From Me To You...

During this quarantine phase of our lives we have been looking at the inside of our house more than we used to. I am sure this has happened to you too. After a few weeks, and a few too many home improvement shows, we decided that things could do with sprucing up.

What did we decide to change? Well the lighting was original to the house, circa 2004, so that had to go. What followed was an intense internet search and voila, a box was delivered. Actually 5 boxes. The electrician was called and in a couple of weeks we had an updated lighting package.

Next the adult daughter was moving into her own apartment so that meant furniture moving.

It also meant a free room. We rearranged some things and voila, a new office! My desk (which was actually an old dining room table) is far too big for the new office space so I am ‘making do’ with my son’s desk for the moment. Due to the onset of online school in a few weeks I will be taking a trip to Ikea so that he can have his desk for his work, and I can get one that fits my needs too.

During the move we took a close look at the walls and I thought, “You know, this house could do with a refresh. Let’s paint it!” Easy right?

Off to Lowes we went and 7 paint samples came home with us. After staring at the samples and asking the opinion of everyone we could think of, a color was chosen. But before we could paint the walls, the cabinets needed our attention. We had painted our kitchen cabinets white a few years ago and they just needed a touch up.

Our bathroom cabinets were a different story. 16 years of 4 small children pouring water on them and scribbling to their hearts content had left a mark, actually several marks. I chose a deep blue/grey for the bathrooms and having finished one bathroom I am very happy with my choice.

years. In fact it was so easy to paint that bathroom that I took my still wet brush and painted the kitchen island cabinets blue too. Beautiful!

Next on to painting the rest of the house. In the last 2 weeks we have completed the family room/kitchen, one bathroom and our office. It will be quite a project to complete the whole house especially if I keep getting side-tracked.

It reminds me of the children’s book about giving a mouse a cookie, he is going to need a glass of milk to go with it. The tale goes in a circle ending up with the mouse being thirsty and wanting a glass of milk, then he needs a cookie to go with it...

Handwashing According to the CDC, regular handwashing is one of the most effective ways people can keep from getting sick - and to help protect others from viruses such as COVID-19. But for those with eczema, hands may become irritated when washed too vigorously, dried too harshly or not moisturized properly, and potentially exacerbate or trigger a flare. That’s why it’s important to stick with a handwashing routine that will keep hands as clean - and healthy - as possible.

Dr. Nduaka, who is Dermatology Team Leader, North America Medical Affairs at Pfizer Inc., has a 10-year-old daughter with eczema. Ever since she was little, she’s been instructed to care for her hands by washing, drying and moisturizing frequently, he says. Because she’s so accustomed to the routine to care for her skin, Dr. Nduaka’s not worried about his daughter’s eczema right

now, and neither is she. “She’s doing OK,” he says.

Dr. Levenberg shared the following advice for people with eczema on how to help keep their hands clean and healthy.

Use the right kind of cleanser People with eczema or other skin conditions should consider use of a gentle cleanser, which comes in bar and liquid form, says Dr. Levenberg. He also recommends washing hands with lukewarm water, rather than hot or cold, to avoid further irritation.

Dry but don’t over-dry Drying after every handwashing is important, because, according to the CDC, germs can transfer more easily to and from wet hands than from dry. Dr. Levenberg recommends people with skin conditions gently pat their hands dry using a clean towel, disposable paper towel, or air dry if available.

Always moisturize After light drying, immediately apply a moisturizer. Dr. Levenberg recommends products such as ointment or cream, which tend to be thicker and have better moisturizing properties.

Washing your hands frequently and correctly is always important. And right now, as people try and stop the spread of COVID-19, Dr. Levenberg says keeping your hands healthy is critical for overall health.

MYTH #2: There aren’t any telehealth providers in the area.

FACT: Many trusted local and national health care systems provide telehealth services across the nation. Today, more than half of providers in the United States currently offer some form of telehealth service, according to an April 22, 2020 Merritt Hawkins survey, “Physician Practice Patterns Changing as a Result of COVID-19.”

Additionally, recent government, health system and reimbursement policy changes have improved patient access to telehealth services and are encouraging use as a safe way to access care during the pandemic.

MYTH #3: Virtual care isn’t as good as in-person care.

FACT: Telehealth services can offer highquality, convenient access to care. Much like face-to-face office visits, telehealth visits can facilitate a trusting, open dialogue with a doctor or nurse practitioner. Most providers have a web-based interface or mobile app, making it easy to log onto and use secure, quality video for consultations and to visually help communicate about injuries or conditions.

Telehealth also reduces time spent in waiting rooms and commuting to appointments, putting more power in the hands of patients. It can be particularly valuable for enabling remote monitoring and regular check-ins for patients with chronic conditions.

Telehealth is more accessible than ever as more providers evolve and adapt technologies to meet patient needs at a safe distance. But even as social distancing constrictions lift, digital wellness offerings will present greater flexibility and convenience in meeting individual health care needs.

Yum Yum Southwest Black Bean Burgers

Ingredients 1/2 red bell pepper, cut in half 1/2 small RealSweet sweet onion, cut in half 1 (15-ounce) can low-sodium black beans, drained, rinsed 1 large egg 1/2 cup breadcrumbs 1 1/2 teaspoon chili powder 1 1/2 teaspoon cumin 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon olive oil 4 hamburger buns 1 Sunset tomato on the vine, sliced 1 Mission Produce avocado, sliced

Instructions Place pepper and onion in food processor and blend until finely chopped (if there’s a lot of water after blending, strain using mesh strainer).

If you don’t have a food processor, grate or finely chop instead.

Mash beans in large bowl. Add pepper/onion, egg, breadcrumbs, chili powder, cumin and garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper to taste and mix well. Divide into 4 patties.

Heat oil in skillet over medium heat. Cook patties 6-8 minutes each side.

Top buns with burgers, tomato and avocado.

Serves 4.

Business 411 When A Recession Comes, Don’t Stop Advertising.

There have been a number of studies going back nearly one century that point out the advantages of maintaining or even increasing ad budgets during a weaker economy. Those advertisers that maintained or grew their ad spending increased sales and market share during the recession and afterwards. As a popular adage says, “When times are good you should advertise. When times are bad you must advertise.”

There are several reasons to advertise during a slowdown.

• The “noise level” in a brand’s product category can drop when competitors cut back on their ad spend.

• Brands can project to consumers the image of corporate stability during challenging times.

• Studies have shown that direct mail advertising such as community magazines, can provide greater short-term sales growth, increases during a recession.

•

When marketers cut back on their ad spending, the brand loses its “share of mind” with consumers, with the potential of losing current and future sales. An increase in “share of voice” typically leads to in an increase in “share of market.” An increase in market share results, with an increase in profits.

Another strategy used by marketers is using short-term price incentives to match the economic climate with consumers who are seeking a good deal. Another creative strategy is pointing out the value the brand provides.

Although the natural inclination for advertisers is to cut back on advertising during a recession, those brands that maintain their ad budget and/ or change their messaging can get a long-lasting boost in sales and market share.

Perhaps the best quote about advertising in a recession came from Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. When asked, “What do you think about a recession?” he responded, “I thought about it and decided not to participate.”

Don’t Get Caught by the Storm Dust Storm Safety Tips •

If dense dust is observed blowing across or approaching a roadway, pull your vehicle off the pavement as far as possible, stop, turn off lights, set the emergency brake, take your foot off of the brake pedal to be sure the tail lights are not illuminated.

Don’t enter the dust storm area if you can avoid it.

•

If you can’t pull off the roadway, proceed at a speed suitable for visibility, turn on lights and sound horn occasionally. Use the painted center line to help guide you. Look for a safe place to pull off the roadway.

Never stop on the traveled portion of the roadway.

Lights Out! •

In the past, motorists driving in dust storms have pulled off the roadway, leaving lights on. Vehicles approaching from the rear and using the advance car’s lights as a guide have inadvertently left the roadway and in some instances collided with the parked vehicle. Make sure all of your lights are off when you park off the roadway.

Eye Health

Like many Americans, you may be putting off regular health appointments like eye exams because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, your optometrist may have been closed for some time, depending on where you live. It may seem less urgent to have an eye exam if you’re not experiencing vision problems, but more than 270 serious conditions can be detected - which may affect the way you see and your overall health.

Most are asymptomatic, so an annual eye exam by a doctor of optometry is recommended to keep you healthy.

Whether you’re experiencing digital eye strain or dry eyes, or if you have health conditions such as hypertension or diabetes, comprehensive eye exams are vital. Anyone with risk factors for glaucoma such as being over age 60, having a family history of glaucoma or physical injuries to the eye should have regular appointments for eye pressure. And being checked for cataracts from age 60 can help prevent loss of sight.

Positive Parenting The Benefits of STEAM Education

The need for STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) education is critical, especially because there are over 3 million job openings in STEAM-related fields in today’s economy (https://www.teachthought. com/technology/benefits-of-steam-education/).

STEAM education allows for students to take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process.

As a result of the adoption of STEAM in classrooms across the country, new teaching methods have emerged. Working From Home The recent transition to widespread working from home has shown that the experience has been both educational and eye-opening for many. Working at home means learning to cope with distractions, space constraints, managing time with family and learning new skills. And, according to new consumer research, it has also meant reassessing what is most important.

A nationwide survey conducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of LG Electronics reveals the many ways working from home has challenged and surprised Americans. The most striking survey results show the importance of close relationships. Social distancing has caused many to reassess who is most important to them, and how much they may have taken friends and family for granted. When asked what they want to do first when the crisis is over, the top answer was to visit loved ones, followed by going out to a meal.

* 35% are learning to keep their whole household to a schedule. * 23% use visual cues to let others know when they’re working.

As one might expect, a majority of respondents admitted to making conference calls from a common area in their house. However, some said they were stuck calling from a makeshift workspace in a lesser-used part of home. Onefifth of respondents admitted to calling from a basement or attic, while others said they took work on the go. The research shows 18% have called from their cars, and perhaps most surprisingly, 12% admit taking work calls in the bathroom.

No matter what your work-from-home experience has been, chances are it’s changed your attitudes about work and family life - and how to balance the two - in ways that will stay with you long into the future.

For many people, juggling priorities and obligations was difficult even before the switch to remote working. But having to work at home has shined a brighter spotlight on how we cope and find a healthy work-life balance.
