From Me To You... Not everyone is born a hero. For Peter Parker it was a radioactive spider bite, Captain America was injected with Super Soldier Serum, and the Hulk absorbed too many Gamma rays.

However it starts, we all love an origin story. It can inspire us, or make us long for a bump of our own, something to push us into the next thing - a better version of ourselves perhaps. Sometimes the origin story is a search for a better way to do things, or a solution that no-one else has come up with for a problem you want solved. Facebook started as a way to connect with others on the internet - that one exploded in a big way. Ferrucio Lamborghini was originally a farmer who made tractors. I guess he just really needed some speed in his life. Other origin stories are more personal, we all love to tell of the day we met our spouse, how we fell in love, or the birth of our children. I guess origin stories are really the tales of rebirth, re-invention. A new beginning. Let me tell you a tale of a new beginning that happened 10 years ago...

over your own. The economy was folding in on itself, getting smaller and smaller every day. But in the middle of that despair we began to see new growth. People began to create their own jobs, their own companies, their own security. Estrella Publishing began in that time. An idea, the combination of existing talents, a desire to help these small businesses popping up all over the West Valley, and a history in the printing world that goes back a few generations. “Let’s start thinking about it.” I mumbled, terrified to even try. Al went out that day and sold 3 pages of ads to local businesses and we began to get to work! Since then we have grown exponentially and provided low cost advertising to thousands of local small businesses. We find ourselves in uncertain times, yet again. I encourage you to create your own origin story. You could have the idea for the next Facebook, Lamborghini, or if you are really lucky, Estrella Publishing.

The Bug Guy Homeowners might be planning some exciting home improvement projects, from major renovations to DIY fixes large and small. One of the more important aspects of home maintenance is proper pest prevention to help ensure the home remains a masterpiece more so than a money pit. Termites in particular pose a major threat, causing more than $5 billion in property damage each year – costs that are typically not covered by homeowners’ insurance policies. Depending on the species, termite colonies can consist of millions of members, all of which may be hidden out of sight either tunneling underground or inside a household’s wooden structure. Various types of termites can be found across the country. Regions with warmer and wetter climates typically experience greater termite pressure and are therefore at an increased risk for structural termite damage. Regardless of your location, homes of every size and model throughout the country are at risk for termite damage, and property owners need to take necessary precautions to protect their homes and their wallets. In Arizona we, primarily have Western Subterranean Termites: The group of termites known collectively as subterranean termites includes some of the most destructive termite species. They prefer to nest and forage in moist soil as well as wood that is in contact with soil, hence their name. These termites build distinctive tube-like shelters, often referred to as “mud tubes,” that extend from the soil to a wood source. They eat wood 24 hours a day, seven days a week, using their saw-toothed jaws to bite off small fragments of wood one piece at a time. Over time, this feeding behavior can degrade the structural integrity of a building, potentially 6 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

causing a total collapse. Subterranean termite damage threatens homeowners across the country, as they’re found in every state in the U.S. Termites can eat a home out from under its owners, usually without them even knowing until the damage has been done. In order to prevent an infestation and costly termite damage, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has a number of tips. Termites need water to thrive, so make sure to eliminate or correct any moisture concerns in and around the home by repairing leaking faucets or water pipes, and diverting water away from the house with functioning downspouts and gutters. Routinely inspect the foundation of the home for signs of mud tubes and wood that sounds hollow when tapped. Additionally, maintain an 18-inch gap between soil and any wood portions of the home, and store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house. Consider scheduling an annual termite inspection by a licensed pest control professional specializing in termite control work. Termites cannot be controlled with DIY measures and can result in a large infestation and costly, structural damage if not handled with the help of a pest control professional, also known as an exterminator. I Am Proud Of You

One mantra I have used to get through this time of uncertainty is “success is your duty, obligation, and responsibility.” Lately, I’ve been thinking about that from a parenting aspect. The success of our children is our duty, obligation, and responsibility. As 2020 comes to an end and the holidays approach, one thing has remained constant all year – CHANGE. History has shown we as Americans are resilient. We adapt and solve almost any situation we are presented with. Throughout the year, many of us have dealt with significant impacts on our family, social lives, careers, financial well-being, our own personal and loved ones’ health. I recently had a conversation with my son’s high school counselor, and rest assured that these challenging times are affecting our children as well. Please take a moment and speak with your child on proper ways to deal with the increased stress and anxiety levels they may be experiencing.

One common way that teens deal with adverse situations is through substance use. As parents, it is our responsibility to do everything in our power to GET IN THE WAY of destructive behaviors. As marijuana has become legal in some form across most of the nation, another significant change is the types of cannabis products available. Not only is the THC level higher in the plants themselves, but concentrates are becoming readily available to teens. Cannabis concentrates are made by extracting the THC from the plant and creating a highly potent THC delivery method. High levels of THC in the flower itself range around 15-20%, well above the levels THC from years ago when they were sub 10%. Concentrates, on the other hand, are available from anywhere between 50% and 99%. Concentrates come in many forms, and users can discretely inhale them, without the distinct odor that occurs when smoking a flower-based joint. Concentrates come in many Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

forms, such as oils and solid forms known as dabs, shatter, butter, and wax. Users can put the oil or dabs into a vape pen, and mostly no one knows. One school district reported that 93% of the vape pens confiscated last year contained THC. Our interactions outside of your house are still evolving and are not how we remembered, but we always learn to adapt and make the best life we can. With Thanksgiving approaching in a few weeks, for most of us, this may be the closest experience to what our families knew as “normal” in almost a year. Let’s all take this time to let our children know that we are there for them and appreciate the joy they bring to our lives. Even small gestures of a hug and saying, “I’m proud of you,” will help your child get through the stress they feel as they learn to adapt.

For additional information visit http://www.wowcoalition.org or email: info@ wowcoalition.org

The WOW Coalition is a prevention association that promotes safe and healthy choices and responds to problems caused by alcohol, marijuana and Rx abuse by implementing strategies to prevent and reduce youth substance use.

Yum Yum

What turns a recipe into a weeknight favorite? How about something easy and packed with flavor that can be made partly in advance? Add excitement by exploring cuisines like those of North Africa, with flavor contrasts of spicy, sweet and tart. Harissa-spiced Steak with Grapes and Preserved Lemon delivers big flavor in an easy and quick way. Two North African ingredients, spicy harissa paste, a staple in Moroccan cuisine, and preserved lemon, a flavorful condiment with a mildly tart, but intensely lemony flavor, offer a zesty contrast to the refreshing and lightly dressed grape salad. Harissa-spiced Steak with Grape and Preserved Lemon Salad - Yield: Makes 4 servings Ingredients 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 2 garlic cloves, grated or minced 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon honey, divided

1 tablespoon harissa paste 1 1/2 pounds top sirloin, cut 1 1/2-2 inches thick 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon minced preserved lemon 1 tablespoon chopped thyme 1/8 teaspoon coarse salt and 1/4 teaspoon freshly

ground black pepper 2 cups halved green or red California grapes

Directions • Combine 1 tablespoon oil, garlic, soy, 1 tablespoon of honey, and harissa in a glass pie plate. Add the meat and toss to cover. Marinate 30 minutes at room temperature or cover and refrigerate, then marinate 2 hours to overnight. • Heat grill to high. Pat steak dry and grill 7 to 9 minutes on each side for medium rare. Transfer to cutting board and let stand while making the salad. • Combine the remaining olive oil and honey with lemon juice, preserved lemon, thyme, salt, pepper and grapes. Slice steak into 1/2-inch pieces and divide between serving plates. Top with the grape salad and serve. Come see us at our new store!

Children Can Vote Too!

Voting is one of the greatest privileges given to American citizens. American democracy depends on the participation of all its citizens to elect its officials. As the election rapidly approaches, teach your children the values of democracy so they too will become responsible participants in the electoral process. Discuss the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights and the basic principles of justice, freedom, equality, diversity, privacy, tolerance, patriotism, civic responsibility and respect.

It is important to get your children involved in voting as early as you can. Draw parallels between family decisions and national elections. Allow your children to vote on what to have for meals, TV selections, or the allocation of chores. Allowing children to vote at an early age provides opportunities for critical thinking,

12 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

analysis and debate. This will allow your children to explore areas of democracy, society and basic human rights in a way they understand. On Election Day, take your child with you to vote if the polling place allows. No matter how young they are, it is important to familiarize them with the process. Explain how important voting is and discuss what it means to you. This can be an exciting new process for your children; let them where possible. Celebrate your child’s civic participation and let them proudly wear the “I Voted sticker. Treat election day as a great learning opportunity for you and your family. Discuss, participate, vote and celebrate!

When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.” There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.

• Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current and future sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits. Another strategy used by marketers is using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients and potential future clients with their marketing strategy. Virtual Celebrations For most people, 2020 is a year of change. Remote work, social distancing and more have challenged people to find new ways to connect with each other. Fortunately, humans are resilient and their spirit for finding innovative ways to connect is alive and well. Even as the country reopens, many are still finding the ease of virtual connections to be appealing. In fact, there are many unique ways to connect with friends and family virtually. Here are some simple ways people are elevating every day and prioritizing relationships even from afar:

1) Recognize simple moments and celebrate little things Shift your mindset to focus on the little things that brighten the day. You can elevate every day by taking time to recognize the simple moments and special events that make life so wonderful. There’s no need to wait for a big occasion to celebrate! Send your friend a text with your favorite memory of you two together. Write ecards to family just because. Decorate the house with streamers to celebrate TGIF and then send digital pictures to friends to inspire them to do the same. Be creative and find ways to make yourself and others smile. 2) Think outside the box with video gatherings Your bond with friends and family can grow even stronger when you set up video meetings to celebrate and connect. Fortunately, there are many high-quality video apps to choose from. Maybe you want to set up a Skype date to play a board game together even in different locations? Propose a movie night and set up a Zoom meeting to watch the same movie at the same time. Many people use WhatsApp for international connection, so you can set up a family conference call from different sides of the world. Take the first step and research the plethora of free video chat options.

14 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

3) Host a virtual wine tasting party Cheers to any occasion or just everyday delights with a virtual wine tasting party with friends. This is a fun way to sample different varieties and connect in a meaningful way. For a tasting party, select a variety of options, such as a fresh, crisp Sauvignon Blanc and tropical Chardonnay for whites. For reds, consider a rich Red Blend, and a Cabernet Sauvignon satisfies the craving for a full-bodied wine. Don’t forget a ripe RosÊ, a perfect wine for fall pairings. 4) Explore different video backgrounds Get creative with your setting for virtual gatherings. Yes, there are times when your living room or deck will do, but other times you may want to jazz things up a bit. For example, set up tropical decorations and pretend you are taking a trip to the islands, or explore digital backgrounds that can be added to the technology of your choice. For example, visit https://www.pinterest. com/flattopwines/flat-top-hills-virtual-zoombackgrounds/ to download a virtual Zoom background that features the stunning setting of vineyards in California. 5) Utilize social media platforms Social media has been a way to connect with friends and family for years now, but recently with quarantines and social distancing, even more people are using it to connect to others. Share images and captions of whatever is meaningful to you and tag with related hashtags. Some popular options are #love, #family and #friends. November 2020

Youth Sports Tips This year when it comes to youth sports, seasons have shifted, practices may look different and competitions may be postponed, all of which have been difficult for kids who simply want to enjoy their time on and off the field, court, mat or pool deck. As parents navigate this new normal for their kids in sports, it’s more important than ever to support their kids’ athletic pursuits while also keeping safety in mind. “In addition to performance, right now safety in youth sports is so important,” says author and sports nutrition expert Leslie Bonci, nutrition consultant for the Kansas City Chiefs. “Parents want their children to thrive in athletics - whatever that might look like this year - but also want to keep their health and safety in mind, so it’s important to take some proactive steps.” To help guide parents, Bonci shares her top tips for maintaining a safe and healthy lifestyle for your child no matter their athletic interest: Prioritize safety steps at home and away In sports settings, discourage sharing bottles, clean and sanitize them daily with water and

liquid household chlorine bleach and eliminate any bulk food or beverages during practice and games, using individually packaged items instead. When they get home from practice, get them in the habit of washing hands again before settling in. Stay hydrated to fuel the body and focus the mind Proper hydration is important both on and off the field of play. Rethink their drink and increase electrolyte intake with drinks such as Gatorade. Create balanced plates and customized meals A well-balanced diet is essential for growing athletes to maintain proper growth and optimize performance in athletic endeavors. An ideal diet comprises 45% to 65% carbohydrates, 10% to 30% protein and 25% to 35% fat. For example, brown rice topped with baked chicken breast and a side of roasted carrots would be a wholesome meal. A good dessert could be a vanilla yogurt parfait with berries and granola. Promote smart snack and drink choices Stock your fridge and pantry with wholesome choices for growing bodies so kids make smart choices even when you’re not around. Cheese sticks and nut butters are excellent protein sources. Whole-grain crackers can provide a high-quality carbohydrate. Nuts and trail mixes are easy on-the-go options that satisfy hungry bellies. “Things are certainly different now in youth sports, but that doesn’t mean kids can’t continue to do the things they love in mindful ways,” says Bonci. “A few smart steps to support wellness can help your young athlete be the best no matter the environment.”

Laundry During Covid Good laundry practices in the home are more important than ever. Recommendations from the North American Cleaning and Sanitization Expert Panel offer guidelines to help reduce the spread of infections and illness when it comes to laundry practices in your home. These methods can give you better peace of mind, knowing that you’re doing all you can to help reduce the spread of viruses that cause COVID-19, the flu and colds. Here are some easy-to-follow do’s and don’ts for laundry best practices in your home: DO use a deeper-cleaning, high-quality laundry detergent that removes deeply embedded soils and germs. DO always wash or sanitize hands after handling soiled laundry and transferring wet laundry from washer to dryer, even in healthy households.

as possible to avoid spreading infection in your household.

DON’T wash bedding or clothes from a family member who is ill with laundry from other members of the household. Keeping that laundry separate can help prevent viruses or bacteria from spreading to others. Wash in hot water, using a deepercleaning laundry detergent plus a registered sanitizer and/or sanitizing cycle on the washing machine. Dry in a dryer on high heat. Wearing disposable gloves when handling soiled laundry from an ill household member can provide an extra layer of protection. Following these laundry practices can help ensure your family will be less likely to spread bacteria or viruses, helping to reduce the risk of illness for everyone in your home.

DO use special precautions if COVID-19 is suspected or confirmed. Wear disposable gloves if possible when handling dirty laundry from a person who is sick. Dirty laundry from a person who is sick can be washed with other people’s items. Do not shake dirty laundry. Clean and disinfect clothes hampers, appliance and other surfaces that contact soiled laundry. Remove gloves, and wash or sanitize hands right away. DO frequently wash clothing and other items such as bath towels, hand towels and kitchen towels. Bedsheets and especially pillowcases also require frequent laundering. DO use the highest temperature clothes washer setting you can safely use, according to the care instructions for the items being laundered if a respiratory illness such as COVID-19, the flu or a cold is suspected or confirmed. DON’T wait to wash soiled clothes or bedding of an ill family member - wash those items as soon 22 Estrella Publishing - Main Street magazine

Money Matters It’s almost Thanksgiving. And although 2020 may have been a difficult year for you, you can probably still find things for which you can be thankful – such as your family. How can you show your appreciation for your loved ones? Here are a few suggestions: • Invest in your children’s future. If you have young children – or even grandchildren – one of the greatest gifts you can give them is the gift of education. You may want to consider contributing to a higher education funding vehicle. • Be generous. Do you have older children, just starting out in life? If so, they could well use a financial gift to help pay off student loans, buy a car or even make a down payment on a home. You can give up to $15,000 per year, per recipient, without incurring gift taxes. • Review your insurance coverage. If you weren’t around, it would leave some gaping holes – financial and otherwise – in the lives of your family members. That’s why it’s essential you maintain adequate life insurance. Your employer

Investing is about more than money. At Edward Jones, we stop to ask you the question: “What’s important to you?” Without that insight and a real understanding of your goals, investing holds little meaning.

might offer a group plan, but it may not be sufficient to meet your needs. There’s no magic formula for determining the right amount of coverage, so you’ll have to consider a variety of factors: your age, spouse’s income, number of children and so on. Also, you may want to consider disability insurance – if you were unable to work for a while, it could cause a real problem for your family’s finances. • Preserve your financial independence. When your children are young, you take care of them. But you certainly don’t want them to have to do the same for you – so it’s essential you maintain your financial independence throughout your life. You can do this in at least a couple of ways. First, consider investing regularly in your 401(k), IRA and other retirement accounts. The greater your resources during your retirement years, the less you may ever need to count on your family. And second, you may want to protect yourself from the devastating costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay. A financial professional can suggest a strategy to help you cope with these expenses. • Create an estate plan. To leave a legacy to your family, you don’t have to be wealthy – but you do need a comprehensive estate plan. You’ll have to think through a lot of questions, such as: Have I named beneficiaries for all my assets? How much do I want to leave to each person? Do I need to go beyond a simple will to establish an arrangement such as a living trust? For help in answering all these issues, you’ll want to work with an attorney.

Contact your Edward Jones financial advisor for a one-on-one appointment to discuss what’s really important: your goals.
