From Me To You... The world is full of distractions. As I sit down to write this column, for example, I am listening to music (brain building Grieg but admittedly it is a distraction), looking out the window at my neighbors washing their vehicle, smelling my breakfast cooling on the counter, and a myriad of other small things. One distraction that I love is television. In particular cooking shows. There is nothing more enjoyable to me than watching other people cook and thinking that if I had the time or the patience I too could make a perfect Mille Feuille or Beef Wellington. I am also realistic enough to know that I probably shouldn’t try them if I want to keep the waistline I have worked so hard for. I know some people who cook for others and do not eat anything themselves. Not me. I am the ‘taste a little as you cook then dig in when it is ready’ kind of person. One cooking show that I delight in is The Great British Baking Show. Not only is there a cornucopia of delightful food, but the contestants are a joy to watch. They all get their

instructions and off they go. Then something wonderful happens. They start to help each other. Even the hosts get in on the act. “What can I do to help dear?” They often ask, grabbing a large bowl or sifting an ingredient. And when the time draws to a close all the contestants jump into action. “I’m done, love, what can I do?” Or “Let me put those on your plate for you!” One time a contestant noticed an oven that had not been turned on and she helpfully told her fellow baker as she turned it up to the correct temperature. I love it! It is their competitive camaraderie that makes me smile. My husband doesn’t understand it at all, shaking his head in bemusement. “Don’t they realize this is a competition?” he mumbles under his breath as he walks away. After watching Bread Week I decided it was high time to get back into the kitchen and whip up a country loaf. In my youth I baked all the time. I joke about Mille Feuille but I can actually make it, rough puff pastry and all. Now this baking occurred at a different altitude and hemisphere so the ingredients are not at all the same. Did you know that flour contains different amounts of gluten depending on where you are in the world?? Something to be aware of if you are making bread. Needless to say, my recipes no longer work, so I scoured the internet and set to baking. The first day (I had forgotten how long it takes to make bread) yielded one sprained wrist (kneading accident), flour in my eyes and a slightly dense loaf. Not to be defeated I ate it with as much butter as I could slap on it and the next day I adjusted my kneading, proving and baking times and I managed to bake a pretty decent loaf of bread. I think I may try to make Beef Wellington after all. Someday...

5 Reasons To Have A Trust A Revocable Living Trust creates the legal framework for your assets to be handled if you become sick or incapacitated or upon your death. Here are 5 of the top reasons to have a trust: • Your assets can be distributed without giving information to all heirs. Probates require notice to all heirs—including omitted children or siblings. • Assets located in multiple states can be managed without court involvement in any state. • A trust allows controlled distribution to minor
children or grandchildren. Without a trust, a court conservatorship will be required for distributions to minor which have a value over $10,000. Conservatorships involve annual expenses for court approved accountings, use of the funds is limited and all funds are dispersed at 18. • A trust can include incentives for children or grandchildren to go to college, stay away from drugs and become gainfully employed. • When you have multiple beneficiaries, including charities, there is centralized management of assets by the Successor Trustee of your choice. Keep Packages Safe According to the National Retail Federation, 41.4 million people shopped exclusively online from Thanksgiving Day to Cyber Monday in 2018. As the holidays approach, online shopping will continue to grow in popularity. While online shopping offers up a convenient way to purchase holiday gifts, many consumers are concerned about their delivered packages going missing. Here are five tips that will keep your packages safe and your holidays happy. 1. Get deliveries straight to your garage with Key by Amazon This season you can get your Prime packages delivered safely and securely right in your garage with Key by Amazon in-garage delivery. Amazon recently launched the new service to provide Prime members in 50 cities and surrounding areas with the option to select in-garage delivery at checkout 2. Give specific delivery instructions Most delivery services allow customers to set instructions. Ask your mail carrier to knock or ring the doorbell so that you are immediately alerted when a package arrives at your door. Consider requesting that you mail carrier drop off packages in an out-of-sight dry spot. Get creative with these drop-off locations and use other delivery points such as back porches or patios. 3. Sign up for delivery alerts Major mail carriers and delivery services have systems for tracking packages. You can use tracking numbers to determine where an item is, and when it should be delivered. Check with your delivery provider to see if you can sign up for alerts via email or 6 Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine
text message for when your package is shipped, out for delivery and delivered. 4. Team up with a neighbor Work with a trustworthy neighbor to mutually look after each other’s packages. If a neighbor is home during an anticipated delivery, ask permission to have packages sent to their address or have them hold deliveries that come to your front door. Return the favor whenever possible, and bake a holiday treat or give a small thank-you gift to show your appreciation. 5. Request a signature If you are ordering expensive items online, it is a smart idea to require a signature for delivery. By requesting a signature before a package is released, you can ensure that your online purchases are never left unattended. If you are not home at the time of delivery, the mail carrier will typically leave a note with options for rescheduling the delivery for a more convenient time or picking the package up in-person. Holiday shopping is already stressful. Give yourself the gift of peace by trying out some of these package delivery tips, and spend more time enjoying the moments that matter.

A Facebook group is a page created for an organization, community or business to promote activities. Users can then join the group and post their thoughts on a wall and interact through discussion threads. Groups are a great way to connect with friends and neighbors and have discussions that are relevant to your community such a local business, school activities, criminal activities, lost fur babies, request recommendations, etc.... The main purpose of groups is to help Facebook users socialize around any topic in their community. Once inside the Group, Facebook works only slightly different than your profile. A Group does not use the timeline but rather displays posts in direct chronological order, similar to the pre-timeline manner. Also, members of the Group can see who has seen a post, which is a unique feature for Group accounts. Elevate Your Evening Whether you’re hosting a sit-down dinner, a family-style meal or a cocktail party, offer unique food and drink choices to suit the season. A charcuterie board is a great start - all you need to add are some stand-out drinks to make an impression. 1. Create a charcuterie board. Charcuterie boards can be appetizers or the main attraction at a cocktail party. Select cured meats like salami, smoked sausage and prosciutto along with with spreadable choices like pate, plus an array of cheeses. Choose softer, mild cheeses and harder, sharp cheeses to appeal to every palate. Add sliced French bread and/or crackers, with accompaniments like olives or fruit. Round out the board with little dishes of mustard, honey or quince paste. Get creative as you arrange everything on a board or platter. The idea is to provide guests with a variety of seasonal flavors they can mix and match in fun ways 2. Punch up your party. Make a delicious Rum Punch ahead of time and empower your guests to serve themselves: Rum Punch
8 Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine
Ingredients: 3 ounces Angostura 5 Year Rum 1.5 ounces lime juice 3 teaspoons brown cane sugar 1 dash Angostura orange bitters 4 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters Garnish: lime wedge, grated nutmeg, maraschino cherry Instructions: Shake all ingredients and strain into ice-filled glass. Garnish with lime, cherry and nutmeg. 3. Sugar and spice and all things nice. For an easy dessert you can make well in advance, offer guests a platter of chocolate truffles or freshbaked cookies. Another fun option: Cut squares of ready-made puff pastry, add your favorite jam, fresh fruit, chocolate or nut spread, then fold the dough, seal with wet fingers and bake on parchment paper at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes. There’s no reason fall entertaining can’t have the same fun and flair as summer soirees. With great food and drink choices, the possibilities are endless.

Home Decor
Do you have a bathroom that’s starting to look a little dated and drab, but perhaps doesn’t need a complete remodel? If you’re craving a change, you can update the space’s style with a few strategic steps. Not only will you elevate the appearance of your bathroom, but you’ll be boosting your home’s value as well. Here are five ideas for updating your bathroom space with fashion and function in mind: Flooring replacement Replacing the flooring gives the space a noticeable face-lift. New tile is always a great choice for the bathroom, with options in virtually every shade, so you can select a new color palette if you please. Add a heated floor element to give the space upscale appeal. Not into tile? An alternative is luxury vinyl flooring that gives the illusion of wood but with better durability.
Shower style Replacing the shower is a massive project, but if you want to update the style with less effort, replace the shower curtain or door. If you have a shower door, it can be difficult to keep the glass clean and eliminate water deposits that build up over time. A new crystal-clear door from your local home improvement store will add a clean, updated look to the space. If you have a curtain, swap out old material for one in a fresh hue that evokes just the right feel for the space. Linens and rugs Last but not least, to update the style of your bathroom space, don’t forget about fresh linens. New hand towels, bath towels, rugs and more in a coordinating color will update the visual appearance of the room in an instant. Simply swap out new for old and you’ll not only love the look, but there’s something luxurious about wrapping yourself up in a fresh plush towel after a long bath or shower.
Vanity upgrades Your vanity is a main focal point of the bathroom, but replacing the entire unit is costly and difficult. One way to update a vanity is to replace the top portion with a durable material, such as granite, quartz, marble or concrete. This can change the entire look of the vanity and update it with modern style. Want to go one step further? Consider updating the hardware as well. By replacing the handles and knobs you are enhancing the look of the piece while adding to the overall aesthetic of the room. Mirror and lighting One of the hottest trends in bathroom design right now is lighted mirrors, adding both elegance and function to a bathroom. Upgrade your mirror to a new Sunfield Lighted Mirror from Sterling Plumbing and you’ll enjoy natural, purposeful lighting in a sleek design. 10 Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine

Hope & Faith Faith and hope consist of many considerations. For example, there is the undying wish for a life of contentment and fulfillment. To accomplish this we have faith that our future is determined by a power greater than we are. Then there is the belief that doing good and acting kindly will find favor with God. Of course, the main ingredient of faith is hope.
It has been said that life is funny. Perhaps at time it is, but most often, we encounter episodes that test our faith and even cause us to doubt our purpose or the reason for our existence. We sometimes look at life through rose-colored glasses and when reality sets in we are stunned, amazed, and perplexed. Poof – there goes faith out the window. Many tragedies have occurred in our lifetime. Sometimes we dwell on them more than the accomplishments we have achieved, even with all the adversities. We forget the creativity and exploration that we shared with all of humanity. We dreamed and achieved unimaginable heights in reaching for a life with meaning. We read the words of Isaiah and realized that even though his message is one of despair, it also contained hope. We also gained a better understanding of how God works, how we fit into the design, how to realize that hardships can bring redemption. It reminds me of something I once read that deals with the affects of gratitude. It starts by talking about our parents. Hopefully our parents teach us the path to independence however, we often find ourselves rebelling. We can be audacious and obnoxious, but we know that our parents will accept us with open arms ever forgiving. God too sees us succumbing to temptation and floundering with no purpose or destination.
12 Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine
God sets a plan before us and we choose not to follow knowing full well the consequences of our actions. Still we are determined to go it alone, going nowhere and arriving there with nothing. What does God do? Does God throw up His hands and turn His back on us? Yes, at times, it seems that way, but not in the final episode of our rejection. God smiles and accepts the good with the bad because God is love and forgiving. There is one thing missing – gratitude. True, there are times when we do not feel so grateful. I am sure we can think of many of those situations. Still, just as we found our parents to be less than understanding at times we were still grateful for their open arms, their unconditional love. How about extending that to God a little. The reading I refer to goes even further. It talks about dreaming together. It then leads us into a dream of meeting an Angel as we ascend the seven rungs on the ladder to eternity. By the way that is where the expression you are in seventh Heaven comes from. The angel takes our hand and begins showing us around. Eventually we arrive at a room where there are many Angels. Our guide tells us that we are in a reception area. Here is where the many prayers that are said are received. Yes, prayers are received. This place, where prayers are delivered, was so busy with so many petitions from all over the world. Then they are distributed to the various sections to be considered by the Angel in charge of that section. And as the story continues we learn that this section is referred to as the receiving section.
November 2019
All the requests are then sorted for distribution and eventually delivered to God. If we close our eyes for a moment we might find ourselves in an Amazon warehouse!! Finally we arrive at a room at the end of the corridor and much to our surprise only one Angel is there sitting idly doing nothing. This, we are told is the gratitude section. Naturally, we are curious as to why it was not busy. The Angel told us that after people receive the blessings they ask for, very few send back acknowledgments. Naturally, we asked our guide as to how one acknowledges God’s blessings. The answer was quite simple – “just say thank you,” was his reply. How many of us stop to say thank you to God. We complain to God, we blame God, we even deny God. For that matter, how many times do we say thank you to anyone who is kind to us, shows generosity or just befriends us. How do we say thank you to God – think of all the people in the world who have no food, no shelter, not enough resources to make their lives
livable. Think of all the people in the world who are ill with no hope for a recovery, imprisoned, lonely or maimed. Think of all the people in the world who cannot pray to their God without the fear of being murdered because of their practices or beliefs. Then bow your head and give thanks to a God who is here this very moment, this day we should express our gratitude, this time for renewal – for that is the way to start a new day – grateful for the past and ever grateful that there is a tomorrow. It is not an easy road we travel, but if we say thank you enough maybe our attitude and the results of our positive response will make all the difference in how we live our lives and at the same time extend them so that we can say thank you again the next day, and the next day, and, yes, the next day as well. If this is not what Thanksgiving is all about – well, I just don’t know. Submitted by Rabbi Irwin Wiener, D.D.

It’s Been A Year It has been a while since I have posted to my blog regarding my mother’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, primarily because there hasn’t been much more to share. Her condition continues to deteriorate…and I continue to visit her and tell her how much I love her. All I can say is that she apparently is not ready to leave this earth yet. However, there IS something new to share regarding my personal quest to educate and explore the path of Alzheimer’s disease. About a year ago, I attended a seminar put on by the Banner Sun Health Alzheimer’s Institute here in Arizona about GeneMatch. GeneMatch is a program to identify people interested in being matched to Alzheimer’s prevention studies based in part on their genetic information. Approximately 80% of research studies do not complete enrollment on time because they cannot recruit enough eligible volunteers. GeneMatch was established to recruit participants for Alzheimer’s prevention studies, using genetic testing (through free cheek swab kits) to match volunteers with research opportunities. So, since one feels so helpless in finding something they can do to help in the battle against this miserable disease, I signed up! I received a kit about a month later, did the cheek swab as they instructed, sent it back…and waited. Nearly a year went by before I heard back, but when they called and asked if I was still interested in the program, I was very excited and, of course, said yes. They explained that the first meeting would last nearly three hours and would consist of many interview-type questions (about family history, my state-of-mind, my current health), a short memory test (gulp!), and a presentation by an accredited genetic counselor about the genetic test results the cheek swab would tell Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine
me about my APOE gene results and my genetic risk associated with Alzheimer’s disease. It would be up to ME if I wanted to know those results. NOTE: The APOE genes (of which everyone has two….genetically given to us by our mother and our father) determine the risk factor for contracting Alzheimer’s disease. If the results were certain combinations, then I would semi-qualify for the clinical research study (or Part B)….once I went through another round of testing. This Part B clinical study would be a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled group study to evaluate the impact of two new drugs on participants at risk for clinical symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. That was yesterday. It was one of the most interesting and informative presentations I have ever been exposed to. I had decided NOT to decide on whether I would find out the results of my APOE gene match until both the interview and presentation were completed. However, I had given tremendous thought to the pros and cons of learning those results. The biggest negative for me was once I learned them, I couldn’t UN-learn them. So if my decision was to find out, then I would have to live with the information…it would be etched in my brain… good or bad. BUT…if I learned the results and they were bad, then I would be able to alert my friends & family ahead of time and maybe do things I might not otherwise do in life. I knew what my odds were: one parent (my mother) had Alzheimer’s….the disease is more prevalent in women; her sister (my aunt) had it and my uncle (her brother) had it. My father had passed away fairly young so we don’t know if he would have had it or not, and my grandparents on both sides didn’t live that long to show any symptoms. When the time came and they asked me to decide, without hesitation, I wanted to know. Submitted by Kathy Linton

Make A Difference We are all busy and distracted these days, and it can often be difficult to find ways to make a difference to those less fortunate in our communities. However, today it is simpler than ever to give back, and you do not have to alter your hectic routine to make an impact.
Give back while you shop If you want to make a difference with your shopping dollars, look for retailers that give a percentage of their profits to those in need. For example, Walgreens gives one percent of sales from participating vitamin products to nonprofit Vitamin Angels. Through Vitamin Angels, undernourished pregnant women and children under five receive life-changing nutrients to combat the devastating effects of malnutrition. To learn more, visit www.walgreens.com/ vitaminangels. Many retailers and grocery stores also provide shoppers the opportunity to donate to causes when they are at the checkout register. With just a couple of extra clicks, you can opt to add a small contribution to your total bill to provide resources to a worthy cause. Give while you work up a sweat You can get exercise and support a cause you care about at the same time. Several apps on the market allow you to donate to your charity of choice for every mile you walk, run or bike - the miles can even add up as you carry your phone around all day. All you have to do is download an app, create an account, select your favorite charity and get moving! You can also join organized walks and runs that suit all fitness levels to support your cause. Turn it into a social event by rallying friends, coworkers and family members to join you, or ask them to sponsor you (and cheer you on!) for each mile completed. Give back while you de-clutter Next time you join in on the Marie Kondo craze to clear out your closets, consider sparking even 16 Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine
more joy by donating gently used items to a local nonprofit. Clothing and goods you no longer use can be life-changing for those in need. Check before you donate to make sure your charity of choice actually needs your donations. Some organizations will even come to your home at no charge, making it even easier to give back. Give your time With crammed schedules, it can seem like a big commitment to volunteer, but today’s nonprofits offer flexible arrangements. Most nonprofits welcome any level of assistance, even one-¬≠time engagements or a couple of hours a month. Contact a local nonprofit you are interested in to ask about volunteering opportunities. Some employers will even allow you to use PTO for volunteering, so it’s worth asking your employer’s HR department. Making a difference with your dollars or giving your time can feel great, and it can also be effortless. Find a way to make a difference that works for you - and then go for it! Even small actions can make a huge impact to your community.

Not Ready For A Pet? According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters every year. Adding a shelter pet to your family can be fulfilling, but what if you’re not ready or able to adopt?
1. Donate money or product. Many animal shelters and rescue organizations have direct donation links posted on their websites. Monetary donations go toward pet food, medical attention and vaccines for the animals. Animal shelters and rescue organizations also often create Amazon wish lists with desired products. 2. Provide a temporary home. An increased number of animals placed in shelters need foster care before they are ready to find their forever homes. Foster needs range from post-op surgical care to puppy growth care and medical support. Food, medication and other supplies are typically provided when fostering. Contact your local shelter to fill out an application.
3. Volunteer at your local shelter or rescue organization. Animal shelters and rescue organizations offer numerous volunteer roles, such as dog walkers, adoption support and training support. Many positions don’t require prior experience and can be applied for on your local shelter or rescue organization’s website. Volunteer positions vary in expectations and demand, so there is a position for everyone. 4. Take photos of adoptable pets. Help animals find homes sooner by taking adoption photos for local shelters. Many people search for adoptable pets online, and with a great profile picture, animals have a greater chance at being adopted. 5. Become an advocate. Follow animal shelters and rescue organizations on social media and reshare their content. Talk to your family and friends about the importance of caring for shelter pets while they await their forever homes and share how they can help.
