From Me To You...

As a child summertime was full of endless possibilities. Playing with friends, reading, going on long family walks, visiting relatives, vacationing, sleeping in, and just relaxing. As a parent it seems to be full of finding things to do with the kids. Summer camps, activities, swimming, travel, more swimming, organizing school supplies for next year, day trips, museums, and more swimming. Also in Arizona the importance of staying cool either at home or anytime we have to leave the house is at the top of the list - hence all the swimming.

This year my summer is being dubbed “The Summer of Moving Out” and with 3 kids going on to college or the start of their own independent lives, we have a busy time ahead.

As I write this I am in Tennessee with one kid (ahem adult), buying furniture and helping her set up her life here. There are so many things to help her organize that it sometimes makes my head spin, I really think moving from state to state is more complicated than moving to America here from abroad.

Once this one is settled, it is on to the next location for a college drop off. I am looking forward to that one because of the weather.

Summer in Washington state sounds a heck of a lot better than braving the Arizona heat. I can go for walks outside without applying factor 70 sunscreen, I will have to apply bug repellent though, so there is a trade off.

After that we go to Hawaii. I know these kids have made some interesting choices... but who am I to argue with a week spent floating down a lazy river or touring a volcano?

Although this summer is packed with exciting trips and activities, what I am really looking forward to is the fall. I can read, sleep in, go for long walks and reconnect with friends and family.

As I think about it, it is beginning to sound a lot like the summers of my childhood, but thankfully without the specter of a new school term ahead of me!

International Relief

The results are in! The United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI) and the USAID Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance have announced the 2022 winners of the “Cash is Best” Public Service Announcements for International Disasters (PSAid) contest. The annual contest encourages college students from across the country to create public service announcements on why monetary donations are the best way to help affected communities after international disasters. Of 107 submissions from 13 universities, 13 winners were chosen.

All of this year’s winners were from Arizona State University.

When disaster strikes, many people are moved to help, even if they or people they know aren’t directly affected. However, most people don’t realize that not all donations actually help,

and some may even hinder the relief effort.

Unsolicited material donations, like food, water and clothing, are well-meaning but are not always appropriate or necessary, depending on the situation on the ground. In addition, shipping material goods overseas can be expensive, and the goods then require sorting and storage by those providing disaster relief efforts, which can slow down efforts and divert staff and resources.

On the other hand, monetary donations like cash, credit card or online direct donations are fast and flexible. Aid groups on the ground can use the cash to buy exactly what they need, when they need it, which is important as the needs on the ground are constantly changing after a disaster. Cash is best isn’t just a tagline.

It is the most economical, efficient and effective way to support aid groups working on the ground.

When disaster strikes, monetary donations allow humanitarian organizations to directly purchase what is needed when it’s needed. Cash donations also: * Avoid transportation delays, shipping and administrative costs * Enable relief groups to quickly purchase food and safe drinking water locally for those in need * Boost local economies by allowing what is needed to be purchased locally * Allow for flexibility to respond to changing needs * Can require less energy and generate fewer carbon emissions by purchasing items locally “This message could not be more critical as the world’s eyes continue to watch the tragedy in Ukraine,” said Sarah Charles, Assistant to the Administrator of USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance. “I was recently at the Polish border where I saw well-meaning donations piling up and heard directly from aid workers who asked USAID to reiterate the message that cash is best.”

Let Go Of The Past

Letting go of things you’ve done or things that have been done to you in the past can be difficult. Like forgiveness, letting go means releasing yourself from emotional pain you live in by holding on to what happened. You’re not condoning what was done or giving anyone a pass; you’re simply deciding that you don’t want to live in that place of hurt anymore.

Letting go involves four components: 1. Change your self-talk. There’s no sense hanging on to something you can’t change.

Come up with a phrase to say whenever a memory of the past is triggered, such as “let go”, “stay in the present” or “I am not my past.”

2. Focus on what you can control by working on mindfulness, or staying in the moment and enjoying what’s in front of you. Don’t judge the past by saying you failed at something so you shouldn’t try again. Don’t make assumptions about the future by saying you’ll fail because you’re not capable, smart enough, etc. Don’t let preconceived notions get in your way. Instead, handle each situation in the now.

Not all situations have obvious lessons and some may not have a discernible lesson at all.

It’s always worth seeking, though. Sometimes, the lesson is in what you learned about yourself.

Life is too short to hold onto pain. Ending your self-inflicted suffering is within your control. Free yourself from your emotional chains by letting go of what’s holding you back. Be patient with yourself. You are reprogramming your brain, and this takes time and lots of practice.

Getting outside isn’t just good for your kids’ mental and physical health - it’s an excellent way for families to bond and create memories together. Not sure where to start? Cool It! As the summer cooling season gets underway, there are several practical and low-tech steps that homeowners can take to help improve the comfort of their indoor environment. Following are five tips that can help homeowners stay cool, get more value from their home’s cooling dollars and care for their home’s air. * Consider the heat source. Yum Yum Musings from a Desert Mermaid

Before moving to Scottsdale almost 10 years ago (and then Victory at Verrado in 2020!), I enjoyed living on Cape Cod and operating a quirky gourmet food shop called Mermaids Pantry.

2 small Zucchini, diced (or combo of green & yellow summer squash) 1 lb Butternut Squash, cubed ½ C Red Bell Pepper, diced ½ C Currants ½ C Dried Cranberries OR Pomegranate Arils ½ Red Onion, diced ¼ C Italian Parsley, rough chop

Dressing: 1/3 C White Balsamic Vinegar 2/3 C Olive Oil Whether you find yourself by a beach or here 2 tsp Honey in the desert, summer means turning off the 2 T Pomegranate Juice oven and exploring refreshing, cool recipes!

1 tsp Dijon Mustard One of my more versatile and popular salads is Pomegranate Couscous, bursting with vegetables 1 tsp Kosher Salt ½ tsp Black Pepper and a sweet bite of honey vinaigrette. It works great as side to grilled meat and seafood or as a main dish with the addition of a few slices of goat Pour boiling water over couscous and olive oil.

Allow to bloom, approx 30 minutes. Allow to cheese over baby greens. If you can’t find the cool. Toss butternut squash with 1 T olive oil, add larger pearl couscous in your local supermarket, it can be easily ordered through Amazon ~ Geten salt & pepper to taste. Saute over med-high heat until beginning to brown; turn off heat and cover.

Burden Of Debt One of the biggest factors impacting mental health is the burden of debt. The Hidden Cost of Debt survey by National Debt Relief revealed that 70% of people believe that debt makes them feel like a black cloud hangs over them, in addition to one-in-three people reporting debt has led to an increase in anxiety and stress.

What’s more, 69% of people said being in debt has made them withdraw from the things they love.

“It’s time to break the stigma and normalize having conversations about debt and its toll on mental health,” said Dr. Regine Muradian Psy.D. and National Debt Relief Financial Wellness Board Member. “Feeling isolated and alone is common for people facing financial problems, despite it being an experience shared by many Americans. People lose sleep, detach from friendships and feel hopeless.”
