From Me To You...

People have always known who I am. As the daughter of the local vicar (minister) I was never anonymous. There was not one period of my childhood that was not remarked over and scrutinized and that can be challenging.

At the age of 14 we were all allowed to decide if we wanted to attend church anymore. So of course we all quit on our birthdays. What teenager wouldn’t rather stay in bed on a Sunday morning than get up, get dressed and sit on an uncomfortable pew in a cold church for what seemed like hours? The horror of having to explain that to every single parishioner had us all scurrying back to services within a week.

Our public personas were compounded and somewhat elaborated on because my father routinely made his sermons about us and the religious lessons the parish could learn from our blunders. There was the time when my boyfriend left the house by performing a wheelie on his motorbike, the time we destroyed a clock, the horror of my excruciating trip down an unvarnished wooden slide... I forget the lessons but remember the mortification of everyone

knowing my business. But it is all I have ever known.

Perhaps that is why I left home and travelled across continents and oceans at 18. Perhaps it was just the push I needed. Whatever the reason, after more than 20 years in the background, I find myself reluctantly back in the public eye as an adult.

Notoriety is a strange thing. Being the publishers of our local magazines awards my husband and myself a small amount of notoriety. This means that trips to the supermarket can take over two hours, a quick stop at the gas station becomes a lengthy chat. It can be a problem, but not for the reasons you might think.

There is a condition called Prosopagnosia or face blindness where you do not remember people’s faces. You can remember the person but have no idea who they are. I am not saying that I have this condition but I certainly have problems placing people.

I have been in situations where I have known someone for many, many years, I can tell you where they grew up, their favorite dessert and how we met. But their name? Nope. Completely blank. Sometimes it helps if they are in the same place as last time. If I meet my child’s teacher at school I can usually get it right - but bump into them at the supermarket and I am at a loss. I have attended many a corporate holiday party where about 15 minutes into a conversation I remembered the person I was talking to and realized what an idiot I was making of myself.

So if I meet you in the cereal aisle, or we attend an event together please don’t take it personally if I say something idiotic to you like, “It is so nice to meet you!” Even if we have been to book club together for the last 15 years...

Tremble Clefs

I retired from the Prescott Fire Department after 24 years of service. I was an avid hiker. I worked out regularly and built sets for a local theatre.

For Tim Sheehan, life was good! However, on one of my weekly hikes in 2010, I noticed a bit of a drag in my left leg. No worries. I am right side dominant. I also noticed my left index finger and thumb tapping mildly together. I was mostly curious, no alarm. Because these symptoms persisted, I saw a neurologist who diagnosed me with cervical spine issues caused by age related arthritis that were a normal part of aging.

Fast forward to 2016. My wife and I relocated to Sun City Grand. The finger tapping and foot dragging were slightly more prominent.

Relocation meant new doctors.

My new primary care physician interviewed me and gently told me he believed I had Parkinson’s Disease. The local neurologist confirmed the diagnosis.

The Parkinson’s community in the west valley is quite robust. The Parkinson’s diagnosis did not mean I was going to fight the stiffness, gait irregularities, tremor, dyskinesia, facial masking and isolation alone. There are support groups, classes and exercise groups to help manage the condition.The diagnosis need not be devastating.

North West Tremble Clefs, directed by music therapist Sun Joo Lee, which meets at the Sun City West Christian Church, 20803 N 151 Ave, Sun City West every Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. Tremble Clefs Arizona a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization has had a presence in the west valley since 2008. The Sun City West site is new, only operating since summer.

Tremble Clefs welcomes anyone with Parkinson’s Disease and their caregivers. The group practices exercises to improve posture and strengthen voice as well as singing to help delay one of Parkinson’s onerous outcomes which is loss of normal vocal abilities. In a joyful supportive atmosphere Sun Joo leads the group through movement, stretching, beat keeping and vocalizing. Our voices strengthen.

Our spirits, balance and memory improve.

This therapy is fun! Many in the group live in Sun City Grand.

Avoiding Probate With A Beneficiary Deed

A Beneficiary Deed in essence is a “pay on death designation” for real property. It is very useful if you want to leave your house or other real estate to one or two persons upon our death. A Beneficiary Deed avoids probate without giving up any present ownership interest in the property like joint tenants with right of survivorship does.

The Beneficiary Deed is fully revocable. Where there are co-owners, the surviving owner can revoke the Beneficiary Deed. The owner retains control. The owner does not need to consult the beneficiaries or be concerned about the beneficiaries’ creditors (unlike joint tenants).

The Beneficiary Deed is a great tool for people who have all other assets in accounts that have a “pay on death” designation of some type.

The Beneficiary Deed is not a good tool if you want to leave your real property to more than two people, to minors or to adults with special needs receiving government assistance. In those instances, a trust should be used.

Veterans In Need UP BY THEIR BOOTSTRAPS

It’s a sad fact that many Veterans in our country are under resourced when they come home. The good news? Up BY THEIR BOOTSTRAPS is here to make life a little better for those who have sacrificed so much for our Country. Our Veterans have given some of the best years of their lives in order to protect us and to protect our freedoms.

UP BY THEIR BOOTSTRAPS was founded by Jay and Frances Humphrey in 2013 to fulfill his lifelong dream of working with Veterans in need.

“It’s our vision that by donating a car and other services to a Veteran in need, we can help them to live a more healthy and fulfilling life…A hand up and not a hand out by furnishing reliable transportation to members of the military, Veterans and their families.”

Our goal is to donate at least 1 car every month.

On average it costs $1,000 for each vehicle to be acquired, checked and repaired including things like tires and registration in order to make them “road ready”

To date we have donated 50 vehicles. We have several Veterans waiting for vehicles. We currently have 4 vehicles on hand but just need the funds to be able to make them ready and safe.

It is our hope that as business members of our community as well as individuals see how our mission is helping our Veterans, you will offer to donate a car, financial support or maybe even volunteer as we work to get the word out that our Veterans need and deserve our help. It is Nobler to Serve Than to be Served What is the MOWW? We are a national organization, with regional chapters founded on instilling patriotism and conducting service to others.

In the Phoenix area, the majority of our support efforts are focused on supporting, ROTC and JROTS high school units, in preparing today’s student to be future leaders of America. Our order promotes American Patriotism, Civil Leadership, and supports the Arizona Youth Leadership Conference (AZYLC) presented at the Arizona State University. Our Chapter 131 conducts and supports 17 JROTC regional high school programs via an annual awards program to selected cadets, as well as providing financial support to send several worthy JROTC cadets to the leadership Conference, (AZYLC) each summer.

Each year we provide the Massing of the Colors, (MOC) The Massing of the Colors is a time to rededicate faith in our nation , the Constitution, and to express our gratitude for all who serve and for all who have served. Our chapter also raises funds through the AZ Tax Credit Program to sponsor JROTC cadets to the AZ Youth Leadership Conference (ASYLC) held at the West Campus, Arizona State University.

Our meetings are held once a month on the second Saturday (9:30 AM) at the Fellowship Square16477 W. Bell Rd. Surprise, AZ. We have guest speakers and breakfast. It’s Been A Year My last article ended with me deciding to find out what my APOE genetic make-up was. Those are the markers that will inform me of my risk and likeliness of getting Alzheimer’s disease. It was a big decision to make because once you learn what your risk percentage is, there is no turning back to ‘unlearn’ it. He explained to me that some people are devastated by the results while some are relieved (so they can be better prepared and make necessary plans). With all the information and research I have learned and studied throughout the last 10 years, I knew I would be ok with the results, either way. He asked me what I thought my results were…and I told him. I said that I was almost certain they were either the highest risk or the next highest due to my family history.

It turned out I was half right. They were the next highest…NOT the highest. And when I learned that even with them being the next highest and had a 25% higher risk than someone without my genetic make-up, it also meant I had a 75% chance of NOT getting it! AND….there are numerous cases of people with Alzheimer’s who don’t have a marker at all!! The experts just don’t know conclusively why some people get the disease and some do not.

There are other factors that enter into the equation: lifestyle being a big one. People who smoke, are stressed-out, eat unhealthy, do not

exercise or move on a regular basis, and don’t use their brain have a higher risk, as well.

So now I know. I feel an enormous pressure has been lifted off my shoulders and the truly interesting reaction I had was that under no uncertain terms, my parents GAVE me my DNA and each one gave me an APOE gene. It made my connection to them feel incredibly strong.

Since my gene match was what it was, I semiqualified for the clinical study being started on a potentially new drug that, if proven effective and safe, could be the answer to curing or preventing Alzheimer’s. I wanted to know more about it before I agreed to move forward.

I would go through a three-month qualifying test protocol then, if those results were satisfactory, the actual clinical study would last five years - I had no idea it would be that long! And that’s when learning about the testing protocol started to get a bit squeamish for me: several injections into the lumbar to extract my fluid for testing, more memory and MRI tests, and the tracking of side effects from the drug to determine its safety.

Remembering this is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, I won’t know if I’m one of the people even taking the drug!

I thought long and hard about whether I wanted to do this. I just didn’t think I could endure that much mental attention focused on this study and still be monitoring my mother’s fading condition with the disease…along with upcoming full kneereplacement surgery and rehab for three more! In the end, I declined to participate. And I know it was the right decision for me!

I still have a few reservations about not doing all that I can to help rid the world of this horrible disease. But in the long run, I know I have done more than most and feel good about it. And I need to take care of myself first!
