From Me To You...

Time is a funny thing. For many years time seemed to go so slowly. Every day lasted an eternity and there was little to distinguish one day from another. I measured my life in seasons or school and no school. Admittedly I was raising four children under 10 and wrangling my life in a new state, but still... I guess it is true that when you have small children the days are long and the years are short. I look back at that time in my life and remember just getting through the day.

Now it is very different. I spent months planning a trip this year. Coordinating schedules with the friends we were travelling with, finding and booking the best place to stay, organizing the things that needed to be taken care of here while we were gone. Then suddenly we were in the car, driving to our destination. The vacation itself flew by and we were home! Blink. Now I am submerged in my life again, that takes no time at all by the way, and looking ahead to other events.

I celebrated a milestone birthday this month and perhaps that is why I am musing on the subject

of time. By all intents and purposes I am now middle aged.

Wow, how did that happen? My parents were old when they hit this birthday, heck they were old 10 years before this birthday! And here I am, feeling the healthiest I think I have ever felt, more secure in myself as a person in my personal life, my marriage and my friendships. And yet. I have this label.

There is a theory in Sociology that is called the Self-Labelling Prophesy. Basically it posits that if you name someone in a certain way then that person will live up to the moniker you give them. The Smart Kid will achieve more success academically, The Bad Seed will feel like there is no point in trying and will continue to act out, The Bad Dog will continue to chew your baseboards and jump on the furniture. And The Middle Aged Woman will get ready for retirement and take up knitting. I don’t think I will go down that way. I already know how to knit and honestly it is not for me.

I have not even begun to do everything I am capable of and want to do. I just have to get to retirement so I have the time to do some of those things! And there it is again. Rushing towards something to be able to do the thing I think I can’t do yet. I need to slow down and be in the moment.

That is a phrase we are hearing a lot recently. It is apt though. We all could do with stopping and appreciating the now. Look around at your life and see what you have achieved already. What is good in your day? Whether it is as big as buying a new house or as small as checking off an item on your to-do list. Savor it. Enjoy the victories and don’t let time drag you along in its wake.

Donna was a breast cancer survivor...shortly after being treated she died from brain cancer.

Donna Bloomstadt, 52, of Litchfield Park died June 8, 2017, in Litchfield Park.

Mrs. Bloomstadt was born Dec. 19, 1964, in Mineola, Long Island, New York. She graduated from Cal State Polytechnic University in Pomoma, Calif., with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She worked for Nordstrom for more than a decade, becoming a regional buyer and earning sales achievement awards.

She moved to Arizona in 2004 and worked as director of admissions at Trinity Lutheran School in Litchfield Park. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Litchfield Park.

She is survived by her husband, Gary Bloomstadt of Litchfield Park; one son, Kyle Bloomstadt of Litchfield Park; her mother, Irene Richie of Surprise; and one brother, Eric Kirsch of Steubenville, Ohio.

Buckeye - Heather Ann Renshaw Diedtrich passed away December 11, 2018 in Buckeye, AZ. She was 47 years old. She is survived by two boys, Alexander and Charlie, her husband, Shawn, her parents, Carol and Thomas Renshaw, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Her brother Jeffrey Renshaw, pre-deceased her. Heather grew up in West Hartford, CT and graduated from Conard High School, class of 1989. She graduated from Wooster College in Ohio, where she studied teaching and history. After college, she lived in Minneapolis, MN, Concord, NH, and finally Phoenix, AZ. While in Phoenix, Heather earned an Interior Design degree and later a Master’s Degree in Teaching. When she passed, she was working in the job of her dreams, as a second grade teacher at Littleton Elementary School. Heather was a kind and strong person who always saw the beauty in the world. She had a wonderful sense of humor who will be missed by friends and family all over the world.

My story starts with a conversation I had with a good friend over drinks. We were talking about her daughter who had died of breast cancer several years ago. Later that night, with my friend’s daughter on my mind, I decided I should

probably do a self-exam. I found a lump in my left breast. I made an appointment with my doctor, and the endless doctor appointments for the next 10 months began.

To date, I have had chemo, surgery and will begin radiation soon. It has been a trying time for me, and my family. However, I must say, that because of my illness, some amazing things have occurred. I have become closer to people who I had lost touch with. I have made new friends as we bonded over this stupid disease and the bonds with my old friends grew stronger. I have been truly humbled by the offers of help, the dinners, the care packages, the rides to appointments and people just willing to listen.

My husband and two boys have been life savers these last months. They have stepped up by being nurses, supporters or simply keeping me laughing when needed. (You would be amazed at the sheer number of bald jokes that were said this past year.) I am not going to say that I am glad that this happened. However, I am grateful for the many positive things that have happened because of my cancer. I have realized that, without a doubt, I am one of the luckiest people around. ~ Heather Renshaw Diedtrich, September 2018

The Bug Guy Arizona Desert Tarantula

In spite, of its reputation, the tarantula is a relatively docile creature. Some find them beautiful and fascinating spiders and even make them pets. Others are frozen with fear at the mere sight of one. You would really have to harass a tarantula to provoke it to bite. Its venom is weak making its bite harmless to people. So there is not much to fear of this hairy arachnid.

The Arizona tarantula which is also known as the “desert tarantula”, “western tarantula” and “Arizona blonde tarantula”, is mostly harmless to humans. Now if you were a scorpion or a cockroach, you may have reason for concern because its venomous bite will overcome most insects and some small rodents. We have seen an increase is sightings of tarantulas this year.

The Arizona species reach a body size of about 3 to 4 inches. She is a bit bigger and stockier than he is. She is a lighter shade of browns and tans while he is thinner with more black hair covering his body with reddish color hair on his abdomen. Besides having enough venom to subdue its prey, they also have some

“urticating” hairs on their backs. They are tipped with pointed pointing barbs. When contact is made by a predator, these hairs penetrate the attacker. Because the tips a barbed, hard to remove and are at minimum an irritant, some predators will instinctively try to avoid the tarantula.

Diet, Prey, Predators and Habitat The Arizona tarantula is a nocturnal hunter.

They feed upon grasshoppers, scorpions, smaller spiders, little lizards and arthropods. Their enemies and predators include larger lizards, snakes, birds and large animals like foxes and coyotes.

Although the venom of the tarantula is relatively weak, it is strong enough to kill it typical prey. Like most spiders, the tarantula has no teeth. Their venom not only kills its prey, it serves the purpose of digesting by liquefying its prey. Since it cannot chew, it sucks-up its liquefied meal.

The tarantula primarily lives in the desert areas but can exist in almost all areas of Arizona. They build deep burrows in conducive soil and line the opening with silk webbing to help prevent “cave-ins”.

The webbing often catches its prey, permitting it to skip a night of hunting. If the proper soil is not available, they will burrow into rocks, logs and sometimes cactus. They do not venture too far away from their burrows, but the male will become more adventurous during the mating season which is generally June, July and September. During the winter months, they go into an inactive state of semi-hibernation. They will plugup their burrows with dirt and small rocks to help prevent invasion by its predators. They survive during the winter on stored fat reserves.

#VeryVerrado October is the start of so many things in Verrado!

The temperatures finally start to drop and become amazing right after Halloween, which is why we all live here. Nothing like an Arizona winter to make the soul happy!

October also means, Fall Break for school kids and teachers, October 7-11th, spiced pumpkin latte at Starbuck’s, Patio dining at our local restaurants and many outdoor activities for everyone to enjoy. Music in the park on the weekends is definitely one of my favorites.

Movies in the park is a close second!

The first big event for the neighborhood is the Verrado High School Homecoming Parade and Block Party, which takes place on Saturday, October 12th. Next up, Haunting at Heritage on October 18th and finally, Love Our Schools Day, October 19th.

Last, but not least, the Sizzlin Steak Showdown is just around the corner. The Rotary Club of Verrado and the Verrado Rotary, in collaboration with other local Rotary Clubs, hosts an amazing night in Verrado at Redmond Field. If you haven’t been before, I recommend you don’t miss this one. All you can eat STEAK, drinks,

snacks and MUSIC, along with raffles and prizes throughout the night. It is also a great opportunity to introduce yourself to our Buckeye Mayor, Jackie Meck and his beautiful wife, Verlyne. They are always at our local events, not just because he is the Mayor of our beautiful city, but he is also a Verrado Resident. Stop by AND kids are welcome! Sizzlin Steak Showdown November 2, 2019 The most anticipated event in October for Verrado would have to be Halloween!

I have never lived anywhere that made Halloween so amazing for adults and kids.

Mainstreet is shut down and flooded with kids trick or treating AND parents too! The houses are decorated like a movie set with haunted houses, smoke machines, music and more.

There is so much that makes it amazing besides the candy for the kids. Even the Heritage District has stepped up their game and resembles a little bit of Mainstreet spirit on a smaller scale. All the activities on Mainstreet in Verrado is definitely something you have to try once. If crowds aren’t for you, try some of the side streets for a slower pace. Everyone is on their porch, candy bowls in hand and happily handing our treats to all the little ones.

Whatever you love to do in October, Fall is in the air and cooler weather is ahead!

Vaping

What is the most commonly used tobacco product among youth? According to recent national studies: E-cigarettes. Studies also show youth are more likely than adults to use e-cigarettes in the U.S. The most popular brand of e-cigarettes among teens is JUUL. They’re so popular, teens refer to vaping as JUULing. The devices are small about the size of a USB drive, and can fit in the palm of your hand, making them easy to conceal.

FACTS: • Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine. But 66% of teens using e-cigarettes think flavoring is the only thing they’re inhaling.

• When it comes to highly addictive substances; nicotine ranks right up there with heroin, opioids, fentanyl, meth, and cocaine.

• Evidence is now beginning to suggest that e-cigarette use is linked to alcohol and other substance use, like marijuana.

• E-cigarettes may be used to inhale marijuana and other drugs in addition to nicotine. Teens are using these devices to vape marijuana oil concentrate or wax (highly concentrated form of marijuana THC) with little to no marijuana scent and no smoke. As the name suggests, they produce a vapor that quickly dissipates.

Yes, I can get high in the next room or just outside the door and you will never know.

The THC content (the active ingredient that causes the high) in the 1960-1970s was about

Today the oil or concentrate can be anywhere from 70-90% pure THC. • There is a rapidly growing vaping crisis highlighted by 450 illnesses and four deaths as a result of the use of e-cigarettes. Most consumers have viewed e-cigarettes and vaping marijuana oils as harmless, but health officials are now warning the public to cease the use of e-cigarettes. Especially vulnerable are youth who are attracted to the “cool” factor of vaping.

According to the American Lung Association, vaping can cause a serious and irreversible lung disease known as popcorn lung. The disease causes coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath, similar to the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

As a community, we can join forces to Get in the Way, To Say Something, To Do Something and have life-saving conversations with our youth about the dangers of vaping and the effects of marijuana on the young developing brain. Money Matters We’ve still got a couple of months until 2019 draws to a close, but it’s not too early to make some end-of-the-year financial moves. In fact, it may be a good idea to take some of these steps sooner rather than later.

Here are a few suggestions: • Boost your 401(k) contributions. Ask your employer if you can increase your 401(k) contributions in 2019, and if you receive a bonus before the year ends, you may be able to use that toward your 401(k), too.

• Review your portfolio. It’s always a good idea to review your investment portfolio at least once a year, and now is as good a time as any. Look carefully at how your portfolio is constructed.

Is it still properly diversified, or has it become overweighted in some areas? Does it still fit your risk tolerance, or do you find yourself worrying excessively about short-term price swings? These are the types of factors that might lead you to make some changes.

• Don’t forget about your RMDs. Once you turn 70½, you generally need to start taking withdrawals – the technical term is “required

minimum distributions,” or RMDs – from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or similar plan. After the first year in which you take these RMDs, you must take them by the end of each year thereafter. If you don’t withdraw at least the minimum amount (calculated based on your age, account balance and other factors) you face a penalty of 50% of what you should have taken out – a potential loss of thousands of dollars. So, take your RMDs before Dec. 31.

• Think about next year’s opportunities. Start thinking now about what you want to do in 2020 from a financial standpoint. Can you afford to ratchet up your investments in your retirement plans? If you have children or grandchildren, have you started saving for college? Have you considered ways to protect your financial independence if you ever need some type of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay? If these or other items are on your financial to-do list, start planning now to get them done next year.

Time goes quickly – so don’t get left behind without having taken the steps to keep moving toward your financial goals.

Buckeye PD SRO’s are Your Friends The fall school semester is in full swing and Buckeye Police Department School Resource Officers are once again in the thick of it. For many, SRO’s are a welcomed sight on campus.

You can often find these fully uniformed, armed law enforcement officers sitting in the cafeteria at lunch with students handing out stickers, pencils or stuffed animals. On high school campuses, SRO’s frequently walk the halls talking with the kids about college or career plans.

One sergeant and five officers make up the BPD SRO Unit. Four officers are assigned to specific Buckeye high schools and one is a rover, going between the city’s elementary and middle schools. Here is the rundown: Ofc. Marina Dominguez, Youngker High; Ofc. Armando Perez, Buckeye Union; Ofc. David Ellison, Verrado High; Officer Jeff Lumadue, Odyssey Jr. and High; Ofc. Hector Vargas is the rover and Sgt. Jason Weeks heads up the unit.

SRO’s are a combination of teacher, counselor and law enforcement officer whose goals are to create a safe learning environment for all students and staff. When SRO’s are not walking the campus, or dealing with a specific issue, they often can be found in the classroom talking with students about everything from drugs and bullying, to sexting and social media.

Two of the key components of “SRP” are “Lockout” and “Lockdown.” These two terms can be confusing to parents. Here is the difference:

During a “Lockout,” all students are brought inside school buildings and all perimeter doors are locked to prevent anyone from coming in.

Awareness is increased. Attendance is taken and teachers conduct business as usual in classrooms.

“Lockdown” is a classroom-based protocol that requires locking the classroom door, moving students out of sight, complete silence and not opening the door to anyone. Teachers take attendance and remain calm.

The SRO’s work closely with their schools creating strong bonds with administrators and staff. They also train staff in the area of incident prevention, teaching them about warning signs and what to look for, as well as mandatory reporting guidelines. SRO’s and school counselors work very closely together to identify potentially hostile or violent individuals early, so intervention and precautions can take place.
