From Me To You...

I have a very unusual dog. On the surface he looks like many other large mixed breed dogs, fuzzy and floppy with an adorable face. But he is not like other dogs.

To start with we chose this breed because one of our children has allergies. The side benefit of this is a dog that rarely sheds. Except for Hank.

He sheds, boy does he shed. Five minutes after vacuuming the house there are blonde tumbleweeds rolling across the kitchen floor. He also has allergies. Any cats make him sneeze convulsively. Aerosol sprays do that too. His nose runs all the time. I am often found in front of the dog, tissue in hand yelling “Blow Hank!” Doesn’t help. His allergies also give him red ‘hot spots’ on his belly. So we give him allergy pills that seem to help - and cost a small fortune.

He is a sweet boy, however he has issues on top of the allergies. I think he has FOMO - fear of missing out. He has to be the first up the stairs and into rooms, like he is worried he will miss something if he doesn’t see it before us. I quite often fake him out and send him crashing up the stairs while I wander quietly into the kitchen.

“Get out! Get out! Get out!” As long as no-one goes underwater he is fine yelling from the side.

Once a head goes underwater he turns into Hank the Lifesaving Lifeguard. He catapults himself into the water - still barking which is comical because he ends up swallowing so much water he starts to choke. Not deterred by the water rushing into his mouth he bravely paddles over to the person in need of rescue and proceeds to try and grab them with his paws. This results in scratches and yelling and everyone leaving the pool.

All kidding aside, Hank is my loyal companion, lying by my feet as I work and loving us all fiercely, and I wouldn’t trade him for any other dog in the world.

Hank has two speeds; relaxed, calm companion and hyper, neurotic dervish. We have a retired service animal in the family and we often joke that Hank could do with his own Emotional Support dog. My sister met him for the first time and commented that he was ‘Rather Special’ and I will admit that he is at his best when Mickey (the aforementioned service dog) is by his side.

One of his more ‘endearing characteristics’ is his love for his family. Unfortunately this means we can never use the pool until Hank is safely tucked away out of sight and earshot. You see he firmly believes that we can’t swim. He can swim and is very good at it but when we get in the pool Hank’s protective instincts go into overdrive. Travellers with Disabilities Traveling, especially during peak times, can come with lots of hassles. Booking a flight, traversing through a packed airport and getting to the gate on time are just a few things that can cause stress. Then there’s using those tiny on-board bathrooms, and hoping you get your luggage back in one piece.

But things could be getting better soon for Castle and tens of thousands of travelers with disabilities with the signing of the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2018

Travel is difficult for the average person, but now imagine doing all this in a wheelchair.

Write it down. The group recommends attaching written instructions for folding and stowing directly to wheelchairs and scooters. Many airlines have forms online for passengers to complete.

“Problems for travelers with disabilities are extremely common,” says Shaun Castle, a service-disabled U.S. Army veteran and deputy executive director of Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA). “By far, the number one complaint that we receive from our members about any issue, is about the problems with air travel.”

Castle has experienced the difficulties firsthand.

He has had his wheelchair bent, cracked and even lost in separate incidents. “These are more than minor inconveniences,” Castle says. “If my wheelchair is damaged, it may mean I am stranded until I can get it repaired.”

There are some things travelers with disabilities can do to reduce risks:.

Plan ahead. Call the airline a week in advance of the flight to confirm special arrangements and call the TSA Cares helpline 72 hours in advance (855-787-2227) for assistance with security.

“This new bill recognizing the rights of travelers with disabilities is a huge move forward, but there’s more work to do,” says Castle. “PVA will continue to work toward accessibility for all Americans with disabilities.”

Financial Fitness

In 2019, many Americans are planning for a “better me” in the year ahead. Gym memberships and diets are at the top of many lists, but what about financial health? Losing debt can be just as important as losing pounds, and financial fitness just as important as physical fitness.

According to a new survey from Marcus by Goldman Sachs(R), half of those surveyed think it’s easier to get into better physical shape than financial shape and 59 percent consider tracking expenses and budgeting to be more stressful than trying a new workout. While it is important to pump iron and feel great physically, it is equally beneficial to pump up your savings and take steps to secure your financial future. Here are five simple ways to help achieve better financial fitness in 2019:

Next, average your spending in key categories that occur on an ongoing basis, such as food and gas Combine those two figures to determine what your actual expenses and monthly budget are, and any money left over can be considered discretionary.

Part of each month’s discretionary budget should be dedicated in advance to savings.

3. Shred unwanted subscriptions: With a budget in place, it’s all about tracking expenses and ensuring that your spending aligns with what your budget requires. Keeping a tighter rein on your spending makes it easier to trim costs and stick to your budget year-round.

4. Pump up your savings: Look for savings accounts with higher rates that can help your money make more money.

1. Trim down debt: Eliminating debt is a worthy goal shared by many - 78 percent of those surveyed would rather get rid of their debt than lose weight. Consider instead a debt consolidation personal loan that could help save on interest when compared to high-interest variable rate credit cards.

5. Find a workout partner: Working out with a partner at the gym helps to establish shared goals, while encouraging accountability. The same is true for financial fitness. Plan monthly check-ins, arrange mini-competitions for saving more and organize “no spend days” together.

Apples

Some comfort foods are hugely rooted in nostalgia. Others are just so enjoyably crispy, crunchy, chewy, sweet or savory, they bring a smile as soon as we tuck in. * Apple and cheddar pasta bake: For a mainentree version of apple pie with cheddar, create a sauce by sautéing two cups of chopped, peeled, tart cooking apples with 1/2 cup chopped sweet onion and 3 tablespoons butter. Stir in 3 tablespoons flour, 3 teaspoons thyme, salt and pepper, 1/2 cup apple cider, and 2 cups of whole milk, melting in one 23-ounce package of softened cream cheese and 1/2 cup of shredded white cheddar. Add the melted sauce to 12 oz. of your favorite cooked pasta, sprinkle with panko crumbs sautéed in butter and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. * Apple, brie and ham paninis: For a scrumptious balance of sweet and savory flavors, fill olive oilbrushed sourdough bread slices with thin layers of sliced ham, brie, medium-tart apples and whole cranberry sauce. Grill for 2 minutes on each side using a panini press or skillet until brie is melted

and the bread is golden brown. * Slow-cooked apple pork chops: In your crockpot, place three to four boneless center-cut pork chops of one-inch thickness. Dice in three red delicious apples and a small yellow onion.

Mix up then add in 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup water, 3 tablespoons brown sugar and cinnamon, salt and pepper to taste. Cook on low for four to five hours, serving with crispy French bread that can mop up the drippings. * Slow-cooked spicy apples: Peel and slice six Granny Smith apples into your crockpot. Add 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 2 tablespoons butter, 3 tablespoons cornstarch and cinnamon, nutmeg and salt to taste. Cook on high for two hours and serve warm, adding to ice cream if you choose. * Nearly instant apple dumplings: Peel and slice a large, tart apple. Unroll a tube of crescent-roll dough, roll up each piece with an apple slice and place them in a baking dish. Brush them with a caramel made of 1/2 cup melted butter, 2/3 cup sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, then pour a half-can of lemon-lime flavored pop over the top. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes.

Online Learning Today’s college students are just as likely to be full-time and part-time employees or members of the U.S. armed forces. Needing flexibility and variety in course offerings, more students are turning to online learning to design a path that fits their lifestyle.

As a result, online learning is seeing significant growth. A recent study found more than 6 million students take online courses across the U.S., and that number continues to rise.

This is important when measuring flour, which settles and varies in density if scooped. * Chill the dough. After mixing ingredients, chilling cookie dough prevents cookies from over-spreading while baking. * Use parchment paper. Parchment paper on cookie sheets does wonders for preventing overdone cookie bottoms. * Hone your decorating strategy. Use a variety of cookie cutters to achieve perfect shapes. Cool cookies before applying toppings so they won’t melt or run.

* Use high-quality ingredients.

Make sure your flour and raising agents haven’t sat in your cupboard too long, losing their effectiveness.

Here is a classic recipe to delight your family and guests.

Deluxe Sugar Cookies: 1 cup butter or margarine, softened 1 cup sugar 1 egg, beaten 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract 1/2 teaspoon Pure Almond Extract 2 tablespoons milk 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder Frosting: 4 cups powdered sugar 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened 3 to 4 tablespoons milk 1 to 2 teaspoons Orange, Lemon or Peppermint Extract, to taste Assorted Food Coloring Cookies: Combine butter, sugar, egg, extracts and milk in large bowl. Stir in flour and baking powder; mix well. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm. Heat oven to 400 F. On lightly floured surface, roll dough one third at a time to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with floured cookie cutter. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 6 to 9 minutes or until edges are light brown. Immediately remove to cool on wire rack.

Frosting: Combine all ingredients; beat until smooth.

Where’s My Flying Car?

Do you remember being a child, sitting in front of a glowing television? Eyes wide, legs crossed and a little bowl of marshmallow-filled breakfast cereal in front of you? The familiar theme song would play, and there they’d be - that futuristic family in a flying cartoon car. It was an incredible sight, one that filled us with wonder and excitement, and the hope of having our very own airborne automobile by 2020. While we wait for that innovation to come to mass-market fruition, the reality of putting your car on autopilot from A to B is right around the corner.

Here are four more futuristic expectations drivers have set as they look down the road: 1. Expectation: Tires that never go flat.

Americans consider the run-flat tire to be the biggest tire technology achievement in recent history. 44 percent are looking to see selfrepairing tires as an imminent innovation.

2. Expectation: A distraction-less drive.

There has been plenty of advancement in tools to

downplay distracted driving - think Bluetooth, “Do Not Disturb” and similar functions for our mobile devices. It’s too bad there hasn’t been a way to keep our eyes off the other drivers. More than half say that other people’s bad driving is their top distraction on the road.

3. Expectation: Cars that can take care of themselves.

Nearly half of Americans would love to see their cars equipped with self-maintenance capabilities.

In reality, today’s maintenance technology can predict things like how far you can go until your next oil change. Now just imagine ... how easy would it be if your car couldn’t just tell you it’s time to take it in, but get the job done for you?

4. Expectation: Driverless vehicles for everyone.

Autonomous vehicle technology is certainly speeding forward, and there are some who argue it will help create a safer drive down the road.

The survey found that men are nearly twice as likely to opt for self-driving capabilities as women.

There’s no telling how long it will take to get us to a flying future, or even a fully self-driving one but we can expect some fascinating futuristic tech to come.

Health Check Persistent dry cough. Fatigue. Shortness of breath. These symptoms are sometimes associated with a passing virus, especially during the peak of cold and flu season. Coughs can last an average of 18 days; however, if your dry cough is still lingering after two months, another condition, such as pulmonary fibrosis, might be the cause.

“There are more than 50,000 new cases of pulmonary fibrosis diagnosed every year, yet many patients have never heard of it prior to their diagnosis,” said William T. Schmidt, president and CEO of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (PFF). “Some individuals with the disease may be first misdiagnosed with pneumonia, bronchitis or asthma, which is why it is imperative we continue to raise awareness about the disease, common symptoms and risk factors.”

What is pulmonary fibrosis?

While the condition is largely unknown, more than 200,000 Americans are living with pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive, debilitating lung disease.

In simple terms, pulmonary fibrosis is scarring in the lungs that, over time, can destroy the normal lung and make it hard for oxygen to get into the blood. Currently, there is no cure once scarring has begun, but the PFF is mobilizing people and resources to provide access to high-quality care, as well as leading research for a cure so individuals with pulmonary fibrosis will live longer, healthier lives.

What are the symptoms of pulmonary fibrosis?

There are three main symptoms of pulmonary fibrosis - shortness of breath, a dry, hacking cough and fatigue. If you have two or more of these lingering symptoms, they should be taken seriously and you should speak with your physician.

“I started off with a slight, dry cough. I didn’t know what it was,” said Dot Delarosa, a pulmonary fibrosis patient who received a lifesaving lung transplant in 2010. “I would talk and I would cough, talk and cough. To me, this was my normal.”

While anyone can develop pulmonary fibrosis, it is more likely to occur in those 60 years and older with a history of smoking, putting hundreds of thousands of Americans at risk for the disease. Other risk factors include: a family history of pulmonary fibrosis; prior or current use of certain medications such as chemotherapy and amiodarone; a history of radiation treatment to the chest; environmental and occupational exposures including indoor mold, birds or asbestos; and a previous diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis or another autoimmune disease.

How do I find out if I have pulmonary fibrosis?

Although many of these symptoms are seen with more common diseases such as COPD, asthma and heart disease, it is important to consider pulmonary fibrosis. If you have symptoms or risk factors, the first step is to speak with your healthcare provider. Early diagnosis is key to maximizing treatment options. With a lesser known disease like pulmonary fibrosis, advocating for your health is crucial. To help you start that conversation with your doctor, a downloadable Pulmonary Fibrosis Risk List is available at AboutPF.org.

To be diagnosed, you may need further testing after a thorough physical exam with your physician. Testing to help facilitate a clear diagnosis may include pulmonary function testing and/or high-resolution computed tomography.
