Areas in the preserve with wildflower displays usually include the Bajada, Las Lomitas and Ranger Kiwanic, accessible from the Central Avenue entrance. The roadway leading to the Gila Valley overlook (Central Avenue entrance) also offers wildflower growth. Also, look for wildflowers on the north facing slopes in the Pima Canyon and Beverly Canyon (Javalina Trail) entrances of the park.

You can’t go wrong on a wildflower hunt in Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, which boasts a huge diversity of blooms. Look in particular along the western end of the Spur Cross Trail and, if you are up for a challenge, the southern part of the Elephant Mountain loop.

The Superstition Mountains are already a sight to behold, so blooming wildflowers only make the scenery even more gorgeous. After a rainy season, you’ll see plenty of brittlebush and poppies, as well as jojoba, Mormon tea and more. Try out Jacob’s Crosscut Trail for a laid back hike, or Treasure Loop Trail for something a bit more challenging. For a more laid back viewing of wildflowers, try a scenic drive along the Apache Trail.

PHOENIX SONORAN PRESERVE Find yellow brittlebush, red-orange globemallow, marigold and more along Apache Wash Trailhead. Also check the north-facing slopes on trails from the Desert Vista Trail parking area, including areas along the Desert Tortoise and Verde trails, both accessible from the trailhead parking area.

USERY MOUNTAIN REGIONAL PARK In this park on Phoenix’s east side, you’ll find an easy stroll with a pretty payoff on Merkle Trail. The Pass Mountain loop hike is a more strenuous option for hikers to take in over seven miles of scenery and spring blooms.

From Me To You...

After a long trip to check on my family I am firmly back in this country and in this time zone. I brought back all the chocolate I could fit into my suitcases and the most beautiful, delicate mugs from an art gallery. They are light, thin, perfect for a cuppa in the afternoon and even better, my Dad bought them for me.

He wanted to get me a gift and although he waved many options before my eyes, nothing seemed right. I had seen these beautiful mugs in an art gallery on one of my first days there, but I hesitated. They were expensive. But so beautiful.

The shape of them is wonderful to hold. Cradle.

The texture is sublime, almost soft to the touch, and there is an indentation for your thumb halfway up the vessel. It adds to the whole experience of sipping a warm cup of tea.

I did not think I would get them but in the end I made room in my luggage and dad bought me two! They made it all the way across the Atlantic in one piece (well one piece each) and I treasure them.

Until I get careless and I knock them against the sink, or drop them and then they will break.

Which they will, eventually. I am under no illusions about my ability to keep these safe and hand them down to successive generations. But I use them anyway.

That is one of the great secrets of life. If you have something you love, you should use it.

Don’t hide it away in a cupboard in case the Queen comes for a visit. What if she never does?

Then you are depriving yourself of a pleasure in life, saving it for a rainy day and, news flash, we live in a desert. If there is one thing I have learned from the last few years it is that nothing is guaranteed. Nothing is a sure thing. Take the trip, smell the roses, use the fancy mug.

Whether you just graduated or haven’t been able to start building credit, you should know a lack of credit history can create difficulties down the road. Without a credit score or solid credit history, you may be unable to borrow money to buy a car, or could have trouble getting an apartment or job. Your credit history is viewed by many as not just a summary of your creditworthiness, but also trustworthiness, which is why some employers and landlords check your credit history. Credit histories take time to build, and to some degree may indicate to others how good you are at managing your money.

To build and improve your credit history, here are important tips to follow.

1. Use credit - carefully Some may think using no credit is the way to a better credit score, but the opposite is true.

Using a credit card to make small purchases, then paying them off on time is the best way to build your credit score.

Your score will improve due to how long you hold credit accounts, and also by: * Making on-time payments every month * Using no more than 30% of your available credit * Not having too many lenders checking your credit at the same time * Not applying for multiple loans or credit cards at one time

3. Apply for a standard personal loan or credit card Begin building your credit history by applying for a personal loan or a credit card. Keep in mind: Not all lenders will approve you without a credit history. Instead of applying to a bunch of credit card companies at once, which can hurt your credit score, seek lenders like Oportun who specialize in making loans to people with limited or no credit history.

4. Become an authorized user Another way to start establishing credit is to become an authorized user on someone else’s credit card account. You can do this by asking a friend or family member who has a good credit history to add your name to their account. This gives you the benefit of having that person’s credit payments included on your credit report.

Being an authorized user is a great way to help build a positive credit history.

5. Check your credit score By law, consumers are entitled to request a copy of their credit report by contacting any of the three major bureaus - Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Checking your reports helps ensure that all the information is accurate, as well as showing you what factors may be impacting your score so you can make improvements.

Follow these tips consistently over time, and you’ll be able to build a solid credit history - and a better future.

2. Plan ahead to pay bills on time Use calendar reminders to keep track of payment due dates each month. If money is tight, contact creditors ahead of the due date to let them know you’re having difficulties, and to ask about options like making a partial payment or changing the due date.

Your pets are part of your family, and you would do just about anything for them. From the tail wags and face licks to the head bumps and purr fests, your pets show their unconditional love in many ways, every single day. If you’re looking for ways to reciprocate, consider the following tips for things you can do to show your pet some extra love.

1. Have a “yes day” with your pet When was the last time you devoted time to solely focusing on your pet and doing the activities you know they love to do? The truth is, your beloved pets love nothing more than hanging out with you - so why not make a whole day of it?

Start by making a list of all the activities your pet enjoys or saying ‘yes’ to your pet’s cues to see

where the day takes you. One more treat after a walk through the park? Yes! One more minute of scratches behind the ear? Yes! Whatever you end up doing, know that any time spent with your pet is time they’ll love.

2. Feed them nutritious, delicious food One simple, yet important, way to keep your dog or cat happy and healthy is by feeding them nutritious and tasty food and treats. 3. Find a great new toy Animals need the occasional stimulation of a new toy or game, and they love playing with you. 4. Teach your pet a new trick Most dogs - and even some cats - enjoy the challenge of learning something new.

Use their favorite treats to teach simple tricks at home like: * “Paw” - Get your dog in a sitting position and show them you have a treat. Hold the treat in your hand close to your dog’s face and under their chin. Most dogs will try to paw at your hand to get to the treat. If your dog does this and touches your hand, give them the treat and praise. * “Roll Over” - Sit in front of your cat with a treat 2-3 inches away from their nose. If you want your cat to roll to your right/their left, slowly arc the treat on a slight incline toward their right ear. For the left side, do the opposite, and reward with a tasty treat when the trick is completed.

The Dr. Is In

Hi, it’s Dr Gabe, your friendly neighborhood pediatrician. I’m answering more of parents’ most common questions. The next question is “What’s the use of taking my ill child to the pediatrician when they won’t prescribe an antibiotic?” I realize that it’s hard to see your child ill but there is no magic medicine to make your child feel instantly better- including antibiotics. Now don’t get me wrong, antibiotics have their place in treating illness and can be life- saving but antibiotics should only be used when necessary.

Most of the common infections in our communities are caused by viruses such as colds and influenza. Other illnesses, like strep throat, are caused by bacteria. Some infections are caused by viruses and then a bacterial illness will develop on top, like a cold that develops into pneumonia or an ear infection. Antibiotics can only treat bacterial illness and will not be effective against a viral illness.

Just like any medication, antibiotics have side effects. Some of these side effects are mild like an upset stomach or diarrhea but there is also risk of severe side effects. These include severe

intestinal infection, severe allergic reactions, antibiotic resistance, and disruption of the microbiome (the natural bacteria that live in our intestines). Antibiotic resistance develops when antibiotics are overused. It is becoming increasingly common to have infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to the most widely used antibiotics. As there is little research going into developing new antibiotics at this point, we, as a society, need to be good stewards of our antibiotic usage by not overprescribing and taking the medication as prescribed.

Beyond the risk of severe side effects and antibiotic resistance, research is coming out on how important the microbiome is, especially in children. Antibiotic overuse can disrupt the microbiome in children which has been linked to negative effects on brain development, decreased immune systems, asthma, obesity, diabetes, mood disorders, and even ADHD. Antibiotics are not just antibiotics: they are a medication with side effects and risks. When your pediatrician doesn’t prescribe an antibiotic, just know that we are doing this after weighing out all the risks and benefits and always having your child’s best interests in mind.

Air Fryer Potato Crusted Lemon Pepper Salmon Ingredients • Buttermilk Whipped Potatoes • 1-1/3 cup Water • 1 teaspoon Salt • ¼ cup Unsalted Butter, softened • ½ cup Milk • 2-2/3 cup Instant Mashed Potatoes • 1/3 cup Buttermilk • ¼ cup Sour Cream • Lemon Pepper Salmon • 1-1/2 pounds Salmon Filets, skin and pin bones removed Cut into 4-ounce pieces • 2 teaspoons Olive Oil • 2 Tablespoons Lemon Pepper Seasoning • 2 Tablespoons Fresh Chives, chopped Preparation 1. To prepare the mashed potatoes heat the water to a boil and add the salt and the butter.

When the butter is melted add the cold milk and stir in the instant mashed potato flakes. Allow the mixture to sit for about a minute, then fluff with a fork. Gently fold in the buttermilk and the

Transfer the potatoes to a pastry bag or a resealable plastic bag with a star tip if desired (you can also gently spoon the mashed potatoes on top of the salmon if you don’t want to be super fancy). It’s important the potatoes be creamy but not too loose, otherwise they won’t stay on top of the salmon, and you will have a mess in your air fryer.

2. Place your salmon filets on the air fryer rack and lightly coat the filets with the olive oil.

Season the salmon all over with the lemon pepper seasoning and pipe some of the mashed potatoes on top of the salmon.

3. Set the air Fryer to 400 F and cook the salmon for 12 minutes, if you wish your salmon to be well done, cook it for 14 minutes. This of course depends on the starting temperature of your salmon as well as the thickness.

4. When the timer goes off, remove the salmon, the potatoes should be lightly golden and the salmon should be opaque but still moist.

5. Plate the salmon and garnish the dish with the fresh chopped chives and some fresh slices of lemon if desired.

Eating Disorders While eating disorders are commonly known for warning signs such as frequent dieting, noticeable under-eating, overeating, and more, they can also be present in hidden ways. Though these overlooked signs do not equal an eating disorder, spotting the lesser-known signs and talking about them to reduce stigma and offer support can significantly change someone’s life.

Here are some examples:

Eating Rituals Cutting or tearing food into small pieces, using excessive condiments, not allowing food to touch on the plate, and arranging food into groups are all signs of eating rituals that may be worth exploring. In many cases, these tactics may be used to distract others from noticing how little food is being consumed during a meal.

While these behaviors may provide temporary comfort and relief for individuals who engage in them, they can reinforce disordered eating by successfully going undetected.

Extreme Exercising While exercise habits may appear healthy, in excess, they can be signs of an eating disorder. Some forms of purging involve excessive exercising or sweating, despite physical and mental limitations.

Exercise may also be used to replace eating a meal, such as during a lunch hour.

Feeling Cold While we all feel cold at times, those who have eating disorders can have trouble maintaining body temperature and may frequently complain of coldness due to malnutrition or a lack of body fat, which helps the body withstand cold.

Body Image Insecurity Hearing someone make frequent selfdeprecating comments about their appearance may be a sign to explore. Those with poor or false perceptions of their physique, weight, or attractiveness may be susceptible to disordered eating and exercising habits.

Changes in Physical Appearance Our bodies require nutrients to maintain healthy skin, strong nails, and thick hair. Someone malnourished may lack the necessary building blocks to have a visibly healthy appearance.

Physical signs include eroded teeth, thin or fine powdery hair, dry and yellowed skin, nails, sunken cheeks or eye sockets, swollen jawline, or disturbed menstruation or libido.

Symptoms of eating disorders are not always apparent, and identifying warning signs in yourself or others and obtaining help can save lives.

Did you know hearing trouble is the third most common chronic health condition? The CDC reports that noise above 70 decibels (dB) over a prolonged period may start damaging your hearing, and noise above 120 dB can cause immediate harm. Not sure what decibel level you’re experiencing? Here’s an easy rule of thumb: If you have to shout to hear conversation, it’s too loud.

Here are common noise hazards you may encounter every day, and how you can protect your hearing.

1. Home projects Tools around the home, including lawn mowers, l and power tools, can be about 90-112 dB. This is considered a dangerous noise, especially when you use them for long periods of time.

2. Live music events When music is played for large audiences, the noise level is increased to about 110-130 dB. Even smaller venues using amplification can be dangerously loud. Listening to music at this volume for over an hour causes hearing loss,
