From Me To You...

I am no longer allowed to throw balls in the house. Apparently my family is tired of dodging random missiles, picking up broken items and occasionally getting winged themselves. In fact as soon as I reach for a dog toy people duck for cover. I find it a little insulting to be honest.

My aim is not that bad, most of the damage is caused by rebounds and people walking into the line of fire. That is the line I am going with anyway.

It is amazing how many things I aim for in life and get a near miss, but it is not about the ones you miss. As I try to instill in my children, you learn more from failing than success. Sure success is more fun, but failing builds resilience, tenacity and drive. Learning that lesson young is preferable as it can be a hard lesson to learn as an adult.

One of our children is good at math. I mean he just gets it. When I hear a problem that starts with “A train leaves the station at 10am...” my head starts to throb and the world fades to black.

He always knows the answer, always did. Then he went to high school and hit a wall. He stopped loving math and took a couple of years to come back to it. But he did, and pretty spectacularly at that, completing his college math before even starting his finance degree. He fell, figured out that if you fail at something you learn, pick yourself up and do it differently next time - and he learned it when he was young. That is a skill which makes him able to roll with the punches in his adult life.

Many people never learn that lesson, repeating their mistakes over and over again.

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” ~ Albert Einstein We see it all the time, in parenting, business, even politics, (don’t worry I am not going there...) and it rarely pays off for anyone. We all see the pizza joint that goes out of business only to be replaced by yet another pizza joint. There has to be a reason it is not successful in that location!

As for my pitching skills, I am not giving up just yet. Practice makes perfect is another phrase I am hanging on to - perhaps I should just take it outside for a while.

Distributing Iras and 401Ks Wills and Trusts generally will not govern the distribution of your IRA’s or 401k’s. The designated beneficiary form directs who will get the benefits of a qualified retirement plan. If your “Estate” is listed as the designated beneficiary or if there is no designated beneficiary, probate will be needed and the IRA will have to be paid in a lump sum, not over time as an inherited IRA. The benefits of a qualified retirement plan can be distributed through a revocable Trust, over time, as long as certain precautions are taken. First, the Trust must be listed as the beneficiary, the trust agreement. Then, the revocable Trust must be

valid under state law, become irrevocable upon the death of the participant and the beneficiaries have to be identifiable from the trust agreement.

If you are married, then normally your spouse will be the initial beneficiary. In order for a children or a trust to be listed as the primary beneficiary, federal law requires spousal consent in regard to 401K or other ERISA qualified retirement accounts. Federal law does not require spousal consent for IRAs, but Arizona’s community property laws create a presumption that the spouse is entitled to one-half of the IRA. Unused Opioids

Some things in your medicine cabinet are more dangerous than others. When it comes to prescription drugs, opioid pain medicines can be addictive and even deadly. Do you have unused prescription opioids in your home? Keeping unused prescription opioids is risky and can result in overdose and death in children, teens, and even pets.

More than 100 Americans die every day from overdoses involving opioids, and millions are addicted to opioids. The Remove the Risk campaign from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides easy-to-follow steps that any adult can take to immediately remove unused prescription opioids from their homes and help save lives.

What is a prescription opioid?

Prescription opioids are powerful painreducing medicines; they include oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine, and others. Doctors prescribe opioids after surgeries and for injuries; however, these medicines can have serious risks if they are accidentally or intentionally misused.

Why is opioid disposal important for you and your family?

Many people who misuse prescription opioids say that they got them from a friend or relative.

Your friends or casual visitors may seek opioids and find your unused medicines in your cabinets or drawers. Dispose of them safely by visiting www.FDA.gov/ DrugDisposal to find answers to these questions: 1. Is a medicine take-back option readily available?

Medicine take-back options are the preferred way to dispose of most types of unneeded medicines safely, including opioids. Authorized locations may be in retail pharmacies, hospital or clinic pharmacies, and law enforcement facilities. Some authorized collection sites may also offer mail-back programs or “drop-boxes” to help people safely dispose of their unused medicines.

2. If not, is the medicine on the FDA “flush list”? The FDA flush list tells you which medicines you should flush when they are no longer needed. Medicines on this flush list may be especially harmful and, in some cases, fatal with just one dose if they are used by someone other than the person for whom they were prescribed.

3. Can you throw it away in household trash? If no medicine take-back option is available, and the medication is not on the FDA flush list, you can: * Mix medicines with an unappealing substance such as dirt, cat litter, or used coffee grounds; * Place the mixture in a container such as a sealed plastic bag; * Throw away the container in your trash at home; and * Remove all personal information on the prescription label of empty medicine bottles or medicine packaging, then trash or recycle the empty bottle or packaging.

Online Scams Scammers are always cooking up creative new ways to separate people from their money.

The sad reality is that it often works. The latest schemes involve so-called “money flipping,” and it’s showing up in consumers’ newsfeeds on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and even via text messaging.

Keep these things in mind when you see an enticing post or are randomly approached by someone about any form of money flipping or “get rich quick” schemes: 1. Trust your gut If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. You can ignore the testimonials with photos of big piles of cash, the fancy cars and the flashy jewels they displayed with captions of their “success” - scammers may tell you that they work for a money transmitter and have “tricks” on how to double your money. However, monetary systems cannot be “manipulated” by adding a few “extra 0s” to any transaction in an attempt to turn a small investment into big money in minutes. Cons claim they will keep a percentage of the profit as commission, but as soon as a victim sends the upfront investment money, they will unfriend or block you on social media, not answer texts or calls and disappear with your dough without a trace.

2. Don’t be fooled by a text from a “friend” Even if a text or SMS appears to be from someone you know, if someone’s asking you for money for any reason, you should think twice before taking action. them directly by phone or in person to confirm the situation. Chances are that it’s really a hacker who is masquerading as someone you really know to try to convince you to take the bait.

3. Use your head Does it seem realistic that someone could turn your $200 into $2,000 by the end of the day? If it were that easy, surely everyone would be doing it. If it doesn’t make sense to you, that’s because it’s nonsense. While common sense should tell us that this is a scam, you should also consider how it would be legal if it did work. In this instance, there is no logical, legal way that such a scam could be effective and legitimate. Never let your emotions blind you to these facts. Never invest in something you don’t totally understand.

4. Remember that you don’t really know who you’re talking to

get rich quick.

Even if the person posting on social media or messaging you says that they work in the financial industry, or that they’ve successfully made wads of cash and are just sharing their good fortune out of the kindness of their heart, remember that you have no idea who that person really is, even if they insist they want to get you a good deal or help you

5. Never click any links or give out personal information Someone trying to scam you on Instagram or any other social media site will often lure you into a continuing conversation over text or SMS, then try to get you to click a link to a compromised site or may even try to get you to reveal personal info like your bank account or Social Security number.

Anyone asking you for your money or sensitive financial details is not a giver, they’re just a taker.

Flip burgers, flip pancakes - just do not try to flip your hard-earned cash! Never give money to anyone promising to make you quick and easy money. There is no such thing as free money.

Massing Of The Colors

An Open Letter to All Veterans and Their Families

Sunday, September 8, the 54th annual Massing of the Colors and Service of Remembrance will be held at the B.P.O.E. Phoenix Elks Club 335, 14424 N 32nd Street 85302. It is a moving and stirring event and is sponsored by The Military Order of The World Wars, a veteran’s organization consisting of Commissioned Officers who served on active duty in any of the Uniformed Services.

Over 23 organizations participate in this annual event together with the Arizona Army National Guard, clergy and dignitaries. Perhaps this will remind us that patriotism begins with human allegiance as described by Norman Cousins, Political Journalist, – (1915-1990). Sometimes we feel as though we, as a nation, are no longer interested in the sentiment of sacrifice and dedication. Heinrich Heine, Journalist, Essayist – (1797-1856), in describing a veteran wrote, “I doubt that I deserve the laurel wreath, for poetry has always been merely an instrument with me, a sort of divine plaything. If you would honor me, lay a sword rather than a wreath upon my coffin, for I was, above all else, a soldier in the war for the liberation of mankind.”

There was a time, early in our struggles to eradicate the menace to our society and that of the free world, when the count of the dead and the wounded were repeated on a daily basis.

There have been over 5,000 members of our Armed Forces who have died between Iraq and Afghanistan and over 30,000 of them wounded some seriously.

The war is no longer on the front pages. The men and women in the front lines are no longer headlines. And we sit here, in the comfort of our homes, and neglect to appreciate the duty and honor with which they serve.

It is a dramatic reminder that we have become so complacent. How can we memorialize the innocent people murdered daily and not pay honor to the valiant efforts of our fighting men and women? Where is the patriotism of generations past? They were times when gold or blue stars would appear in the windows of families who had relatives fighting on distant shores; a time when thousands would pour onto the streets watching our troops parade and cheering them on; a time when songs of valor and encouragement were heard throughout the land and beyond – “Over there….” We were so proud of our country and our flag.

Reading these words should give us pause to think about the bravery and sacrifices the men and women of our Armed Forces make every day. We read tales of their courage on distant shores trying to fulfill their commitment to their country. There is the ever-present danger of suicide bombers and terrorists attempting to destroy the very fabric of human existence. The numbers of dead keep increasing with each passing day.

Now we are faced with questions regarding the displaying of our flag or the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, or even the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, the anthem of our heritage and the significance of our purpose.

Our young go into battle to protect or lives and we cannot even signify this heroism by being proud of who we are.

We should be asking God to tenderly kiss the souls of each and every man and woman wearing the uniform of this great country because they understand duty, honor and country, as He leads them to their eternal reward. We should be asking God to watch over our brave defenders as they continue to march into harm’s way. Above all, we should pray that God’s open arms would embrace the tortured bodies of our wounded and dying, and bring comfort to their families.

This is remembrance. These are fitting tributes.

This is what America was and should still be.

This is how we acknowledge our debt. These are the reasons we should all participate in the Massing of the Colors. True, there are several opportunities on our calendar, but all of them are important. All deserve our attention and participation.

As a veteran, I urge all to pay homage to the past and tribute to the present. We, who serve and have served, understand the need to celebrate, commemorate, and continually remember.

International Travel Prep Planning a trip abroad? That’s exciting! But you have lots to do and less time than you think to get it done. What do you need to accomplish before leaving?

Here’s a handy checklist to help you get your ducks in a row.

Passport If you have a current passport, check the expiration date. Many countries require that you have at least two to four blank visa pages, and that your passport be valid for 6 months past the last day of your trip.

If you don’t have a passport or it needs renewal, get that done first. The U.S. State Department announced an increase in processing time for passports to 6-8 weeks. Even a higher-cost expedited passport can take three weeks.

Visas Some countries don’t require visas for brief visits, but you should check well before leaving.

Find the country at travel.state.gov/destination to determine necessary paperwork and allow several weeks for the process. You will typically need to visit the website of that country’s embassy for current visa requirements and instructions. FedEx Office does not currently offer visa services, but plans to in the future. If your destination country doesn’t require a visa, they may require proof of sufficient funds for your trip, proof of onward or return flights and a passport with one blank visa page valid for 6 months beyond the date you arrive.

Health Consult your doctor to catch up on vaccinations.

Find out if the country where you’re traveling requires vaccinations for entry, or which are recommended, on the CDC website: wwwnc. cdc.gov/travel/page/travel-vaccines. Vaccines should be administered a month ahead for maximum effectiveness. If you take prescription medications, bring them in their original containers, plus a copy of the prescription(s).

Insurance Some health insurance policies cover you overseas, but many don’t. You can purchase travel insurance to ensure you’re covered for both doctor or hospital visits and for transporting you to a hospital if necessary. Some renters or homeowners insurance policies cover loss or theft abroad, but you can purchase additional coverage if they don’t.

It’s Been A Year We certainly all know how fast time goes by. One moment it’s the New Year and then suddenly its Christmas again…with everything in between!

How does that happen?

Something else that is a certainty is that all Alzheimer’s patients are different. The disease has similar traits, of course, but how they affect each person and in what time frame can be very different.

My mom has been in her care facility for just over a year. Another example of how fast time flies. I can remember the day I brought her there like it was just yesterday. While having her in a place that cares for her 24/7, offers a warm environment, and keeps her well-fed and clean is a Heaven-sent, it comes at a steep price tag.

But let’s evaluate the price tag for a minute.

While I worry about the cost of her care each time I write the monthly check, I have to admit that giving me piece-of-mind and freedom from the daily worry of her condition often outweighs my anguish. I KNOW I would not be able to care for her in the manner in which she is being cared for if she were still living in my home with me. Nor would I be able to create a life for myself if her care was a 24/7 impact of that life.

I remember what the caregivers told me when I brought her to her new home: “OUR job is to take care of your mother and YOUR job is to love & enjoy your mother.” That comment always makes me feel better. And it’s a true one.

But it doesn’t stop me from worrying about the financial hit. Remember….I am retired, an only child without children or a husband. And I lived on one income for many many years without the benefit of a partner’s income. I certainly have funds invested, but no one knows how long

this monthly drain on my financial security will remain. She could be lost in this horrible disease for another year or so.

And THAT is the haunting feeling many of us have in dealing with a loved-one in a care facility. The facilities often do NOT accept insurance and they are definitely NOT covered under Medicare. It is a horrible thing when we have to worry about the financial part of care giving when we are most certainly worrying about our loved one. It can make us feel guilty that the financial burden even enters into our thoughts. But it does. The alternative that some of us ponder is to keep them at home to save money and to be with them. But statistics have proven that is NOT the solution once they deteriorate beyond our ability to physically care for them.

My mom’s condition has worsened and deteriorated considerably since she’s been at her care home. But not because of their lack of care and attention. Research has indicated that once an Alzheimer’s patient gets to a facility and doesn’t have to feel embarrassed or worry about what they CAN’T do and are among people that are like they are, they are able to let go and just be. While that kind of comfort isn’t always wellreceived by us family members, it really isn’t about us. It’s what’s best for our loved-one.

So…what does all this mean? What it means to ME is that I want my mom to be cared-for the best way possible. The best way I can afford. And the best way that takes away some of the care giving burden from me. The financial worry will always be a concern….of course. But not enough to compromise on her care and on what little time we have left.

Have you ever stored credit card information on your phone for added convenience to make payments in a checkout lane? Do you ever store passwords in apps to transfer funds between accounts? And what’s to keep hackers from accessing a wireless network you check your email on while you’re grabbing a quick cup of coffee?

“More than 15.4 million people a year will experience identity theft, with an average loss of more than $1,000,” said Jane Li, Mercury Insurance’s director of product management.

Following are five do’s and don’ts to help protect your connected devices, as well as your electronic identity, from hackers. * Do power down your devices. This disables the internet connection, cutting off access to any personal information stored on your computer, tablet or phone.

* Don’t connect to unsecured wireless networks.

Information accessed on an open network, including email passwords and sensitive bank information, is fair game for hackers. Don’t make their jobs easier. * Do monitor your children’s device usage. It’s a good idea to limit use of computers, tablets and phones to public areas within the home like the living room or kitchen. This makes it easier for parents to keep an eye on who their kids are communicating with. * Don’t discard important paperwork without shredding it. If it has your name and address, it presents an opportunity for thieves to take advantage and open an account using your information. * Do install recommended updates. Chances are, if an update is recommended, hackers have already discovered a way to access your personal property and information, so keep your software up-to-date.
