From Me To You...

Time is a funny thing. For many years time seemed to go so slowly. Every day lasted an eternity and there was little to distinguish one day from another. I measured my life in seasons or school and no school. Admittedly I was raising four children under 10 and wrangling my life in a new state, but still... I guess it is true that when you have small children the days are long and the years are short. I look back at that time in my life and remember just getting through the day.

Now it is very different. I spent months planning a trip this year. Coordinating schedules with the friends we were travelling with, finding and booking the best place to stay, organizing the things that needed to be taken care of here while we were gone. Then suddenly we were in the car, driving to our destination. The vacation itself flew by and we were home! Blink. Now I am submerged in my life again, that takes no time at all by the way, and looking ahead to other events.

I celebrated a milestone birthday this month and perhaps that is why I am musing on the

subject of time. By all intents and purposes I am now middle aged.

Wow, how did that happen? My parents were old when they hit this birthday, heck they were old 10 years before this birthday! And here I am, feeling the healthiest I think I have ever felt, more secure in myself as a person in my personal life, my marriage and my friendships. And yet. I have this label.

There is a theory in Sociology that is called the Self-Labelling Prophesy. Basically it posits that if you name someone in a certain way then that person will live up to the moniker you give them. The Smart Kid will achieve more success academically, The Bad Seed will feel like there is no point in trying and will continue to act out, The Bad Dog will continue to chew your baseboards and jump on the furniture. And The Middle Aged Woman will get ready for retirement and take up knitting. I don’t think I will go down that way. I already know how to knit and honestly it is not for me.

I have not even begun to do everything I am capable of and want to do. I just have to get to retirement so I have the time to do some of those things! And there it is again. Rushing towards something to be able to do the thing I think I can’t do yet. I need to slow down and be in the moment.

That is a phrase we are hearing a lot recently. It is apt though. We all could do with stopping and appreciating the now. Look around at your life and see what you have achieved already. What is good in your day? Whether it is as big as buying a new house or as small as checking off an item on your to-do list. Savor it. Enjoy the victories and don’t let time drag you along in its wake.

Car Seat Tips To help parents overcome their anxiety around child safety on the road, Volvo Car USA and Britax, two leaders in the field, worked together to curate helpful tips to keep children protected from harm and give peace of mind to parents everywhere.

Tip 1: Keep children in rear-facing car seats as long as possible.

In some states, children are required by law to sit rear-facing until a certain age. However, safety experts recommend children remain rear-facing until reaching the maximum height or weight restrictions for that seat. Rear-facing seats spread crash forces more evenly across the back of the car seat. Besides keeping children rear-facing as long as possible, make sure you’ve installed the safety seat correctly.

Tip 2: Install harnessed seats using either the LATCH system or the safety belt.

One of the most common misconceptions in car seat installation is that utilizing both the LATCH system and safety belt together adds

a layer of protection, when in fact, it’s not recommended. Read both the seat instructions and vehicle owner’s manual to determine the best way to install the car seat and ensure the seat does not move more than one inch sideto-side or front-to-back at the belt path once installed.

Tip 3: Avoid reaching into the back seat while driving.

Whether you’re reaching for an item, consoling a child or breaking up an argument, it’s safer to pull over and address the issue than to take your eyes off the road, even when stopped behind stalled traffic, at a stop sign or traffic signal.

Better to arrive at your destination late than to end up in an accident.

Tip 4: Secure items inside the car.

Limiting the number of items accessible to children in the back seat not only to makes it less likely to have an unexpected item hurled at the driver, but also prevents the possibility of items becoming projectiles that could harm passengers in the event of a crash.

Driver’s Ed

Learning how to drive and taking care of your vehicle are integral parts of growing up. In a recent Gauge Index survey, Hankook Tire found that nearly half (47 percent) of Americans got their driver’s license the first day they were eligible. But the learning doesn’t have to stop there. In fact, it shouldn’t! To keep drivers up to speed on vehicle maintenance basics, Hankook Tire outlines three things you may not have learned in driving school, but should have: Buckle up ... and check your tires Everyone knows when it comes to driving, it’s important to put safety first. But driving safety goes beyond just buckling up. Good car maintenance can lead to a safer drive, so start by kicking the tires before you even get into the car.

Hankook found that, had it been part of the driving test, most Americans said they would have gotten the worst grade on tire-related maintenance. Specifically, 40 percent said they would perform the worst at changing a tire, followed by checking tire tread (16 percent) and filling up tires with air (15 percent).

Navigate the parallel parking spot Let’s face it: parking can be tricky and while you may get the basics of parallel parking down from driver’s ed, the Gauge found that nearly twothirds (64 percent) of Americans still said parallel parking was the most difficult driving skill to master.

Don’t rely on technology alone You may not have learned to use a backup camera in driving school, but nowadays, new cars often come equipped with this helpful technology and more! The thing is, it’s easy to become too reliant on nifty gadgets and new technology. In fact, according to the Gauge, one-third of Americans (34 percent) rely solely on their backup cameras when backing up their vehicle. Of those with backup cameras, only 10 percent aren’t using the camera at all when backing up. Don’t let lane-keeping assist or GPS navigators keep you from the basics (like turning your head to check your blind spot). Remember that these are tools meant to assist you and not to be your primary go-to.

When it comes to the real-life test of maintenance and parking, here’s hoping you get a passing grade!

Medicare Enrollment Medicare Open Enrollment is about to kick off.

For most people already enrolled in Medicare, the annual Open Enrollment period (Oct. 15 through Dec. 7) is the only opportunity to make changes to your existing Medicare coverage.

During Medicare Open Enrollment, Medicare beneficiaries can switch Part D prescription drug plans; switch Medicare Advantage plans; switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage; or switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare.

Dan Klein, president and CEO of the Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation, offers the following tips for navigating Medicare Open Enrollment.

1. Do your homework Changes to your health status, doctors or other healthcare providers, prescription drugs or budget may mean that your current plan is no longer the most cost-effective choice for you.

2. Make sure your doctors and providers are innetwork

the plan, including the deductible, out-of-pocket limit, co-pays and coinsurance.

5. Determine how you will pay for your out-ofpocket costs There may be assistance available to you if you cannot afford the out-of-pocket costs for your prescription medications. You should research your options now.

You may qualify for a federal Medicare Low Income Subsidy to help pay for your prescription drug costs. You may also be eligible for a patient assistance program that provides people with financial assistance to cover out-of-pocket costs for their medical treatments. Fire Safety

This simple fire safety checklist can help ensure your home and family are protected from the threats of smoke, fire and carbon monoxide.

1) Install smoke alarms on every level and in every bedroom. Three out of every five home fire deaths result from fires in homes without smoke alarms or with no working smoke alarms, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). For maximum protection, install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.

2) Testing and maintaining alarms is key. Alarms should be tested regularly and replaced at least every 10 years. Help ensure your alarms remain in good, working order by changing the batteries at least every six months. Many cities and states require sealed 10-year battery alarms, so check

with your local fire department if you do not know what to install.

3) Equip your home with fire extinguishers.

Beyond alarms, having fire extinguishers - and knowing how to use them - is an important part of maintaining a safe home for you and your family. Every 24 seconds, a fire department responds to a fire, according to the NFPA, so being prepared to fight small fires is critical.

Place extinguishers in convenient locations on every level of the home, in the kitchen and in the garage.

4) Protect against the “silent killer.” An odorless and invisible gas, CO is the number one cause of accidental poisoning and can only be detected with an alarm - yet only 47% of homeowners report owning a CO alarm. Just like smoke alarms, be sure to check all CO alarms regularly using the “test” button for continued protection.

5) Plan. Practice. Repeat. Recent consumer research reveals that less than 50% of homeowners have an escape plan - and even fewer practice a plan regularly. Make sure to involve everyone in your household in creating a plan and practice it at least twice every year. As part of this plan, equip second-floor bedrooms with escape ladders and discuss how to use them. Identify two ways out of each room and a meeting place outside. Emphasize that once at the predesignated meeting area, call 911 and wait until officials clear your home to re-enter it safely.

Immunotherapy More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies, and as pollen production grows in intensity and duration due to longer freeze-free periods, that number is expected to rise. For chronic allergy sufferers, this can mean battling symptoms year-round, year after year.

Allergies pose health risks beyond stuffy noses and itchy, watery eyes. Those with intense symptoms find their quality of life drastically affected, leading to missed school and work days, or even emergency room visits. Choosing the perfect pet for your family begins with doing your homework beforehand to determine the age, size and temperament of your ideal dog or cat. Will your newest family member be an independent feline or a playful, social cat? A rambunctious, energetic dog or a laid-back lap pup? Will you fall in love with a beautiful long-haired cat or a domestic shorthair?

Will you choose a gorgeous long-coated dog or a wash-and-wear short-coat type?

Here are four questions to consider in your search for the right pet. You may find the pet chooses you.

* What is your family dynamic? Does your family have young children under the age of 7? If so, a medium- or large-sized dog or an adult cat may be a better match than a kitten or puppy or a toy or small-sized dog that could be hurt during rowdy play. Are you an older adult seeking a companion? Consider an adult cat or a lap dog.

If you choose a puppy or kitten, be prepared to educate children about safe handling. Do you have other pets? Try to find out if the cat or dog you are considering gets along with other pets. * What is your lifestyle? Do you work long hours with little time to exercise an energetic young dog? For some dogs, a short daily walk or backyard romp is ample exercise, yet others need a vigorous workout to stay conditioned and relaxed. Keep in mind that kittens and puppies require a time investment to train and help them develop into healthy, well-balanced adults. * Where do you live? Whether you live in an apartment or a house with a small- or largefenced yard factors into the type of dog you choose. A dog or cat that sheds a great deal may also impact your selection. * Why do you want a pet? Are you seeking a companion, a protector, an active dog to run with you, or a friendly dog to be a playmate with your children or other pets?

As you filter through the type of cat or dog that will work best for your family, you are halfway there to choosing a forever best friend. Life is better when you share it with a pet.

Staying Active

1. Place your hands on top of a countertop or other firm surface. Make sure to spread your fingers wide.

2. As you lower yourself toward your hands, keep your shoulder blades down and back.

3. Once you have gone as low as you can, come back up and repeat.
