Welcome to your September edition!

For everything and everyone in our lives, there is a season. Some seasons are long, some are short, but they tend to unfold as they should.

When a season comes to an end, it is almost always as it’s meant to be. My season as a Marley Park resident has recently come to an end.

We weren’t planning a move, but being in real estate, I’m sort of always considering it, and last month I came across a house that made my heart skip a beat.

Our new house is in Surprise, located on a county island, and not part of an HOA. Thankfully, it’s only five minutes from Marley Park; just three miles west off Waddell Rd. The decision to move out of Marley Park was bittersweet, but David and I are still Marley Park homeowners with two rental properties in the neighborhood, so I plan to · Open every night from 5 pm to 1 am stay involved

in the community as I always have. I will still be facilitating The Front Porch Facebook group, editing The Front Porch Magazine, planning the monthly ladies’ night out at Vogue, and managing the Marley Park Community Cares Club. I’ll still be organizing the annual Thanksgiving community pot-luck, YES, organizing the annual Santa Photo event, and you’ll still be getting the annual Christmas ornament delivered to your front porch from our family.

The past eight years living in Marley Park have been amazing. I will always be eternally grateful for our experience here and I look forward to maintaining the friendships and connections we’ve made within the community. After all, in the words of John Leonard, “It takes a long time to grow an old friend.”

On Our Cover

Twenty years ago, on September 11th, I was across the street from the World Trade Center, about to attend a programming course. I never got to take that course, but the course of my life was changed forever. As I looked up in horror at the buildings, I saw a man at a window with flames and smoke behind him. My heart sank as I watched him leap to his certain death. In that instant, I was shamed to my core at the choices I had been making in my life. You see, I was what you might call a ‘White Collar Junkie’. Cocaine and alcohol abuse were the seedy underbelly of what was a thinly veiled ‘normal’ life. I had a wife and son, a good job, and a house in the suburbs.

It looked great from the outside, but it was a house of cards. In that instant, my heart was broken open and I swore to my Creator, as well as to that man, that I would change my life and become a positive influence in the world.

Kwon Do, right alongside my son Zack. The martial arts’ tenets of self-discipline, respect, perseverance, and indomitable spirit served me well in smashing my old lifestyle paradigm and building a new, more positive and life-affirming one. Sometime later I discovered the internal martial arts; Tai Chi in particular, which I continue to practice to this day. I’ve also begun teaching and helping others to break through their own versions of negative life paradigms.

So, I’ve kept my oath to my Creator…and to that man. September 13th, 1955, was the day I was born, but September 11th, 2001, was the day I was reborn. Anyone would agree that the events of 9/11 were horribly negative, but for me, they were also excruciatingly and wonderfully enlightening because they broke me open and raised my awareness, forcing me to take a critical look at my behavior and ultimately helping me choose a path with heart and new growth.

Home Sweet Home In the current sellers’ market, many homeowners wonder what, if anything, needs to be remodeled before they list their house. Pet of the Month Winston and Wiley are lhasapoos, which is a mix of poodle and Lhasa Apso. Their birthdate is September 9, 2019. We found out our youngest son Cameron is extremely allergic to dogs that shed. We researched mixed breeds that won’t shed, and this was the breed we chose.

Originally, we only planned on getting one pup.

When we went to get a pup, we originally brought Winston home. Winston cried all night long because he had never been away from his brother. The next morning, we felt so bad for Winston that my husband went and picked up Wiley.

Winston and Wiley are inseparable. They sit together, sleep together, and wrestle together. They must be in the same room as each other or they begin looking for each other. Their favorite past times are walks, being petted, and playing with their favorite toy (old socks). Their favorite treat is cubed ice. They can sit and fetch.

Seasonal Update

If you’re new to Arizona, you might be surprised at the “lakes” that pop up in the neighborhood after a heavy rain, and you may hear people refer to the parks as “flooded.” These areas that collect water are by design and are called retention basins. In the Valley, stormwater runoff is transported by drains, streets, curbs, and open channels directly to retention basins and washes. Retention basins are effective for stormwater pollution removal and flood control and they double as expansive, often grassy, recreation areas during dry times. It’s one of the reasons our neighborhood has so many beautiful parks; many of them are also retention basins. After a summer monsoon, water-filled basins can be inviting places for children to play. Because stormwater is not treated, however, pollutants that get picked up by runoff end up in these basins, so it’s best to avoid swimming or playing directly in the water. The next time a monsoon rolls through, take a stroll on the Arbor Walk and enjoy your “waterfront property” in Arizona!

Furry Friends

Welcoming a new cat or kitten into your home is an exciting event. However, like any new experience, it can feel daunting to prepare your home for your new furry family member. Now is the peak season for finding kittens and adult cats available for adoption, as it’s the height of the kitten season. And of course, there are always wonderful adult and senior cats in need of forever homes, all year round.

Cats make excellent pets, especially for those who live in apartments or other areas with limited green space, which would be needed for a dog. Cats are also an excellent option for those with limited mobility who are in need of companionship. If you are considering opening your home to a new cat, here are some tips to help make the transition easier - both for you and for them.

1. Prep your home ahead of time Before you go to pick up your new cat or kitten, make sure you’re all set up with the appropriate supplies. Here is a quick checklist of things to do

and buy: * Crate or carrier to safely bring home your new feline friend * Food dish and appropriate food for your kitten or adult cat * Water dish * Quiet area to set up food and water * Litter box, litter scoop and litter (if you have more than one cat, supply one box per cat so they have adequate space) * Cats are very curious, so remove breakables on shelves or tables that cats could access * Make sure you have no ductwork, HVAC registers or other holes that could be hazardous or cover them up.

2. Choose a “starting room” When you first introduce your cat to their new home, pick one room to isolate them for a few days so they can slowly get used to the new sights, sounds and smells of your home. It should be the same room where their litter box is kept, so they’ll know that location from the start. Make sure to supply your new furry friend with clean water and food.

After a few days in the starting room, gradually open up more rooms of the house so your cat can explore. If you’re introducing them to other

Berry Exciting French Toast Panzanella French Toast: 2 large Eggland’s Best eggs 8 slices of thick bread 1/2 cup milk 1/4 cup Greek yogurt 2 tablespoons maple syrup 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 teaspoon almond extract 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon salt Maple Glaze: 1/4 cup confectioner’s sugar 1 teaspoon maple syrup 1/2 teaspoon milk Panzanella: 1/2 cup sliced strawberries 1/2 cup blueberries 1/2 cup raspberries 1/2 cup blackberries 1/2 cup granola 2 tablespoons sliced almonds

Directions: • In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, yogurt, maple syrup, vanilla, almond extract, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt until combined.

• Preheat oven to 400¬∞ F. • Heat a griddle pan on medium heat. Spray the griddle with cooking spray.

• Dip 4 slices of bread into the egg mixture separately then place on the griddle pan.

Cook about 4 minutes each side or until golden brown. Spray the griddle again and repeat steps with last 4 slices of bread.

• Treat large cooking sheet with cooking spray.

Cut each bread slice into large cubes. Place the bread cubes single layer on the treated pan. Lightly spray the bread cubes with cooking spray.

• Bake 10 minutes, then flip the cubes and continue baking for 5 more minutes.

• Make the glaze by mixing the confectioner’s sugar, maple syrup and milk in a small bowl.

• Using a large serving bowl, toss the bread cubes and granola. Drizzle the maple glaze and toss again until bread cubes and granola are lightly coated. Add all the berries and toss until combined. Top with almonds.

• Serve immediately.

After School

As most working American parents and students prepare to return to in-person work and school, after a year plus of remote work and virtual learning, it begs the question for parents: How prepared are you to handle not only back to school, but also back to after school?

The impact felt from COVID-19 - whether it was a change in family dynamics of a parent or caretaker’s health, employment status or housing situation - were profound. This past year, youth were faced with limited peer and leader interactions due to virtual schooling, restricted extracurricular opportunities and minimal socialization.

According to a survey conducted by Boys & Girls Clubs of America, 75% of parents report that after-school time actually causes as much or more stress than in-school time. On top of that, layer the emotional impact of COVID-19 and it makes for a nerve-wracking start to the school year.

As we look to return to in-person learning, it’s

imperative that we understand the social and emotional development associated with the 2021-2022 school year. Boys & Girls Clubs of America, an expert in youth development, is determined to send kids and teens back to school better than ever and offers these tips to help take the stress out of back-to-school season for parents this year.

Emphasize the importance of emotional development Thanks to a multi-year partnership with Kohl’s, Boys & Girls Clubs of America is implementing programming at Clubs nationwide to promote and empower social and emotional development. After a stressful school day, kids and teens need mentors and trusted adults they can turn to in order to feel supported and better learn to cope with any challenges that may have come up during the day. Working parents aren’t always readily available right after school to talk to their child, so utilizing affordable afterschool programs can alleviate stress for parents, knowing their child is with trained, trusted adults and mentors.

Create a safe space Each day 11 million children and teens leave school with no place to go, increasing their risk of being unsupervised, unguided and unsafe in communities across the country, according to a 2014 Afterschool Alliance study. And, since juvenile crime escalates during the hours of 3-7 p.m. according to the U.S. Department of Justice, parents have cause for concern about how their children spend their time during these critical hours. Parents can stay focused at work and have peace of mind that their kids are safe and on a path to success when they know their child has arrangements for supervised, afterschool care with trustworthy adult leaders.
