you do?” In this show people are tested in fabricated situations to see their reaction when they think no-one is watching. Many of these situations involve stepping up when people are being harassed or bullied and yes, we should all put a stop to that kind of behavior. My issue with this is that nowadays it can be dangerous to react in the way you would want to. I have told my daughters, in particular, not to intervene if their safety could be at risk. But it should not be that way. People should always do the right thing, even if they don’t get kudos or acknowledgement. People should also not harass or bully others too, let’s be honest here.
I don’t mean inside the store, although I will judge you harshly if you allow your child to ram it into my ankles. Nope, I mean outside the store, in the parking lot. Once you get all your chocolate chip muffins, cheese balls and lactose free milk into the car and you have an empty cart, what do you do? Do you leave it where it lands? Do you push it onto a curb so it doesn’t roll away? Do you put it carefully between the parked cars next to you? Or do you take it to the cart stand, ready to be rolled back to the store?
TV show I am sure many of you have seen or at least heard of called “What would
In my opinion the measure of a man (or woman) can be taken by observing what they do with a shopping cart.
This brings me back to the cart situation. Do the right thing, people. Even if no-one is watching you.

1. Make the kitchen into a screen-free zone
3. Encourage inventiveness in the kitchen
Below are a few tips to help encourage your tween to think and act creatively this school year.
open-minded thoughts, free of distraction.
6 Estrella Publishing - The Hamlet magazine September 2022
Tween years are typically when children become more curious and comfortable trying new things. Take advantage of this curiosity by trying new flavors and finding favorites together.
4. Give them a ‘yes day’
6. Create challenges that get them thinking Fuel their creativity by putting them up to unexpected challenges with a time limit: Create a unique creature out of folding a piece of paper, see who can get through a scooter course the fastest.
An upgrade to their room’s style may be in order as they transition from more adolescent colors and interests into more mature preferences.
Let them dictate the style and work together to paint, curate and organize. With these tips, you’re providing your child opportunities to explore and learn more about themselves with you as their guide through the challenges of building a strong self-identity in the tween years. Good luck!
Let them sign up for an activity they’ve not yet tried, just to give it a shot. Encouraging independent thinking in small ways helps build confidence and allows space for creative thinking.
2. Be their confidence coach
Tweenagers
7. Let them take a few risks
Every parent knows their kids’ first stop as soon as they get home from school will be the kitchen. Make yours a screen-free zone. That way, when your kids grab a snack, there’s greater room for
A water balloon fight, a trip to a theme park, a concert that starts at 10 p.m. - it’s all fair game and can help open their world to new possibilities for their future.
Normalize mistakes and help them to overcome the fear of failure by instilling confidencebuilding mantras like “you can do hard things” into your everyday language.
8. Give their room a decor update
5. Let them answer first If a problem arises that affects both of you, give your child the chance to weigh in first with a solution. Got turned around on a hike? Let them think through the best way out. Rip in their jeans? Let them brainstorm fixes or research how to sew them.
The tween years can be incredibly tough to navigate. Between trying to figure out their passions, building friendships and keeping up with the demands of school, many selfdiscoveries happen. Help your tween explore their creative pursuits by giving them outlets and the support to try, fail, learn and discover.
Being purposeful about integrating moments of creativity can help your tween discover what gets them excited, even in the little pockets of time you have with them.

As we discussed last month, controlling inflammation is key to overall health. There are lots of natural options for decreasing inflammation. Naturopaths and functional medicine providers are generally well-versed in natural remedies, so you may wish to consult with one for more information. In addition, nutritionists are good sources of information regarding anti-inflammatory foods and dietary programs to decrease inflammation, as well as making you aware of things about your intake that could be working against you in some way. Furthermore, acupuncturists are masters of decreasing inflammation all over the body. Here are some ideas for things you can research and ask your provider about that can help with inflammation. Do your own deep dive and consult your medical provider before trying ANY of these:

Both research and the experience of educators confirms that excessive screen time hinders a child’s development. Screens can be enjoyed in moderation, but they should be monitored and guarded carefully. Instead, one of the best things a child can do is play outside and dig in the dirt! Allow your children to experience “boredom” from time to time, as they will discover that an afternoon of joy can be derived from nothing but a stick and a pinecone, or a few crayons and a stack of paper.
School is back in session! This time of year is exciting, but it can be daunting to adjust to new rhythms and routines. I encourage parents, especially those new to the school setting, to consider a few simple practices to ground you and your children during the exhilaration and anxiety of the new school year.
Limit screen time and encourage active play
Tips for New School Parents
The greatest influence on the heart of a child is the heart of a parent. Personal commitment to a life of virtue, and the humility to admit our failing and mistakes, is essential to a child’s moral formation. The ultimate way your little ones learn is through what they see at home. In the end, parents are truly the primary educators of their children. The partnership between parents and teachers is essential, but nothing replaces your role as a parent. Take comfort in knowing that you are still the greatest influence upon your child, and that it is the simple things that make all the difference.

Read with your children Immerse yourself in beautiful stories together! Nurturing your child’s love of books and reading is the cornerstone of a true education. Give special emphasis to tales that have stood the test of time, such as Charlotte’s Web or classic fairy tales. A child is never too old for this sacred bedtime routine, and they will never forget it.

For most, the sadness will diminish over time, but taking the time to grieve is an essential part of the process. We are naturally resilient, and most of us can cope with a loss and can, over time, move on with our lives. But everyone reacts differently to death. Research shows that most people recover from loss on their own with time, especially if they have a strong support system. It is important to remember that there is no “normal” amount of time for someone to grieve.

For many years, licensed counselors and other mental health professionals believed that processing grief was a predicable process for people. That once you were through the grieving process, you had reached closure and could move on. Experts now understand that each person processes grief differently and coping with grief does not follow a particular pattern. As a licensed professional counselor, I work with individuals experiencing loss. What follows are some strategies that I have found helpful when coping with the loss of a loved one: Talk about the death of your loved one with friends and other members of the family. The calendar says fall starts in September, but Arizona’s cooler season will wait awhile. One thing that won’t wait are the measures to reduce your risk of injury due to falling hazards. Falls are a leading cause of injury for people age 65 and older, according to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), but they are not an inevitable part of aging. Doctors from Abrazo Health want the public to know there are things you can do around the house to help prevent falls. “If fall injuries aren’t something that you’ve thought about, there is probably someone in your life who’s worried about it,” said Dr. Jason Black, medical director of Emergency Services at Abrazo West Campus. Most falls are caused by a combination of risk factors. The more risk factors a person has, the greater their chances of falling.
“It’s important to know that falls can happen just about any time. Take a few steps now to help avoid hazards at home, and recognize other potential risks that can help prevent fall injuries,” said Dr. SubmittedBlack.by Keith Jones of Abrazo West.
· Have a seat: Place a sturdy chair in your bedroom so you can sit while getting dressed.
“First talk with your doctor. You may need to have your vision as well as your balance and movement checked. Your prescription medications may need to be changed. Many people can reduce their risk of falls by exercising, improving their balance and implementing safety measures at home,” he said.
· Store for success: Keep frequently used items between your waist and shoulder height.

· Secure some support: Buy a shower seat, grab bar, and adjustable-height handheld shower head to make bathing easier and safer.
Light it up: Replace burnt-out bulbs with bright, non-glare lightbulbs.
·
“Aging brings many physical changes including slowed reaction times and a decreased sense of balance. Many medications, including diuretics, sedatives and high blood pressure medications can alter your sense of balance,” explained Dr. Black. While the risk of falling increases with age, one can take measures to help prevent falls.
Fall Risks
· Clear the way: Keep items off the stairs, and fix simple but serious hazards such as clutter and throw rugs.
As we age, our risk of falling and being injured increase. After age 65, your risk of falling is about one in four. These falls may result in broken bones or other injuries that lead to declining health, isolation and a loss of independence, said Dr. Black. Falls are also the most common cause of traumatic brain injury.
The NCOA offers five home modifications you can make for fall prevention:
