Welcome to your August edition! First, I want to send out a huge THANK YOU to Marley Park resident, Jimmy Blinn, for sharing his time and talents as our volunteer photographer for this month’s and last month’s cover photos. It is my goal to feature a different Marley Park family on the cover of The Front Porch Magazine every month. I wouldn’t be able to do it without volunteers like Jimmy who are willing to share their photography skills for the cover photos. It has been such a pleasure getting to know so many amazing Marley Park families over the

years. If you know of a resident or family who would make a good cover feature, please reach out – I’d love to connect! Speaking of photography, it’s that time of year when the first day of school pictures will start showing up on social media! I just love seeing the smiling faces of my friends’ kids standing proudly by their front doors wearing fresh uniforms or carefully selected first-day outfits. The first day of school always feels like a renewal of sorts, kind of like New Year’s Day. It’s an opportunity for a fresh start, to set new goals, to make new friends and rekindle those that paused over the summer, to try out for sports teams, or to join a new club. I can usually hear a collective sigh of relief from the parents as the kids head off for the first day…the only exception being the kindergarten moms who are holding back tears and fighting the urge to run back into the classroom for one more hug.

On Our Cover

The Holdaway family has lived in Marley Park since 2016. This year, their oldest, Lincoln, is starting high school and their youngest, Millen, is starting kindergarten. They also have Elle, who is going into 5th grade, and Dallin, who is going into 7th grade. In addition to school, Lincoln and Dallin play volleyball and soccer, Elle plays volleyball and does cheer, and Millen, who is still trying out different sports, has played basketball and soccer. All four kids also take piano lessons. Whew…I’m exhausted just writing about it! Tatum, mom, says she keeps track of the kids’ schedules through extensive lists on her notes app and the digital calendar on her phone. The family also does a lot of night-before prepping during the school year – lunches are packed, and clothes are laid out before bed to make the mornings smoother and easier. When not at school or playing sports, the Holdaway kids can usually be found hanging out in Bumblebee Park with a whole crew of neighborhood kids.

Although the neighbor kids all go to different schools…Dysart schools, charter schools, micro schools, and even homeschool…they are all friends after school and on the weekend! Tatum says the hardest part of having four kids all different ages and stages is that the younger ones still need snuggles and storytime, while the older ones need a lot of emotional support as they are starting to develop their moral compasses. It can be challenging to juggle talking to pre-teens/teens about being inclusive, standing up for what’s right, etc., while still managing the occasional temper tantrum from the little ones. The Holdaways are embracing their chaos and looking forward to a great school year. We wish the same to everyone with school-aged kids in Marley Park! Back 2 School

Back-to-school can be an exciting time of year for children who know what to expect. But for children headed off to school for the first time, the unknown can trigger worry and stress. The good news is that the separation anxiety children feel when starting school or child care is a normal part of development that can be eased through a variety of techniques. 1. Talk about any back-to-school worries Read books about going to preschool or kindergarten a few weeks before school begins to help ease the transition and encourage excitement. Once your children have been exposed to the idea of going to school, discuss any questions they have to ease their minds and make the impending experience seem more familiar. 2. Make school preparation special Buying a special outfit and shoes, finding a backpack with a favorite character on it and picking out a special comfort object from home to bring to school can all help create excited anticipation for the first day of school. Take some

time to visit the school before dropping your children off for the first time and let them meet their teachers. When you show up on the first day, your children will be more familiar with their surroundings.

3. Have everything ready the night before Avoid added morning stress by prepping the night before. If you’re packing lunch or snacks, make sure those are ready in advance. Lay out clothes, choose a hairstyle and make sure everything is tucked inside the backpack and ready to go so that your morning can be laidback and enjoyable. When your children feel your calmness from being prepared, they are more likely to be calm themselves. 4. Say a short goodbye but don’t sneak away Now that you’re ready, it’s time to nail the drop off! Confidence is key when dropping your child off for the first time. You’ll want to give a quick hug and kiss, provide assurance that they will have a good day and offer a short farewell, without lingering. But don’t sneak away! Sneaking away usually adds more anxiety into the equation. Sometimes, a child will not be OK with the drop-off, and that’s part of the process. Don’t look back, don’t turn around, just walk away confidently, and they’ll eventually adopt your attitude.

Home Sweet Home More and more Americans are concerned about a possible recession. Those concerns were validated when the Federal Reserve met and confirmed they were strongly committed to bringing down inflation and, to do so, they’d use their tools and influence to slow down the economy. This brings up many fears and questions around how a recession might affect our lives, our jobs, and business overall. Many Americans are also wondering how this will affect the housing market. We know how economic slowdowns have impacted home prices in the past, but how could this next slowdown affect real estate and the cost of financing a home? According to Mortgage Specialists, “Throughout history, during a recessionary period, interest rates go up at the beginning of the recession. But to come out of a recession, interest rates are lowered to stimulate the economy moving forward.” While history doesn’t always repeat itself, we can learn from it. While an economic slowdown needs to happen to help taper inflation,

it hasn’t always been a bad thing for the housing market. Typically, it has meant that the cost to finance a home has gone down, and that’s a good thing. Locally, we have been in an extreme sellers’ market since March of 2020, but that shifted nearly two years to the day in March of this year as the housing market started to slow. As of this publication, we are expected to be in a balanced market this month and moving into a buyers’ market by fall. While no one knows exactly what the future holds, you can make the right decision for you by working with a trusted real estate professional to get expert advice on what’s happening in the housing market and what that means for your homeownership goals. Got Your Back There are so many incredible things that can be done in a marriage or relationship that will blast it forward to the next level. Some may sound good in words but actions speak louder than words, they actually need to be DONE to make massive improvement and change.

One power statement that comes to mind is “I GOT YOUR BACK”. Reminds you of high school days with a group of great friends and one of them sees you struggling and says hey “I GOT YOUR BACK!” Instantly you no longer feel alone, the power of that statement when actually put into action is nothing short of incredible. As we get older and sometimes get burned, we stop having people’s back and it becomes each person for themselves, but what happens when we bring it back is incredible. I think back about a conversation I had with someone awhile back. This person told me how he had had a strained relationship with his brother for years. Then one day the family had a Sunday dinner and invited everyone over. The mom said to this person how difficult he was as a child and how raising him was so much work. This man’s brother, who he had a strained relationship with, spoke up and said “What are you talking about? He was the easiest child to ever raise. He never got into trouble! What you are saying makes no sense at all!” The guy and his wife were stunned that his brother went to such lengths to stick up for him. Immediately their relationship improved significantly and he was proud to tell me this story. I could hear it in his voice. So, I asked him, when did your brother do this for you? I was expecting him to say a month or two ago. Do you know what he said? 7 years ago! Yes, 7 years ago! Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

What does that mean? It means that this act had such an impact on him that he felt the need to share with me this quick event that happened so long ago.

This is just one example of how powerful it is to stand up for the ones you love and recognize how much it can do for you, them, and your relationship. Sometimes we are looking for a brand-new concept that will be the gamechanger, when in reality the gamechanger is taking something powerful that you may have already done. You may have felt it was beneficial but never made it the serious priority. Making the change now could be the catalyst that changes your life and relationships forever. There are so many things just like this that can change everything. This is a super powerful statement and more important, action, to add in your quest for a great marriage or relationship with a loved one! Submitted by Francis Ellison, of 2BU Coaching

It’s In the Air Spring, Summer and Suicide: MYTH: Suicide rates are higher around the holidays. FACT: December is the month with the lowest suicide rate. Scientists have long speculated about the cause of suicide rate increases in Spring and Summer. One theory has to do with the tons of blooms in these months that bring pollen and other allergens, which bring tons of inflammation. Inflammation has been linked to all manner of physical maladies, including everything from allergies to autoimmune illnesses to cancer. In particular, we know that the inflammation can be a catalyst for the release of chemicals related to stress and anxiety. Those with mood disorders are even more susceptible to the negative impact of this chemical release. What you may not know is that the inflammation leads to increased levels of quinolinic acid (QUIN). QUIN is a neurotoxin that causes physical and psychological problems. It is produced by activated immune cells known as microglia, which are the primary form of defense of the central nervous system. They are located throughout the brain and spinal cord and account for 10-15% of our brain cells. QUIN increases free radicals and is implicated in conditions like Alzheimer’s, autism, MS, HIV and many more. Furthermore, increased QUIN is correlated with increased depressive symptoms. It’s also elevated in the cerebrospinal fluid of people who attempt suicide. Inflammation can also affect our body’s ability to produce the brain chemical serotonin, which plays a role in anxiety and depression. The precursor for serotonin is an amino acid known as tryptophan, which is found in foods such as chicken, eggs, peanuts and turkey. At the right Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

level, serotonin can have a positive impact on our bodies and minds. When we have inflammation, though, tryptophan in our gut can turn into QUIN rather than serotonin. Submitted by Dr Jennifer Paweleck-Bellingrodt, Psy.D. Tune in next month for practical tips on what you can do to decrease inflammation.
