From Me To You...

With the rise in services like Netflix and Hulu, it is easier to catch your favorite show and watch at your leisure than ever before. This has also led to the phenomenon of binge watching - sitting through a season or series at a time. In reality I have been doing my own form of binge watching for years, turning on House Hunters or Friends every night.

remembered it. The sheer number of disasters also became somewhat comical when viewed that way. I mean, how many horrible things happened to that cast and the poor patients they treated? Subway pole pinning two strangers together, a man attacked by his girlfriend’s lion, near drownings, plane crashes, car crashes, it makes you think twice about visiting Seattle.

There are advantages to screening shows this way. You can fully immerse yourself in the story and follow complicated plot lines more easily. If you are watching a show you have seen before then multitasking comes into play. For example as I write this I am streaming The Big Bang Theory in the background. Bazinga!

Shows like Grace & Frankie and Santa Clarita Diet are released all at once. You can see the whole thing as quickly or slowly as you want. It makes the gaps between seasons harder to wait for but I guess you can’t have everything.

Something that occurred to me is that the way shows are written will have to evolve as we turn more to binge watching. I was watching Grey’s Anatomy and when I saw it originally the plot lines made sense. However, once I started watching one episode after another, the stories seemed to speed up. Relationships blossomed, evolved and ended in a matter of hours, not weeks as I

I have also come to realise that the significance of the show you pick has increased in importance. If you dip in and out of a show once a week for half an hour or an hour it is not too much of an investment of your time. Now with binge watching, there better be something that makes one series worth the days or weeks you will be spending together. Something light and silly or a drama that pulls you in perhaps. Maybe a historical romance, you know so you can learn something while you fritter away all those hours.

I was planning on starting Game of Thrones next week but with all the backlash over the last couple of episodes I am rethinking that choice.

On Our Cover MILLENNIUM DECA COMPETES AT INTERNATIONALS

On April 27th the Millennium High School DECA club traveled to Orlando, FL to compete at DECA’s International Career Development Conference where 20,000 students from around the world come to compete and learn leadership skills. DECA is a business and marketing club that prepares emerging leaders for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

Millennium took 16 students to Orlando where they competed in various events. Students spent 5 days in Orlando where they had the opportunity to explore the Disney and Universal parks, run a 5k, network, and meet students from around the country. Millennium DECA competed hard and two students Sheil Patel and Ji Seok Lee placed in the TOP 20 in their

event Sports and Entertainment team Decision Making. In addition, Connor Yungner attended as Millenniums SECOND state officer. These students will never forget this trip and several of them are planning to use the skills they learned to bring even more members to ICDC next year in Nashville, TN.

Money Matters Building or repairing your credit doesn’t happen overnight, it takes time. Secured cards can help establish credit for the first time and can even help you repair credit if needed. Secured cards are funded by the cardholder. So instead of a bank or credit union extending you a line of credit, you front a deposit that’s then used as your credit line. However, not all secured cards are created equally.

Here’s what you should be looking for in a secured credit card: 1. A credit limit that feels right.

Secured cards require a security deposit from the applicant, usually from $200 to $500.

“Let’s say you put down a $500 deposit. If approved, the issuer will then extend a $500 credit line,” said Justin Zeidman, manager of credit card products at Navy Federal Credit Union. Borrowing against your own money may seem pointless, but the reward for good behavior is priceless.

2. Avoid being bogged down by fees.

The last thing anyone should have to worry about while trying to build or repair credit is a fee. Avoid secured cards that charge annual fees or foreign transaction fees.

3. A credit monitoring tool.

Look for a card that provides you with free access to your FICO score so that you can track your progress as you use your secured card responsibly.

4. Ability to earn rewards.

Rewards aren’t a guarantee with secured cards, but some financial institutions offer rewards opportunities for secured card holders.

5. A chance to upgrade.

A secured card is a great introduction to building credit, but eventually, you’ll be ready for something a little more advanced. Some issuers will automatically upgrade you from a secured card to a non-secured card if you continue to practice strong financial habits.

Secured cards often act as a stepping stone into the world of credit cards, but they come in all shapes and sizes. Do some research and find a card that fits your needs.

Chicken & Grape Salad Greek Chicken and Grape Salad with Lemon Tahini Dressing Serves 4 Ingredients 1/4 cup tahini 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 1/4 cup water 1 clove of garlic 1 teaspoon honey 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, divided 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, pounded to uniform thickness 1 tablespoon olive oil Coarse ground pepper to tast 1/3 English cucumber, trimmed, quartered and cut into 1/2-inch pieces (about 1 cup) 1 1/3 cups halved red California grapes 1/2 cup chopped scallions, green part only 2 ounces feta cheese, crumbled 3/4 cup chickpeas, rinsed and drained 1 cup hummus 16 romaine heart leaves 1 large whole wheat pita round, quartered

Directions In a blender, combine tahini, lemon juice, lemon zest, vinegar, water, garlic, honey and 1/4 teaspoon of salt; puree and set aside.

Heat grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.

Season the chicken with olive oil, remaining salt, and pepper. Place chicken on grill and cook, without flipping, for 4-5 minutes on the first side.

Flip and then cook for another 4 minutes on the second side. Allow the chicken to rest for 3-4 minutes, then slice.

In a medium bowl, combine the cucumber, grapes, scallions, feta and chickpeas; add 1/3 cup salad dressing and toss to combine.

To serve: Portion 1/4 cup hummus on four separate serving plates and place four romaine leaves in the hummus. Top with the cucumbergrape salad mixture and sliced chicken and serve with a triangle of pita bread.

Sunscreen Myths Not everything you hear about sun care is true: there are a number of dangerous sunscreen misconceptions out there that can lead to potential issues for the skin down the road.

Board-certified dermatologist and Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology at the New York University Langone Medical Center, Dr. Elizabeth Hale, who has partnered with Coppertone, debunks common sunscreen myths:

Myth #4: Sunscreen does not expire Truth: The active ingredients in most SPF products tend to break down after about three years, and even faster when exposed to high temperatures and direct sunlight, making the ingredients less effective in protecting you from sun damage. Not all sunscreen products come with an expiration date, so try to keep in mind when the product was purchased, be on the lookout for signs of deterioration.

Myth #1: All sunscreens are created equal Truth: To best protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays, look for the words “broad spectrum” when choosing a sunscreen, which means the product protects from both forms of UV radiation. Opt for a product with a minimum SPF 30, which can help protect you from approximately 97 percent of the sun’s damaging rays, and look for a product that is waterresistant.

Myth #2: Individuals with darker complexions don’t need sunscreen Truth: Having a darker complexion means more melanin is present in the skin, but this only works to diffuse UV light to a certain extent and doesn’t protect from skin cancer and sun-induced hyperpigmentation. The sun can cause damage to anyone’s skin, regardless of their complexion, which is why sunscreen is necessary for people of all skin tones and ethnicities.

Myth #3: Cosmetics have enough SPF to keep you protected Truth: A new wave of makeup products containing built-in SPF are taking over the market, but just because you use these products does not mean you should skip sunscreen for the day.

Foundations, powders and other beauty products generally don’t provide adequate protection, so consider them just added insurance. To be safe, be sure to apply actual sunscreen before or after your makeup and reapply throughout the day.

Myth #5: A base tan will prevent sun damage Truth: To prevent further skin damage our bodies naturally build up melanin, which is what makes us look tanner, but this natural protection is nothing compared to the defense provided by sunscreen. Any form of skin tanning is a sign of sun damage.

Myth #6: If a sunscreen says, “water resistant,” I don’t need to reapply after swimming Truth: Some performance sunscreens will say “water resistant” on the bottle, which is great.

However, even these water-resistant sunscreens need to be reapplied after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, and immediately after towel drying.

Having a basic understanding of sun protection and knowing the truth behind common misconceptions is key in safeguarding your skin and reducing your chances of premature skin aging and skin cancer.

Sprinkler Safety Every home needs working smoke alarms and an escape plan for exiting the house. These are essential first steps, but there is an additional tool that dramatically reduces the spread of home fires, and the risk of dying from one: installing home fire sprinklers.

You probably see fire sprinklers in commercial places all the time; maybe where you work or at your favorite stores. These systems are an effective method for controlling fires quickly.

They’re less common in homes, but they work there just as well.

The risk of dying in a home fire decreases by about 85 percent if sprinklers are present.

Research shows when sprinklers were present, fires were kept to the room of origin 97 percent of the time. That means the sprinkler activates and puts out the fire before it has a chance to spread to other places in the home. The National Fire Protection Association and the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition want you to know these facts: Only one sprinkler activates: If a fire starts, the closest sprinkler will activate, spraying water to control the flames, heat and deadly smoke. That fast control gives you time to escape to safety. In most cases, just one sprinkler is needed.

10-26 gallons of water per minute - a fraction of the water that fire hoses use. Because of the sprinkler’s fast action and less water flow, the property loss in a sprinklered home fire is far less than in an unsprinklered home fire.

Home fires are deadly in 2 minutes or less: It takes 9-12 minutes or more for a fire department to get notification, respond and begin suppression. A sprinkler controls the fire before it can spread, protecting residents and the responding firefighters.

Smoke alarms are not enough, they can only detect a fire, not fight it. Fire sprinklers detect the fire and automatically control it, saving lives and property.

Sprinklers are reliable and easy to maintain: Fire sprinkler mishaps are generally less likely and less severe than home plumbing system problems. Maintenance is simple.

Oral Health As You Age

We all know brushing our teeth twice a day is crucial to keeping our smile bright, but most of us probably don’t understand how dental hygiene can impact our overall health, especially as we age. Going to the dentist is one of the most important things we can do for our health.

Alison Komarek, DDS, with UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement, answers some of the most pressing questions older adults have regarding their oral health.

Q: How often do I need to go to the dentist?

A: Adults, especially those 65 and older, should get to the dentist every six months to one year.

Routine dental exams are critical, as they allow your dental team to develop a baseline for your overall oral health, so they can spot changes as you age. Dental X-rays may be taken. These are useful in helping to detect cavities or other areas of concern that are not noticeable by looking

in the mouth. Even if you have no remaining teeth, routine X-rays are helpful to evaluate the remaining bone and soft tissues.

A head and neck screening for oral cancers is also recommended. Oral cancer primarily affects older adults and routine screenings are the best way to help ensure early detection.

Q: What is gum disease and is it treatable?

A: Gum disease, an infection of tissues that surround and support teeth, is one of the most common oral health issues facing older adults.

Gum disease can be hard to detect, as it is often painless. Signs of gum disease include: * Gums that bleed easily, or are red and swollen * Receding gum line * Loose or sensitive teeth The earlier your dentist can catch this manageable disease, the better. Early-stage gum disease is generally straightforward to manage through professional cleanings, while late-stage gum disease can be more complex.

Q: My mouth has gotten drier as I age, what is that all about?

A: You’re not alone here - dry mouth, or xerostomia, affects 30 percent of adults age 65 and older, according to the American Dental Association. Dry mouth is often caused by medication you may be taking; ask your doctor or pharmacist if xerostomia is a side effect of one or more of your medications.

Bottom line: Adhering to a consistent dental hygiene routine and seeing the dentist regularly are some of the best things you can do for your oral health. In addition, if you see or feel something out of the ordinary in your mouth, call your dentist and make a dental appointment as soon as possible.

Digital Decluttering There’s an aspect of tidying up that most of us may be forgetting: our digital clutter. From Christmas pictures that are still taking up memory on your phone, to hundreds of old texts that are eating up your gigabytes, there are plenty of things you can digitally declutter, and once you get started, you’ll be amazed at how zen you’ll feel.

1. Organize your photos: Photos are notorious for taking up a ton of space, and can add up quickly if you don’t regularly back them up. To get started, find a free cloud-based service to help organize your pictures. As you upload, make sure to select “delete after uploading” to kill two birds with one stone and save a little time. No matter the method you chose, take the time to protect your photos and get them in order. You can even go one step further and make it a monthly routine to make your storage easier to maintain!

2. Delete old texts: Text conversations can pile up fast and take up valuable storage, especially if they contain images or videos. There’s no need to keep unimportant ones around. As you go through your messages, save only the vital conversations you’d need to keep as a record or for reference, otherwise, send them to the trash!

For the messages with images and videos, use the advice in the first tip to stay organized and limit storage use.

3. Tidy up your email: The depths of some email accounts can be a dark and scary place. Email is a primary means of communication in the world today and there’s nothing worse than not being able to find an important message when you need it. Tidy up your inbox by taking some time to delete all junk and trash messages, and then organize further by adding folders where you can store likeminded emails. Work emails go in one folder, PTA emails in another, and so on and so forth.

4. Delete unused apps: Apps not only take up your device’s memory, but can make for a cluttered screen too. If you find yourself consistently scrolling left and right trying to locate an app, that may be a sign that you have too many, or just need a little organization. Pare down your apps by deleting the ones that you never use. Then move the ones you use most frequently to the first screen, leaving lesser-used apps toward the back. You can also group similar apps into folders to further clear up your screen.

5. Clean up your desktop: Finally, find a quick 15 minutes to clean up your computer’s desktop.

Having rogue folders labeled “miscellaneous” and random icons cluttering up your screen can make it difficult to find what you actually need at a moment’s notice. Once you sort through everything, you’ll free up space and have a great new system in place to find files with ease.

Cuts & Scrapes Parents never want to see their kids hurt, but when those minor cuts or scrapes do occur, it’s important to know what to do - and what to use to help prevent infection and get little ones back to their adventures.

“As parents, we want to protect our kids, especially when it comes to treating the minor cuts and scrapes that are an inevitable part of growing up,” says Dr. Natasha Burgert, a pediatrician and healthy child advocate. “Knowing the correct way to treat a minor cut, scrape or burn, and the first aid treatment you should have on hand, can help you feel prepared to face the unpredictable.”

Dr. Burgert stresses that parents need to be focused on prevention. “Infection prevention is priority number one in first aid. When your child gets hurt, your first line of defense is a topical antiseptic to protect against germs and help prevent infection,” she notes.

Step 1: Clean the affected area If there is any minor bleeding, get that under

control first by applying gentle pressure with a clean tissue or cloth.

Make sure to remove any dirt, gravel or debris that may be stuck in the skin.

Step 2: Help prevent infection with a proper antiseptic, every time It’s important that you select the proper first aid product with the right ingredients; it’s not one size fits all! A topical antiseptic like Betadine is the first line of defense. After the minor wound is clean, apply Betadine to kill germs and help prevent infection.

Step 3: Bandages to the rescue Not all scrapes will require a bandage. However, if there is open skin of any kind, it’s wise to keep it covered to reduce exposure to outside germs.

Keep in mind, the psychology of a bandage can have a big impact on kids, so even if it might not be necessary, providing one could help calm nerves.

“Smart parents know that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” says Dr. Burgert.

“Understanding what to do when your child gets a minor cut, scrape or burn, makes you feel confident that you are taking the steps necessary to help prevent infection.”

Headache Help You’ve been there before - you wake up and immediately feel the pulsing in your head, you get to work and can feel the pounding pressure mounting as you move between looking at your computer screen and meetings, you’re gearing up for a fun day out with your kids but you cringe as the pain in your head magnifies with every shout of excitement.

It can be easy to dismiss a headache as normal, but normal shouldn’t be confused with common.

Headaches can also be caused by your daily habits that may be easily removed from your routine or can help your doctor develop a treatment plan.

Know your headache and migraine triggers * Food is one of the more common triggers, from smoked foods to alcohol and avocados, that is often overlooked. Keep a food journal to see if you can identify patterns and triggers * Weather changes * For women, menstruation and hormone fluctuations or imbalance

* Screen time * Stress and a compromised sleep schedule

Headaches or uncharacteristic migraine symptoms can indicate you need medical attention. People are often reluctant to call their healthcare provider or go to the ER because they don’t want to arrive only to learn that nothing out of the ordinary is wrong.

Diamond advises, “If your symptoms are out of the ordinary for you, absolutely seek medical attention from a specialist and get help. Your headache or migraine should not keep you from living your life to its fullest.”

Child Hunger

Did you know more than 13 million youth in the U.S. don’t know where their next meal is coming from? This is especially true during the summer, when children and teens don’t have access to free or reduced-cost lunches or breakfasts offered during the school year. In fact, over 22 million kids receive free or reduced-cost lunch during the school year, yet only 3.8 million kids have access during the summer, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

While you may not realize it, many children are food insecure and going hungry in communities across the country. Looks can be deceiving children who appear obese are often nutrientstarved and over-served cheap food filled with empty calories. A child’s growth, physical and mental health, cognitive development and performance in school all depend on receiving adequate nutrition.

To help combat child hunger, the YMCA of the USA offers a Summer Food Program in over 2,500 locations for kids and teens, providing nutritious meals, snacks and activities to keep children healthy and well-nourished all year.

“Just because school is out during the summer doesn’t mean child hunger takes a vacation,” says Stacey McDaniel, Anti-Hunger Initiatives Specialist at YMCA of the USA. “There are millions of children and teens who are hungry every single day - and that doesn’t go away in the summertime.”

How can you help children struggling with hunger? Here are some concrete steps.

Give to a food pantry.

Find out what your local food pantry needs.

Typically, they need items such as canned proteins like tuna, salmon, chicken, beef or beans; peanut butter; plus canned fruits and vegetables without added salt or sugar. Ask if they accept fresh produce and milk, as this is often what is most lacking in the diets of children struggling with hunger. Organize a food drive with your house of worship, civic group or neighborhood to maximize your efforts.

If you can’t donate food, ask your local food pantry if you can donate time. Even sorting and organizing food can be helpful.

With popular obstacle- and ninja-style shows taking over TV, you might be curious what it takes to become a part of the competition. When beginning to train for any obstacle-style event:

1. Find a local training gym or park As the popularity of the shows has grown, so too has the desire for more obstacle-style training facilities. Research what is available in your area.

Indoor gyms and outdoor obstacle parks offer multiple whole-body fitness and agility options for children ages 5 to 12 and teens/adults ages 13 and over, so the whole family can participate.

2. Use your body weight as a training tool If you can’t find training opportunities within 30 minutes of your home, focus on body-weight training and calisthenics - the type of training gymnasts do - to build your skills. Keep in mind that even if you can bench a lot of weight, it’s not the same as holding your own body weight. Train by using your own body weight as resistance because that is what will be tested on many of the obstacles.

3. Work on speed, balance and agility Being agile and having good balance can help you conquer some of the toughest obstacles. Competitors that only focus on upper body strength will slip up on seemingly easier parts of the course simply because they don’t have good balance or speed. The faster you can go, the less energy you’ll expend, which means you can go further without getting tired. Speed can also be an alternative to balance. If you can go through some obstacles quickly, you’ll not have to rely on stellar balance skills.

4. Find friends and build camaraderi What makes obstacle- and ninja-style competitions unique is everyone supports each other. It’s a competition, but competitors have strong bonds and encourage the success of each participant. When you start training and decide you enjoy the sport, try joining some local groups so you can build your own camaraderie.

5. Explore mental training A big part of succeeding at this sport is mental strength. A mental block is always the hardest obstacle, so if you make a mistake, don’t dwell on it. Repetition helps you gain confidence so your mind trusts your body.
