From Me To You...

“He’s making a list and checking it twice...”

‘Tis the season for lists. Lists of gifts to buy and dishes to make, lists of holiday cards to send out, lists upon lists upon lists. Usually lists are helpful for me. They allow my mind to concentrate on whatever task is at hand without worrying about remembering the next task. In my work I make tons of lists! I have lists of ads to update, articles to write or proof, people to email, and then there is the Master List. I have a giant white board behind me in my office to keep me on track each month. It is mostly there as a checklist to make sure nothing gets missed in one of the magazines. But without that master list there would be things missing from one or more magazine that should have been there.

Then there are my mental lists of things I would like to do, things like movies I want to watch and books I want to read. I started to buy books theorizing that if I had them in front of me I would remember to read them. What actually happened is that I have a stack of books by my bed waiting to be read. The guilt is enormous.

The movie list is just a mental checklist. I see a preview and think, “Oh I would like to watch that when it comes out!” Of course by the time the movie is available I have completely forgotten about it.

I was scrolling through Netflix or Hulu, or one of the other online streaming services a couple

of days ago and I came upon the movie The Meg. This movie is an update of the Jaws movies with a giant shark that terrorizes the locals. There is the ubiquitous beach full of tourists to churn through and the boat with well intentioned researchers to upend and eat. My favorite part was when they had finally caught and killed the monster after a terrifying chase scene. They were basking in that post victory glow and one of the scientists noticed that the bite of this shark did not seem to be big enough for the prints it had left on their underwater research facility. Dum dum duuuum!!!! A new and even bigger shark leapt over their boat, eating several people and a chunk of the dead shark.

Classic.

As much as I enjoyed the movie I have to admit it was truly terrible. Just awful. From the acting, to the plot, to the enhanced computer graphics.

Nothing was ever going to be award winning.

And yet I enjoyed the heck out of it. Partly because I love kitschy movies like that but mostly because it meant I could check it off my movie list. Finally I can get to the next thing on my list.

What is that you ask? Well I am going to pop some popcorn and cozy up with another wild ride, The Crown. Sure it may not have as much blood but it is just as vicious in its own way.

Prosciutto-Wrapped Shrimp with Smoked Paprika These are lavish-looking appetizers suitable for any party or get-together with your family.

Prep time 15 minutes; Cook time 6 minutes; Total time 21 minutes Ingredients 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1 and 1/2 teaspoons smoked paprika 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 pound jumbo shrimp (16/20 pound), shelled and deveined with tails left on 4 ounces very thinly sliced prosciutto sliced lengthwise into 1/2-inch strips

Instructions Preheat broiler and place cooking rack about 4 inches below heat source.

Spray rimmed baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray, or line with parchment paper.

In a small bowl, combine olive oil, paprika, and pepper. Add shrimp and toss until coated with the seasoned olive oil.

Wrap each shrimp with a strip of prosciutto, spiraling it up the shrimp until the shrimp is encased. Place shrimp on the prepared baking sheet.

Broil for 3 minutes until the tops are crispy, then turn and broil for another 3 minutes until the other side is browned.

Serve with little napkins, with the crispier side up.

Acts Of Giving “Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus.

Finally, there was only one other family between us and the ticket counter. This family made a big impression on me.

There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12.

The way they were dressed, you could tell they didn’t have a lot of money, but their clothes were neat and clean.

The children were wellbehaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly jabbering about the clowns, animals, and all the acts they would be seeing that night. By their excitement you could sense they had never been to the circus before. It would be a highlight of their lives.

The father and mother were at the head of the pack standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You’re my knight in shining armor.” He was smiling and enjoying seeing his family happy.

The ticket lady asked the man how many tickets he wanted? He proudly responded, “I’d like to buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets, so I can take my family to the circus.”

The ticket lady stated the price.

The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, the man’s lip began to quiver. Then he leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?” The ticket lady again stated the price.

The man didn’t have enough money. How was 12

he supposed to turn and tell his eight kids that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?

Seeing what was going on, my dad reached into his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill, and then dropped it on the ground. (We were not wealthy in any sense of the word!) My father bent down, picked up the $20 bill, tapped the man on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket.”

The man understood what was going on. He wasn’t begging for a handout but certainly appreciated the help in a desperate, heartbreaking and embarrassing situation.

He looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand in both of his, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lip quivering and a tear streaming down his cheek, he replied; “Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”

My father and I went back to our car and drove home. The $20 that my dad gave away is what we were going to buy our own tickets with.

Although we didn’t get to see the circus that night, we both felt a joy inside us that was far greater than seeing the circus could ever provide.

That day I learnt the value to Give.
