From Me To You... “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” - Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities Seems somewhat appropriate right now, doesn’t it? I have sat in front of my computer for a few days now, thinking of what to write to you. I have a quote swimming in my brain, “The last 24 hours have been a heck of a year!” And that sums up our lives. Things are developing and moving so rapidly that it is hard to keep up. As I write this our children are at home for the foreseeable future, and most of us are working from home. By the time you read this in a couple of weeks I anticipate the whole country will be on lockdown. The irony of my last article is not lost one me. When I said I welcomed change I did not mean this!

LICENSED, BONDED & INSURED - LOCALLY OWNED FRANCHISE

It is not all doom and gloom though. I see examples of people helping others, sharing resources, putting up their Christmas lights and taping pictures in their windows so that those taking a walk can see them. Posting encouraging words and funny memes

for others to chuckle at.

Then there is the news. Ugh. I try not to pay too much attention to the sad statistics and instead focus on the positive ones. Let me share some with you. As of now there are... 89,918 confirmed survivors of this virus 95% of the confirmed cases are mild 2 drugs already in existence have been successful in treating patients 3 vaccines are in human trials in the US with other countries around the world conducting their own trials 0 new cases have been reported in Hubei province (the epicenter of Covid19) in 2 days The thing to remember is that this will have an end point and that we should try to calm the crazy hamster wheel running in circles in our brains. “You can’t calm the storm... so stop trying. What you can do is calm yourself. The storm will pass.” - Timber Hawkeye As strange as things seem today we will get back to normal, even if it is a new normal. “Home isolation is not my preferred choice ... but it is a necessary one ...This is not a permanent state, this is a moment in time.” Gov. Gavin Newsom People will come out of this stronger, more connected and more grateful for the everyday things - going to a movie, visiting friends, travelling, attending school or college. While we are in this period I encourage you to be kind to each other, be kind to your family, and most importantly be kind to yourself. Until next month,

On Our Cover I met Heidi Yewman when she invited me to her home a few weeks ago. Heidi and her husband Dave moved to Sun City Grand after visiting her parents who rented here. They wanted to invest in property and thought why not here? Their investment became their home when, after their two children flew the nest, Heidi and Dave were able to become snowbirds. Now they split their time between Denver and Arizona.

Heidi has always loved sports, even playing in college, and now loves to play tennis and pickleball here. They both love to travel and look forward to many exciting trips in the future. A native of Colorado, Heidi attended Columbine High School 13 years before the shooting that stunned the community and made us feel less secure in sending our children to school every day. Knowing some of the people who died spurred Heidi into following the stories of gun violence. She wrote a book titled Beyond The Bullet, the stories of how 19 people cope after a loved one is killed due to gun violence. These interviews are about suicides, accidental and

4 Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine

purposeful deaths, all are poignant and can teach us something. In Beyond The Bullet, Heidi directs the award-winning documentary that follows four individuals who have shot someone. They describe how the pull of a trigger changed them emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. Heidi makes the point to me that her documentary is not trying to be anti-gun ownership, more that it can be a conversation starter. Her goal is to get people to think about gun ownership and the consequences of using a gun. If you shoot someone, what happens next? Beyond The Bullet tells us of an 8-year-old boy who accidentally shot his brother, an 18-year-old who returned fire on the streets of Philadelphia and killed someone, a woman who attempted suicide, and a man who killed an intruder in his home. Every one of these individuals had ramifications from their actions, from prison to depression, remorse and regret. Heidi also recently won the Best Director award at the Las Cruces International Film Festival for her film. Both the book and documentary are available on Amazon.

City Council

My name is Alyson “Aly” Cline. I am running for Surprise City Council for District 2. People ask me about why I am running for Council. I love Surprise! I moved here in 2002, after looking at many various active living communities in many states. Representing the interests of the three communities located within District 2 is of the utmost importance to me. That means listening to the concerns of the people who live in the communities and sharing information from the City to those who live here. In the last 11 years I have been able to volunteer for more than 19,000 hours within the City of Surprise: as a representative on the Disability Advisory Commission, as a volunteer coach for the City Parks and Recreation for 9 years and 18 teams, participating as one of the volunteer scorekeepers for the last 10 years for the Cal

Ripkin and the Babe Ruth tournaments, participating in the leadership of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Surprise for 5 years including Event Chair in 2013 and 2014. I have been a Lifetime Member, Volunteer, Board Member of Friends of the Surprise Libraries Inc. for the past 10 years, serving as the volunteer President for the last 7 years. Bringing in and supporting local businesses is important to the ongoing economic health of our City. I have over 33 years of experience working with businesses, helping them to improve their profits or develop marketing or strategic plans. I want to offer my time and abilities to support the Residents of District 2 and the City of Surprise. I value the input of the residents and will make my decisions based on facts and the needs of the City as a whole. I am interested in helping our local Veterans and I would like to focus on bringing the many parts of our City together. Please vote for me, Aly Cline, to represent you when the ballots arrive in July!

When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.” There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown. • The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend. It also allows for advertisers to re-position a brand or introduce a new product. • Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times. • Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines,

which can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession. • When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current – and possibly future – sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits. Another strategy used by marketers is changing the ad message and using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Some advertisers will offer interest-free loans, coupons or special promotions to boost sales and market share. When the economy bounces back, regular pricing can return. For some advertisers that don’t give cost incentives, they can change the ad message to being expensive but worth it. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides. Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/ or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share. come see our large selection of outdoor accessories

Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.” -----------------------------We at Estrella Publishing are open for business and here working overtime to support our clients and potential future clients with their marketing strategy. Spiritual Thoughts

Recently I read a very interesting essay titled “An Interview with God.” The author is unknown, but I believe it could have been written by any of us. “Come in, “God said. “So, you would like to interview me?” “If you have the time,” I said. God smiled and said: “My time is eternity and is enough to do everything. What question do you have in mind to ask me?” “What surprises you most about humankind?” God answered: “That they get bored of being children, are in a rush to grow up, and then long to be children again. That they lose their health to make money and then lose their money to restore their health. That by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live neither for the present nor the future. That they live as if they will never die, and they die as if they had never lived.”

God took my hand and we were silent for a while, and then I asked: “As a parent, what are some of life’s lessons you want your children to learn?”

learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others. All will be judged individually on their own merits, not a group. To learn that the rich person is not the one who has the most, but one who needs the least. To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in persons we love, and that it takes many years to heal them. To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness. To learn that there are persons who love them dearly, but simply do not know how to express or show their feelings. To learn that a true friend is someone who knows everything about him or her and likes him or her anyway. To learn that is it not always enough that they be forgiven by others, but that they have to forgive themselves.” I sat there a while enjoying the moment. I thanked God for the time and what God has done for my family. God replied, “Anytime. I’m here 24 hours a day. All you have to do is ask for me, and I’ll answer.” Perhaps this is the message of Passover and Easter: God is reachable, all we have to do is extend our hand. Submitted by Rabbi Irwin Wiener, D.D.

God replied with a smile: “To learn that they cannot make anyone love them. What they can do is let themselves be loved. To learn that what is most valuable is not what they have in their lives, but whom they have in their lives. To

5 Reasons To Have A Trust A Revocable Living Trust creates the legal framework for your assets to be handled if you become sick or incapacitated or upon your death. Here are 5 of the top reasons to have a trust:

children or siblings.

1. Your assets can be distributed without giving information to all heirs. Probates require notice to all heirs—including omitted

2. Assets located in multiple states can be managed without court involvement in any state. 3. A trust allows controlled distribution to minor children or grandchildren. Without a trust, a court conservatorship will be required for distributions to minor which have a value

over $10,000. Conservatorships involve annual expenses for court approved accountings, use of the funds is limited and all funds are dispersed at 18. 4. A trust can include incentives for children or grandchildren to go to college, stay away from drugs and become gainfully employed. 5. When you have multiple beneficiaries, including charities, there is centralized management of assets by the Successor Trustee of your choice. Coronanxiety I’m sure that most of you know the basics about what you should be doing now to maintain your physical health: Get accurate updates and information from reputable sources such as the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control, frequently use hand sanitizer or wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, seek medical attention if you develop any symptoms, etc. But you also need to take care of your emotional health. One important way to do that is to manage your anxiety and to reduce your stress. Here’s how I’m managing my own coronanxiety and how you can manage yours. 1. Focus on what you do know as opposed to what you don’t know Whenever you notice that your anxiety is leading you to contemplate “what-if” scenarios straight out of World War Z, resist taking the bait. Instead, focus on the facts. For example, while you don’t know if you’ll get the virus, you do know that the majority of people who get

50 Years 1969-2019

COVID-19 have symptoms that are minor and manageable. 2. Focus on what’s in your control as opposed what isn’t When you feel overwhelmed by what’s going on, take a pause from whatever you’re doing, and shift your mind to thinking about what’s within your control. For example, if you’re in the supermarket, you can’t control whether the other shoppers have washed their hands, but you can put on gloves or use your elbow to open doors and clean your hands thoroughly as soon as you get home. 3. Focus on what you can do as opposed to what you can’t Whenever you feel powerless, focus on the actions you can take instead of those you cannot. You know one thing all kids can and should do? Chores. Chores are good in times of stress because they allow you and your kids to take action and by doing so, counter your feelings of helplessness and powerlessness. Do your chores together whenever possible — for example, prepare a meal, wash the dog, start a vegetable or flower gardens — since this can enhance

bonding at a time when feeling close and connected is so important. 4. Help yourself by helping others Whenever you feel paralyzed by difficult feelings, one way to get unstuck is to help other people who are in need. Check on a neighbor who lives alone, text a friend who works in a business that’s been hit hard by the pandemic, or call an elderly family member to say hello. Practicing kindness and helping others are great ways to reinforce your own feelings of agency and control, and they have the bonus of making you feel empowered and connected — important feelings that we could all use more of during these times of stress and potential social isolation. 5. Limit your news consumption The situation is changing and developing by the hour which is keeping many of us glued to the news or to social media. However, when the news is especially stressful, it’s extremely important to find a balance between keeping informed and not becoming overwhelmed. Decide on specific times of day in which you will check the news, and check it only then. In between, try to focus on doing normal life

Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine

activities as much as possible. We need to give our minds and bodies as many opportunities as possible to de-stress and recover, which means taking breaks from all stress-inducing activities such as news consumption or conversations about the news. 6. Keep your perspective Right now it can be hard for any of us — psychologists included! — to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But this emergency situation will resolve eventually. We don’t know if it will be in weeks or in months, but humans are highly adaptable creatures and life will seem normal again soon. World, we’re definitely being challenged right now. But we’re far from helpless. We can take control; we can take steps to actively manage our emotional health when we’re stressed or distressed; and we can communicate with our loved ones and stay connected to them. And once we do, we’ll emerge from this crisis having gained something of a great value, something that only true challenges can bestow — increased resilience, understanding and empathy.
