Welcome to your August issue! It’s here! The bittersweet month of August when, in Arizona, those of us with school-age children send them off with a simultaneous “boo-hoo” and “yahoo”! The carefree days of summer have come to an end and it’s time to get back to the routine of the school year. Our kids will be in third and first grades this year at Marley Park Elementary. If your kids attend Marley Park as well, be sure to check out the article in this month’s issue by PTA President, Sara Bauler. If you have kids attending another local school or even kids who are home schooled, please reach out if you’d like to contribute to a future issue of The Front Porch Magazine.

YOUR DREAM BACKYARD IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK

Summertime in Arizona is the best time to travel. There are lots of day-trip options to escape the heat by simply heading north to the Prescott or Flagstaff area. For those of us who are from the Midwest, it’s also a great time to visit family in the states where the summers are warm and mild. This year, our family took a trip to México to visit the two exchange students (siblings) we hosted a few years ago. Let me tell you, after being in 90° weather with 100% humidity, I am REALLY appreciating our Arizona “dry heat”!

On Our Cover

I recently attended my niece’s kindergarten promotion. The young graduates were asked the time-honored question, “What do you want to be when you grow up”? The crowd favorite was when a little boy proclaimed he wanted to be a snake hunter. Though the audience chuckled at that response, it resonated with me as I recalled my own daughter’s response to that same question in kindergarten. I’ve come to learn that dreams are limitless when you are five. Everything seems possible.

Isabella’s dreams were eventually crafted into tangible goals. When she began thinking seriously about college, she knew that she was looking at not only four years of undergraduate work but also four years of medical school. In addition, because she was the first in our family to go to college.Fortunately, Isabella had amazing local resources to support her, such as her teachers and counselors. With their help, she spent countless hours researching universities, preparing for exams, and writing college essays. She worked very hard at both academics and extracurricular activities. All the while, she never stopped dreaming.

All that hard work paid off as Isabella was accepted to Stanford University and will begin When my daughter Isabella was five, she attending this fall with a major in Human Biology confidently declared that she wanted to be a on a pre-med track. I know that many students “doctor in a surgical operating room”. I don’t end up changing their majors, and that there is know if she even knew what that meant but I was a possibility Isabella may find another passion ecstatic for her and for her dreams. she wishes to pursue. Yet if there is one thing Those aspirations never dissipated. In fact, this process has taught me, it is that the content they blossomed. She volunteered at Del E. of the dreams is not what matters. What matters Webb Hospital, attended Saturday Scrubs at most is having the courage to believe in them, the University of Arizona, and was a participant whether they lead you to become a surgeon in Mayo Clinic’s Perry Initiative. Time For A Change

Plastic has a major impact on today's society. We use it in almost everything from straws to packing material. Did you know that about half a billion plastic straws are used every day in the United States? Ever since plastic became widely used six decades ago, over 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic have been produced. According to National Geographic, about 91% of plastic in the world is not recycled. In the United States, recycling has been at only nine percent since 2012. If numbers like these continue, the problem will become worse, and much harder to stop.

This has a huge impact on our planet, especially in bodies of water like lakes, rivers, and oceans. It poisons our waters and affects the marine food chain. The chemicals found in the plastics have been found in dead marine life. According to Marine Insight, 54% of the 120 marine animals on the threatened list have eaten or become tangled in plastic.

bodies. Even if the toxic microplastics do not kill them, these poisoned marine species can be eaten by humans.

There is something we can do about it though. The best way is to reduce our use of plastic. Some of the most commonly used plastics are water bottles, bags, and straws. Water bottles could be eliminated if we all used reusable water bottles. Plastic straws can be replaced by using metal ones, or by not using them at all. Plastic bags can be replaced by using bags that are made from paper or reusable materials. Finally, you can recycle the plastic that you cannot replace. Plastic is a very widespread problem, but if people can work together, this problem can be solved. Submitted by Tyler Mollica | Marley Park Resident Tyler is working on his Boy Scout communication merit badge. He is a member of Troop 194 in Surprise.

Poet’s Place Rose Garden Park

The spot is baking, hot enough to make eyes a sandbox, throat a tunnel of rust and lungs a poor balloon filled with dust. Birds are chirping for water, thirsty twerps that can’t ruffle a feather or trill a love song. The only thrill I can find in the slow simmer of August is the frigid tune of winter, crystalline cutouts melting on my face. My pace is quicker in the twelfth month-a rabbit hopping to a habit of cold hurry and worry. But today I’m a plodding turtle, mocking seasons

and trying not to boil in my own soup.

If I could touch my head to test an ear, I hope that I wouldn’t jar out burnt sticks. If I could muster enough blink lotion in my eyes, I might even fancy a sip notion, could maybe coax a drop-but I fear that it would evaporate. Parched reader, if you should fret about the tired traveler who is now shade hopping to his purpose and avoiding surface to surface, swampy stuff,

I have enough water to get me home-but still with sufficient spunk to sweat out a teaser: do I have enough space to bunk in my freezer? So farewell Rose Garden Park. I left a mark, by and by, but I fear that it will soon dry. Submitted by Terry R. Thomas | Marley Park Resident

Community Cares The Marley Park Community Cares Club is a heartwarming organization that supports Marley Park residents during their time of need. Some of those situations could be a hospitalization, deployment or redeployment of military family members, birth or adoptionof a child, etc. The members of the Community Cares Club setup a process where Marley Park residents can volunteer to provide meals and comfort to the family during their time of need.

going in our community.

When a new baby is welcomed into a family, residents have the option of having an adorable, five-foot wooden stork placed in their front yard to announce their joyous arrival. The stork also helps fellow residents find the home when they volunteer to bring meals to the family! The Marley Park Community Cares Club is looking for a volunteer to setup the stork when a newborn arrives in our community. Bill Adams, who has volunteered countless hours setting up and removing the storks for many years, will be moving this fall. While Bill is irreplaceable, the position of“Stork Deliverer” will need to be filled in order to keep this fun and meaningful tradition

As the chairperson of the Marley Park Community Cares Club, I have had the pleasure of working with Bill for many year. When he moves, this fall, Bill is hoping to leave this important volunteer position in good hands.

Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

Bill says that this volunteer role is “A gratifying and exciting job because families are thrilled to get the stork placed in their front yard to announce the arrival of their newborn.” The stork is also available to anyone in Marley Park who is adopting a child of any age.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact me at 602-740-2313, via email at Christie@ AZLifestyleTeam.com, or via Facebook messenger. Thank you for your consideration! Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident

Home Sweet Home We’ve all heard the saying “life takes unexpected turns.” When it comes to real estate, those unexpected turns can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be that way. If you’ve been offered a job transfer, an opportunity to move closer to family, or are being relocated by the military, you might be suddenly worried about selling your home. The thought of making your home show-ready while simultaneously packing for a big move can be overwhelming. You might be thinking you’ll need to rent a place in your new area because you won’t be able to sell your current home in time to qualify for another purchase.

While these concerns are valid, there is a simple solution. Start by speaking to an experienced local REALTOR® who works closely with cash buyers, often called “iBuyers”. A good agent will sit down with you, seek to understand your unique scenario, and help you determine what is truly in your best interest. With iBuyer, you will be able to close quickly, choose your closing date, and be free to start shopping for another home in your new location knowing your current home is under contract as a cash sale. An iBuyer transaction typically comes with “service fees”

10 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

that can range from 6%12% of the sale price. An experienced agent will provide a comparative spreadsheet outlining the fees of each offer received against the commissions and closing costs estimated for a traditional sale. Your estimated net proceeds can then be weighed against the potential additional expenses involved in renting, moving costs, storage fees, etc., as well as mortgage payments, HOA fees, utilities, and on-going maintenance while you wait for a traditional financed buyer to close escrow. If a traditional sale is in your best interest, your trusted agent will certainly be able to assist with that. If an iBuyer sale is the best route for you, however, then an agent who works closely with cash buyers will be able to represent your best interest throughout the transaction at NO COST to you. Safe Routes

August is an important month to review the ways to keep our kids safe to and from school. For those of you with children attending Marley Park Elementary, remember that the design supports a walking school. The developer intentionally engineered our streets to provide a small town feel and to slow traffic. The speed limit on Sweetwater is 30mph and is 25mph on residential streets like Whisperwood. Sweetwater is also a single lane road. According to MPES administration, the school has an agreement with the City of Surprise to allow cars to line up along Sweetwater in the afternoon for dismissal, but drivers must remain in their cars. MPES also worked closely with several city and state agencies to complete a “Safe Routes to School” study which helped them create procedures for arrival and dismissal.

bicycle lane. You may park in either of the two lots for Heritage Park or at the Heritage Club. The Safe Routes study showed that if everyone works together in a safe manner, the school can dismiss 1100 students in twelve minutes! Please talk with your students about appropriate behaviors to and from school. Students should cross Sweetwater only at the marked crosswalk with the help of the school’s excellent team of crossing guards, or they may use the tunnel at the park. Never cross directly to or from the park across the Sweetwater median. If you have concerns about traffic issues or student safety be sure to contact the school’s administration and help them work toward solutions. The same is true if your students attend Legacy, Rancho Gabriela, Imagine, or any of the other nearby schools. If procedures change and a teacher or police officer asks you to move your car, take a deep breath and remember that the change has to do with everyone’s safety.

If you drive to pick up your student from MPES, please join the dismissal line on Sweetwater. While the pick-up line can overflow to the east on Sweetwater, vehicles cannot park in the street in front of the school or the park, blocking the

Back To School Back-to-school season is here and your child is probably getting excited about shopping for new supplies and being able to see their school friends. And, while education is an essential part of growing up, other factors like waking up earlier in the morning and completing tasks are also important, as they help develop an organized lifestyle and further a child’s growth. Routine establishes many aspects of healthy living, good habits and good behavior that can make a huge difference in a child’s day-to-day life. Below are some tips on developing a routine for your child: • Post a list of nighttime and morning to-dos on your child’s bedroom door or on the kitchen refrigerator as daily guidelines for your children. • Have a daily to-do list posted in an area your child will see each day. • Choose an area in the home, such as by the front door, to store your child’s school • bag and any supplies he or she may need

• • • • • • •

for school (e.g., art projects, thank-you notes/gifts for teachers). • Be sure to discuss the highlights and events that happened at school with your child each day. • Help your child prepare for school the night before, including assisting your child in selecting clothes to wear for school. After a while, he or she will be able to do this without your assistance. Give your child a bedtime on school nights and on weekends. Read a bedtime story to your child each night. Have your child utilize an alarm clock in their room to wake up on time. Designate a time each night that your child should go to sleep. Children need 9 to 11 hours of sleep each night, depending on their age.

• Practicing a regular schedule creates a day with structure. The repetition of routines encourages your child’s memory development, and the consistency helps develop healthy habits for their entire life. Submitted by Nicole Bigham, of The Goddard School

Back To Basics

“I think most of us intuitively understand how important the fundamentals are. It is just that we sometimes get distracted by so many things that seem more enticing.” - Dieter Uchtdorf

We all want to be Brooks Koepka, LeBron James, or Tom Brady. We want to be advanced. Expert. Big league. Unfortunately, with nutrition, this mindset can get us into trouble. It is tempting to want the next shiny thing. A new diet, a superfood, or a cure-all supplement. When it comes to our nutritional health however, it is not about the next shiny trick. It is about the fundamentals. It is about consistent action, done over time that makes the difference.

That’s an impressive list, especially for a habit that costs you nothing. It seems easy, but if you have tried it, you know it usually isn’t. So, what can we do to slow ourselves down?

Set your intentions - Remind yourself before each meal and snack that you want to eat slowly. Have a goal in mind. 20 minutes is a reasonable goal to work toward. Focus on gratitude. Chew fully and taste all the flavors - Some say, “Chew your food to a paste.” Put down your utensils - This could be to talk, listen, observe, think, laugh, or breathe. Avoid distractions - Technology leads to mindless, fast eating. Make it a contest - Pick a slow eater, perhaps your picky child, and let them finish first.

The temptation is to write off this fundamental because it seems too elementary. Koepka, Today, I want to give you one fundamental that LeBron, and Brady don’t write off the you can practice no matter who you are or what fundamentals. In fact, they do them better than you eat. This fundamental, when practiced over everybody else. Give eating slowly a try for two time, could be the most foundational fundamental weeks. You’ll be grateful you did. Here’s to the of nutrition. Be Kind

I believe that we have all the power needed to create a better world; it’s in us. Having kinder thoughts is just the first step of the journey. Like last month, I would like to focus on looking inward, so in the future we can look outward. To do this, this month’s challenge is to smile. Smiling is a great way to help vanquish someone’s fears, doubts, and worries. Smiling brightens someone’s day, brings joy, and restores peace. One of my favorite movies is Elf. I love to watch it with my family every holiday season. In the movie, Buddy, the main character, says the following, “I just like to smile, smiling is my favorite.” No matter how silly the quote is, we can all learn a valuable lesson from it. Buddy’s contagious smile and lighthearted personality eventually win over his dad, a major Scrooge. Smiling can do more than people know.

Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

No one thinks that if you want to change the world you start by smiling, but that’s just it, the small things start a chain reaction to the big things. It all starts with a smile. As we are starting a new school year, it is a perfect opportunity to put this message into play. Smile. Smile. Smile. It will do wonders. Not only does it make others feel better, it will brighten your day as well. Smiling does change lives. It doesn’t just have to be a Christmas miracle; it can be a year-round miracle. “A smile is the prettiest thing you can wear.” -Unknown Remember to share your experiences in The Front Porch group on Facebook with #KindnessMatters. The Front Porch Facebook group for Marley Park residents was created in 2013 as an open forum for residents to share and discuss news, information, referrals, advice, and events relevant to the neighborhood and its residents.

The group compliments The Front Porch magazine and allows members to get to know each other on a more informal basis as well. If you are a member of The Front Porch group, you may have noticed that every so often there is a post asking for residents to share photos of rooms in their homes that they love. It’s fun and informative to see what others have done with the interiors of their homes, and seeing others’

creations can inspire your own ideas. The photos shared in the group are also considered for print right here in The Front Porch magazine. For the September issue, we are looking for rooms that match the theme “Out with the Gray, In with the Blue”. Next time you step back to admire a room in your home, please consider sharing it on the Decorator’s Corner post in The Front Porch Facebook group. If you are not a Facebook user, photos may also be emailed to Christie@AZLifestyleTeam.com.
