From Me To You... Time is a funny thing. For many years time seemed to go so slowly. Every day lasted an eternity and there was little to distinguish one day from another. I measured my life in seasons or school and no school. Admittedly I was raising four children under 10 and wrangling my life in a new state, but still... I guess it is true that when you have small children the days are long and the years are short. I look back at that time in my life and remember just getting through the day.
Now it is very different. I spent months planning a trip this year. Coordinating schedules with the friends we were travelling with, finding and booking the best place to stay, organizing the things that needed to be taken care of here while we were gone. Then suddenly we were in the car, driving to our destination. The vacation itself flew by and we were home! Blink. Now I am submerged in my life again, that takes no time at all by the way, and looking ahead to other events. I celebrated a milestone birthday this month and perhaps that is why I am musing on the subject of time. By all intents and purposes I am now middle aged. Wow, how did that happen? My parents were old when they hit this birthday, heck they were old 10 years before this birthday! And here I am, feeling the healthiest I think I have ever felt, more secure in myself as a person in my personal life, my marriage and my friendships. And yet. I have this label.
There is a theory in Sociology that is called the Self-Labelling Prophesy. Basically it posits that if you name someone in a certain way then that person will live up to the moniker you give them. The Smart Kid will achieve more success academically, The Bad Seed will feel like there is no point in trying and will continue to act out, The Bad Dog will continue to chew your baseboards and jump on the furniture. And The Middle Aged Woman will get ready for retirement and take up knitting. I don’t think I will go down that way. I already know how to knit and honestly it is not for me. I have not even begun to do everything I am capable of and want to do. I just have to get to retirement so I have the time to do some of those things! And there it is again. Rushing towards something to be able to do the thing I think I can’t do yet. I need to slow down and be in the moment. That is a phrase we are hearing a lot recently. It is apt though. We all could do with stopping and appreciating the now. Look around at your life and see what you have achieved already. What is good in your day? Whether it is as big as buying a new house or as small as checking off an item on your to-do list. Savor it. Enjoy the victories and don’t let time drag you along in its wake. Until next time...

Health Care Powers Of Attorney
The medical healthcare power of attorney identifies an agent, a trusted family member or friend, who can give consent to medical treatment if you cannot. If insurance requires transfer to a skilled nursing facility before going home from the hospital, your agent can arrange that for you. Different from other states, the Arizona allows you to authorize your health care agent to follow your instructions for burial or cremation. Otherwise, when there is no surviving spouse, all of the children or other family members may have to be consulted. Another difference from
other states is the mental healthcare power of attorney which helps avoid costly court intervention when there is mental illness, brain injury, dementia or Alzheimer’s. If a person does not have these healthcare powers of attorney, the court must give authority to act. An attorney is needed for the patient and a different attorney for the petitioner. After a court investigation, a hearing is held in open court—in about 45 days after a petition is filed. Time, money and privacy is saved by appointing an agent through healthcare powers of attorney. A Facebook group is a page created for an organization, community or business to promote activities. Users can then join the group and post their thoughts on a wall and interact through discussion threads. Groups are a great way to connect with friends and neighbors and have discussions that are relevant to your community such a local business, school activities, criminal activities, lost fur babies, request recommendations, etc.... The main purpose of groups is to help Facebook users socialize around any topic in their community. Once inside the Group, Facebook works only slightly different than your profile. A Group does not use the timeline but rather displays posts in direct chronological order, similar to the pre-timeline manner. Also, members of the Group can see who has seen a post, which is a unique feature for Group accounts. It’s A Grand Life magazine has established and facilitates a community Facebook Group for Sun City Grand called Sun City Matters. All residents and people with a connection to the community are welcome to join this FB group.

Fire Safety
This simple fire safety checklist can help ensure your home and family are protected from the threats of smoke, fire and carbon monoxide. 1) Install smoke alarms on every level and in every bedroom. Three out of every five home fire deaths result from fires in homes without smoke alarms or with no working smoke alarms. For maximum protection, install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. 2) Testing and maintaining alarms is key. Alarms should be tested regularly and replaced at least every 10 years. Help ensure your alarms remain in good, working order by changing the batteries at least every six months. Many cities and states require sealed 10-year battery alarms, so check with your local fire department if you do not know what to install. 3) Equip your home with fire extinguishers. Beyond alarms, having fire extinguishers - and
8 Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine
knowing how to use them - is an important part of maintaining a safe home for you and your family. Every 24 seconds, a fire department responds to a fire, according to the NFPA, so being prepared to fight small fires is critical. Place extinguishers in convenient locations on every level of the home, in the kitchen and in the garage. 4) Protect against the “silent killer.” An odorless and invisible gas, CO is the number one cause of accidental poisoning and can only be detected with an alarm - yet only 47% of homeowners report owning a CO alarm. Just like smoke alarms, be sure to check all CO alarms regularly using the “test” button for continued protection. 5) Plan. Practice. Repeat. Make sure to involve everyone in your household in creating a plan and practice it at least twice every year. As part of this plan, equip second-floor bedrooms with escape ladders and discuss how to use them. Identify two ways out of each room and a meeting place outside. Emphasize that once at the predesignated meeting area, call 911 and wait until officials clear your home to re-enter it safely. For more information, visit www.firstalert.com

Medicare Enrollment
Medicare Open Enrollment is about to kick off. For most people already enrolled in Medicare, the annual Open Enrollment period (Oct. 15 through Dec. 7) is the only opportunity to make changes to your existing Medicare coverage. Even if you are happy with your Medicare coverage, you should take the time to explore your options. There may be a plan that is better suited to your health and financial needs that could save you hundreds of dollars in the upcoming year. All changes made to coverage during Open Enrollment take effect on Jan. 1, 2020.
Dan Klein, president and CEO of the Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation, an independent charitable organization dedicated to helping people afford out-of-pocket costs for prescribed medications, offers the following tips for navigating Medicare Open Enrollment.
network for next year, you may want to use Open Enrollment to switch to a plan that will include your current doctors, hospitals and pharmacies in-network to lower your medical costs. Note: With Original Medicare you can go to any doctor that accepts Medicare patients. 3. Make sure your medications are covered Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. Many Medicare Advantage plans provide prescription drug coverage as well. It’s important to ensure that your plan covers the medications you need and that the plan’s network of pharmacies makes it convenient for you to access your drugs. Switching prescription drug coverage, or even adding it for the first time, can help make the critical medical treatments you need less expensive.
1. Do your homework Take the time to shop around and understand the benefits and costs of each plan so you can find the coverage that works best for you. Changes to your health status, doctors or other healthcare providers, prescription drugs or budget may mean that your current plan is no longer the most cost-effective choice for you. Insurance companies can also make annual changes to their plans that might affect the drugs covered, provider networks and your out-ofpocket costs.
4. Assess if your plan is still a good fit for your budget Annually, there may be changes to your Medicare plan that affect your out-of-pocket costs. Out-of-pocket costs are your expenses for medical care that aren’t reimbursed by insurance. When selecting a plan, you should consider what you will be responsible for paying under the plan, including the deductible, out-of-pocket limit, co-pays and co-insurance. Also, if you are enrolled in Original Medicare and do not already have supplemental coverage, now may be a good time to consider purchasing a Medigap plan.
2. Make sure your doctors and providers are innetwork Before selecting a Medicare Advantage plan, it’s smart to check that your preferred doctors, hospitals and pharmacies are in the plan’s provider network. If you visit a doctor, hospital or pharmacy that is outside of the network, you will likely have to pay more. If your insurance company has changed your plan’s provider
5. Determine how you will pay for your out-ofpocket costs With rising deductibles, premiums, co-pays and co-insurance, the inability to pay is a growing problem for people with Medicare. There may be assistance available to you if you cannot afford the out-of-pocket costs for your prescription medications. You should research your options now.

Staying Active
We can often be our own biggest hurdle when it comes to making healthy decisions. But sometimes all it takes is a gentle nudge from a friend or a fun new idea to spark your motivation. Here are simple ideas to help you live your best life and boost your mental and physical health.
Staying active: Push-ups While the thought of doing push-ups might be intimidating, there are plenty of ways to make the exercise simpler while still gaining strength in your arms, chest and back. Try a modification on the classic push-up that could even be done on a secure countertop in the convenience of your home. 1. Place your hands on top of a countertop or other firm surface. Make sure to spread your fingers wide.
2. As you lower yourself toward your hands, keep your shoulder blades down and back. 3. Once you have gone as low as you can, come back up and repeat.
To take a more active role in your health, some health plans, including UnitedHealthcare, offer gym memberships at no additional cost. To learn more, visit UHCMedicarePlans.com. Consult your doctor prior to beginning an exercise program or making changes to your lifestyle or health care routine. It’s Been A Year Today, I was able to fulfill a goal of mine since moving to Arizona. It was a personal goal and one I was most passionate about…and thanks to a good friend of mine who has connections into Arizona’s medical community, I was able to meet and visit with Dr. Thomas Beach. Dr. Beach (or just Tom, as he directed me), is an MD, Head and Senior Scientist at the Civin Laboratory for Neuropathology, and Director of the Brain and Body Donation Program, specializing in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s research. In other words, he is a brilliant researcher and doctor making strides at battling the Alzheimer’s epidemic.
We toured his ‘brain bank” as he explained the various findings they continue to uncover from the brain tissue they acquire. One fact that struck me: his brain bank will freeze the brain tissue on someone who has expired within 3 HOURS upon their death. They are the ONLY research institution in the WORLD that is able to do this, primarily because Dr. Beach feels the longer the tissue is allowed to break-down, the less time they have to determine how Alzheimer’s compromised it. I had a few specific questions for him, as understanding and communicating about Alzheimer’s disease has become my mission. One question for him was: How close are we to finding a cure? His answer was bleak: “Not very!” The sad part about that is: 20% of people over 80 years of age will develop some form of dementia and there’s nothing we can do about it. At least, not yet. But he and his team continue to test and focus on answers. Another question I had was more about me than anything: Is there anything (any drug) a person of high risk can take to block the disease or keep it at bay? His answer: “No, unfortunately.” ‘However’, he continued, ‘that isn’t to say there aren’t things one can do to help the brain Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine
handle the disease better’. He spoke first about DNA testing… There are reliable tests that can determine if someone has the E4 gene. The advantage of knowing if you have the E4 gene is you can prepare for what is coming. The disadvantage is that it is haunting for some. Like waiting for a title wave or an earthquake to hit. BUT, most importantly, one may have the E4 gene from one parent, but may have other genes from the other parent that could block the disease from striking. He spoke secondly about heart health as being one of the best defenses against Alzheimer’s. A stroke can do more damage to the brain than Alzheimer’s, so by focusing on taking care of our heart, we strengthen the way our brain handles the disease. Heart health is the stuff we’ve always heard about: eating right, trying to keep cholesterol down, exercise, lowering stress, etc. The one thing Dr. Beach reiterated was…there is NO way to know who will get Alzheimer’s disease. So I guess the decision for me to get a credible DNA test or not was somewhat answered…..I think. Submitted by Kathy Linton

Protect Your Pet Face it, everyone loves their pets. And they often want to take their pets wherever they’re going. In fact, a recent survey by Volvo Car USA and The Harris Poll found that 39% of pet owners would rather go on a road trip with their dog than a family member. Furthermore, nearly a third of dog owners reported leaving their furry friend home due to concerns about road safety. What can you do to keep your pet safer while driving? Dr. Elisa Mazzaferro, a veterinary specialist at Cornell University, shares some common but unsafe practices that pet owners should avoid. 1. Don’t drive with your pet in the front seat In the event of a collision, your pet can be thrown into the windshield, even if restrained. Unless the passenger side airbag is disengaged, airbag deployment alone can be very dangerous to a small pet. 2. Never drive with a pet on your lap In addition to distracting the driver, a pet can
get caught under the steering wheel and cause an accident or projected forward into the windshield in the event of a collision. Additionally, the pet is positioned between the airbag and the driver, which is dangerous to both the driver and the pet. 3. Never drive with an unrestrained pet in the vehicle Beyond the animal being a serious distraction, an abrupt stop can cause a pet to fall quickly, causing soft tissue injury or worse. In the event of an accident, a pet could jump from the vehicle and run into moving traffic. 4. Never allow your pet to lean out of a car window While it may look like dogs are enjoying the rush of the wind in their fur, debris can be forced into their eyes and cause abrasions or punctures to their cornea, which could result in serious injury or blindness. How can you keep your dog safely in your vehicle? To learn more about pet safety accessories, visit volvocars.com.
