From Me To You... Every now and then I find myself scrolling through an online newspaper from my youth. It is a well known and respected piece of journalism, but I don’t usually go there to read the news. I gravitate towards a piece called ‘A Letter To...’ in which ordinary people write letters that they would never send to the intended recipient.

There is another side to reading these letters too. The sneaky side of superiority. That feeling you get when you read an advice column or watch Reality TV.

I suppose it is a catharsis for them, and me in a way. It allows me to explore and validate (in some instances) feelings I have had about some situations.

And let’s face it, Reality TV is the train wreck of humanity. I do love to watch it, sampling the lives of people I would never meet in real life. Realizing that no matter how much money or fame these fabulous people accumulate, they have problems too. Their grass may seem greener on the other side of that fence, but they still have to mow it.

Some of the letters are scandalous “A letter to the wife of my boyfriend.” Or “A letter to the couple who died in my house.” Others are more humorous, “A letter to my lazy spouse.” Then there are the ones that tug on your heart. “A letter to my brother who passed away.” And “A letter to our surrogate, who had second thoughts.” Reading these letters, I feel a sense of completion for the authors. they have been able to say their piece and get those feelings out in a healthy way.

“My life may have problems but thank goodness it is not as bad as this!”

Catherine Uretsky Editor, It’s A Grand Life Magazine info@estrellapublishing.com 623.594.9283

We have all been in situations that were left unfinished. The witty comeback you wished you had thought of at the time but now it would be too late, perhaps even petty, to say out loud. These letters allow the writers to speak those thoughts and feel those feelings in a safe way. Of course they are all anonymous and I am sure the recipients don’t ever read them, but sometimes just putting things on paper is enough. I am sure you have been told in the past that when your feelings are at a boiling point you should write an e-mail then delete it. I have written many quick, emotion filled e-mails then thought better of them and hit the delete button. These letters are an extension of that - the ability to blow off steam and get your point across without hurting anyone else’s feelings. Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine

Allergies

Spring. The time of year when, as poet Alfred Lord Tennyson famously said, a young man’s fancy “lightly turns to thoughts of love.” That is, of course, if you’re not sneezing, coughing or dealing with itchy eyes. Is there anything you can do to avoid them? Yes, says allergist Todd Mahr, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. “You might feel like suffering from allergies is going to happen every spring no matter what, but there are ways to help alleviate your symptoms.” These ACAAI tips will help you enjoy the season instead of sitting it out indoors. 1. See an allergist. Before the season kicks in, make an appointment with an allergist to find out exactly what is causing those itchy, watery eyes. Discovering the allergen that you’re reacting to is the first step in treating it. 2. Find out if it’s allergies or asthma. Or both. The symptoms from asthma can be similar to those of allergies. To make matters worse, allergies plus asthma can be a one-two punch for some allergy

6 Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine

sufferers. Almost 75 percent of asthma sufferers also have allergies. 3. Consider allergy shots... They may be the best way to treat tree, grass, mold, dust mite, cat and dog allergies. Allergy shots are immunotherapy. That means your allergist will gradually give you increasingly larger doses of whatever you’re allergic to. There are also tablets that melt under your tongue to treat allergies to ragweed, grass pollen and dust mites. 4. ...or get a prescription. Research has shown that most allergy sufferers find prescription medications more effective than those they can get over the counter. But most people don’t go in search of a prescription. An allergist can discover exactly what you’re allergic to and prescribe the right medication to ease your symptoms. 6. Commit to a thorough spring cleaning. It’s not just to give the house a fresh look after the long winter. A deep clean will reduce allergens like mold, which build up in basements and other areas where you might not go every day. Wash throw rugs regularly, too, in hot water. With a few commonsense tactics, you can get ahead of your allergies and keep them in the rear-view mirror all season long.

Make It Work

Do you know how your health plan works? If not, now is an ideal time to learn how to make it work for you. Rebecca Madsen, chief consumer officer of UnitedHealthcare, offers the following tips that may lead you to better health and even help save you money. 1. Understand your plan. Learn what your health plan covers - including medical, pharmacy and preventive benefits. When in doubt, call the number on your health plan ID card to get the most up-to-date information.

2. Ask about lower-cost prescriptions. Talk to your doctor about the cost of your medication. You may be surprised to learn that generic medications are often more affordable than their brand-name equivalents. In addition, some pharmacy benefit plans now offer discounts at the point of sale in the form of rebates, also known as a partial refund, from pharmacy manufacturers. These discounts could potentially lower your outof-pocket costs on select medications.

Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine

3. Stay in-network. You can help keep costs down by staying in-network for your health care services. Your insurance company has contracted with certain health care providers to pay a certain amount of money for your visits, usually at a discounted rate. Because of those discounts, you pay less when you see a health care provider within the network versus one who’s outside the network. For out-of-network providers, your insurance may cover only a fraction of the cost of care - or none at all depending on your plan. Before you make your next appointment, check with your health plan to make sure the provider or facility is in network. 4. Know your care options before you go If your health issue isn’t an emergency, it’s usually best to go to your primary care doctor for care. If it’s not possible to visit your regular doctor, you may be able to receive fast, professional and lower cost care at an urgent care center, a convenience care clinic or an online doctor visit. Online doctor visits are a great option for treating conditions such as colds, migraines and allergies. For more tips and easy-to-understand information about health care, visit the UnitedHealthcare Newsroom at newsroom.uhc.com.

rosemary, thyme and sage. Cook for 3 more minutes or until the bacon is golden in color, then add the onions, carrots, bell peppers, red pepper flakes, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and a few cracks of pepper. Mix well and turn the saut√© setting to “more” on the instant pot and cook for 8 minutes. Add the garlic and cook another 6 minutes, or until the veggies are soft and have wilted down by a good amount. Add the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute, then add the kale, crushed tomatoes, beef stock, dried beans, Parmesan rind, bay leaf, 1/2 teaspoon salt and a few cracks of pepper. Make sure you don’t add liquid past the max line on the instant pot. Mix well and check for seasoning; you will likely need a bit more salt. Press cancel on the instant pot, put the lid on, and set to pressure cook on high for 40 minutes. Once the cook time is done, let the instant pot sit for 10 minutes, then carefully release the pressure manually. Make sure to remove the bay leaf and Parmesan rind. When the soup is ready, bring a 4-quart pot of water to boil and cook the Buitoni Three Cheese Tortellini according to package instructions. Drain well and add the tortellini to the pot of soup and stir. Make the crostini by seasoning the tomatoes with 1 teaspoon of oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt and a couple cracks of pepper, and roast in a 400 F oven for 15-20 minutes. Once the tomatoes start to burst they are ready. Toast the bread, schmear on some ricotta cheese, spread on the Buitoni Pesto with Basil and top with roasted tomatoes. Serve the soup with the crostini and enjoy! Soup will keep for 3 days in the fridge or can be frozen for 3 months. March 2019

More Than The Flu “I’m not the same person. The person before just kind of took life for granted. And now I cherish every moment I have because I know it can be taken away very quickly.” Lisa Pellerin, a mother and a nurse, shared these words as she recounted an experience so devastating to her health that it changed her entire perspective on life. It wasn’t cancer. It wasn’t a heart attack. It was the flu.

According to the CDC, about 70 percent of adults ages 50 to 64 have at least one chronic illness. Lisa is among this group, living with both asthma and diabetes. All it took was one day for the flu to land her in the hospital. “I just kept getting worse. I was in the hospital for three weeks. Everyone thought I was going to die,” she said. Lisa continues to struggle with shortness of breath and a persistent cough, but she’s grateful to be alive.

flu season. For adults, it’s important to know that there are multiple options depending on your age and whether you have one or more chronic health conditions. A doctor can advise which option may be right for each individual, taking into consideration age and other factors such as chronic health conditions. Flu vaccination helps protect more than just the people who receive them - they help prevent the spread of influenza to their family, friend and communities, and especially those more vulnerable to the flu such as infants and young children and those with weakened immune systems. JoJo O’Neal’s bout with the flu turned into a family issue, infecting not only JoJo, but her sister who has COPD, and her niece. “I started to realize my health decisions can impact others,” she said. Now, she does everything she can to help protect herself and others from the flu, which always includes getting her annual flu vaccination. If you or someone you love is 50 years of age or older, go to GetMyShot.org to learn more and speak with your healthcare provider about flu vaccine options that may be right for you.

Vaccination is the best way to help protect people from the flu and help reduce the risk of flu-related hospitalization and death. That’s why the American Lung Association created the MyShot campaign. The campaign helps educate adults about the potential dangers of flu and the importance of getting a flu shot every year. The CDC recommends that people get a flu vaccine by the end of October. However, getting vaccinated later can still be beneficial and vaccination continues to be offered throughout Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine

Credit Health Taking the first step towards financial wellness can provide a sense of empowerment as you get rid of everyday financial stressors, which is why many see a positive connection between financial control and self-perception. Though increasing your credit score might seem daunting, following these healthy credit behaviors can help you make positive changes to your financial health and even your personal well-being. Understand your credit: A great place to start is with your Annual Credit Report, which provides one free credit report each year from all three nationwide credit reporting agencies. The information in these reports directly impacts credit scores, so it’s important to carefully review for any factors that could cause your score to be lower than it should be. This TransUnion Credit Score Overview is also a helpful educational resource and provides tips towards building a healthier credit standing. Review your report and take action: For instance, high accumulations of debt such as maxed out credits cards and unpaid bills will likely be

reflected in your credit report. Unpaid collections are also commonly reported delinquencies that can cause a big hit, even when as low as $100 or less. Inaccurate information caused by identity theft can also lower your credit score and should be disputed online. Create a plan for better credit: After resolving any outstanding issues identified while reviewing your credit report, create a plan towards improving your financial health, which should include: 1) On-time payments: Paying your bills on time and in full each month is key as it builds a positive history of on-time payments and responsible credit use. 2) Credit utilization: It is recommended that you use no more than 30 percent of the available credit, otherwise, your score could be suffering. 3) Evaluate your credit cards: Before opening or closing any credit cards, do your research on the different types of credit cards and the benefits they have. Strategize which cards you use regularly and keep daily spending concentrated to one or two cards total. However, don’t close an old account just because you aren’t using it. Longstanding credit accounts are vital for building credit as this demonstrates a responsible credit history. Remain vigilant about credit monitoring and protection: Once you’re in control of your credit, the next step is to be diligent about monitoring your credit and cautious about your personal information, which includes fraud protection. If you think your information has been compromised, you can protect your credit by freezing it at all three credit reporting agencies. Understanding and managing personal information is vital to achieving life goals such as owning a home, financing your education or having the convenience of credit cards for everyday purchases. With responsible financial behaviors, discipline and consistency, you’ll be on your way to improving your credit, and in turn, feeling more confident about your overall financial health. Aging Gracefully “What you eat and drink can have a tremendous impact on how you look and feel,” says Dawn Jackson Blatner, Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist. “Eating healthy is important at any age, but as you get older, certain foods can have a powerful impact on your overall well-being.” Dawn’s top picks for food that fight aging include: Fish - “Try substituting fish into meals a few times a week,” says Dawn. “Americans tend to eat less fish than people in other parts of the world and they are missing out on great-tasting protein that’s packed with omega-3s.” Omega-3s support brain and heart health, two important considerations as you age. In fact, Mayo Clinic doctors believe that omega-3s reduce the risk of dying of heart disease. Eggs - “Many people don’t realize the benefits of eating eggs, and when you choose the right type of egg, you get higher levels of omega-3s, B12, and vitamin E, all nutrients needed for healthy aging,” says Dawn.

“The sky is the limit for berry versatility,” she says. “Sprinkle some in yogurt, make a smoothie, add some to a salad or eat as a healthy dessert.” Cruciferous vegetables - “Pack your plate with cruciferous vegetables as you age,” says Dawn. “These are members of the cabbage family and include broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, bok choy and kale.” These tasty greens are great fresh or cooked, providing plenty of fiber to help keep your digestion on track, which is a concern for many as they age. But there’s more: The National Cancer Institute states that cruciferous vegetables may help reduce the risk of some cancers. “These dark-green powerhouses pack a nutritional punch that supports healthy aging, so discover recipes that include cruciferous vegetables and other ‘anti-aging’ foods.”

Our ability to absorb energizing B12 decreases with age, so getting B12 in places like eggs is important. Home Sweet Home Nobody bats an eyelash when it comes to buying homeowner’s insurance, but many homeowners don’t apply that same logic to planning for home repairs - not what might happen, but what will happen. Only a fraction of the 120 million U.S. households today are protected by a home services plan, also known as a home warranty.

That number is growing, as homeowners recognize the value of coverage when appliances go on the fritz, hot water heaters run cold in the middle of winter or a leaky faucet drives up their water bill. Perhaps one reason more homeowners don’t have home service plans is because they think they are covered through their homeowner’s insurance policy. Insurance kicks in when damage occurs from an outside force, like a busted sewer line or roof damage due to a major storm. While insurance covers you when Mother Nature strikes, it doesn’t protect you from the natural wear and tear that your home’s major systems and appliances go through during the aging process. Understanding how home service plans work and how they fit into your financial and risk-planning strategy allows you to be prepared for covered breakdowns, without breaking the bank. Let’s start at the beginning. What is a home service plan?

Home service plans typically cover the repair or replacement of major home appliances, including refrigerators, washers, dryers, ovens or cooktops, and components of major systems like plumbing, HVAC and electrical. When your air conditioning system breaks, or your washer or dryer stops spinning, you want the confidence of having a home services plan in place that will help protect your budget. This is where the true value of a home service plan comes in. With a home service plan, you won’t pay the full cost of repairing or replacing items covered by your plan. Regardless of age, make or model, your contract helps cover the repair or replacement of items covered in your plan. For example, if your refrigerator malfunctions, your service provider will connect you to a quality contractor to diagnose and repair the problem. This can help reduce the hassle of repairing it yourself and help protect your budget. Think about your home’s future (and yours). Service plans can come in handy when selling a home. The appeal speaks for itself: When buyers are making that final decision around one of the biggest investments in their lives, having a home service plan in place gives the new homeowner confidence that the home’s systems and appliances are protected, and they won’t bear the entire financial impact of repairing or replacing it if it breaks down. The choice seems obvious: Don’t fall victim to the financial risks and mental stresses associated with owning a home. Appliances have set lifespans, breakdowns are inevitable and repairs and replacements are costly. Make sure your home is covered, so you and your wallet can rest assured that your home is taken care of.

Home Decor

Now is the perfect time to plan updates to outdoor living areas so you’re ready to enjoy your outdoor space to the fullest. Joe Raboine, director of residential hardscapes at Belgard, offers his expert insight into top outdoor design trends of the year. Home designs are truly blending indoor and outdoor areas thanks to features like folding walls and collapsible screens. Imagine a family room that opens up completely to an outdoor patio for easy entertaining, made possible by retractable walls plus smart lighting and strategic heating and cooling sources for seasonal comfort. These types of integrated spaces make the backyard a one-of-a-kind extension of the home. Contemporary style with clean lines, textures and shapes have taken over more traditional styles, particularly among younger homeowners. Modular, large-format pavers embrace this trend and are expected to continue to increase in popularity, with smoother textures gaining traction.

The contemporary trend also leans toward monochromatic color schemes. These muted hues blend seamlessly with the landscape, plus they allow homeowners to use strategic pops of color with furniture and flowers to create customized spaces that reflect their personalities perfectly. In an effort to make outdoor spaces an authentic extension of the home, livability is a priority. That means outdoor kitchens and fire features continue to be a top trend. Kitchen additions like pizza ovens are reflective of the foodie movement, while fire features using gas fuel rather than wood are reflective of the desire for convenience, plus they are a good fit for many municipal regulations. Water features are growing in popularity, used to add a tranquil element to outdoor spaces while masking unwanted sounds, such as traffic or other noise pollution. These 2019 outdoor living trends will prove to create outdoor projects that fit the needs of every homeowner.

Furry Friends For pediatric patients, being in the hospital can be a frightening, vulnerable and lonely experience, especially for those undergoing serious medical treatments. However, research has shown that dogs can have beneficial, longlasting effects on pediatric patients.

Here are a few things to know about in-residence dogs and their positive impact on pediatric patients: 1) In-residence dogs are highly trained service dogs that work in healthcare settings and perform specialized tasks. They are also trained to create an emotional connection with pediatric patients, helping to provide them with joy, comfort and other medical benefits.

Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine

2) Different from volunteer dogs that visit a hospital for a short time, in-residence dogs have a similar work schedule as their human counterparts, working closely with their handlers. They often have access to non-sterile clinics and inpatient units. 3) In-residence dogs can be an integral part of a child’s treatment team. They perform a range of tasks that help medical teams achieve their clinical goals. In-residence dogs can be trained to do incredible things like keep kids calm during medical interventions, teach them how to take a pill or model how to put on a hospital gown. 4) In-residence dogs can help lower a pediatric patient’s stress and anxiety by serving as a pleasant distraction. Hospital staff report that children who interact with in-residence dogs often require less medication. “Our in-residence dogs never fail to lift the spirits of kids and adults alike.”

Meds By Mail One big change transforming how we receive health care services is home delivery of prescription medications. But is this option right for you? Susan Peppers, VP of pharmacy practice at Express Scripts, answers the six most frequently asked questions about home delivery.

1. Is home delivery an option for the medications I take on a regular basis? Home delivery is best used when you are on medications for a chronic condition because it removes the burden of remembering to get a prescription refilled by the patient and encourages adherence to the prescribed therapy. These drugs, which can also be referred to as maintenance medications, are the ones your doctor prescribes to manage long-term health conditions, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes. 2. Could I save money through home delivery? Yes. When using home delivery for your prescription medications you will receive a 90day supply. This could save up to approximately

66 percent in out-of-pocket expenses when compared to the cost of filling prescriptions at retail. 3. What if I have questions about my medications? Home delivery pharmacies include 24/7 access to specialist pharmacists, available online or on the phone. A pharmacist can answer questions regarding your medication or a reaction you may be having to your medication all in the privacy and convenience of your home. 4. Will I get my next prescription on time? Medications are automatically sent in advance of when your previous prescription will run out and usually delivered within four days. You can also call or go online to check on the status of your order. 5. Why can home delivery be good for my health? In addition to saving time and money, studies have shown that home delivery can improve adherence to medications. Adherence, or taking your medications as prescribed by your doctor, is one of the most important things you can do to manage chronic conditions and improve your health outcomes. 6. How do I make sure my temperaturesensitive medication is properly managed through home delivery? Temperature-protective coolers can ensure medications stay within a safe temperature range - even if the package is sitting outside for several hours after delivery. “A home delivery pharmacy is a great alternative for those wanting to save money on their prescription medications,” said Peppers. “With a dispensing accuracy rate that is greater than 99.9995 percent, and leading-edge systems and technology that carefully monitors each prescription, we are proud to continue forging new paths in healthcare.”
