From Me To You...

For years now, my alarm has been a blaring, cacophony of sound. An angry klaxon, shrieking at me, “Wake up! Wake Up! WAKE UP! The noise would jar me out of sleep and hurtle me into whatever horrible thing I had decided I needed to wake up early for. Flights I couldn’t miss, children who had to go to school, deadlines I had to make.

Ahem, you get the idea.

I always manage to book a flight that means I have to get up at 3am. Why? I have no idea.

Perhaps that is the cheaper flight, or in the frenzy of making sure I don’t miss out on a deal I ‘forget’ that a relaxing 8am flight means I need to be there 3 hours before which puts me at 5am. Still do-able. Oh, right, I live almost an hour from the airport. So now I need to be in my car, passport in hand, bags packed to the limit (but not over) so I can avoid checking in. Why not check in online you say? Great idea, but I can never check in online. I must have been flagged somewhere because I always go through the online process in a vague hope that this time it will be different, only to be denied at the final page. “We are sorry but you will have to check in with a ticket agent at the airport.” Great! So there is more time to add.

Heck, I might as well bring a large suitcase if I have to wait (it is included for free on international flights so woo hoo!). Back to the timeline. I am getting in my car at 4am which means I get up at... you guessed it, 3am. With that annoying sound mocking me, “You could have flown in the afternoon!” it seems to say.

However at that time in the morning what I hear is, “If a train leaves Newark at 10am and the cookies need 17 minutes to bake, what color is the cat?” Not good.

I resolved to use something that would gently wake me, ready to start the day with a smile on my face. I found a sweet chiming song that starts quietly, gradually getting louder if you don’t turn it off. Fantastic, I am ready for my 3am wake up call. Funny thing though, I find that I can hate anything that wakes me at 3am, even the sweet, dulcet chimes that seem to mock me anyway. I guess I am just not a morning person. But will I remember that the next time I book a flight?

Well this is not a good way to start your day.

Take it from me, all that does is get me angry and no-one wants to start a trip angry. So I recently had an epiphany. Why not change my alarm to something soothing? My phone has at least a hundred options to choose from, with many more that I can download - just as soon as I figure out how to do that. Peace On Earth

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) Really? Really, God, give thanks in all circumstances? Even when my circumstances are difficult?

Yes. And giving thanks gives us new perspective.

Hospice social worker, Grace Bluerock, learned a lot about thanksgiving from those who were dying. It changed the way she views gratitude.

The following includes ideas from both Grace and me.

Too often we reserve gratitude for just the big things, the things we really want. We’re grateful, at least momentarily, for a special vacation, a big screen TV, a new car, or a new home.

However, there are many more opportunities for gratitude that we might be overlooking. Here are a few to consider in this month of celebrating Thanksgiving: Give thanks for special moments with loved one.

Cherish their presence. We never know what tomorrow will bring. We don’t know when one or the other might pass or move. Capture each opportunity to be together. Meeting for lunch, taking a walk, and sitting and visiting are all moments to cherish.

Be grateful for each new day. Treat it as a new beginning, a new opportunity to share your love, your smile, a kind word.

Look for chances to do something new or unusual. Giving thanks opens you to new possibilities.

Make time to get outside and give thanks for the simple things: a birdsong, the sun backlighting a saguaro cactus, an amazing cloud formation, a child’s delighted laughter, the feel of the sun, walking barefoot in the grass, or gazing at the stars.

Give thanks for pets and their unconditional, faithful love. Stroke them, watch them, be comforted by them.

Be grateful for friendships. Take a moment and send a card of thanksgiving, make that phone call, or send a text of appreciation. What brings us joy is less about stuff and more about fellowship with others.

Give thanks for your faith and the comfort and guidance and joy you experience in it. Give thanks for the love of God offered through God’s grace. Share the wonder of being a child of God with those struggling to find reasons to give thanks.

Gather with others to celebrate worship and express gratitude to God. If you don’t have a church home, check us out at Spirit Song. Yes, we’re still here. We meet at Vistancia school on Sunday mornings at 9:00. Also, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic meets at Vistancia school in the afternoon and numerous other churches are not far distant.

May you discover the joy of a grateful heart in every circumstance!

Respite Care Caring for an aging loved one, especially a parent, can take more commitment than any full-time job. Being on call 24 hours a day is physically and emotionally draining. In many cases, caregivers soldier on without complaint while their stress grows, their relationships weaken and their own health often suffers. If you are your parent’s primary caregiver, you likely already know how hard it is to find time to look after yourself and other family members, run errands or simply rest. Chances are, you just need a break.

That’s where respite care can help. Many caregivers don’t know that respite care is an option, or how this service can change their lives.

Managing Depression Sadness and grief are normal human emotions.

These feelings can often last for a short period of time. However, when these emotions last for many days or weeks, depression becomes a concern. According to the American Psychiatric Association, depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, depression is among the most treatable of mental disorders. Between 80 percent and 90 percent of people with depression eventually respond well to treatment.

It can be difficult to know when feeling down is turning into something more concerning.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, a major depressive episode may include some of these symptoms: * Persistent sad, anxious or “empty” mood * Feelings of hopelessness * Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or helplessness * Restlessness, irritability * Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies * Decreased energy

* Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions * Insomnia, early-morning awakening or oversleeping * Low appetite and weight loss, or, overeating and weight gain * Thoughts of death or suicide * Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment (such as headaches, digestive disorders and pain for which no other cause can be diagnosed) Three steps that can help Step 1: Get screened by a qualified mental health expert.

Wine Pairings Have you ever looked at a wine list and wished it actually told you what the wine tastes like?

Have you ever wanted wine connoisseurs to stop swirling and sniffing, and just take a big sip? Well, you’re not alone and Dan Dunn is on a mission in the name of all things craft to take the stuffiness out of wine, make it more approachable, and let people know it’s not about the glass you drink it out of, it’s what’s in it that matters. Better yet, buck tradition, ditch the fancy stemmed glass and grab a rocks glass.

“Bourbon barrel-aged wines are trending right now, and they are a great gateway for guys who typically drink craft beer and bourbon,” says Dunn.

Forget everything you’ve heard about pairing wines with Brie and apples, he says. In the man’s own words, here are Dunn’s pairings.

1. With a big, juicy burger Think of a great hamburger as you would a classic artist such as Paul Simon. Both are

something special on their own, but when paired with the right partner - be it a robust cabernet sauvignon or a spindly, curly-haired tenor from Queens - well, that’s when the real magic happens. Alas, Simon and Garfunkel called it quits a long time ago, but I’m happy to report that cab and burgers are still making beautiful music together.

2. With pork The pig is indeed, as Homer Simpson once put it, “a wonderful, magical animal.” You should know going in, though, that pairing with pig is a delicate dance. For smoky roasted pork, you can go with a little richer, heavier red - say, cabernet sauvignon - but try the same thing with a honey or maple-glazed ham and you’ve got a mouthful of clash. For sweeter preparations, think midbodied reds like a bourbon barrelaged red blend, aged in charred bourbon barrels for 6 months, delivering a finish as smoky as it is smooth.

4. With lamb No matter how it’s cooked - grilled, braised or roasted - that rich, savory meat demands robust red wine at its side, like a nice zinfandel, with its larger-than-life berry fruit character.

The bottom line is, if you enjoy the wine then drink up!

The French term amuse bouche refers to dishes that are served according to the chef’s selection alone and often accompanied by a complementing wine. Well at Amuse Bouche in Surprise, the menu is very fluid, as the chef continues to change the featured items based on his own favorites, feedback from his regulars, and what ingredients are in season, while retaining select staple items such as the fabulous French Onion Soup (yes, this is the best we have ever had).

Bouche offers weekly featured themed meals from different nations. Vegetarian and Gluten Free menu items are available and there is a Children’s Menu available upon request.

Under new management since Feb-2018, Amuse Bouche’s Chef John is often seen in the dining room interacting with guests pairing wines, sharing stories, and generally enjoying the atmosphere. Chef John likes being himself and making food that people with enjoy in a variety of cuisines using nothing but the best ingredients sourced from around the country.

What makes Amuse Bouche exciting are the Delicious dishes and the artful presentation which is representative of the chef’s passion for cooking. The décor is a very warm and welcoming with indoor and outdoor seating available.

Amuse Bouche offers sophisticated American dishes with a European flair that appeals to all ages. In addition to the many menu items, Amuse

Some of our favorites are the Duck Drumettes in a Sweet Ginger Orange Glaze, Beef Bourguignon, Lobster Mac & Cheese, Chicken Pot Pie, and the Veggie Pastries. Do not leave before asking about the Bread Pudding and Homemade Pies.

Amuse Bouche offers a full service bar with daily Happy Hour specials and high-end wine selections on weekends. “If you don’t like the wine, we will buy it back and drink it ourselves!” jokes Chef John.

Reservations are not required but highly recommended, especially for Sunday brunch, as well as weekend evenings. Be aware the restaurant is closed on Mondays. Catering services are also available.
