From Me To You... It’s January already and you know what that means? Resolutions! Ideas of things you want to improve upon, or achieve, in the next calendar year.
I usually try not to make any resolutions because I feel I am setting myself up for failure. If they were things I could do, wouldn’t I already be doing them? However, I am always up for a good challenge, so this year I am determined to try and run a 5k. Oh boy, now I’ve put it out there for everyone to see. I have many friends who run, they do 5ks, 10ks and I even know a couple who ran a marathon this year. (Well she was disappointed in herself as she only did the half because she had no time to train, but for heavens sakes if I could run 13 miles without training I would be pleased as punch!) In order to see if 5 kilometers was even possible I tried running 3 to start. I would say I managed 2/3s of it at a decent pace and had to walk the rest. In my humble opinion that’s how far a normal person goes without training. In theory I am fit enough to do the race, but my stamina is what gets me. I have been working out consistently over the last year and my strength has improved dramatically (not to brag but I can lift over 100lbs with my legs and a whopping 45lbs with my puny arms) and health-wise I am ready. Now I have to increase the dreaded cardio to get my lungs to stop screaming at the mile mark. I have done a 5k in the past, but I think I was so traumatized by the experience it has me a little gun shy. I signed up for the Gladiator 5k Fun Run for charity - and to be honest because my friend and I had drunk a glass of wine or two and thought it would be a great idea. We planned on training and of course did nothing to prepare. So when the day loomed over me, I knew I was in trouble. When I got to the course and realized Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine
it was a 5k up into the Estrellas before the 17 obstacles my stomach plummeted. I had no choice at that point, it was run or get trampled under the enthusiastic feet of the other runners. I got through the race and thought the easy part was in front of me. Boy was I wrong, here came the obstacles. The first obstacle was a swim under logs in a pool filled with water and ice. Ice! Fine. Then came a tunnel. In the ground. I took one look at the tiny hole in the ground and thought, “There is no way I can fit in there!” But I did. And then I found some relief. It was quiet and dark in there. No-one to see if I was moving. So I rested my head and relaxed. Until I heard the next contestant behind me army crawling towards my refuge. The race ended with a leap over a fire pit. At that point I couldn’t imagine jumping over anything but somehow I managed. I am determined to train and not to repeat my mistakes next time. One might even call that a resolution.

Financial Fitness
The new year is just around the corner and it’s never too early to think about your 2020 goals - and for many, this means prioritizing finances. Taking the time to focus on your goals and determine what’s important to you financially is the best way to set yourself up for success, but actually following through can be difficult. These easy financial exercises from Vanderbilt Mortgage will help you reach your goals in the new decade.
1. Outline your plan If you don’t already have one, establish your plan. Write down short-term financial goals, such as creating a monthly budget, and long-term goals, such as paying off a debt or buying a home. Defining these goals will help as you set your budget for the next year. 2. Create a monthly budget Gather pay statements, bills and bank statements to get started. You can write down all this information or use a budget tool. Start by calculating your monthly income, which includes not only the amount you may get from a regular paycheck, but also any money you get in government aid, child support or pensions. The next step is to look at your bills and bank statements to find out exactly what you spend in various categories of expenses such as utilities, auto, medical, personal, insurance, etc. This accurate information will empower you to take
control of your spending.
3. Set a savings goal Saving is another important aspect of financial health. Whether you’re using a general savings account, adding to an emergency fund, or setting aside funds for a new home, saving for larger financial goals helps you prepare and gives you peace of mind no matter where life takes you. If you’re new to saving, start small. Simply skipping your daily latte from the coffee shop a few times a week can add up quickly. 4. Stick to it The statistics on how many people actually follow through and keep their New Year’s resolutions are rather bleak, but sticking with your financial goals will pay off. Stay on track by monitoring your progress each week. As you get closer to your goals, excitement will build and you’ll be motivated to keep budgeting and saving. Vanderbilt Mortgage offers helpful online resources whether you are looking to purchase a new home or keep your current home in great shape. “Here at Vanderbilt, we want to use our years of experience to help current and future homeowners.” Said Eric Hamilton, President of Vanderbilt Mortgage, “Providing educational materials for every step of homeownership is one of the ways Vanderbilt is with customers every step of the way.”

Car Club Info
I am a Sun City Grand resident and have opened up a new group for all residents called the Topless Club. No, not THAT type of topless, it refers to those of us who have convertibles and love to feel the wind in our hair and the sun on our face when we travel. Your senses of sight, sound, smell and feel are all heightened when you ride with an open top so you feel more connected to the route you are traveling. I bought my first car at age 17 and it was a convertible. Every car I have purchased since then has been a convertible, which is quite unusual considering that I am from Ohio which has plenty of cold, wet weather to go along with the sultry days of summer. I credit my Dad with this passion because when I was born in 1948, he brought me and my Mom home from the hospital in a convertible. That was my first topless ride.
I decided to start this club so that convertible owners could have a scheduled activity to enjoy going topless. Many people agreed and we chose November 14 as our “season opener” ride. Mark Lange was our esteemed photographer who took the beautiful photo from a previous ride. We wanted to keep it simple so we selected a nice scenic location for lunch at a restaurant that was about 50 miles away and would be an easy drive. Preparation is the key to having a successful ride, which includes preriding the route we would be taking to avoid any surprises and visiting the restaurant to discuss seating and menu options. 41 people had signed up for our first ride and everyone showed up with a full tank of gas and freshly washed cars. We left our meeting point at precisely 11:00 am with everyone following safely behind. My husband and I were the lead car, and as we rounded a corner, I looked back to see an awesome line of convertibles strung out behind us. With old time rock & roll music blaring on our radio it felt like 1966 all over again and we didn’t have a care in the world. Considering we are in retirement now, we really do have a different type of freedom that young people 8 Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine
do not yet enjoy. The smiles on everyone’s faces testified to the fun we were having. The restaurant had made personalized menus for us that read “Welcome Topless Club.” We had a delightful lunch looking out over a beautiful golf course with the mountains of Prescott National Forest in the background, and got the chance to relax and meet all the new people in our Topless Club. When lunch was finished, we gave a brief presentation to the group about future club rides, after which everyone was free to take advantage of local activities or just enjoy a nice sunny ride home. Everyone agreed that this Topless Club ride was a huge success and we expect to have many more in the future. Our plan is to have monthly scenic rides (weather permitting) in season to different places. On many of the rides, the number of cars will be limited due to limited capacity at certain restaurants where we will be dining, so it will be “first come, first served” on the signup lists. The only stipulation is that you must have a convertible. Please contact Lorraine at lorrainejo@live.com or call 623-544-6300 for more information or to be added to our distribution list. Having Your Will with IRAs & 401Ks
Wills and Trusts generally will not govern the distribution of your IRA’s or 401k’s. The designated beneficiary form directs who will get the benefits of a qualified retirement plan. If your “Estate” is listed as the designated beneficiary or if there is no designated beneficiary, probate will be needed and the IRA will have to be paid in a lump sum, not over time as an inherited IRA.
The benefits of a qualified retirement plan can be distributed through a revocable Trust, over time, as long as certain precautions are taken. First, the Trust must be listed as the beneficiary, the trust agreement. Then, the revocable Trust must be valid under state law, become irrevocable upon the death of the participant and the beneficiaries have to be identifiable from the trust agreement.
If you are married, then normally your spouse will be the initial beneficiary. In order for a child or a trust to be listed as the primary beneficiary, federal law requires spousal consent in regard to 401K or other ERISA qualified retirement accounts. Federal law does not require spousal consent for IRAs, but Arizona’s community property laws create a presumption that the spouse is entitled to one-half of the IRA. Home Oasis
Here are some healthy behaviors and design tips to help you bring nature’s sanctuary indoors. Fill your home with photos of nature Surrounding yourself with images of nature can have a positive effect on wellness. Try framing some photos of special memories in nature like a hike with your family, beach sunset or mountain view. Let in more fresh air and natural light Today’s homes are built tighter and more sealed, which means they trap toxins from daily living - such as cooking, cleaning, pets and more - inside. Adding skylights that can open is a simple home renovation project to improve fresh air flow, helping rid indoor air of pollutants. Additionally, studies show that exposure to natural light helps to sync your circadian rhythm, allowing for better sleep at night. Fill your home with natural scents Up your chef game by using fresh herbs in your cooking that will fill your kitchen with natural fragrance. Making an indoor herb garden ensures
10 Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine
you’ll always have some on hand. You can also incorporate fresh herbs into bouquets or wreaths. Meditate or do yoga in the morning Waking up with stretching or meditating is a great way to prepare yourself for a successful day. Open the blinds or curtains on your windows and skylights to let in early morning light and help you feel invigorated and refreshed. Go green with your decor Reap the benefits of nature by bringing it inside, adding greenery or even fruit into your decor. The possibilities are endless - use a bowl of fresh fruit as a centerpiece or mix different sizes of pots to create a succulent gallery. Little touches of green in each room will go a long way. Use natural cleaning products Many common cleaning products have harsh chemicals that can be inhaled or absorbed into your skin. Combat the dangers of these toxins by switching to natural cleaning products. You’ll feel safer and more relaxed when your home is chemical-free. From boosting your home’s natural light to going green and adding plant life, it’s easy to turn your home into a natural oasis with these simple steps.

Why The Glass Matters Wine connoisseurs know something even more important than facts about vintages and varietals: It makes a big difference how your wine is served. From the correct temperature to the glass you drink from, how any wine is presented can change the entire experience. And it’s not just about aesthetics - although a beautiful glass may enhance your visual experience, the size and shape of a wine glass can alter any wine’s aroma and taste, for better or worse. The size and shape of the glass affects not just how the wine responds to its environment (exposure to oxygen and temperature, for example), but how we drink it. The way you hold the glass, how you tilt your head (forward or back - consider a martini glass versus a wine glass), where your nose is centered as you sip and where on your tongue and palate the wine first hits can all impact your experience of the wine. What do you need to know so your guests will experience your wine at its very best? Here are some guidelines.
Red wines In general, the best glasses to enhance the bigger and bolder flavors of most red wines should be taller and have a larger bowl than glasses meant for serving lighter or more delicate wines. Larger glasses allow a wine to breathe more and permit the wine’s flavors and aromas to develop more fully.
For this reason, it’s also best to fill each glass only about one third full when serving red wines, to encourage more aeration. White wines The ideal glass for most white wines will be U-shaped, with a smaller bowl than when serving red wines. One of the reasons is that it helps prevent the wine from warming up too quickly, as whites are best served somewhat chilled. The more upright shape of the glass also allows aromas to be released sufficiently - without losing any aroma - for these lighter wines. Sparkling wines When serving champagne, prosecco or other sparkling wines to your guests, flutes or a tulip shaped glass are recommended. These glass shapes allow the chilled wine to stay cooler longer. Whereas a wider glass would offer too much surface area, letting the delightful bubbles fizzle out more quickly. A narrower glass helps to preserve the carbonation of your sparkling wine longer.

The Right Pill While the effort to sustain better overall health is commendable, there is skepticism among healthcare experts regarding the medical benefits of dietary supplements. When caring for your health, it’s important to know the critical differences between prescription medicine, overthe-counter medicine and dietary supplements. Prescription medicine is a pharmaceutical drug that legally requires a medical prescription to be dispensed. In the United States, before prescription medicine can be marketed and sold it must be tested rigorously and deemed safe, effective and manufactured to highquality drug standards by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The prerequisite of medical practitioner oversight reflects the potential benefits and risks of prescription medicine and the importance of taking it appropriately. Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs are drugs that consumers can use without prescription, based on the assumed ability of the consumer to selfdiagnose the condition and then use the OTC drug by themselves without medical monitoring. OTC drug candidates are also assessed by the FDA for safety and effectiveness. Often drug manufacturers submit data to the FDA showing a drug is appropriate for self-administration accompanied by studies showing that the product’s labeling can be read, understood, and followed by the consumer without the guidance of a health care provider. Additionally, concerns about side effects can sometimes be managed by approving OTC drugs at lower doses than their prescription counterparts. A notable example is ibuprofen, which launched as a prescription drug in 1969 and became an OTC drug in 1983. Today it is widely used as an OTC pain killer, but it is available by prescription in doses up to four times higher than the OTC dose. Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine
Dietary supplements are not prescription drugs. Rather, they are classified by the FDA as food. As such, they are not intended to treat disease and their safety, efficacy and manufacturing quality have not been reviewed or approved by the FDA as required for drugs.Dietary supplements are “products taken by mouth that contain a dietary ingredient such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and herbs or botanicals, as well as other substances that can be used to supplement the diet.” Dietary supplements can sound very appealing as they promote hope and possibilities. In part, this is because advertising of dietary supplements is not subject to the restrictions and disclosures of prescription drug advertising. Consumers need to know that when a product label says it “may work,” it hasn’t necessarily proven to the FDA that it is effective. With so many options and perceived “solutions” in front of consumers today, it’s critical that you check with your healthcare professional if you have a condition that requires a “therapy.” Only a healthcare practitioner should be providing medical guidance on what you should take given your specific medical needs and history.
