From Me To You...

I pulled a crumpled lottery ticket from the bottom of my purse the other day and thought to myself, “I really should have won this by now.”

I have been plunking down $10 or so a week for the last quarter of a century and have very little to show for it. I follow all the rules, buying a ticket for all the big jackpots, I am ‘in it to win it’. And yet, no money. I take that back. There was that one time when we got 5 numbers. You would think that would get at least a few thousand dollars.

Sadly our big payout was a mere $121.

I know that if I had taken that $10 a week and deposited it at a rate of 5% I would have saved around $40,000. That is using my remedial math skills so I could be off by a few thousand.

In fact the more I try to do the math the bigger my headache is getting. So if anyone out there wants to figure it out and let me know, go ahead.

However you look at it, that is a big chunk of change.

So why do I do it? Well for me it is not about the payout. Sure the money would be wonderful, but I am not crazy enough to believe I would actually win. No, what I get out of this game is a dream. For the whole 3 or 4 days between buying the ticket and finding out that I am yet again not a millionaire, I have a world of wonderful possibilities. I could fund my kids college anywhere they wanted to go, pay off their debts, pay off my debts, buy everyone a car, travel, travel some more, and live a life of freedom from the day to day drudgery. I would, of course, also save a large percentage so I would not join the ranks of lottery winning bankruptees. That ending is not part of my dream.

So for a while my life is bright and shiny. Then I come back down to earth, turn on my computer and get back to work. I glance around my office and see pictures of my children graduating from college.

My daughter’s wedding photo and information for my son’s wedding later this year. I see my dog curled up at my feet, legs twitching as he chases rabbits in his sleep. I remember that I need to take my son to football practice and plan for a date night with my husband. I have a pretty wonderful life right now.

The thing we need to remember is that while it is wonderful to dream and build castles in the sky, there is a real world right here in front of us. It can be bright and shiny too. I have great kids who are growing and achieving their goals, a husband who loves me and is always by my side, a roof over my head and clothes on my back. Not to mention a devoted, smelly dog. Not too shabby.

What playing the lottery actually does for me is make me appreciate all the wonderful things that exist in my life right now. My advice to you is to keep your eyes open and follow your dreams for sure, but it doesn’t hurt to buy a ticket occasionally. Someone’s got to win it, right?

Peace On Earth

I am grateful for community working together to help others far and near. I want to update you on the World Vision 6K Water Walk that Spirit Song church sponsored May 19 to raise funds to install a reliable clean deep water well in the village of a developing country. Our community gathered together to walk 6K, the average distance that women and children walk for clean water.

We experienced the time it takes. No wonder it prevents women from earning a living and keeps children from attending school. We had the advantage of carrying our own fresh water in bottles and replenishing them as needed. We also did not have to carry the large heavy jerry can those who walk for water use to haul their water.

Together we raised over $15,500! Our goal of $15,000 was bold and with God and a caring community of people, we exceeded our goal.

People saw a need and had compassion even to ‘neighbors’ across the ocean. Imagine a dream come true for the people of the village who will soon be able to turn a spigot and get cool clean water even in times of drought! Illness from contaminated water will cease. Clean available water is of huge importance in the fight against

extreme poverty and illness. Thank you to all who donated, walked, and prayed.

Think of it, the 67 on team, including children, accomplished a well for a village of about 300 people!

I am grateful to say that I see this kind of community effort regularly. There are those who volunteer to lead clubs and classes, children’s programs, Veteran helps, volunteer at food banks, and surround a grieving neighbor with food and the comfort of presence. Others drive neighbors to doctors, pick up groceries, write cards, or sit and visit. Some make prayer blankets, do home maintenance, cook, clean and take someone to church. That’s the strength of loving our neighbors near and far.

Jesus said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’

The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31) Are you looking for groups you can serve with?

Yum Yum! Texas Ribs

2 racks Pork Spareribs, membrane removed 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar 1 1/2 tablespoons ancho chile powder 1 tablespoon smoked or sweet paprika 1 1/2 teaspoons onion powder 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt Pinch cayenne or chipotle powder Freshly ground black pepper Barbecue sauce 2 tablespoons canola oil 1 small sweet yellow onion, coarsely chopped 3 cloves garlic, coarsely chopped 1 cup ketchup 1/3 cup cold water 1 chipotle chile, chopped 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar 1 heaping tablespoon, Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoon molasses 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar (or sherry vinegar) 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons ancho chile powder 1 tablespoon sweet Spanish paprika

1. To make barbecue sauce, heat oil in saucepan over medium-high until warm and shimmering.

Add onion and cook until softened. Add garlic and cook 1 minute. Stir in ketchup and water; bring to boil, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to mediumlow and simmer for 5 minutes.

2. Stir in remaining ingredients; bring to a simmer.

Cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 10 minutes. Let cool for at least 10 minutes.

3. Scrape the barbecue sauce into bowl of food processor or blender; puree until smooth. Sauce will be very thick; let cool to room temperature.

Taste and season with salt and pepper.

4. Heat oven to 200F. Place wire rack on a baking sheet. Combine brown sugar, ancho chile powder, paprika, onion powder, salt, cayenne and black pepper in small bowl; mix well.

5. Place 2 sheets of heavy duty aluminum foil on counter. Place each rib rack on a piece of foil; sprinkle generous amount of spice rub over meaty side and massage into the meat. Turn over ribs and repeat on bone side. Seal ribs in foil and place, meaty side down, on rack on baking sheet.

6. Bake ribs at 200F for 4 hours; reduce oven temperature to 175F and bake an additional 2 hours.

7. Open foil packets and discard juices. Brush barbecue sauce over ribs; cut and serve.

The Language We Speak Instead of English

I was born in Iowa and lived there for fifty years.

A five-year-old daughter of a new acquaintance from Canada once listened intently to the conversation going on around her. She shyly approached my chair and said softly, “Would you please say something in ‘Iowish’?”

Her parents, my wife, and I laughed, and someone told Jennifer that “Iowans speak English, just like Canadians.” That made us laugh again, and we said, “Well, not just like Canadians, eh?”

It is true. Nor do Iowans necessarily sound like New Yorkers, Arizonans, Washingtonians, or Minnesotans. In fact, there are some words that sound different in Western Iowa from their Eastern Iowa sounds.

Yet the variety of spoken sounds for the same words in this country have many similarities, and they are all identifiably different from the sounds

of British speech. Americans may write English, for the most part, but we all speak American, which we are more apt to pronounce according to our own region: “’Murkin,” Amer’kin,” “A-marekin,” or, my preference, “Mare Kin.” Arizona in general, and Sun City Grand in particular, are both inhabited by transplants from across the nation, especially from Northern states. Listen carefully and one hears variations in both pronunciation and word choices, typical of sounds in the home states of those residents.

Many pronunciations are regional. Others are typical across the country, yet are different sounds from dictionary prescriptions. As we celebrate the variations of recipes, fashions, customs, ethnicity, beliefs, architecture, and so many other aspects of American life, we may also celebrate the variations in regional speech.

They simply add zest to spoken Mare Kin. The following brief list is meant to entertain, not to ridicule. Readers, I am sure, will be able to add their own examples from wherever they learned to talk..

PARTIAL DICTIONARY OF MARE KIN: AIR: “error,” as in trial and AIR. AIR: “are” in the South. “AIR ya comin’?”

ARE: “our” in the North. “C’mon ta ARE house.”

ARE: sixty minutes in the South. Also what some Southerners breathe.

AWNT: your mother’s sister in Boston.

AUNT (say “ont”) your mother’s other sister in Minneapolis.

ANT: your dad’s sister in Des Moines.

AINT: your deddy’s other sister in Mayberry.

DAM: what beavers build in the North.

DAYUM: what beavers build in the South.

DADDY: a child’s father in Illinois, Ohio, among other places.

DEDDY: a dad in Texas, North Carolina, Georgia, for example.

Die-Dee: your pappy in East Tennessee.

DIE-DEE: a diaper among older Iowans who remember cloth diapers.

DOCK: what Northerners tie boats to.

DOCK: when the lights go out in “Hot-fud,” Connecticut, and in parts of the South.

FIR: perhaps the best example of universal Mare Kin. Within a sentence, it means “for” in nearly every American locale. Fir example: “Whud ja pay FIR that?” or, “Wait FIR me.” (At the end of sentences, it is usually pronounced as “fore.”

“Whud ja do that for?”)

FUST: a Southern first.

GULL: “girl” in Southern USA. HAHD: “difficult” or “not soft” in the East and down East. “It was nevah HAHD fir Ted to be reelected in Massachusetts.”

HARD: “not soft” in much of the North.

HARD: “hired” man in most of the South. “Hoired” man in Charleston.

JUICE: “electricity” in Appalachia.

‘LECTRICITY: “electricity” in typical Mare Kin. MUNDEE: Day after Sundee. We also say “Toosdee, Wensdee, Thursdee,” and “Fridee” when we use the words in sentences. Add “Sattidee,” or “Sat’dee,” or even “Satterdee,” to complete the week.

NEW YOKE: what Southerners call New York.

N’ YAWK: what people who live there call New York.

RAT: Southern “right.” “Come inna house RAT now!”

RETARD: A Southerner who has taken Social

Security. “He is RETARD now after forty years of teachin’ school.

TAHD: “fatigued” down East.

TIE YERD: “fatigued” in most northern states.

TARRED: “fatigued” in the South.

TOMATO: Mare Kin vegetable.

TOMAHTO: Boston vegetable.

‘MATER: Appalachian vegetable. (Same pattern for “potato, potahto,” and “tater.”)

WARSHINGTON: first President of the U.S. in the Midlands and in the state of “Warshington” out on the “Wess coast.”

WASHINGTON: first President of the United States in Michigan, among other places.

WASH’TIN: first President in Georgia, for example.

WRETCHED: Southern name for “Dick.”

“WRETCHED Nixon resigned his office as President of the United States.”

That gives you the idea. Once you tune yer rears, yule hear Mare Kin pronunciations instead of English throughout the United States.

Living With Faith “What the world needs now”

Fifty years ago a song was introduced that became an instant hit. It’s title, “What the World Needs Now.” It caught on for several reasons, but I believe, the words ring true today, more than ever. All we have to do is turn our TV’s on and witness the madness that surrounds us. No longer is it necessary for the media to create sensationalism to create a following. We are the characters in an ongoing epic of melodrama and mayhem.

Read the words, listen to the melody and you will find the accurate cry of the generations past and the hope, as well as the despair, of today.

Imagine the lament of a parent who witnesses the senseless death of a child caught in the quagmire of hate. Hear the cry of people taken from their homes and indiscriminately slaughtered because their beliefs differ from their murderers. Watch the planes drop bombs on cities and dwellings causing panic and displacement. Witness the world pontificating about issues that are so far removed from reality.

Today, more that ever, we sit in our comfortable homes and stare at pictures of atrocities only read about a generation ago. The glamour of conflict has disappeared and has been replaced by the actuality of the gory details. Extremism has replaced common decency. We no longer think in terms of “Peace on Earth, good will toward men.” This has become a momentary slogan followed the next day by sameness.

Our fields are now strewn with bodies. Our meadows are soaked with the blood of the innocent. The lights of heaven are clouded with the smoke of bombs and cannons. The rainbow, which was set to remind us of God’s compassion, has added a black stream in mourning for civilization’s ability to destroy rather than perpetuate.

We ask God to listen to our cry, but we are the one’s who are not hearing the sounds of bitterness.

During the most heinous period in human history (World War II), the question was asked, “Where was God?” And the answer given, “where was man?” Where are we? Where are we going?

It’s a conversation no family wants to have, but one that can be vitally important - talking to a loved one about memory loss or cognitive decline. Mary Foss of Eagan, Minnesota, said she knew it was time to broach this sensitive topic with her husband Darrell when she noticed he was having difficulty doing the home improvement projects he had enjoyed all his life.

As Darrell’s retreat from activities he once loved grew, so did Mary’s concern. Eventually, Mary and the couple’s adult daughter, Michele, decided to share their concerns.

“We just told him that something is not right and you need to see a doctor and figure out what it is,” Foss said. “I thought maybe he had a mini-stroke or a brain tumor. We were shocked when the diagnosis came back as mild cognitive impairment, possibly Alzheimer’s.”

The Fosses’ story is not uncommon. Talking about memory or cognition problems with a family member can be daunting for many families.

“As difficult as it was to receive Darrell’s diagnosis, it provided an answer to what we’re facing,” Foss said. “We took a few days to grieve, but then we focused our attention on getting educated about the disease and what we can do to fight it.

We are staying active and focusing on the things that are most important to us.”

Life As A Caregiver It has been six months since I placed my mother in a group home care facility for Alzheimer’s patients. The care she receives there is very good. She always looks clean, she is well-fed, and they make her as comfortable as possible.

But I am losing her.

I used to visit her about every other day. Now it is once-a-week. Why? Well, it’s certainly not because I’m too busy to go there or that it’s too far away or that I don’t love my mother enough!

The reason for that is it makes me sad to see her there….even on a good day. By a “good day”, I mean, a day that she knows it’s me; a day that we have a small amount of conversation. The people who care for her are nice and converse with her the best they can. But, mom is in a place where she is unable to retain an attention-span or care much about the things around her. When she knows it’s me, I suspect she knows I’m someone special, but I doubt that she truly knows I’m her daughter.

About a month ago, Hospice contacted me after talking with mom’s care staff. Their call scared me at first because I only knew Hospice as providing end-of-life care. However, I learned that they offer specialized care services, as an extra step to stabilize mom and keep her as healthy as possible. Such services are covered under Medicare and include a nurse who comes everyother-day to check her vitals and administer any meds she may need, a social worker to make sure she’s being cared-for properly by the group home, and a spiritual advisor who will pray with her should she want that. The nurse calls me once-a-week to keep me updated on her condition and to offer me any suggestions.

The woman I see laying in the bed or reclined in the family room chair each time I come to visit isn’t the woman I once knew. She is alive, but not living. She is my mother, but she doesn’t mother.

She is fading and moving through the last stages of this horrible disease. And all I can do is watch.

And pray (to whomever represents my spiritual strength) to take her and give her the peace she deserves. That is my preparation for the inevitable that is coming soon.

The take-away here is that there ARE people and organizations around who can help with this inevitability. It is NOT in our best interest to hide our heads in the sand, no matter how much we’d like to. Hospice is a Heaven-sent. Use them.

Let them help you and your loved one as they are helping my mom and me. Believe me, it is the best thing you can do…and one of the only things!
