From Me To You... We are at a new stage in our lives, we have finally arrived at our Empty Nest. It feels like an amazing achievement to be honest. I have had the responsibility of raising children since 1988 (with one year off for good behavior) and I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I am so proud of the adults we have raised who are leading their lives and forging their own paths. But before I can truly hand off all responsibility, I have to get the last two to the finish line - graduation and college. I just wound up two sets of final college tours, and let me tell you, I learned a few interesting things along the way. Not about college or even raising children. About the Wonderful World of Travel. That is what my life has become of late. From Mom to travel agent in one easy step. Between scouring the internet for airfares, arranging hotel accommodation, and transportation at the college, I have barely had time to catch my breath. I did discover a way to save money on flights in the process. I was searching for cheap flights from Phoenix to Pullman, Washington. I know the normal routes and airlines that service

them, but during my search a new option popped up. I didn’t want to book with the cut-rate site that had the deal, but they did show me how to get my son from here to Pullman in less time, and saved me $300 in the process - book separate tickets through two different airlines! That moment when I had purchased the first fare and was trying to secure a seat on the next one gave me chills, but it all worked out in the end. He made it there and is on his way back as I write this. This was his first solo adventure and although I was nervous that something would go wrong, he navigated it with ease. He even got to play in the snow, in April... The upside of that experience is that I know he is going to be just fine on his own, and that eases the transition into the next stage of our lives. But is it truly an empty nest? Not really, they are all still there with us, we just have to loosen the reins and let them do it on their own from here.

Medicare Scams Since 1965, Medicare has provided health care coverage to millions of Americans. Almost 64 million people in the United States were enrolled in Medicare as of October 2021, with more people becoming eligible and enrolling each year. Anyone on Medicare is at risk of Medicare-related fraud, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) continues to warn people to watch out for scammers who steal Medicare Numbers and other personal information to exploit beneficiaries’ benefits.

Broadly speaking, Medicare fraud occurs when someone makes false claims for health care services, procedures and equipment to obtain Medicare payments. Medicare fraud costs taxpayers billions of dollars and puts the health and welfare of beneficiaries at risk. The impact of these losses and risks is expanding as Medicare continues to serve a growing number of beneficiaries. “Medicare fraud is a serious issue that has affected millions of people in our country,” said CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure. “Anyone on Medicare is at risk of being a target of Medicare fraud, so you should use the CMS fraud tips to stay alert to protect yourself. By being aware of potential scams and reporting any you come across, you can do your part to protect yourself and others from Medicare fraud.” How to spot Medicare scams There are many types of Medicare scams, taking the form of unsolicited emails, phone calls, text messages, social media posts and phony websites. Scammers often claim to be from the Medicare office, an insurance company or a government office. They’ll ask for your personal and financial information, such as your Medicare or Social Security Number, so that they can submit false claims for payment. 6

Remember that Medicare will never call, text, email or contact you through social media asking for your Medicare Number.

Some common Medicare scams to watch out for include: * Offers of “free” genetic testing * Calls or emails about free medical equipment, such as a knee brace, walker or cane * Solicitations for other services, such as offers of “paid” clinical research trials While this is not a comprehensive list, these examples give you an idea of how to spot potential Medicare fraud. Scammers will do their best to present these services and products as genuine in exchange for your Medicare Number. How to protect yourself Now that you know how to spot Medicare fraud, you’ll need to know how to protect yourself from potential fraudsters. Remember to: * Guard your Medicare Number just like your Social Security card and credit card * Share your Medicare Number only with trusted health care providers * Review your Medicare statements, watch for services billed that look suspicious, and ask questions if something looks wrong How to report scammers Reporting Medicare fraud protects you and millions of other people with Medicare and those with disabilities. If you or someone you know have experienced Medicare fraud or suspect an offer you’ve received is a scam, report it as soon as possible. You will never be in trouble for reporting fraud. To learn more about Medicare fraud, visit Medicare.gov/fraud. To report potential Medicare fraud, you can call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc. gov.

Online Safety

It’s never been more important for parents to ensure their children are safe and staying productive online. With so many popular apps, websites and streaming services, keeping track of what your children are exposed to can be difficult. Even the most cautious kids can become victims of cybercrimes, especially child identity theft. Children 18 years old and younger are often targets of identity theft because their unmarked credit scores and Social Security numbers are rarely monitored. According to a report by Javelin Research, child identity fraud costs families in the U.S. almost $1 billion a year and requires much time for parents to resolve. The report also found that 1.25 million children were victims of identity theft in 2021 and 1 in 50 children became an ID fraud victim in 2021 These statistics are frightening, but that doesn’t mean that parents need to live in fear. By taking proactive steps to protect your children online,

you can empower them to use technology responsibly while keeping them safe from potential online threats. Child internet safety is not a new topic, but it’s become even more relevant to the public thanks to the rapidly growing number of social media platforms and other digital sites and apps. The issue is so prevalent that it’s caught the attention of lawmakers. Introduced to the U.S. Senate in February, the Kids Online Safety Act is a bipartisan bill that would create new rules and safeguards to protect children from stalking, exploitation, addiction and dangerous materials online. “The internet can open up a world of experiences for children, but it can also expose them and the whole family to digital crime,” said Kelly Merryman, President and COO of Aura, an all-inone digital safety platform. “Parental controls are a powerful tool that allows your children to safely explore the internet while giving you muchneeded peace of mind.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that kids as young as eight years old spend an average of six hours per day looking at screens, and that number only goes up as kids get older. While you can’t monitor every minute your kids spend online, you can use parental controls to protect them as they enjoy the latest trends, games and shows. With these tools, families can foster healthy internet habits in kids as well as protect them (and you) from potential cybercrimes. To learn more about parental controls and access a free trial of Aura’s family plan, visit Aura’s website https://www.aura.com/

The Dr. Is In

As a parent, seeing your child struggling can be overwhelming. Between 2016 and 2020, the rates of depression and anxiety in children and adolescents increased by over 25 percent. Unfortunately, these rates have continued to rise since 2020 as a result of the stress and changes from the COVID-19 pandemic. What can you as a parent do to support your child? 1. Encourage your child to talk about how they are feeling and work to increase your child’s emotional literacy. 2. Limit screen time- this one is SO hard, I get it! Unfortunately, research has shown that for every hour above 1 hour of screen time per day there is an exponential increase in depression and anxiety. 3. Know the signs of when to get helpnoticeable changes in appetite and sleep

(increases or decreases), changes in mood such as irritability and isolating, a drop in grades, and/ or less activity. The signs are not always the same for kids and adults. 4. Spend positive and productive time together as a family talking, playing games or being outside (fresh air, activity and sunlight are linked to decreased depression and anxiety). Families who know me or follow Periscope Pediatrics, know I frequently recommend the UnGame as a great way to have meaningful and deep conversations with your children in a less intrusive way. This can be done in combination with a game like UNO or Jenga or have everyone draw a card at the dinner table to get the conversation flowing. 5. If your child comes to you to discuss depression, anxiety or even suicidal thoughts, DON’T take it personally and DO take it seriously. Remain supportive and understand how hard (and scary) it likely was for them to come to you about what they are experiencing 6. Don’t be afraid to get help. Fortunately, resources are available: from teen suicide hotlines to the Crisis team who will come to your house to evaluate if your child needs a higher level of care for mental health concerns to your school counselor, short term resources abound. Just know, you and your child are not alone; this has been a difficult time for everyone and many children are struggling- your child’s mental health is not a reflection of your parenting!!! And above all, remember you are not alone! Submitted by Counselor Amber- Periscope Pediatrics

Eating Clean We’ve all heard the phrase “clean eating” but for some, creating a daily diet made up of only these foods can be intimidating, especially when looking to put a healthy meal on the table at the end of a busy day. Fortunately, “eating clean” doesn’t have to be daunting. Susan Bowerman, M.S., R.D., CSSD, CSOWM, FAND, senior director of Worldwide Nutrition Education and training at Herbalife Nutrition, shares four ways to clear your diet clutter: * Read food labels to help you ditch extra sugar, salt and fat. Check labels for fat, sodium and sugar content to find those with the least amounts. For example, choose plain yogurt and whole grain cereals rather than pre-sweetened and refined products, and look for unsalted or low sodium canned and frozen veggies.

Estrella Publishing - The Hamlet magazine

* Lose the refined starches and up your fruit and veggie intake. Including a fruit or vegetable at every meal can “squeeze out” many of the unwanted foods and ingredients you might otherwise eat. * Get rid of the calorie clutter in your beverages. Between sugary sodas, fruit juices, alcoholic beverages and fancy coffee drinks, many people take in hundreds of calories a day from beverages alone. Plain tea is a great alternative because it can be drunk hot or cold, has virtually no calories, and has natural compounds that may offer some health benefits. * Clear the clutter from your fridge, freezer and pantry. Fill your pantry with high-fiber whole grains (like 100% whole wheat pasta, bread, cereals and flour, and foods like quinoa, millet and brown rice). Buy beans and canned tomatoes for soups, stews and pasta. Stock your refrigerator and freezer with plain fruits and veggies and nonfat or low-fat dairy products. And keep canned tuna or salmon, frozen fish filets or chicken breasts to add protein to your quick, healthy meals.

Days are getting longer, temps are warming up, and you have lots of plans - but do you lack the energy to make them happen? Fortunately, simple meal and snack swaps, plus new approaches to your exercise routine, can help get you moving again. For better long-term energy and nutrition, try: * Apples - Apples provide filling fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants. * Avocados - These are a great source of heartfriendly monounsaturated fat, plus oleic acid, folate and vitamin E. * Nuts - Most nuts combine protein, healthy fats and fiber that help you feel full, so you’re less likely to experience energy dips. * Leafy green vegetables - Spinach is one example, full of nutrients like fiber, iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamins A, C, E and K - plus energy-boosting iron. Add spinach to any egg dish, soup or salad. * Fatty fish - Salmon is popular for good reason, as it’s flavorful plus full of protein and hearthealthy omega-3 fatty acids to fill you up and minimize blood sugar swings.

Strokes need FAST response Did you know that stroke has no age limits, and younger adults are increasingly affected by stroke and its risk factors? Strokes happen when blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. In either case, parts of the brain become damaged or die. Every minute counts when a stroke is suspected. May is National Stroke Awareness Month, when health care professionals remind the public that understanding the signs of stroke are key to getting care.

Your Company Can Grow with our Business Coaching Services • One-on-one consultation • Planning tailored to your business • Growth strategies you can use • Mentoring you can trust • 30+ years business experience

Stroke affects about 800,000 people in the U.S. each year. Thankfully, residents of the West Valley have a Primary Plus Stroke Center nearby at Abrazo West Campus in Goodyear. Risk factors commonly associated in older adults, such as hypertension, diabetes, tobacco use and obesity are now being seen in younger stroke patients, according to Amanda Rowell, MPH, BSN, PCCN, SCRN, RN, Stroke Program Coordinator at Abrazo West Campus. More than 87 percent of strokes in the U.S. are ischemic strokes, caused by a clot that cuts off blood flow to a part of the brain. These types of strokes are largely treatable if a patient gets to a hospital in time. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers a simple test to act FAST if you think someone may be having a stroke: Face – ask the person to smile, does one side of the face droop? Arms – can the person raise both arms? Does one arm drift downward? Speech – ask the person to repeat a simple phrase, is the speech slurred or strange? Time – if you see any of these signs, call 911 right away. Also, note the time when the symptoms first appear, this helps health care providers determine the type of treatment needed.

Allergies

If you have or suspect you have seasonal allergies, there are many ways you can address your symptoms. Take stock of your environment and learn how to relieve indoor and outdoor allergy symptoms. Below are some tips to help you manage your spring allergy triggers. 1. Wear protective clothing When you spend time outdoors, make sure to wear pants, long-sleeve shirts and hats help keep pollen off your skin and out of your hair. Make sure to wear a pair of sunglasses to keep pollen out of your eyes. Finally, when you’re ready to go back indoors, take off your shoes to minimize outdoor allergens coming into your home. 2. Use an antihistamine Allergy medications like over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamines can help relieve allergy symptoms. While there are many allergy medications, a 24-hour antihistamine taken once daily can be incredibly effective in managing allergies during the day. 3. Shower Showering, or at the very least rinsing off after spending time outside, can help manage

allergens. Even with protective clothing, pollen and other allergens can get stuck on your hair and skin. Rinsing off any pollen can also reduce the number of outdoor allergens that make it indoors. 4. Change your clothes and stay on top of your laundry Once you finish showering or rinsing off, make sure to change into a fresh set of clothes. Avoid putting clothes you’ve just worn outside back in the closet and try to do laundry at least twice a week. When your laundry is dry, clean the dryer lint trap after every load to eliminate any lingering allergens. 5. Use a nasal spray If you are in need of 24-hour continuous relief from nasal allergy congestion, Nasacort is a nondrowsy nasal spray with no scent or harsh taste. 6. Use an air purifier Any remaining pollen that may have snuck into the home will stay suspended in the air. Using an air purifier can remove airborne pollen, dust and other irritants from your indoor air so you can breathe easily at home. Keep an eye on the filter and regularly clean it of any trapped allergens. By using these tips, you can reduce your exposure to allergens and manage your allergies so you can enjoy the outdoors again.
