Welcome to your July issue! Well, summer in Arizona is officially half over… at least for those of us with school age children. It’s always so exciting when school is out, but by the time July rolls around, I’m looking forward to getting back into the school routine again! Just think, it will soon be time to start shopping for school supplies, uniforms and clothes, and new backpacks! Before you shift gears into the school year though, be sure to enjoy the Independence Day festivities in Marley Park and greater Surprise this coming week, plus three more weeks of solid SUMMER! July is a great time to get out of town and away from our triple-digit temperatures. There are
YOUR DREAM BACKYARD IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK
some great local day trips that offer refreshing ways to cool off. Lake Pleasant is just minutes away, is a great place to swim, and offers reasonably priced kayak rentals as well. Fossil Creek is just a 2.5 hour drive northeast and is an amazing hidden gem in the desert with crystal clear, cool, spring-fed waters (see article in last month’s issue or contact me for more information). Tubing on the Salt River is another fun get-away that can be done as a day trip. We are going on a Saturday in August if you’d like to join us! Although it’s hot, I encourage you to get outside and enjoy everything our beautiful state has to offer, even if that means sitting on your front porch with a good book as the sun sets. After all, in the words of Sam Keen, “Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability.” As always, see you on The Front Porch!

On Our Cover
As a military family, Independence Day is one of our favorite holidays of the year. We get the chance to enjoy the day celebrating what families before us fought so hard to have, FREEDOM. We moved to Arizona in May 2016 when Ryan, an Aircrew Egress Systems Mechanic, received orders from the Air Force. Coming from a small, VERY green town in Vermont to Glendale, Arizona was a bit of a culture shock but as soon as we began looking for a house, Marley Park was the only community that made us feel like we had a little bit of home. The lush green strips and sidewalks bordered with trees reeled us in looking for more. Since we have been here, we frequent the pool and parks, having two small children. The events held at the Heritage Club never disappoint. I love how our community is so kid friendly. We do not do much without our children because we want them to experience just as much as we
do. Our neighborhood is wonderful, but even better than that are the friends we’ve made with our neighbors in Storybook Park. We’ve made forever friends, which as a military family can be hard when you’re in one place for such a short time. This year we look forward to again joining our friends along Founders Park Boulevard to watch Marley’s annual Fourth of July Parade. It may be small, but it’s packed with pride for our country. To see all the flags waved high with bright smiles, makes every sacrifice made totally worth it. I wish every single one of our Marley families a very happy Independence Day. I’m so proud to be a part of this amazing community and most of all an American! Submitted by Suzanne Bumpus | Marley Park Resident

Time For A Change
If you would humor me, I want you to think about one are in your life you would like to change. Got it? Now, how do you go about making that change? After all, if it were easy, you probably would have made it already.
exact it may deter you from continuing. It should take you no more than 5-10 minutes each day. There are plenty of apps to choose from or write down everything you eat on paper or in the notes on your phone. The key is to log EVERYTHING, even that handful of M&M’s you grabbed as you ran out the door.
While there are numerous ways to bring about positive change in your life, I will share the most powerful one I have found. What is it? Accountability.
2. Share your log. Share your log, daily, with at least one person. Want to increase the effectiveness of this strategy even more? Send your log to a person you do not want to let down.
A study by the American Society of Training and Development (ASTD) found the probability of completing a goal if:
Ideas: A. Text a friend your log each day. They can send you theirs, too. B. Start or join a social media group where you share your logs. C. Hire a coach. D. Share it with me if you want! Seriously: mark. flancbaum@gmail.com
You have an idea or goal = 10% You consciously decide you will do it = 25% You decide when you will do it = 40% You plan how you will do it = 50% You commit to someone you will do it = 65% You have a specific accountability appointment with a person you have committed to = 95% 95 percent? I’ll take those odds any day. Accountability is the secret to all great recovery programs, businesses, schools, and habits. We cannot do it alone. Nor should we. So, how does this play out practically in nutrition? Pretty easily actually.
It’s really that simple. I have seen the power of this in my own life and in the lives of the clients I coach. Try it out. I think you’ll be grateful you did. Submitted by Mark Flancbaum | Marley Park Resident

Momspiration I would like to introduce you to an amazing mother named Jany. Jany is a mother to 3 kids and a nana to 10! She was a stay at home mom for her children while supporting her husband as he went through college, med school, residency, and established his medical practice. To Jany, that was one of her biggest accomplishments. She believes she and her husband both learned so much during this time and supporting him through his schooling was a huge accomplishment for her.
Jany has been through all the stages of motherhood that I have broken down as new mom, kid mom, teen mom, empty nester, and Nana. I wanted to know what Jany learned about each one of these stages, and here is what she said: New Mom; There is life after motherhood. You will sleep again one day and be fit again too. Don’t shame your body because it is beautiful and has gone through an amazing process of creation. Kid Mom; Your kids need the same things you
Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
do, to be listened to, loved, treated like real people. Don’t put your life on hold though. If you don’t reserve something left for you, you are empty, and your kids need a whole mom.
Teen Mom; Don’t compare yourself to other moms. If you don’t do things the same way as other moms, that’s ok. If your teens make bad choices, that doesn’t mean you’re a bad mom. Empty Nester; My kids had 18 years with me. I had to trust I taught them and guided them during those years and trust they would be ok. Nana; The love of a grandchild feels different than the love of your kids. It can feel even deeper sometimes. There’s freedom in being a grandma. It’s like guiltless mothering because you can give advice but it’s up to their parents to teach and raise them. Jany’s main advice to mothers was to stop creating this idea of perfectionism. She said we have made this idea up somewhere along the way and it just brings shame and guilt. Let all that go. She asks that we all just love ourselves and the hard work we do as mothers. Home Sweet Home Chances are, you’ve received a call, text, or email…or all of the above recently from a quick sale investment company offering to buy your home. These companies, also known as “iBuyers” promise a competitive cash offer with a flexible closing date and the convenience of selling your home without the need to stage it or deal with multiple showings from potential buyers. There are many instances where selling your home to an iBuyer may make sense, but if it’s something you’re considering, I encourage you to speak to a licensed local REALTOR® before deciding. Even if you’ve already received a written offer from an iBuyer, it’s a good idea to have a local REALTOR® review it and help you determine if it’s close to fair market value. A good agent will also be able to help you compare the costs involved between a traditional sale and an iBuyer sale, which typically includes a “service charge” ranging from 6-12% of the price. The offer may be fair, but if the fees you’re being charged outweigh the typical fees involved in a traditional sale, your net proceeds could be significantly less.
10 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
It’s important to seek out an agent who works closely with the largest home buyers in Arizona. After weighing your options, if you decide that accepting an investor offer is the best choice for your circumstances, an agent who works closely with iBuyers will, in many cases, be able to represent your best interests throughout the transaction at NO cost to you. This is because most iBuyer will pay referral fees to the agents they work with, allowing you to benefit from representation without having to pay for it yourself. Should you end up deciding that selling via the traditional market is in your best interest, an experience local REALTOR® will also be able to help facilitate that for you by providing state-of-the-art marketing, including a staging consultation, professional interior and exterior photos, aerial photography of your home and lot, a high-resolution walk-through video, and a 3D virtual tour. Either way, you owe it to yourself to explore ALL your options before making a decision. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | REALTOR® | Arizona Lifestyle Team | HomeSmart

Scouting
Surprise Troop 194 is headed north this summer to Camp Geronimo. Located near Payson, Geronimo sits at the base of the Mogollan Rim. Scouts can enjoy merit badge classes ranging from first aid and wilderness survival to shooting sports, cooking, aquatics and nature amongst the beautiful Ponderosa Pines. Last summer, the troop spent a week in California at Camp Oljato. Scouts were able to experience water skiing, canoeing, sailing and motor boating. Summer 2020, 11 scouts and leaders will head to the Northern Tier high adventure camp in Ontario to conquer an 8-day canoe trek through the Canadian wilderness. Scouts will explore the beauty of Quetico Provincial Park as they work their way through sparkling lakes, winding rivers, dense forests and wetlands, passing trapper cabins, gold mines and WWII POW camps.
Each of these camp experiences involve months of planning, physical preparation and fundraising. If you see a group of people walking through Marley Park carrying backpacks, wave and say hello. That’s the Northern Tier crew preparing for their adventure. You may have also seen us selling sno-cones at the Star-Spangled Banner Celebration in June or spaghetti at the Veterans Day Dinner. This month we’ll be serving pancakes for a $5 minimum donation per person at the Marley Park Heritage Club on July 4th from 7:30 – 10:00a.m. This event is open to the public, so please join us! The summer camp experience develops a love of the outdoors and an appreciation for our natural world. It gives scouts opportunities to build independence, try new things and learn skills that help them grow as young adults. These fundraisers make it possible for our scouts to attend summer camp. Your support at these events is much appreciated. Submitted by Tina Mollica | Marley Park Resident

Kindess Matters “All action results from thought, so it is the thought that matters.” ~Sai Baba
Last month, we focused on family. I wanted to make sure that before we do kind deeds out in our community, we need to show kindness to those we are around most often. Even when it seems like they are the most annoying people on the planet, they need reminders of our love, shown through small acts. As I found myself having more patience for my siblings and parents, I also noticed that I was more appreciated, and all members of my family had more love for each other. We spent more time together and we felt our love grow as time went on. I am thankful that we worked on our family units, to show love and affection to those we live with. Sometimes, I would find myself thinking, they know I love them, I don’t need to do that favor for them. However, I would remember the challenge and have renewed vigor to help my loved ones. This month I want to focus on something that many people don’t think are acts of kindness,
thoughts. Thoughts are what drives a person to do the things they do. If someone thinks nasty or jealous thoughts toward those around them, they will most likely not do kind acts. I would like us to all try and only think nice, uplifting, positive thoughts. I know that sometimes it’s hard, like if someone isn’t kind to us, but like the quote above, we must show people more love than they deserve in order to show kindness to those around us. This month’s challenge is as simple as making a habit of seeing the good in people, and to only think kind thoughts about them or about the world. Even if sometimes life gives you reasons to be negative or if something isn’t going your way, do your best and try to be positive. Remember to share your experiences in The Front Porch group on Facebook with #KindnessMatters. Submitted by Olivia Black | Age | Marley Park Resident

Grandma’s Recipe Box
I have my grandmother’s old recipe box full of recipes that she collected throughout her life. I think most of them are from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. I’ve decided that we’re going to pick one recipe per month and give it a try. We started with “Sunshine Slush.” It seemed appropriate now that we are into triple-digit temperatures. The original hand-written recipe is in the photo above; I had to ask my mom to help me decipher some of the handwriting!
14 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
Sunshine Slush: 3 c water – 1 c sugar 2 ripe bananas, cut up 24 oz unsweetened pineapple juice 12 oz frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed 12 oz frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed 2 T lemon juice 1 ½ c light rum or vodka (optional) 1 liter carbonated water
July 2019
In saucepan, combine water and sugar, bring to a boil for three minutes, then cool. Meanwhile, in blender combine banana and half of the pineapple juice. Stir blended juice into cooled syrup, then stir in remaining pineapple juice, orange juice and lemonade concentrates, and lemon juice. If you decide to try this recipe, here are some tips: • Use a BIG pot. The full recipe is about a gallon. • We didn’t freeze ours. The kids wanted to try it right away, so we mixed the juice mixture 1/1 with the carbonated water and served it over ice. They loved it! • Unless you’re serving immediately to a crowd, don’t add the carbonated water to the mixture. Keep it separately in the refrigerator and serve 1/1 with the juice mixture over ice or toss it in the blender with the frozen mixture when you’re ready to serve it.
Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
• If you choose to make it an adult beverage, you can add that later too...or add it to half and keep half separate for the kids to enjoy. Just be sure to label the containers! • It’s REALLY sweet. If we make this again, I think we’ll skip the added sugar and just use plain water with the fruit/juice. It’s got plenty of natural sugar. • You could try variations with strawberries, raspberries, etc. • We used mason jars to freeze the leftovers. (We have a blender that fits a mason jar so it will be easy to blend with the carbonated water later.) If you use glass jars, be sure to leave room for expansion! Enjoy!
