From Me To You...

Welcome! to the April edition of It’s A Grand Life magazine.

During a recent conversation with my Mum I found out that my childhood home is up for short term rent. For the next 6 months I could rent my memories. Let me tell you it was very tempting.

Due to the location of this house it would probably cost more to get there than it would to rent, and I really could not take advantage of it this year as my summer is ridiculously overbooked already. Plus it is unfurnished and England in the summer is not exactly comfortable to start with.

But still. It made me think, can you ever really go home?

I flipped through the online pictures and immediately a sense of outrage overtook me. They had cut down nearly every tree that had surrounded my home. The cherry tree that I lay under reading Tess of the D’Urbervilles - gone. The oak I learned to climb and hide in - gone. The broad limbed beauty my siblings and I built a tree house in - gone.

Despite all these glitches it is still the home I grew up in and it holds a special place in my heart.

The indoor shutters are still there - 19th century insulation at it’s best. The amazing staircase that wraps around the outside of the entrance hall reminds me of decorating trees at Christmas. And sliding down the bannister, to my parent’s horror.

The long driveway where I learned how to use a stick shift and had the horrible job of shovelling when it snowed still winds past fields and around the front of the house.

Yes, the house has changed but my home is still there, peeking out behind the improvements that subsequent owners have made. Anyone want to go in on a temporary house share with me?

What else had changed? Well it seemed they had removed one bathroom only to relocate it on the opposite side of the house. Why? Beats me.

In the kitchen there was an addition. A stove. Do people not know how to use an Aga anymore?

Even if you don’t know, you can learn. One of my fondest memories was cooking pancakes on the griddle of that Aga. Sure it could be tricky cooking a cake in an oven that was powered with coal but where is your sense of adventure?

I noted that with an energy rating of ‘F’ they had not decided to improve the heating or insulation in the house. Now that I could have got behind.

Peace On Earth

Studies reveal that people are seeking two things; to know their purpose and to make a difference in the world. We aren’t really surprised by this. We can feel it in ourselves. We want our lives to have meaning and to contribute to the good of others.

Sadly, we don’t always exercise our gifts. We get excited when someone tells us about a great way to help in the community, but when it comes to signing up and committing, well, we sometimes back off. There are other things we’d like to do.

We have a lot on our plate right now. Have you reacted this way? I admit I have.

Let’s face it, serving others is an interruption.

However, we can look at this as an opportunity.

It is God who invites us to take part in making a positive difference in this world, serving as God’s hands, feet and heart, as the slogan of Spirit Song church reads.

I’ve found that ‘divine appointments’ have a surprising flip side. Even though the timing never seems optimal, something amazing happens. I find joy and energy in jumping into the opportunity. I enjoy seeing lives impacted for

the better. I am in awe that God lets me partner with him in great adventures. Even when I don’t see the outcome, I still know peace at having contributed to the good of others.

Last year, Spirit Song church sponsored a 6K Walk for Water in the community of Vistancia to raise funds to help a village without access to clean water receive a deep water well providing both a clean and dependable water source. (6K is the average distance countless women and children typically walk daily to find clean water in developing countries.) Many people joined in the walk and others chose to sponsor this great cause. We funded an entire well with installation!

We are excited to announce that we are sponsoring another 6K Water Walk on May 19 beginning at 8:00 a.m. in the community of Vistancia (Happy Valley and 303). Be a hero. Ask A Pharmacist There’s no denying that prescription drug coverage and medications can be complex territory. Enter UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement’s Chief Pharmacy Officer Mike Anderson, PharmD, who has spent his career navigating the ins and outs of the Rx world.

Below, Anderson answers some common questions people ask about drug coverage and prescriptions.

Q. How do I know if my prescriptions are covered by my Medicare plan?

A. Whether you get coverage through Medicare Advantage or a standalone Part D plan, each has a list of prescription drugs covered. You’ll want to look closely to make sure your medications are covered. Health insurers post listss online, or you can call your plan to request a printed version.

Keep in mind that plans can change from year

to year, so don’t assume that prescription drugs covered this year will always carry over.

Q. How can I save money while remaining on my

medications?

A. There are many ways to do that: Home-delivery pharmacy benefits can save money and a trip to the pharmacy. Some mailorder pharmacies offer the convenience of ordering a three-month supply of drugs delivered to your home for less than purchasing at a retail location. Switching to generic drugs or drugs on a lower tier of the formulary is another step that could save money. If you are taking brand-name medications now, discuss generic alternatives with your doctor.

Q. Can I split my pills in half?

A. Talk to your doctor about whether pill-splitting for your medication is medically advised. Also, consult your pharmacist on whether the actual pill form presents risks. Some pills are dangerous when split, because splitting affects how quickly the drug is released into your body. Other pills become ineffective when split, because the pill contains a coating to protect it from stomach acid, and splitting the pill breaks that coating.

Q. I take a lot of pills daily. One I take three times a day. Some I just take once. I get busy and forget to take my pills. Can I just take them all in the morning?

A. It’s important to take your medicine as your doctor prescribed it. Some medications need to be taken at specific times to be effective. Plus, taking all your medications at one time can be dangerous as you run the risk of potential adverse interactions, side effects and even overdosing.

Money Matters

Should You Make Extra Mortgage Payments or Boost Your Investments?

Every month, you pay your mortgage. And, depending on your circumstances, you may be able to afford to put in additional payments – perhaps sizable ones. But should you? Or, if you really have the extra money, should you invest it?

Initially, you might think it would be quite nice to rid yourself of that mortgage sooner, rather than later. But is it really the burden it seems?

Actually, you get some real benefits from a mortgage. It certainly provides something of great value to you – your home. If you got your mortgage – or refinanced your home – within the past decade or so, you are borrowing money at a pretty favorable interest rate, by historical standards. And even assuming a mild rate of inflation, such as we’ve had for the past several years, you’ll essentially be paying off your mortgage with cheaper and cheaper dollars over time. Plus, your interest payments may well be tax deductible.

(The new tax laws limit deductions on new mortgages of $750,000 or more. For questions on your specific situation, consult your tax professional.)

So, given these advantages, an argument could be made that you should be in no hurry to pay 10 It’s A Grand Life

off your mortgage. Still, you might be tempted to make the extra payments because you’ll be building home equity. After all, isn’t this equity valuable?

It is – to a degree. The larger your home equity, the more money you’ll get to keep when you eventually sell your home.

But in the meantime, that home equity may be less useful than you might imagine. For one thing, just building more equity won’t make your home more valuable – it will rise (or fall) in value along with whatever’s happening in the housing market.

By contrast, you could take the extra money and buy more shares in an investment such as stocks – and the more shares you own, the more valuable your investment will be if the price per share rises.

Also, if you were to experience a temporary job loss or some other financial emergency, your home equity might not help you much; if you’re not working, you could even have trouble getting a home equity loan. Conversely, your investment portfolio can offer you greater liquidity, depending on your specific investments. Most investment vehicles, such as stocks and bonds, generally can be sold quickly, without much difficulty.

(Keep in mind, though, that if you were forced to sell investments when their price was down, you could take a loss on the sale.)

Clearly, you could gain some advantages by using any extra money to invest, rather than paying down your mortgage. Nonetheless, you may simply get emotional and psychological satisfaction by speeding your progress toward the day when your house is paid off – and that type of satisfaction certainly has value. You’ll need to weigh these intangible factors carefully in deciding whether to increase your investments or make extra mortgage payments – because, ultimately, you need to feel that you’re doing the right thing, for the right reasons.

Living With Faith Lost memories

I would venture a guess that nobody will remember the forty-fifth anniversary of the end of the undeclared Viet Nam War (1973). Nowhere will we find mention of it, nor the tremendous affect it had on the conscience of this country.

Nowhere will we find mention of the close to 60,00 of our finest, who perished in this fiasco of unparalleled proportions.

Nowhere will we find the number of wounded and maimed both physically and mentally. Nowhere will we find mention of the trillions of dollars expended to execute the disaster that ensued.

In the early years of this undeclared war the list of those killed in action were published daily. Day after day, the list became so numerous that the media neglected to remind us of the tragic end to so many who could have become husbands, or fathers, or entrepreneurs, or laborers, or teachers. Their possibilities were endless. Their dreams and aspirations destroyed in an instant.

There was a song written that contained the phrase, “Where have all the young men gone, longtime passing?” The ground they cherished and fought for, this America, has now received their remains. The country they loved once forgot them and the memories of their lives and the lives of their loved ones. The Valley of the shadow of death has consumed our beloveds and now cries out for us to remember.

America has lost but two wars in its long history: the War of 1812 and of course, Viet Nam. In both instances we felt ourselves to be invincible.

Such is the fate of the young and innocent – to underestimate our fallibilities. Since the end of World War ll we considered ourselves to be the savior of the world, the redeemer of glory, the salvation for mankind. Viet Nam changed all that and showed the world and us that conflict with no purpose is an exercise in futility.

Our hearts are laden with guilt. When we see a person in uniform we rush to thank him or her for service rendered.

Remember when our heroes returned from Viet Nam? We treated them we disrespect and even disgust.

We sent our young men and women into harms way without an opportunity to say no to the call.

The indiscriminate killings were the only tales we heard about or read about. We abandoned them, mocked them, spit on them, and made them feel ashamed. Shame on us!

Perhaps it was our collective failing that caused us to turn our backs on those forgotten martyrs.

Perhaps when we saw a veteran and a person in uniform we showed our disdain because we could not face them and explain why – why they sacrificed so much for so little. Perhaps their offering of body and soul dimmed our memories.

A monument is all we have to offer. Memories of a time that left us bereft fill our hearts and we are at a loss as to how to right the wrong. A nation that once adored its military and lifted them to enormous heights cannot fathom the tragedy of defeat. Those who sent them are unscathed.

Those who went are tortured. Those who stayed behind remain bewildered. Our nation, for the very first time, began a soul-searching adventure that caused so much pain we tried to erase it from our minds.

We need to pause and remember. We need to remind ourselves that they did not die in vain.

We need to gather this year, more than ever, and stand proudly behind all who serve. We need to pray that God will continue to bless us all because of them. May all merciful God continue to grant them eternal peace in His loving arms as they reap the reward of everlasting life.

Eat Healthier Here are 10 easy ways to eat healthier:

Start small. You don’t have to completely overhaul your diet in a day. Start with small things, like taking your lunch to work instead of eating out, cutting down on soda or getting a new cookbook of healthy recipes to inspire you.

Plan your meals. On the weekend, plan your breakfasts, lunches and dinners for the upcoming week, and then head out to the grocery store, and do your shopping so you’ll have everything you need on hand.

Cook at home. When you eat out, even when opting for the “healthy” items on the menu, you could be getting hidden doses of salt, sugar and fat. When you cook at home, you can control exactly what you’re eating, down to the nutrient.

It’s healthier for your pocketbook, too.

Watch your sugar. Too much sugar leads to weight gain, abdominal obesity, low HDL and high LDL, elevated blood sugar and a whole host of other problems. But like salt, sugar can hide in foods you might think are healthy, including instant oatmeal, jarred pasta sauce, smoothies, flavored yogurt and salad dressing. A good rule of thumb: Read the label, and if it has a double-digit sugar count, ditch it.

Explore your health insurance discounts. Many health plans offer resources, discounts and incentives for leading a healthier life. Participating Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies, for example, have the Blue365 program, which features a variety of health and wellness products and services.

Meatless Mondays! Going vegetarian one day a week is a great way to get more veggies into your diet. Swap the burger for a plate of grilled or roasted veggies drizzled with balsamic vinegar or a big, colorful salad. Just don’t pack on the refined carbs like white bread, pasta or potatoes in place of the meat.

Eat the rainbow. Colorful foods are packed with nutrients. Red foods help heart health and improve memory. Orange foods are good for your

Life As A Caregiver

so I kissed her and said goodbye.

Putting our precious cargo in the caring hands of others is exactly the right I knew the day would come when I could no thing to do as Alzheimer’s patients decline. These longer care for my mom in the manner it took to professional caregivers are emotionally removed keep her comfortable. I knew it because I had from the horrible reality of the disease and can read about it over and over. I knew it because care for our loved ones efficiently and without the support group I attend spoke about it. I knew hesitation. The constant reminder of how mom is it because that is the progression of Alzheimer’s declining surrounds me mentally but not visually disease. I knew it because all the people I know whose loved ones are victims of the disease have like it did when she lived here. That is the healthy experienced it. Here is a perfect example of logic ‘break’ that people speak about when warning family members who are caregivers…the ‘break’ and intellect colliding with emotion. I knew the from the visual picture we get of our loved ones in day would come….but when it did, I just couldn’t discomfort and decline 24/7…the frustration and believe it. sadness that we feel all of the time while trying to enjoy them.

I delivered mom to her new care facility: I brought what little stuff she had from my casita, helped I continue to work on getting over the guilt and arrange her new room the way she liked, gave the powerless feeling of not being able to control her a big hug & told her I loved her with all my the situation. I am slowly getting my life back, but heart…and left. I wasn’t allowed to return for two it is a new life. Life with my mom in a care facility. weeks. The kind people at her new home said their job was to take care of her…and MY job was to enjoy her. That sounded like a good plan. I could deal with that. So when the day finally came when I could visit her, I was so excited and anxious to see her. I came through the beautiful living room and found her sitting in the family room. Her face lit up when she saw me. It was wonderful. There wasn’t too much to talk about since she doesn’t remember much of what happens during her day, but we laughed and hugged….that was all we really needed. I left after about an hour…and would return in two days.
