Welcome to 2024! We made it once more around the sun on our journey through time - a rollercoaster ride that we’re all strapped into, and Father Time is the mischievous carnival barker, egging us on with his relentless ticking.

He’s the ultimate stand-up comedian, dropping punchlines in the form of birthdays, deadlines, and unexpected plot twists. The New Year, with its glittering ball drop and champagne toasts, is just Time’s way of saying, “Hey, buckle up for another lap around the sun!”

Now, let’s talk resolutions. The New Year’s resolutions are the punchlines we come up with to counter Time’s relentless jesting. We promise ourselves to hit the gym, eat more greens, and finally learn that elusive salsa dance. But let’s be honest, Father Time is sitting in the audience, snickering at our well-intentioned attempts to

outwit him. “Oh, you think a gym membership is going to stop me?” he chuckles, adjusting his scythe.

As the clock strikes midnight, it’s as if the universe is delivering its own punchline— “Surprise! You made it to the next level!” We cheer, we hug, and we sing “Auld Lang Syne” with gusto, as if by sheer celebration, we can slow down Time’s relentless march.

In this grand comedy of existence, the New Year is our chance to join the laughter, to embrace the absurdity of resolutions, and to revel in the unpredictable hilarity that time throws our way.

It’s a reminder that we have the power to find joy in the journey, to laugh at life’s quirks, and to share a good-natured guffaw with the ultimate timekeeper himself.

So, here’s to another year in the cosmic comedy club! May your New Year be filled with laughter, resilience in the face of cosmic jokes, and the wisdom to appreciate the punchlines that make this wild ride worthwhile. Yum Yum New Year’s Day Black-Eyed Peas

Total Time 60 minutes (plus soaking) Ingredients 8 servings 2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling 4 oz. slab bacon, cut into ½” pieces (optional) 1 medium onion, finely chopped 5 sprigs thyme, plus leaves for serving 4 garlic cloves, smashed 2 cups dried black-eyed peas, soaked overnight, drained Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper Step 1 Warm 2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil in a large saucepan on the stovetop over medium heat.

Add 4 oz. slab bacon, cut into ½” pieces (if using), and cook, stirring occasionally, until some of the fat begins to collect in the pan and bacon starts to look shiny, about 5 minutes.

Resolutions

While rising energy prices can lead to higher heating and cooling costs, any spike in energy bills should invite further investigation. If your home’s heating and cooling bills are higher than normal, checking with your neighbors to see if they’ve noticed similar cost increases is a good first step. If owners of similar sized homes in your area are not noticing higher utility bills, it may be time to take a closer look at specific aspects of your home’s heating and cooling system.

The individual components in a home’s HVAC system work together to help keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

The furnace, air conditioner and thermostat are typically the most obvious parts of a system.

However, other less visible elements, such as attic ductwork and insulation, also contribute to the HVAC system’s overall performance and energy efficiency. The ductwork in a home’s attic distributes conditioned air to rooms throughout the home. Leaks in ductwork, loose joints or poor connections between ductwork components can allow conditioned air to escape into the attic before it reaches the intended part of the home.

The amount of insulation in an attic also plays a role in comfort and energy efficiency.

What are some warning signs that a problem may be lurking in the attic? Rooms that are consistently too warm or too cold, or that have a musty odor, may indicate compromised attic ductwork. An increased level of dust inside the home is another sign that ductwork may need attention. Leaks in attic ductwork can allow dust and various particulates inside the attic to enter ducts. Distributed throughout the home, these particulates can negatively affect air quality.

While torn ductwork is an obvious sign of a problem, attic ductwork issues are often hard to see by simply looking around the space.

A contractor trained to inspect ductwork and assess insulation levels in the attic can identify issues that may reduce your comfort and lead to higher energy bills.

It is important to remember that a higher energy bill does not necessarily indicate a problem with equipment. An inspection by a heating and cooling contractor who brings a system perspective to caring for a home’s air and the attic infrastructure that supports it can help improve a home’s comfort and energy efficiency season after season.
