From Me To You... I have found that as we get older it is hard to lose weight and sadly even easier to gain it. We also tend to gain it in more unhealthy areas - did you know that if you hold onto weight in their stomach you are more likely to have heart problems, diabetes and cancer? So my husband and I decided that we were going to head this situation off at the pass, so to speak. We bought the shakes and used the step trackers but the weight was not really shifting. There was a funny quote on the internet that sums up my problem. It goes something like this: “Diet: Breakfast - 2 egg whites, Lunch - Caesar Salad, dressing on the side, Snack - cheese crisps, Dinner - large pizza, family size bag of Dorritos, gallon of vanilla Ice cream.” That was becoming more and more like my daily routine. I was chock full of good intentions until I sat down at night to watch tv and boom, I ate everything I could grab. Realizing that we needed help we brought in a professional who would keep us accountable. Not only does he train us twice a week, he also helps with food choices and motivation. I am not a happy exerciser. I don’t like to sweat, or even move too much to be honest, and Ben is great at making it ... fun? Yes I can admit that exercise can be fun. We play games and laugh and sweat. A lot.

measured again in a few weeks. I do feel stronger and that was one of my goals so I guess I am getting something out of this. I just have to stay away from the pint of vanilla ice cream stashed under the broccoli in the freezer.

Congratulations to our Cutest Pet in Sun City Grand competition winner, Leo! Jeanne his pet parent says, “He came to live with me after my father passed away. He’s the coolest character on the block. Nothing fazes this big guy, including the horrendous storm we had on August 2nd. He just took it all in stride, laying by the window watching it all blow by. Everyone who walks into my house wants to take him home, but nope, he’s here to stay.”

Now on to the most annoying part of this experience. We do the same exercises, eat healthy food and limit our calories. My husband has lost over 10 pounds in three or so weeks and I can see he is becoming more healthy. Me? I have gained weight. I know that muscle weighs more than fat and I think I am losing inches but it is quite demoralizing to see the fat melt off someone else and not experience that myself. We had all our measurements taken before we started this and I am holding on to the idea of seeing those numbers go down when we get Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine

Home Sweet Home Did you know that many police departments have a community affairs officer whose primary goal is to build a strong working relationship with the community? That means you have access to a trained safety expert who wants to give you ideas to keep your home and neighborhood safe. Read on for simple home security hacks from a recent home safety evaluation conducted by a police officer. 1. Change the locks When was the last time you changed the locks? How many previous owners have there been and how many keys have been given out? You never know who has a second copy, and for less than $100, you can change your locks immediately. 2. Replace outdoor lightbulbs If you don’t have outdoor flood lights, get them. If you have them, make sure the bulbs are in working order. 3. Place an alarm sign in your yard Many would-be thieves won’t approach a house if they think it has an alarm.

6 Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine

4. Buy an indoor camera Cameras can capture a suspect in the act and let homeowners check the footage from anywhere.

5. Get out the garden shears Every bush outside of your windows should be below the window line, usually 2-3 feet in height, to maximize your visibility from the inside of your house to the outside, so that means you must trim your bushes. 6. Protect your neighborhood There are many measures you can take to improve your community safety, with varying levels of affordability. Outdoor security cameras, can reduce crime and prevent would-be criminals from entering the neighborhood. 8. Ask for a security survey Officers will walk around your house, inside and out, to assess its safety and could reveal some surprising tips. They want to help, and they are motivated to solve and prevent crime. For more information on keeping your home and neighborhood secure, visit www.flocksafety.com/ securityhacks.

Peace On Earth

“Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Philippians 4:8)

Joanie Shawhan wrote that she was diagnosed with a floater on her eyes – a blob that floated on her eyeball obstructing the light. Her eye doctor cautioned her not to focus her gaze on the floater. Doing so causes the nerve impulses to be directed toward it, further distorting her vision. The brain is wired to strengthen what we focus on. Do you suppose that is why scripture repeatedly encourages us to think about positive things? When we focus on our grievances, our failures, our problems, it’s like the nerve impulses are directed toward these things distorting our vision of the full picture. We become blind to God’s blessings. We miss the gestures of kindness, the caring words, the reassurances, the smiles of others. We lose hope because we focus on the problem and not the God who restores us.

problems. The media focuses on these problems. They are encouraged to do so because “bad news sells.” How unfortunate. I’d sure like some balance. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the media gave equal exposure to the stories of compassion, people helping one another and forgiving one another? However, it isn’t the media’s job to make us feel better. It’s really our job to balance our exposure to the negative with a greater focus on the positive. It is our job to notice the good and dwell on it, give thanks for it and imitate it. Our brains are so wired to search out the negative, that we tend to gravitate to those sights, those posts, those conversations. However, we can rewire our brains. We can choose to change our focus. Let’s notice both the good in ourselves and in others. It is our job to encourage others, notice kindnesses, say thank you and build others up. And when we do, our nerve impulses are directed toward goodness. Suddenly our challenges are put into new perspective. And that is a perspective that I want. I pray you know this perspective too! Submitted by Valerie Fairchild, pastor of Spirit Song church in Vistancia

What is your ‘floater’ that keeps you from seeing the goodness and presence of God in your situation? What is taking your attention away from focusing on the One who heals and redeems and wraps us in arms of grace? Yes, there are problems in this world. Serious

Victim or Survivor Although the definition said “A cancer survivor is anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer and is alive today”. The first time I read it, I didn’t feel like a survivor. Cancer victim seemed a much more accurate term. But then the dust settled, treatment began, and I realized the “victim” thing just doesn’t fit.

I tossed the victim/survivor issue around and finally came to the conclusion that a victim and survivor are the same thing-almost. The differences are subtle but at the same time enormous. The first thing I Realized is that a survivor is a victim with attitude. After I understood that, things were a little better. I had a choice about something – I could be a cancer victim or cancer survivor. I liked the idea of having an attitude and I like the sound of being a survivor. I thought about my life living with metastatic Breast Cancer and trying to be the epitome of a cancer survivor. To ME, Reba survivorship was state of mind. Despite the moments of sadness and pain, I Have never lost my ability to laugh about absurdities of cancer and my cancer treatments

I treasure every moment and face each new situation as best as I can. I know that eventually cancer will get my body; however I will not allow it to take away my spirit. Very slowly the differences of being a victim and survivor became clear to me, so I started making a list. Here is Reba Mason-Mikutowicz list. “This is just a start add your own thoughts Being a victim is a state of body. Being a survivor is a state of mind. A victim fears her hair falling out. A survivor knows bald is beautiful. A victim knows about feeling down. A survivor knows feeling down is okay. A victim dreads the side-effects of chemo. A survivor wonders how soon can I cancel my membership in the chemo club. A victim goes to see a doctor. A survivor consults with her physician and ask questions. A victim gets caught in despair. A survivor prays a lot . A victim feels helpless. A survivor says “thanks with dignity and grace . From the moment we are diagnosed, we are victims . WE MUST CHOOSE TO BE SURVIVORS. I KNOW I DO. Thank you, Reba

Furry Friends As you’re filling the candy buckets and assembling the perfect costumes, be sure to heed these tips from the experts at PetSmart for a Halloween filled with pet-friendly fun:

Out and about Make sure pets have proper identification by microchipping and registering your pet’s microchip, and keeping identification and registration tags on their collars. This is especially important around Halloween, when open doors offer more opportunity for escape. If your pet will be joining the family while trick-or-treating, be sure they are visible to motorists by using a reflective collar, harness or leash. Costume concerns Just like with children, there are safety issues to consider when costuming your pets. Not all dogs like wearing clothes and some may become stressed or agitated while wearing a costume. However, many dogs just need a little coaxing and positive reinforcement.

Keep the Halloween fun going by establishing some rules for your family and any guests joining the festivities: * Xylitol a sugar substitute found in candy, gum, mints and baked goods can be extremely dangerous to pets, even in small amounts. Just 1/8 teaspoon can cause dangerously low blood sugar in dogs and 1/2 teaspoon can cause liver damage. If xylitol is consumed by your pet, take him or her to a veterinarian immediately. * Natural stimulants in chocolate can cause a range of symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea and abnormal heart rhythm. * Raisins may cause a toxic reaction in dogs from vomiting to kidney failure. * Cellophane, plastic and paper from candy wrappers and lollipop sticks can cause gastrointestinal upset. * As an alternative to sharing dangerous snacks, stock up on some seasonal dog-friendly treats and set out a pet-specific bowl. Find more tips and tricks for keeping your pets safe this Halloween at PetSmart.com.

* Start with a simple accessory, like a bandana, working your way up to a costume. * Make sure costumes include eye and ear holes, and if they don’t, consider removing whole portions of the costume to ensure your pet’s ability to see, hear and breathe. Make sure there isn’t anything that could be a tripping hazard. Also, be sure to check the costume for little parts within biting or chewing distance. * Dogs can overheat easily, so ensure your dog’s clothing is not too bulky or heavy if the weather is warm. * In the end, the top priority should be your pet’s comfort level. “It’s fun to include our pets in our celebrations, but it’s also important to be aware of the dangers associated with Halloween to ensure their safety,” said Jennifer Freeman, DVM, PetSmart’s resident veterinarian and pet care expert. 10 Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine

Medicare Part D Medicare Annual Enrollment runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, so now is the time for a refresher on key words to inform your coverage decisions for 2019.

Deductible, copay and coinsurance A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket in a given year for eligible prescription drugs before your plan’s coverage kicks in. Some plans charge a copay each time you fill a prescription. For example, a plan may require you to pay $2 when you fill a prescription for generic drugs and a higher amount for brand-name drugs. With coinsurance, you pay a set percentage of the cost of the drug instead of the flat fee associated with a copay. Formulary Part D plans are offered by private insurance companies, and each plan has what’s known as a formulary, a list of the prescription drugs covered under the plan. And keep in mind that plan

formularies can change from year to year, so don’t assume that the prescription drugs covered under your current plan will carry over in 2019.

Drug tiers A Medicare Part D plan’s formulary is made up of tiers, depending on the cost of the medications. The lower tiers generally include preferred generic drugs, and many plans cover these medicines with low or no copay or coinsurance. Higher tiers generally include brand-name drugs and specialty medications and tend to have higher copays or coinsurance. So, talk to your doctor to see if the brand-name prescription you take can be replaced with a generic version. Preferred pharmacy network A Part D plan may designate a preferred network of pharmacies, and if you use these pharmacies, you can save money on prescriptions. The donut hole The majority of Part D plans have a coverage gap known as a “donut hole.” For example, in 2019, you enter this donut hole once your out-ofpocket costs (including deductibles, copays and coinsurance) for prescription drugs reach $3,820. While you’re in the donut hole, you will pay a percentage of the cost of the drugs. In 2019, once your out-of-pocket costs reach $5,100, you exit the donut hole and pay a smaller coinsurance. But, the days of the donut hole are numbered. Under a provision of the 2010 Affordable Care Act, the coverage gap has been steadily shrinking. Beginning in 2019, the maximum you will pay in the coverage gap for a branded drug is 25 percent of a drug’s cost. For generic drugs, it is 37 percent, but in 2020, that will be reduced to 25 percent as well. To learn more about Medicare or Medicare Annual Enrollment, visit UHCOpenEnrollment. com

Nutrition

If you’ve struggled with your weight, you know that fat can be a bad three-letter word. You’ve warded against it, tried to reduce it and agonized over what fat can do to your self-esteem and your waist line. But how much do you really know about fat? And how much could you improve your life if you knew just a little bit more? According to the MDVIP Fat IQ Survey, most adults fail a basic quiz on fat facts. And a staggering 82 percent of adults are over their ideal weight. Whether you are one of them or you want to avoid weight problems in the future, it’s time to put fat in your crosshairs. Here are four things you need to do to boost your own fat IQ and live a healthier life. * Recognize your hang-ups. Whether fast food is your go-to, you travel and can’t find healthy options on the road, or you’re a late-night snacker, your lifestyle is adding fat to your diet. Recognize where your weak spots are and take steps to correct them. Pack nutritious snacks in your carry-on, or go for a walk when the urge to eat a cookie strikes. Just changing up

your routine once or twice a week can make a difference. * Be open and honest with your doctor. Eightythree percent of adults said hearing from a doctor that they need to lose weight would motivate them to take action. Yet, most doctors aren’t able to spend enough time to really delve into your eating and other lifestyle habits. If you’re serious about managing your weight, you want a primary care doctor who will help uncover your personal obstacles and work with you on a plan to reach your goals. * Learn the difference between fats. Not all fats are created equal. In fact, did you know some fats are actually good for you? Unsaturated fats found in plants, for example, can improve your cholesterol level and lower your risk for heart disease. Saturated fats and especially trans fats, on the other hand, found in fried and processed foods, should be rarely eaten or avoided all together because they have the potential to promote heart disease. * Find the hidden “bad fat” in your food. Restaurant menus that include calorie counts have certainly been eye-opening for many people, but the food’s fat content is often missing or overlooked. The same applies when you’re at the grocery store. In addition to looking at the amount of fat on food labels, make sure you scrutinize the list of ingredients. You want to stay away from foods that have the words “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated,” which are unhealthy trans fats. Having a strong understanding of fats is critical to achieving a healthy lifestyle, so don’t delay in giving yourself a boost. Apply these tips to raise your fat IQ. School Zone Finding the support teachers need during the school year

The school year has begun, and while the backto-school expenses of many parents are done for the summer, students will still have ongoing needs throughout the year. But parents are not the only ones who spend their own hard-earned cash to make the school year a success, and they are not the only ones that can expect the costs to continue throughout the year. According to Bankrate, the average teacher spends roughly $530 of their own money to pay for supplies, snacks and other items for use by their students during the school year. These supplies often include things like paper, rulers, scissors, notebooks, pencils, glue and poster boards, and while they must be purchased at the beginning of the year, they often must be replaced throughout the year as well. While these expenses can quickly add up, teachers are rarely compensated for these costs, and yet still cover these in order to create the best educational experience for their students all year long.

Estrella Publishing - It’s A Grand Life magazine

Saving money on your expenses For teachers, the example above is probably all too familiar. Additional expenses small or big can take a toll, so minimizing costs here and there is crucial. It all begins with shopping at the right places with the right prices. Staples, the back-to-school specialty store, always offers a diverse collection of name-brand and exclusive supplies, services and resources to meet the demands of any classroom. In addition, Staples offers a 110 percent price match guarantee within 14 days. Perhaps most importantly, Staples offers instore specialists that are always available to help you with your needs, ensuring you get the best support you possibly can and have all of your questions answered. Staples also carries supplies all year long, at competitive prices whether it is the second week of school or the second semester. It is the one-stop destination for this school year and beyond. Legal Advice 5 REASONS TO HAVE A TRUST

A Revocable Living Trust creates the legal framework for your assets to be handled if you become sick or incapacitated or upon your death. Here are 5 of the top reasons to have a trust: 1. Your assets can be distributed without giving information to all heirs. Probates require notice to all heirs—including omitted children or siblings. 2. Assets located in multiple states can be managed without court involvement in any state. 3. A trust allows controlled distribution to minor

children or grandchildren. Without a trust, a court conservatorship will be required for distributions to minor which have a value over $10,000. Conservatorships involve annual expenses for court approved accountings, use of the funds is limited and all funds are dispersed at 18. 4. A trust can include incentives for children or grandchildren to go to college, stay away from drugs and become gainfully employed. 5. When you have multiple beneficiaries, including charities, there is centralized management of assets by the Successor Trustee of your choice.
