From Me To You... I have found that as we get older it is hard to lose weight and sadly even easier to gain it. We also tend to gain it in more unhealthy areas - did you know that if you hold onto weight in their stomach you are more likely to have heart problems, diabetes and cancer?
So my husband and I decided that we were going to head this situation off at the pass, so to speak. We bought the shakes and used the step trackers but the weight was not really shifting. There was a funny quote on the internet that sums up my problem. It goes something like this: “Diet: Breakfast - 2 egg whites, Lunch - Caesar Salad, dressing on the side, Snack - cheese crisps, Dinner - large pizza, family size bag of Dorritos, gallon of vanilla Ice cream.” That was becoming more and more like my daily routine. I was chock full of good intentions until I sat down at night to watch tv and boom, I ate everything I could grab. Realizing that we needed help we brought in a professional who would keep us accountable. Not only does he train us twice a week, he also helps with food choices and motivation. I am not

a happy exerciser. I don’t like to sweat, or even move too much to be honest, and Ben is great at making it ... fun? Yes I can admit that exercise can be fun. We play games and laugh and sweat. A lot. Now on to the most annoying part of this experience. We do the same exercises, eat healthy food and limit our calories. My husband has lost over 10 pounds in three or so weeks and I can see he is becoming more healthy. Me? I have gained weight. I know that muscle weighs more than fat and I think I am losing inches but it is quite demoralizing to see the fat melt off someone else and not experience that myself. We had all our measurements taken before we started this and I am holding on to the idea of seeing those numbers go down when we get measured again in a few weeks. I do feel stronger and that was one of my goals so I guess I am getting something out of this. I just have to stay away from the pint of vanilla ice cream stashed under the broccoli in the freezer.

On Our Cover
In January 2016, after fifty years of annual mammograms never showing signs of breast cancer, my general practitioner gave me a routine blood test and thought I had leukemia. He referred me to an oncologist who gave me a mammogram and a breast biopsy. The mammogram showed nothing, but the biopsy showed 4th stage metastatic breast cancer which had spread to my bones. My oncologist gave me one year to live. I immediately went into a “rebuttal” mode and took charge of my health with help from family and friends. Although, I had a breast surgeon she never operated, thinking the cancer in the bones was more important. She did, however, refer me to a naturopathic oncologist who I credit for much of my success. I have been on chemo treatments every three weeks since February 2016. Yes, I lost my hair and had many side effects from the drugs, but once two of the drugs were stopped my hair grew back and I have virtually little side effects. It is now two years and nine months from when I was diagnosed.Quarterly bone scans, internal organ scans, brain scans and echocardiograms have not shown any active cancer cells since the Fall of 2016.
Find a natureopathic oncologist. Boost your immune system any way you can. I take supplements every day and eat plenty of organic fruits and vegetables. Eliminate sucrose sugar. Cancer cells feast on sugar. Fructose sugar in fruits is okay. It breaks down in the body differently than sucrose. Read every label on processed food. Sucralose (artificial sugar) is also very bad for cancer patients. I use Stevia or honey if I need to sweeten anything. Honey is very good for you. Essaic Tea or tonic. I put drops of this in my tea or decaf coffee every day. Meditate and send love to your body. Cortisol is a bad hormone that is brought on by stress. Set up a profile on www.caringbridge.org so you can journal your progress and your family and friends can see how you are doing and will send you encouraging comments. Keep up your fighting spirit and positive attitude. Most of all, take charge of your own health. Submitted by Carolyn Gorsuch
In addition to traditional cancer treatments, I would like to share with you some alternative methods that have worked for me. Many physicians are not big on nutrition, but I am convinced nutrition is a big reason why I am still alive and feeling great. I can’t guarantee these things will work for you, but it is certainly worth a try. Change your foods to all organic meats, produce, dairy, etc. High Alkaline water – ph levels of 8-10.8 can be bought in any grocery store. Cancer cells do not like alkaline.I also take electrolyte pills daily. Gatorade and other electrolyte drinks have too much sugar in them. Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

On the 4th of July 2014 I found a lump in my breast that would forever change the course of my life. Somehow I knew from the first moment my hand slid over that spot it was cancer. At first I tried a non-conventional natural approach at a cancer clinic in Florida to cure my cancer but after three months of treatments and thousands of dollars my cancer had only grown and I knew that time was not on my side. I had 4 children and a husband who very much needed me to stick around a while! I decided to go all in with traditional medicine and I was pronounced cancer free by winter of 2016. In May of 2017 once again I slid my hand over a lump under my arm this time and I knew

instantly the cancer was back. After my second breast cancer diagnosis in 2017 I knew Cancer had more lessons for me to learn and I made a very conscious decision to open myself up to the experience of cancer and everything it had to teach me. My first round was a private affair I shared a little but kept the majority of that experience to myself. In a strange way I had felt ashamed like I had done something wrong, that I could have prevented it from happening. This time was different, I knew if I didn’t want this disease to take my life I had to make peace with it and let it roll through me like a wave that I had to ride.

Home Sweet Home Verrado Real Estate Market Forecast
Year to date in 2018 the Verrado market has experienced a 40% increase in home sales volume from this same time a year ago. There were 186 homes sold from January to September in 2017, there have been 261 during that same timeframe in 2018. Our market continues to see prices going up, with the year to date average prices up 4.42% from last year. The average price per square foot in 2017 for homes sold during this time was $128.99/Sq.ft increasing to $134.69/Sq.ft this year. Inventory continues to be low with only 62 resale homes available for sale on the market in Verrado proper, which represents approximately 1.5% of the total homes in the community. With interest rates on the rise and a low housing inventory, this creates a perfect recipe for increasing home values. What does this mean? If you are a seller this could be an opportunity to maximize your home’s value. Days on market for homes in Verrado are down 12% from this time last year. Homes are selling faster and at a higher price. Whether you are a move-up buyer or downsizing, timing is everything in the real estate market, there has
Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine
not been a better time to sell in years than our current market. If you’re considering selling, keep in mind, today’s buyers are smarter and more educated than ever. Per the NAR (National Association of Realtors), buyers are spending a significant amount of time researching homes online before they preview the market on day one. Include a great curb appeal, a fresh coat of neutral paint inside, de-cluttering, staging, and make sure the kitchen, master bed/bath are showcase rooms, these are key rooms for the vast majority of buyers. For buyers, time is of the essence. With increasing interest rates and a dwindling inventory, the real estate market has not been this competitive in years. However, you may have to look past some of those dated features and envision your own personal touches that will bring the home up-to-date for today’s style and trends. In Verrado, there are several new build options either available on the market now or coming soon. Verrado remains the premier master-planned community in the West Valley and will only continue to grow and flourish. This is an exciting time for Verrado and our beloved community. The Doctor Is In People diagnosed with cancer naturally search for explanations for its origin and wonder how cancer might have been prevented. The truth is that most cancers originate naturally within the human body from the moment of birth and continue throughout life.
Studies looking for cancer in certain organs after people die from any type of accident or illness have discovered breast cancer in 40% of women between 40-50 and prostate cancer in 65% of men between 60-65 years of age. Those discoveries raise two important questions. First, where do these cancers come from and second, why are more people not diagnosed or impacted by these cancers? A genetic mutation of a cell’s DNA is required for a healthy cell to take on the features that classify them as cancerous. These mutations primarily arising from inaccurate copying of the genetic code or in other words, a biological “typo”. Every day your body has to replace 5070 billion cells and each cell needs to have its DNA copied. A strand of DNA that contains
16 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine
our genetic code has 3 billion nucleic based pairs (think of these as individual letters in a document) that need to be copied. No organism known to man can copy a 3 billion letter document, 50-70 billion times per day, every day, without making a mistake and these errors can result in a cell with cancerous behaviors. Two thirds of human cancers are thought to arise from mistakes in the copying process. But why don’t more people, or other animals, develop cancer? Fortunately, evolution was also able to provide us with an immune system that prevents these random cancers from spreading. This is why in spite of the fact that 40% of woman may have actual cancer within their breasts, only 11-12% will be diagnosed with it in later years and why only 15% of men get diagnosed with prostate cancer although 65% carry cancerous prostate cells. The haunting question that remains is that as our cancer detection tools become even more sensitive, how many people are being overdiagnosed and treated for cancers that would have never become apparent if the patient had simply been left alone? © 2018. Thought Habits
What quote motivates you the most? We as humans are aspirational by nature and many quotes appeal directly to our nature, helping us see something in ourselves we want to change. Quotes serve as a reminder about who we want to become.
We have what we call thought habits; habitual ways of thinking that allows us to either talk ourselves into opportunities or out of opportunities on a daily basis. Thought habits also impact whether one’s thinking is mostly positive or negative. The words of Henry Ford, “Think you can or think you can’t, either way you will be right,” became an important mantra for life that instilled confidence within me, especially when trying new things. A quote by W. Clement Stone, “To every disadvantage there is a corresponding advantage.
Find it!” became an important belief and driving force in my life. Maybe I saw the “find it” as more of a challenge. No matter the reason why, I am grateful that this quote has become an important part of my life.
When I heard Tony Robbins say, “Success leaves clues,” my realization was that there was no need to reinvent the wheel. Learn from the masters. Take what you learn and use it to go further, faster and easier through life. Here’s an idea for success. It is what I call setting up the game to win. Where is the first place you go to when you get out of bed in the morning and the last place you go to at night before going to bed? Put a book of quotes in that room and read one or two quotes to start and end your day. Do this daily for 30 consecutive days (keyword consecutive). I must caution you: this will turn into a daily habit and an easy way to begin changing or reinforcing your thought habits. Got kids? Imagine if this became one of their daily habits for success…such as a daily breakfast and bedtime routine. As we say in parenting for prevention and success; start early and often. Now is a perfect time to start. Author Larry Tracey, is Executive Director of Youth4Youth.org, Program Director of the Way Out West Coalition. The Bug Guy
Its finally fall here in the west valley, and with a nice drop in temperatures it is time to really keep your eyes open when driving. Let’s all pay attention and be on the lookout for kids playing in our neighborhood streets, riding bikes, scooters, or skateboards, and they can come out of nowhere very quickly. Let’s not be distracted by texting, or anything when driving. It only takes a split second to make a mistake that can last a lifetime. With the amazing storms that we had during our monsoon season, we are already seeing an increase in termite activity. If you see any mud tubes along your foundation wall, please call a licensed professional to evaluate. We are also seeing an increase in spider, cricket, and sewer roach activity. This increase will lead to a surge in scorpion activity, so let’s be on the lookout for scorpions, and remember if it has a skinny tail don’t pick it up!
store this heat for hunting at night. All snakes are exothermic so to stay active at night they must store heat. Here are a few ways to avoid an unfortunate snake interaction. Always turn on an exterior light before opening your slider, always look down before opening your door to confirm that’s there is not a rattle snake staying warm there. Information provided by Larry Cash Estrella Mountain Pest Control
With fall weather the possibility of an interaction with a snake is more likely. As our evenings cool off snakes will look for places to keep warm, such as concrete patios of areas with pavers. They

Money Matters We’re officially in autumn – the season when we bring in what we planted in the spring. But the concept of planting and gathering isn’t confined to agriculture. In fact, it can be used in many walks of life, including investing. So what can you do to help work toward a successful investment “harvest”? Here is (not quite) a bushel of ideas: Plant the right “seeds.” When farmers plant specific crops, they know about what to expect. When you invest, you too need to plant “seeds” by choosing investments that are designed to help meet your goals. For example, to accumulate enough money for a comfortable retirement, you will probably need to own a reasonable percentage of growth-oriented vehicles, such as stocks. Nurture your “crops.” Agricultural workers are diligent about cultivating their crops and if you want to keep your investment portfolio healthy, you also must find ways to nurture it. First of all, you will need to keep adding new dollars regularly, because the larger your overall
investment base, the more you can expand its growth potential. But you might also need to do some “weeding” of your own, because over the years, you may have purchased some investments that are now no longer suitable for your needs. If that’s the case, you might be better off selling these investments and using the proceeds for new ones that could fill gaps in your portfolio. Diversify. Farmers may plant a mix of crops: corn, soybeans, flax, legumes, fruits, and so on. Consequently, if one crop fails, it won’t sink the farmer’s entire business. As an investor, you, too, need to diversify, because if you only own one type of asset class, and a financial downturn hits that asset, your portfolio can take a big hit. But spreading your dollars among stocks, bonds, cash and other investments can help reduce the impact of market volatility on your holdings. (However, diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.) The agricultural harvest season only lasts a few weeks. But doing a good job of growing and managing your investment crop can help you reap the rewards far into the future. Submitted by Wayne Polk, of Edward Jones Investments, Verrado resident
