Welcome to your September issue!

Having lived in Marley Park since 2013, we aren’t the “new” neighbors anymore. For the first few years after we moved here, it seemed that most people we met in the neighborhood had been here longer than us, but that’s no longer the case. We’ve watched as life has taken our friends and neighbors on a variety of paths to different neighborhoods, cities, states, and sometimes even overseas. Some of these moves have been filled with emotion and tears as people we have become close to have moved away.

My husband and I host get-togethers for our kids’ school classmates and their parents twice a year; once at the beginning of the school year and again on the last day of school in May. Our oldest is in third grade now and our youngest is in first grade, so we’ve gotten to know quite a few of their friends and friends’ parents over the years. We also meet people who are new to the

school and/or neighborhood every time.

At our most recent gathering, there were several families who are new to the area, including several military families who are stationed at Luke Airforce base. As someone who grew up living in the same house in a small town in Northern Michigan from birth to adulthood (my parents sold it when I was 38), I can only imagine the challenges that our military families face as they uproot and relocate their lives and the lives of their children over and over. For those who have found homes in Marley Park, my greatest hope they feel welcomed here.

As I reflect on the ever-changing make-up of our neighborhood, I am reminded of one of my favorite quotes, by Flavia Weedn, “Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people move our souls to dance. They awaken us to a new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom. Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon. They Seasonal stay in our lives for a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same.”

If you’re moving on from Marley Park, I hope you carry with you many happy memories of your time here…and if you’re new, beat the rush reach out. I’d love to meet you!

On Our Cover

The rate of suicide is highest in middle-age white men. In 2017, men died by suicide 3.54 times more often than women. On average, there are 129 suicides per day. White males accounted for 69.67% of suicide deaths in 2017.

These are all facts I didn’t think would apply to my life or my family. Yet here I am, a widow at age 44, 8 days after my birthday, February 1, 2018. Peter was the love of my life, my soulmate.

How could I not have seen that he was in such a dark place? As spouses we’re supposed to know, or at least anticipate, every thought or feeling of our loved ones. At least that’s what I thought.

He had been keeping this secret for at least 20 years, more pressing in the last 3-5 years. He despised doctors, only choosing to see one when it was truly an emergency. That morning as I drove away from the house for my doctor’s appointment, I told myself “Today is the day I will force him to go see or talk to someone, even if that means he’s going to be terribly mad at me.” By that time, it was too late, he had already acted on his decision.

Immediately the ripple effect of his actions went into play. How could he not have known all the people who truly loved him, who would do anything to listen, help him, be there for him?

The answer is clear now, he was so deep in the rabbit hole he couldn’t see out of it to see all that was there for him.

Now over a year and four months later, I’ve had time to grieve (although that never ends) and I have to say I don’t feel what he did was selfish.

Yes, he was my only true love and I his, so I’ll just take my time living here on earth and try my best to find joy and hope. I know it will come someday, but until then I’ll do my best to be kind and take the time to truly have conversations with people and connect.

Let Grow My two older boys work for me helping run summer camps for kids in June. They divide their earnings into savings, tithe, and spending money. This year my oldest was saving for a LEGO set.

He successfully price checked, shopped alone, didn’t lose any cash, and opted for no plastic bag since he didn’t want to waste one on something he could carry.

I really liked everything he learned from this experience and everything I learned, as well.

I know letting them grow gives them the best chance at feeling confident about being a grown up and being successful, but it’s in my nature to help them do it perfectly. This often means too much micro-managing on my part which tends to make them feel like they can’t do things right.

To sit back and watch and let them learn is just as much a learning experience for me as it is for them.

After he achieved his goal, I dropped him off to do his shopping at Walmart while the rest of us waited in the car. He noticed that the LEGO set he had his eye on was cheaper at Target the last time we were there so he came back to the car empty handed and asked if we could go to Target sometime. Since our afternoon was free, we drove straight over. When He got inside Target, he found the set was, indeed, less expensive there, but ended up opting for a slightly smaller set that was also priced better at Target so he could keep some money saved for another day.

Home Sweet Home A good friend of mine has a sign in her entryway that says “This house was clean yesterday. Sorry you missed it!” It always gives me a chuckle. I enjoy visiting a “lived-in” home. I have other friends whose homes look like model homes all the time. I love both styles the same.

Spiritual Thoughts

The sun was shining brightly, but inside I was feeling as black as night. Learning anything about recent news or current events will do that to a person. I observed the world around me closely and wallowed in a deep, sinking sadness.

I despaired that humanity is painfully drifting apart from God, embracing things in life that destroy a person to their core. I wept at how we, the people, sorrowfully drifted apart from each other. We let petty and unimportant matters separate us with hatred in our hearts instead of coming together to celebrate all we have in common. People have lost touch of what is precious and sacred, allowing mass destruction and precious lives to be lost. It was enough to make me want to crawl into bed, pull the covers over my head, and disappear. I wondered what was the point of love and hope? It did not seem to make a difference in this sad existence.

My husband recently set up decorative lights in our backyard. It is astonishing the difference in the atmosphere of our backyard when they are illuminated. It makes a rather plain and ordinary

place into a thing of beauty. It transforms our small, ordinary space into a wondrous and peaceful haven.

Interestingly enough, I never turned on these lights during the daytime even with the feeling of joy they brought me. They did not have the same effect, the same splendor, as they did during the night. It took the onset of the darkness to bring out their loveliness in the most visible and powerful way.

Jesus has a special term for those who love Him and follow Him: the light. We are the light of the world. From the light of the spirit within us, we bring beauty and grace within the darkness.

I now reason I can either hide my light under a blanket, shrinking to the humanity around me, or let my light of love and grace glimmer within me, making humanity more delightful. I no longer despair over the blackness of the world anymore.

The gloomier the world, the brighter Christ’s lights will shine.

Poet’s Place Finding Jewels in Cement and Grass

Before Summer became a sweat box— ever after--my rambles became a fine scramble of sights, sounds and laughter.

Some of the parks lived up to their name and took topographical fame.

Rose garden birthed a beauty, a wonder of five years or under.

Hazel-gray eyes to break hearts in ten years, innocent smile still showed no fears, floppy hat almost half her size. “Where do you live?” she chirped like a lark, but all I could manage was to point past the park. Not missing a blink and grooming the treat, she pointed behind me, gushed, “I live across the street.”

Indulgent grandma, smiling throughout, gave me a look that spoke volumes but had to tell, “No you don’t.

You live on Waddell.”

She finally blinked, refocused and swami that I am, up to the task--

knew she would ask again, “Where do you live?”

I was enchanted, wanted to drop seventy years, continue to play and say, “ I live on the top of the jungle gym,” which was beginning to swim in the shimmering heat.

I didn’t. The spell was broken, moment had passed. Second childhoods seldom last.

An hourglass watched makes the time creep but can for the young be a memory to keep. Benches are tricky, with bird-dropped phlegm, but at a rare time the places of gems.

I hadn’t noticed while navigating a spotted seat the painted rocks, lined up and row so neat.

Not much bigger than the small bird but oval and painted--an egg to observe... different colors and one caught my eye.

I turned it over, red with black nubs, knew I was holding a lady bug.

Like a curious oldster I looked around but felt the sand trickle with no young to be found. Inanimate fortune with a life of its own and making me sorry I had ever grown.

I could go on about diamond rainbows in sprinklers, jet trails puncturing opal clouds like Cupid’s arrow, but that would narrow my life map and leisure, looking for the unexpected treasure.

Kindness Matters

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the power to turn a life around.” ~Leo Buscaglia

Human beings are unique in the sense that even though they cannot change their circumstances, they can change the world. They can change people. Kindness is one of those things that is often overlooked but has immense power.

The past two months we’ve focused on looking inward to make our thoughts kinder and to make a better effort to smile to people around us. Doing those things often make other acts of

kindness easier. These are simple things that everyone can do to be kinder.

This month I want to continue the idea of simplicity, but I want to make it a slight challenge.

I don’t have one specific challenge or one specific act of kindness, I just want everyone to do one act of kindness a day.

This could be a smile, holding the door, helping to carry groceries, writing a note, sharing a snack, playing a game with someone, etc. There are so many ways that people can show kindness for others, and many of them are simple and not time consuming. If everyone did one act of kindness a day, imagine what the results would be. People would be happier; the world would be a happier place. I want people to look at our community and think, “those are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met.”

Focusing on the little things and doing one small act of kindness everyday would drastically change people’s lives. Be proactive and show others the kindness that people can give.

Decorator’s Corner The Front Porch Facebook group for Marley Park residents was created in 2013 as an open forum for residents to share and discuss news, information, referrals, advice, and events relevant to the neighborhood and its residents. The group compliments The Front Porch magazine and allows members to get to know each other on a more informal basis as well.

If you are a member of The Front Porch group, you may have noticed that every so often there is a post asking for residents to share photos of rooms in their homes that they love. It’s fun and informative to see what others have done with the interiors of their homes, and seeing others’ creations can inspire your own ideas. The photos shared in the group are also considered for print right here in the “Decorator’s Corner” of The Front Porch magazine.

For the August issue, we are looking for rooms that match the theme “Out with the Gray, In with the Blue” as design trends are moving away from the stark gray and white of the past few years and introducing more color, specifically shades

of blue, teal, and turquoise.
