From Me To You...

I am no longer allowed to throw balls in the house. Apparently my family is tired of dodging random missiles, picking up broken items and occasionally getting winged themselves. In fact as soon as I reach for a dog toy people duck for cover. I find it a little insulting to be honest.

My aim is not that bad, most of the damage is caused by rebounds and people walking into the line of fire. That is the line I am going with anyway.

It is amazing how many things I aim for in life and get a near miss, but it is not about the ones you miss. As I try to instill in my children, you learn more from failing than success. Sure success is more fun, but failing builds resilience, tenacity and drive. Learning that lesson young is preferable as it can be a hard lesson to learn as an adult.

he went to high school and hit a wall. He stopped loving math and took a couple of years to come back to it. But he did, and pretty spectacularly at that, completing his college math before even starting his finance degree. He fell, figured out that if you fail at something you learn, pick yourself up and do it differently next time - and he learned it when he was young. That is a skill which makes him able to roll with the punches in his adult life.

Many people never learn that lesson, repeating their mistakes over and over again.

Relaxation Techniques

Moms have to-do lists that are never done. From getting the kids to school, prepping family meals and everything in between, it’s a 24/7 job and can be hard to find a moment to stop and take a breath of fresh air. While the home should be a sanctuary to relax and de-stress, the reality is that a lot of life’s biggest activities happen there.

The good news is that it only takes a few minutes to ground yourself through meditation. In fact, recent studies by the National Institutes of Health indicate that meditation can improve relaxation, lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety.

Learning a few easy meditation techniques will give you the ability to power through even the toughest days.

Unplug for just 5 minutes One of the biggest culprits of stress today is technology. When you’re at home, set your phone on airplane mode, turn off the radio or TV, close the laptop - and just shut your eyes.

Breathe deeply, in through the nose and out through the mouth, at least five times. Repeat a word or phrase in your mind like “Relax,” “Calm” or “Breathe in, breathe out.” When you’re ready, slowly re-acclimate to your surroundings and gently get back to your busy day.

The one-minute breath For just a minute, commit to practicing this breathing technique to quiet your mind and restore energy.

Change Is Good As a parent, it’s so exciting to see your children grow and develop their own unique personalities and interests. While children are young and exploring the world around them, parents are always looking for ways to encourage their children’s growth, and to support them in finding activities that inspire kids and help them express their individual differences.

What are the most positive ways to influence kids? By letting them be themselves and cheering them on, all the way.

1. Let kids choose their activities These days the choices for classes and activities can be overwhelming, so pick a reasonable number of choices for your children, but make sure they represent a variety of interests, from the arts, science and math, sports and more and let them choose what interests them the most. Then allow your children to sample from the pursuits that interest them, and see what sticks.

Kids love to make a difference, and you can support their efforts as well as acting as a role model by making a difference, too.

Encouraging your kids to be kind, be confident and most importantly, to be themselves can be the most rewarding part of parenting.

2. Encourage kids to follow their interests wherever they go Once your kids express an interest in something, encourage the pursuit, even if it’s something you didn’t expect. Emojis Vs Road Signs

If you were to take a quiz to test your ability to identify common emojis and road signs, how do you think you’d fare?

According to the results from a recent survey by Mercury Insurance, 1,890 respondents did not do so well. The meaning of the “yawning” emoji was correctly identified by 85% of the respondents, but only 31% of quiz-takers correctly identified the meaning of the “lane reduction” road sign.

Additionally, 71% knew the “in love” emoji, but the “keep right” road sign was correctly identified by only 51% of quiz-takers.

School Anxiety Managing back-to-school anxiety.

“Parents should pay close attention to their children as summer winds down,” says Amy Edgar, APRN, CRNP, FNP-C, founder of the Children’s Integrated Center for Success (CICS), a multidisciplinary treatment center in Allentown, Pennsylvania. “Behavior changes and other indicators of stress are possible clues of their child’s school-related anxiety.”

While anxiety coinciding with the school year is normal for children, parents should look for warning signs that their child may be struggling beyond what is typical. “There is a very common pattern and feature to the behavior of children who are under stress as it relates to school,” says Edgar.

Managing Meds As we get older, the ones we love inevitably age too. For many, there comes a time where you are no longer just a son, daughter or family member - you’re a caregiver. Ensuring your aging parent or loved one is able to manage and afford their medical treatments can have an enormous impact on their health and quality of life. Dan Klein, president and CEO of the Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation, the largest independent charitable organization dedicated to helping people pay their out-of-pocket costs for prescribed treatments, offers five simple ways you can help an aging family member manage their treatment - so you can both live healthier and happier lives.

1. Meet with their doctor or healthcare provider.

Building a relationship with their healthcare provider will help lay the groundwork for future communication and care management. Before attending an appointment, talk to your parent or family member about their needs and concerns, make a list of the medications they are taking and the renewals they may need and determine together what you’d like to accomplish. If drug costs are a financial burden, don’t be shy about asking for samples or if there are less expensive generic equivalents available.

2. Check in with the pharmacist.

Online tools, like The National Council on Aging’s Benefits Checkup Tool and Medicare Interactive sponsored by the Medicare Rights Center can help you review benefits and find the best option for them. They may also be eligible for other Medicare programs - like a Low-Income Subsidy - that can lower out-of-pocket costs.

5. Find out if charitable financial assistance is available. The PAN Foundation is one of several charities that provides financial assistance for out-of-pocket costs. You can learn more about patient assistance charities at panfoundation.org.

The Purple Leash An estimated 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience some form of domestic abuse in their lifetime. Escaping abusive situations and starting over in a new and safe environment is an overwhelming experience for victims, especially when pets are involved. An added challenge is that very few domestic violence shelters in the U.S. currently accept and house pets. This leaves abuse victims with a difficult decision - flee to safety but leave their pet behind or stay with their abuser? Almost half of domestic violence victims choose to stay in an abusive situation out of fear of what might happen to their pet.

As those who live with pets can attest, pets do so much for their humans - they provide unconditional love and comfort, they demonstrate loyalty and devotion, and they teach people about care and compassion. In essence, pets and people are better together.

That’s why Purina has partnered with RedRover, a national nonprofit organization that helps people and animals in crisis situations, to create the

Purple Leash Project. The Purple Leash Project not only raises awareness about this issue, but the program also helps provide funding and resources necessary to help more domestic violence shelters become safe, healing spaces for pets and people.

As part of the initiative, Purina is committing more than $500,000 to establish Purple Leash Project grants, which are awarded in partnership with RedRover to shelters across the country to fund renovations to make their shelter spaces pet-friendly. The Purple Leash Project aims to increase the number of pet-friendly domestic abuse shelters across the U.S. to ensure there are more resources available for survivors with pets in every state. Me Vs We

When did WE become ME? Think about it. I did as I was sitting at coffee listening to people discuss times gone by. It is a daily ritual when a group of us get together drinking a $3.00 cup of coffee that at one time sold for 5cents.

Looking back to the 1940’s, in particular, 1941, it was one of the darkest time in the history of our country. World War II was a defining moment in our history and of the world. Those who lived through this nightmare can remember the sacrifices and the solidarity demonstrated by our fellow citizens.

I remember the rallies to encourage our men and emphasize how proud we were that the finest among us would ensure the finest lives for all of us. The Hollywood stars of the day opened their hearts and purses to symbolize the unity of purpose. The Hollywood Canteen and the USO allowed our soldiers, sailors, and airmen the opportunity to take a bit of home with them wherever they were sent.

Can we again learn the value of pride? Is it possible to witness a return to civility? Justice should be administered with mercy.

Try thinking of WE as we do when we pray. Because it is through prayer and the understanding of gratitude, that ME will be turned back into WE. Perhaps then we will see an even greater America. This will not be because we proclaim it, but rather because we act it.

The newsreels gave us an inside look into the horror of war. The newspapers listed the dead. Windows in our homes were draped with banners decorated with stars, one for those serving, and another for those who lost their lives.

Patriotism is a word relegated to history, as is our fervor for justice and mercy. The WE demonstrated by a generation who understood the value of collective responsibility and pride has now become ME. Sleep Well

Whether you prefer stomach, back, side or curled into a fetal position, the way you snuggle into the pillow may affect your breathing patterns, neck and back pain, and circulation. A lessserious effect, but one most people would probably like to avoid, is an increase in facial wrinkles.

Here are some of the pros and cons of go-to nightly postures, according to the National Sleep Foundation.

1) Back: Lying on your back and assuming a neutral body position typically results in the least amount of strain on your head, neck and spine.

But studies show links between back sleepers and snoring, so if this is something you are prone to, try flipping to your side. Also, sleeping on your back is not a good choice if you have sleep apnea, because your tongue can fall back, narrowing the airway.

2) Side: Side-sleeping, which is the most common position for adults, helps to open our airways to allow for steady airflow to the lungs.

Researchers have found resting on the side may boost brain health, at least when monitoring the sleeping patterns of laboratory animals, but a separate study showed the potential for increased wrinkles in side-sleepers.

3) Fetal position: The fetal position helps improve circulation and is a good bet for people who tend to snore. Be sure not to curl too tightly as you drift off, however, as it may cause difficulty breathing.

4) Stomach: Sleeping on your stomach may make breathing regularly a challenge because airway passages could be compromised. Others may experience neck pain or tingling in joints and muscles due to poor circulation, which is a common challenge for people with diabetes. To help avoid putting pressure on the spine, tuck a pillow under your pelvis to keep a neutral lumbar position. One other negative: Enhanced wrinkles may be a side effect of stomach slumber.

While changing your default sleeping position is no easy task, you can help the process by supporting your head and legs with pillows designed for your ideal position.

“Regardless of your go-to sleep position, getting adequate rest is important to all aspects of your health,” said Dr. James Metcalf, a medical director with UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement. “Hours of slumber enable our bodies and minds to recharge. Talk with your doctor if you’re having trouble getting a good night’s sleep.”

Be Yourself, Kids As a parent, it’s so exciting to see your children grow and develop their own unique personalities and interests. What are the most positive ways to influence kids? By letting them be themselves and cheering them on, all the way.

1. Let kids choose their activities These days the choices for classes and activities can be overwhelming, so pick a reasonable number of choices for your children, but make sure they represent a variety of interests, from the arts, science and math, sports and more and let them choose what interests them the most. Then allow your children to sample from the pursuits that interest them, and see what sticks.

2. Encourage kids to follow their interests wherever they go

Once your kids express an interest in something, encourage the pursuit, even if it’s something you didn’t expect. So how can you help them? Encourage their curiosity.

Learn about the topic yourself, so you can help your children explore it further.

3. Allow kids to pick their own clothing styles There’s no better way to help children express their own personal style than allowing them choices about what they wear. Within an acceptable budget go to your favorite store and let your children choose some of their clothing, within guidelines you set ahead of time.

4. Support kids in their efforts to help others The internet is full of stories about kids who love to help others, from a lemonade stand raising funds for a good cause to kids doing good deeds to help out a neighbor or friend. Kids love to make a difference, and you can support their efforts as well as acting as a role model by making a difference, too.

The ABCs of life: how social-emotional development in early childhood is key to success later

Parents who foster positive, nurturing relationships with their baby, toddler or preschooler will help the healthy development of their child’s social-emotional skills that will serve the child later in life.

Important social and behavioral skills, such as motivation, self-discipline, focus and self-esteem begin to take root from birth to age 5.

“Families lay the foundation for babies, toddlers and preschoolers to be able to learn how to process the world around them,” said Kelly Lubeck, program manager for the family support and literacy team at First Things First. “Helping children learn skills that allow them to express how they feel, have empathy for others and work through conflict will serve them for their entire lifetime.”

FTF encourages families to establish a nurturing environment during every stage of their young child’s life. For babies, start by making them

feel safe and loved. This helps them develop the capacity to form a strong social-emotional foundation. Parents can talk, read and sing with their baby and maintain a consistent routine, so the baby knows what to expect throughout the day.

Supporting toddlers in developing emotional skills begins with allowing children to express their feelings. Say things like, “You look sad. Let’s see if we can make you feel better.” This lets your child know that you are paying attention to their needs and want to be there for them.

For preschoolers, parents can encourage the child to draw a picture of what happened to make them upset and describe what they were thinking and feeling at each stage.

According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children, research shows that children with higher emotional intelligence are better able to pay attention, are more engaged in school and are more empathic.
