loved me was eager to have something they could do to help. I began a FB page, and titled.. “Enjoying Life is a Habit, Being Happy is a Choice” and on this page I shared my journey with whomever decided to follow it. It was there I put out the word that I would love to receive hats... knowing that my hair falling out was going to be my next phase, I thought, hats would be great to have.. They began to show up daily, from everywhere... My High School, College, Sorority,... Funny hats, Emoji hats.. Even a hat made out of Rice Crispies! My husband, my family, my Verrado Community, my friends from around the country, they were with me every step, and I felt the love from everyone!
they use to kill any remaining cancer! The crazy curly chemo hair, and the muscle and joint pain is something I will be living with for a long time to come. Being positive throughout has been challenging, however I find that when I can smile, or joke.. it helps all my loved ones get thru which in turn, helps me get thru. I love our Verrado Community Arpi Hamilton’s Story: After receiving devastating news in December 2016 at the age of 38 that I had stage 3 Triple Negative Breast Cancer and a 25% chance of survival, my life changed forever. I spent the next year in treatment and doing everything I could to beat it and I did. My husband Jason and my children Natalie and Logan stood by me through treatment and on August 15th 2017, I was declared cancer free. Since then I have dedicated my life to giving back to the cancer community and those battling this terrible disease. My life’s mission is to educate others about the importance of early screenings, provide access to integrative treatment options and assist them into survivorship. I am so blessed that I get to do this for a living now with Cancer Treatment Centers of America. On August 15th2020, exactly 3 years to the day I was cancer free, I was crowned Mrs. Arizona America and I now have the opportunity to give back in an even greater way.
So many bumps in the long road that included being hospitalized for 6 days with fever, contracting Face Shingles, and all the sickness that comes with going thru Chemo and Radiation. The road has been harder than I could have even imagined, and even now, as I try to figure out what Survivorship looks like, I deal with the damage done from the poison 6 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

Get On Your Bike For kids, biking is one of the gateways to growing up. There are plenty of good reasons for anyone to get outside and ride a bike. Especially during this time of social distancing, bike riding offers the perfect opportunity to shake off cabin fever and safely enjoy the fresh air.
Benefits of bike riding For tweens and teens, there are many benefits of owning and riding a bike, including: * It gets kids outside away from screens to enjoy fresh air and vitamin D-giving sunshine. * It promotes cardiovascular health. * It builds muscles, while improving balance and coordination. * It improves mental health by helping to reduce anxiety or stress. * It is good for the environment, offering an
Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine
emissions-free mode of transportation. * It helps build self-confidence and relationships with others who like cycling too.
Safety tips Kids heading out on their bikes should follow basic guidelines to protect their health and safety. Remind your tween or teen to: * Always wear a helmet, even for a short trip. * Be visible by wearing bright clothing and using reflectors or lights to ensure others can see you, especially in the early morning or around sundown. * Always use sunscreen to protect exposed skin from UV rays. * Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. * Stick to bike paths, if possible, rather than riding on the street. * Obey all traffic laws. * Stay alert while riding. * Don’t use ear buds or headphones that could prevent you from hearing traffic or other dangers. * Don’t use your phone or text while riding - stop and get off the trail to use any device. Now is the perfect time to get your kids biking and consider helping foster kids do the same. For more information about the Together We Rise Bikes for Foster Children program or how to sponsor a bike for kids who need one, visit TogetherWeRise.org.

Medicare Part D
Medicare Part D, which helps cover prescription drug costs, has its own terminology. Medicare Annual Enrollment runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, so now is a good time for a refresher on key words to inform your coverage decisions for 2021.
Deductible, copay and coinsurance A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket in a given year for eligible prescription drugs before your plan’s coverage kicks in. The deductible can vary from plan to plan. Some plans charge a copay, a flat fee, each time you fill a prescription. For example, a plan may require you to pay $2 when you fill a prescription for generic drugs and a higher amount for brandname drugs. With coinsurance, you pay a set percentage of the cost of the drug instead of the flat fee associated with a copay. Formulary Part D plans are offered by private insurance companies, and each plan has what’s known as a formulary, a list of the prescription drugs covered under the plan. And keep in mind that plan formularies can change from year to year, so don’t assume that the prescription drugs covered under your current plan will carry over in 2021. Drug tiers A Medicare Part D plan’s formulary is made up of tiers, depending on the cost of the medications. The lower tiers generally include preferred generic drugs, and many plans cover these medicines with low or no copay or coinsurance. Higher tiers generally include brand-name drugs and specialty medications and tend to have higher copays or coinsurance. So, talk to your doctor to see if the brand-name prescription you take can be replaced with a generic version.
of pharmacies, and if you use these pharmacies, you can save money on prescriptions.
The donut hole The majority of Part D plans have a coverage gap known as a “donut hole.” For example, in 2020, you enter this donut hole once your out-ofpocket costs (including deductibles, copays and coinsurance) for prescription drugs reach $4,020. Once you’re in the donut hole, you will pay 25% of the cost of your drugs. In past years, this percentage was higher. In 2020, once your outof-pocket costs reach $6,350, you exit the donut hole and pay a smaller coinsurance. Your Part D plan tracks your out-of-pocket spend progression and should be accessible on your plan website and monthly statements. Visit GetToKnowMedicare.com to access resources to help you prepare and make confident choices.

Meditation
A wave of new research has demonstrated that implementing practices like meditation can increase mind-body awareness/mindfulness, raise self-esteem, improve concentration, strengthen memory and prevent depression. Since yoga and meditation techniques can be done at home, it’s something that anyone can do to support their mental wellness. To make Kirtan Kriya meditations part of your mental hygiene routine, follow these steps: Sit comfortably in a chair with feet flat on the floor or sit on the floor with legs crossed. The key is to be comfortable with the spine straight. Keep eyes closed and breathe naturally as the meditation unfolds. The chant uses the basic sounds, “Sah, Tah, Nah, Mah”, taken from the Sikh words “Sat Nam,” meaning “my true identity.” The thumb is touched to each of the other four fingers in sequence. Both hands perform the same sequence simultaneously.
•When you chant Sah, touch the index fingers of each hand to the thumbs. •On Tah, touch your middle fingers to your thumbs. •On Nah, touch your ring fingers to your thumbs. •On Mah, touch your little fingers to your thumbs. Sing the sounds “Sah, Tah, Nah, Mah” while performing the mudras sequence with the fingers of both hands. At the same time, visualize the sound flowing in through the top of the head and out the middle of the forehead. •For one minute, sing the sounds out loud. •For one minute, use a loud whisper. •For the next two minutes, repeat the sounds silently to yourself. •Then whisper the sounds for one minute and then sing out loud for one minute, for a total meditation time of six minutes. To come out of the exercise, inhale very deeply, stretch hands above the head while stretching the fingers wide. Stretch the spine and take several deep breaths. Relax.

The Bug Guy October! Wow we made it through three quarters of 2020, I know you are probably wondering what is next? La Niña is officially here and will likely stick around through the upcoming winter. The Climate Prediction Center issued a “La Niña Advisory” due to cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures being observed along the eastern equatorial Pacific. This pattern typically pushes the jet stream, or upper-level steering winds, farther north, keeping the storm track away from the Desert Southwest. For Arizona, this means winter will likely be warmer and drier than normal. The news comes after going through the hottest and driest summer on record. 97% of Arizona is in a drought, with more than half the state under an extreme drought. During a La Niña weather pattern we can expect this drought to continue. What does La Niña have to do with bugs? Well with lower temperatures our plants and foliage will recover and with this recovery, provide ample
harborage and forage for bugs and animals. I believe that we will see an increase in insect activity over the next 60-90 days. What are some of the bugs that will thrive you ask? Omnivore insects will be the first to experience a population surge, followed by the insectivore insects. This time of year is also prime termite season, so keep an eye out for termite shelter tubes on your foundation wall. If you find any evidence contact your exterminator for a free inspection! October is also the time when our rattlesnake population begins to wind down and prepare for hibernation. With cooler nights rattlesnakes will seek concrete patios and porches to stay warm before hunting, always look before you step out on to your patio or porch to avoid stepping on a rattlesnake. Five Ways to Fend Off Your Child’s Boredom
Sooner or later, your child may utter the phrase “I’m bored.” Should that time come, here are five ways to help your child learn how to entertain herself. 1. Make a boredom box. Sit down with your child and brainstorm a list of different things she likes to do. Then, write each idea on a different slip of paper and put them all in a shoebox or jar. If your child gets bored, take out the box and ask her to pick out an activity (without peeking). 2. Play a game. It doesn’t matter whether you play a card game, a board game or a word game as long as you play it together. It will help to alleviate his boredom and strengthen family bonds.
3. Ask your child to help you with chores. Some children love to help with housework, such as dusting and cleaning. You can make a game out of seeing who can fold the laundry the fastest or who can sweep up more dust. 4. Head outside. Take a walk, go on a geocache hunt or play catch if your child is old enough. Just remember to bring water and use sunscreen. 5. Let your child be bored. Some artists and writers say that boredom inspires creativity. Boredom might inspire your child to try an activity she hasn’t explored before. Who knows? Boredom may bring out your child’s inner Picasso! When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.
There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.” There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.
• Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current and future sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits. Another strategy used by marketers is using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients and potential future clients with their marketing strategy. Home Sweet Home Negotiating So Everyone Wins
A recent property listed for sale received 12 offers within the initial 4 hours of hitting the local market. The housing supply side is unable to keep up with the demand. In a sellers’ market like this, having the right representation is essential; someone who knows the market as well as being an expert negotiator is key. Which begs the question. How do you negotiate so both sides win? Yes, both sides. I recently read the book, The Power of Nice by Ronald Shappiro. In it he discusses why you would want to give the other side what they want as well. You will most likely get more of what your client wants if you give the other side a little. Make sure you know exactly what you want; know this before you begin negotiating. Know what the other party wants; learn about them a bit, ask questions. Even if you listen to the other side and everyone in the entire deal comes out a winner does not mean that you did not negotiate well. It demonstrates that you were a lot more involved in the negotiations and both sides ended up getting what they want. That is not a bad thing. What truly matters are the results. You must have
14 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine
two parties that want to make a deal, however; they are both there for one simple reason: they want something the other side has. “In order to persuade someone to give you what you want, you have to appeal to what motivates that person, not what motivates you,” says local Verrado resident Nicole Pelcic, Attorney/ Mediator with Affordable Mediation. The best negotiators are the most confidant negotiators. Why are they confidant? Simplethey are more knowledgeable. When you have a lack of confidence it is most likely due to what you do not know. Going into a negotiation prepared is extremely important. The more you know about your client’s goals and, yes, even the other parties’ goals will make the opportunity greater to create a great deal. Negotiating to where everyone wins will give you better results. You will achieve more of your goals and build better working relationships for the future. Furry Friends Election season is now upon us. The polls are now open. Tis the season of Politics. Or should we say ‘Paw-litics’. There are dogged leaders, and then there are actual dog leaders.
Calling all qualified canine candidates… The Verrado Community is looking to elect their very first Dog Mayor of Verrado! What an amazing op-paw-tunity for a canine to emerge as our fearless furry leader of Verrado. One lucky pup will be awarded this esteemed 2-year position as appointed ‘Dog Mayor of Verrado.’ There have been some hushed murmurs of campaign promises including ‘a bone in every dish, a cat in every tree, and a fire hydrant on every corner’. While others hint at ‘mandatory belly rubs’. How will they lead? Iron paw or wagging tail? There is much to consider. Given all of his or her pet-tential time in the limelight,
we will want to ensure our new mayor has been fully ‘vetted’ as well. Nominate your dog today. Tell us why YOUR dog should be selected for this influential position. Your votes and a panel of respected judges will decide which Canine Elect will be the best representative of our beloved Verrado Community. Once elected, a Verrado VIP will present this Canine Elect with an official certificate dubbing him or her as the Dog Mayor of Verrado for a 2-year term. This extraordinary doggy leader will also receive a personalized Legacy Brick at the new Verrado Dog Park with his or her name and esteemed title of Dog Mayor of Verrado. All other contest entrants will receive a fun prize. Don’t delay… please cast your votes today! And may the best doggone canine win! For official rules and entry, please visit www. gogophotocontest.com/VerradoDogMayor Until further notice, our Junior Division’s monthly meetings have been postponed. Midday Slump?
You›ve probably felt it - that time of day when your brain gets foggy and you have trouble concentrating. All you can think of is taking a nap. For some, it happens right before or after lunch, for others in the late afternoon. You may reach for a caffeinated beverage or sugary snack to try to boost your energy, but that only offers a short-term fix. What can you do to keep better energy and focus throughout your entire day? Here are a few tips that will not only help you power through your day better but will also improve your overall health - mental and physical. 1. Give yourself a break If you spend much of your day sitting, taking frequent short breaks to switch up your activity level will help you stay alert. Set a timer on your phone or computer to remind you to get up once or twice every hour to move for five to ten minutes: * Take a brief walk, even just around the house, or march in place * Do gentle stretches to loosen up * Dance to upbeat music, pumping your arms in the air * Tackle a quick errand or chore Anything that gets your blood flowing will perk you up - just don›t wait until you›re already feeling drowsy to take a break. 2. Breathe easy As part of your regular breaks, or even more frequently, sit up straight in your chair and take a few deep breaths in a row to get more oxygen to your brain. Establish a habit, like taking a deep breath after each email you answer, or before a meeting. If you’re home with the kids, encourage them to join you on your movement and breathing breaks.
Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine
3. Add a vitamin and nutrient-packed dietary supplement to your routine Instead of reaching for a sugary beverage or tenth cup of coffee, an energy supplement drink. Vitamins such as A, B-6, B-12, C and E, plus minerals including Zinc, help give your body what it needs to keep going in the afternoon. 4. Get outside Sunshine provides your body with vitamin D, which is a great, natural pick-me-up, and fresh air encourages deep breathing. Just sitting outside for 15 minutes can help boost your energy - but a short brisk walk outdoors is even better. 5. Snack smart When you›re getting that sleepy feeling, avoid the temptation of empty carbs and sweet treats. Try keeping healthy snacks nearby like a container of raw nuts or hard-boiled eggs in your refrigerator so you can snack. The protein in nuts and eggs helps give you some sustained energy without the undesirable effects of bingeing on less healthy snacks. 6. Sleep well Nothing is more important for maintaining your energy levels than getting enough sleep: * Stick to the same bedtime and waking time every day, even on weekends. * Give yourself an hour of «wind-down» time before bed. Put electronic gadgets away and relax with a book, soothing music or warm bath. * Make sure your bedroom is as dark and quiet as possible. * If you occasionally have trouble sleeping, try SleepWorks from AdvoCare, which can help you achieve sound, restful sleep. It contains vitamins, minerals and botanicals, including magnesium, valerian, lemon balm and melatonin, to help you relax and get to sleep soundly. Don›t wait until you›re feeling an energy slump to take good care of yourself. A proactive approach to your health and wellness will help you feel better and stay focused all day long.

with flu. These reductions in doctor visits and hospitalizations can help save medical resources needed for the care of COVID-19 patients. CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get their flu vaccine in September or October, or as soon as possible after that. Talk to your healthcare provider, pharmacy, or health department about getting your flu vaccine. Doctors, pharmacists and other health professionals are putting new procedures in place to keep people safe from COVID-19 during vaccination.
Flu causes millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations, and tens of thousands of deaths in the United States yearly. This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to get a flu vaccine to protect yourself, your family and your community from flu and its potentially serious consequences. There are also some key differences between flu and COVID-19. COVID-19 seems to spread more easily than flu and causes more serious illnesses in some people. It can also take longer before people show symptoms and people can be contagious for longer. Another important difference is there is a vaccine to protect against flu. There is currently no vaccine to prevent COVID-19. The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the virus.
It’s also important to continue social distancing, wearing a mask and washing hands often - all these actions help slow the spread of respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19 and flu. Not sure where to get a flu vaccine? Visit vaccinefinder.org to find a vaccination location near you.
While what will happen this fall and winter is uncertain, CDC is preparing for flu and COVID-19 to spread at the same time. Besides making people sick, this could result in a dangerous public health situation because both diseases can cause serious illness that might require hospitalization. Getting a flu vaccine provides the best protection against flu and is particularly important this year. Flu vaccines help reduce the risk of developing potentially serious flu complications. This is especially important for people with certain long-term health conditions like diabetes, asthma and heart disease. Flu vaccines are also important for people who are 65 years or older who are more likely to get very sick from flu.

Reducing the number of people who are sick with flu also can reduce the burden on our medical systems. More people getting vaccinated can mean that fewer people will need to go to doctors’ offices for flu treatment and testing, and fewer people will need to seek urgent medical care or be hospitalized

Money Matters When you retire, you’ve learned a lot about all sorts of things, helping you avoid some of the mistakes you made earlier in life. However, you may still be susceptible to financial missteps specifically related to your retirement years. How can you dodge these errors? Consider these suggestions:
Manage your withdrawal rate carefully. You will likely need to tap into your retirement accounts – your IRA and 401(k) or similar employersponsored plan. But you should establish an annual withdrawal rate that’s appropriate for your situation. By withdrawing too much each year, especially in the early years of your retirement, you risk outliving your resources. You may want to consult with a financial professional to determine the withdrawal amount that’s right for you. Don’t underestimate health care costs. Once you turn 65, you will be eligible for Medicare, but you may still need a Medicare supplement plan and will probably also incur other expenses. In fact, A healthy 65-year-old couple who retired in 2019 will need nearly $390,000 over their remaining years just to pay for health care.
generally be significantly larger if you wait until your “full” retirement age, which will probably be between 66 and 67.
Don’t invest too conservatively. Once you’re retired, you might think that you should take as few chances as possible with your investments – after all, you simply have less time for them to bounce back from a downturn than you did during your working years. Nonetheless, it’s important to own a reasonable percentage of growth-oriented investments to help keep you ahead of inflation. Don’t be more generous than you can afford. If you have grown children who need financial help, or grandchildren heading to college someday, you’d no doubt like to do whatever you can to provide assistance. However, the hard truth is they simply have more time than you do to find workable financial solutions, whereas if you deplete your funds through your generosity, you could put yourself in a precarious position. By preserving your financial independence, you’ll end up benefiting your family, as well. Retirement can be a wonderful time of your life – and you may enjoy it more by doing what you can to avoid costly financial mistakes.
