Welcome to your June edition! June is National Great Outdoors Month and National Camping Month. Did you know that eight of our Arizona State Parks have cabins available for rent? June is a great time to get out of the heat of the Valley and spend a few nights at one of Arizona’s amazing State Parks. Of the State Parks that have cabins available, six of them have lakes where you can enjoy swimming, kayaking, or fishing.
The cabins are reasonably priced and are a great in-between for those who enjoy camping but prefer to sleep on a mattress with air conditioning! A few years ago, David and I took the kids to Lyman Lake State Park for spring break. Our cabin was only a few years old and had a queen size bed for us and bunk beds separated by a door for the kids. It had a microwave and a mini fridge, but we still did most of our cooking outside on the grill, over a fire, or with our portable propane stove. We took our kayaks with us and ventured across the lake to Ultimate Petroglyph Trail where we were able to see an assortment of rock art images pecked into boulders along the shore of Lyman Lake. To check out the Arizona State Parks with cabins available, visit AZStateParks.com/cabins. If you decide to go, I’d love to hear about your adventures! After all, in the words of Jennifer Pharr Davis, “The people who choose to spend time outdoors are not running away from anything; we are returning to where we belong.” See you on The Front Porch!

On Our Cover
Marley Park is the only home I’ve ever known. We moved into our first MP home a month before my first birthday. I just celebrated my 10th birthday party in the neighborhood last month with all my friends. My first two friends were through our new neighbors. They came to my first birthday party at the pool house. They were both Luke Families and have since been relocated. My mom and I joined a preschool play group when I was three. Most of those kids were at my third birthday party at our house on Dreyfus.
Then, like so many in the neighborhood, we moved into our 2nd MP home. We needed more room for my grandparents to live with us. I started a neighborhood preschool. I love seeing Mrs Amanda around the neighborhood. My parents decided to homeschool me starting in Kindergarten. It hasn’t negatively affected my friend group because we attend so many MP events and because the neighborhood is so friendly. I joined Girl Scouts in kindergarten and my Troop has our meetings at the Clubhouse. We have done community service in the neighborhood and throughout Surprise. We have collected trash in our parks, walked in the neighborhood 4th of July Parade, cleaned the route afterwards, and built the Buddy Bench at the MP Elementary school playground.
I have had many more birthday parties, most of them at the pool house. Neighborhood parties and events are the best. My favorite are Boo Bash and Photos & Cookies with Santa. I also love walking around to see all the luminarias and lights. Now we are the ones moving. I am excited about the new adventures we will have as we change to country life and begin travelling. But I am sad too! I have so many great memories here; park playdates, pool parties, splash pads, walking and biking around MP, walking my dog, and all the great events. But I will miss my friends the most. They say home is where the heart is! I think it’s true because home is where mom, dad, my dog Mellow and I are together. But I believe I will always think of Marley Park as home. And I think MP will always be with me. Submitted by Zoe O’Leary, Age 10 | Marley Park Resident

Furry Friends Welcoming a new pet brings such joy; having to say goodbye, can break your heart. Rainy, our Boston Terrier, moved to Marley Park with us in June 2020 from Washington. At almost 13 years old, she adjusted well—better than we did—as it was the hottest summer on record. She made the transition smoothly from grass to turf. And while she still enjoyed short walks, she began to show signs of her age. Then came the scariest day of our lives. Rainy always maneuvered around our pool like an acrobat on a tightrope. However, a few months ago, she walked right into the water. My husband threw himself down, lifted her out, and wrapped her in blankets for a long time before she stopped shaking. We knew that things would never be the same. Rainy was not the “puppy” she once was.
I asked our veterinarian how I would know when it was “Rainy’s time.” She kindly mentioned a group called “Lap of Love,” which are veterinarians and pet hospice workers that come to your home. After much prayer, we called Lap of Love, and made an appointment to talk. As Rainy declined, we decided on the day and sent a note to our close friends and neighbors. Many stopped over to give Rainy a hug (and us!). We followed the Lap of Love’s suggestion to make a “Bucket List,” taking Rainy for a ride with the window down, sharing an ice cream, and giving her two pork chops for dinner. When the morning came, she was on my lap with her favorite blanket. Dr. Danielle—an emergency vet for nine years before joining Lap of Love— waited patiently until we were ready, and the process was peaceful and unrushed. Dr. Danielle then made a plaster paw print, tucked Rainy gently in a purple blanket, and placed her in a little basket that my husband carried out to her car. Afterward, several neighbors stopped by with flowers and cards, reminding us how special Rainy was and how grateful we are for this wonderful community! Legal Advice HEALTH CARE POWERS OF ATTORNEY
The medical healthcare power of attorney identifies an agent, such as a trusted family member or friend, who can give consent to medical treatment if you cannot. If insurance requires transfer to a skilled nursing facility before going home from the hospital, your agent can arrange that for you. Different from other states, the Arizona allows you to authorize your health care agent to follow your instructions for burial or cremation. Otherwise, when there is no surviving spouse, all of the children or other family members may have to be consulted.

Home Sweet Home Life events can have a major impact on what you need from your home, and retirement is one of the biggest changes many of us face. This period of your life can mean doing more of the things you enjoy, like traveling, visiting with loved ones, or taking on new hobbies. But what does that mean for your home? If you’re looking for ways to focus more on the important things in your life, the answer could be downsizing. A recent article from The Balance talks about why it could be a great option, saying: “There are many reasons to buy a smaller home—or to downsize from your present home—but sometimes, the idea that “less is more” is what propels homeowners to buy a smaller home.” The 2022 Home Buyers and Sellers Generational Trends from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) provides more information on why people of retirement age choose to move. It shows the need for a smaller home, the desire to be closer to loved ones, and retirement itself as three of the top reasons homebuyers over the age of 55 make a move. If you’re in this group, changing priorities may be top of mind for you today, and that could be driving your decision to downsize.
After all, as your lifestyle changes, what you need in your home likely changes, too.
Home equity plays a big role when you sell your existing house and move. It could be a great tool to use to help you downsize. As home prices rise, your equity does, too. So, you may have more equity than you realize because of the record levels of home price appreciation over the past year. Those equity gains could allow you to make a larger down payment on your next home. And putting more money down can lead to a smaller monthly mortgage payment, which can give you greater financial freedom. It can also be a significant help in navigating today’s competitive housing market, since offering more money up front could help your offer stand out. Whatever your homeownership goals are, a trusted real estate advisor can help you to find the best option for your situation. They’ll help you sell your current home and guide you as you buy your next one and enter this new phase of life. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | REALTOR® | REAL Broker

Keep Moving If you’re coping with pain, such as joint pain caused by osteoarthritis (OA), you may feel like you’ve been sitting out on life. Pain can make you reluctant to participate in activities that you enjoy and miss out on connecting with those you love. But experts will tell you that if you can move, even just a little more than you do now, you will reap benefits well beyond the physical.
• Join a community centered around movement Whether it’s an exercise class, yoga center or walking club, getting together with others who are also focusing on their well-being can be encouraging and even fun. • Warm up first, and cool down after exercise. • Don’t sit out on life.
“Movement is not just a powerful and effective tool for pain management,” says personal trainer Pete McCall, NASM-CPT, PES. “Movement also brings people together. ”
If you see an opportunity to try a new sport, join a dance class, go on a nature hike or participate in a charity walking event - say “yes” to movement. Not only could it help relieve some of your pain, but it will make you feel that sense of connection to others that will boost your mood and encourage you to keep going on your wellness journey.
But how can you start, especially if you’ve been sedentary for a while? Here are tips for increasing your activity level to help with pain management and feel more connected with others.
“You may be surprised by where movement can take you,” says McCall. “I’ve never had a client say they regret getting started - only that they wish they’d started sooner.”
• Start with low-impact exercise. Walking, swimming and biking are all low-impact exercises that are easier on your joints - and that you can do with other people.

Staycation
Picture this: You’re floating in the pool, enjoying some relief from the heat while lunch is sizzling on the grill. You hear soft music, the gentle sound of sprinklers splashing and your kids getting along (finally). You could swear you’re on a vacation miles away from home but believe it or not, you can have it all in your own backyard. With gas prices expected to remain high throughout the summer, many people are looking to spend their time off closer to home. Therefore, it’s important to take all the necessary steps to turn your home into a “Staycation Station” this season. Big Lots has prepared an outdoor fun guide to make your backyard the envy of the neighborhood at a fraction of the price of a beach trip. Here’s what you’ll need: 1. A place to stay cool No in-ground pool? No problem. You’ll need something refreshing to soak in this summer, and
all the better if it’s only temporary. Try a quickset portable pool for adults to float and swim in and a smaller one with interactive elements like a bounce house or fountains to make a big splash with the youngest members of your family. 2. Fashionable, fun floats and accessories Don’t forget to purchase enough floats to go around. Other pool toys to consider are inflatable ones like floating basketball hoops, volleyball nets and beach balls, and sinking rings, sharks or mermaids. 3. Gear for competitive water battles Dry land also holds potential for loads of water fun. Stock up on some rapid-filling water balloons and host an impromptu battle. Another great way to cool off without a pool is on a water slide. 4. A place to gather and lounge Aim for a full staycation experience by setting up a comfy space to hang out while you grill out all day long. A cooler packed with drinks next to some inviting chaise lounges or a full patio set surrounding a fire pit will take your backyard summer vacation to the next level.

Home Insurance Much of the country is still in the middle of a red-hot real estate market. Home values are rising due to high demand and first-time homebuyers should be aware of how the value of their home impacts the way their premiums are calculated. Location and structure type are two examples of considerations that can affect home insurance premiums, but so do the features of the home, policy limits, and, in some states, even a homeowner’s personal finances. Policyholders should be aware of the variables that are factored into their insurance coverage. Location Location is perhaps the largest component when it comes to the costs of your insurance premium since it deals with exposure and hazard to the home’s physical structure. The type of home you have, where you live and the state or city in which you reside can drastically affect how much you will pay. In fact, location is such a primary factor that coverage in certain areas may require special policies. For example, homeowners living in or near large urban areas may find that their
premiums cost more due to the higher cost for construction or repairs. Replacement cost
The more your home costs to replace, the more you will need in coverage to insure it. “Replacement cost is a measure of the amount it would cost to replace or rebuild your home after a loss with a similar home of like kind and quality,” said Bonnie Lee, Mercury Insurance vice president of property claims. “This amount takes into account factors such as the square footage of your home, the local construction costs per square foot, and construction details unique to your home.Replacement costs and market value are often used interchangeably, but they are two completely different concepts. Market value accounts for how the neighborhood and its conveniences impact a property’s attractiveness to buyers, while replacement costs only refers to the expense of rebuilding a home after a loss,” Deductible The insurance deductible is one of the most important parts of a homeowners policy and plays a significant role when determining insurance premiums. The deductible is the amount of money a policyholder must pay before the policy pays out for repairs or a loss. Homeowners that pay a higher deductible may decrease the cost of their premiums, but may have to pay more out of pocket when filing a claim. Home insurance premiums are calculated based on a number of factors that homeowners should take into consideration when researching the best coverage for their needs at a reasonable cost.

You’re probably familiar with therapy dogs but did you know that time spent with therapy cats provides scientifically proven emotional benefits as well? Therapy animals have been shown to decrease levels of general anxiety and alleviate symptoms of depression. Cats in general make ideal therapy animals and are a great alternative to therapy dogs. Plus, their smaller size and affinity for sitting on laps and cuddling can make them a good option for quieter environments and people who have limited mobility.
While everyone has experienced the emotional toll of recent world events, seniors have been especially impacted due to extended periods of isolation and increased loneliness. Therapy animal visits play a crucial role in helping during times of hardship. Therapy animals, including therapy cats, can especially comfort those with dementia, promoting socialization and engagement, and decreasing depression, anxiety and irritability in seniors. Time spent with cats can be a stimulating and highly engaging form of therapy - boosting

mental health and enhancing one’s sense of well-being. And while nothing replaces the emotional connection of petting a cat, research by Pet Partners also reveals that even engaging with virtual pet content can still be impactful. Pet Partners therapy cat handler Tracy Howell has seen firsthand the impact therapy cat visits can have. “During my time as a therapy cat handler volunteer, we have had the opportunity to visit locations from nursing facilities and assisted living centers, to Children’s Hospitals and universities,” said Howell about her cats Roger and Sal. “Cats have the unique ability to draw people out like no other interactions can. During a visit to a senior living facility, we were with a group of seniors who were taking turns petting Roger when a woman came up and joined the group and said she liked cats. A nurse later told me that the woman had never joined the group before or spoken much to anyone there!” To learn more about the healing power of cats, how you can get involved, and how Cat Chow is helping, visit CatChow.com/therapy.

Sunday Blues Do you sometimes find yourself feeling less than optimistic as your weekend draws to a close each Sunday? If so, you’re far from alone. Stats recently published on Inc.com indicate 81% of workers have experienced the “Sunday scaries” in anticipation of the work week ahead. Still, it’s important to fend off those encroaching feelings and preserve the quality of your Sunday afternoon. In that spirit, here are five suggestions to help energize your Sunday. • Be intentional about weekend plans. Plan ahead so you spend your weekend time doing what you really need or want to do instead of simply waiting for things to unfold. Fulfilling your plan can help you feel more in control, ward off procrastination, provide a sense of accomplishment and eliminate any sense of having “wasted” your weekend. • Incorporate activities you love. Spend part of your weekend doing something you enjoy. It’s all too easy to get caught up in activities you feel you have to do that you never have time for the things that give you pleasure.
• Maintain a cheerful environment. Make sure your physical living area is neat, clean, well-lit and boosts your energy. A little scent therapy in the form of a candle, room spray or plug-in oil can be the mood boost. • Consider disconnecting from your phone and computer. Keep thoughts of work from encroaching on your weekend psyche by unplugging from your screens until Monday morning. Protect your mental and emotional space from the stress of the working world and focus on self-care instead. • Prioritize sleep and eating habits. Disregarding your normal patterns on the weekends - perhaps by skipping meals, overindulging in junk food, failing to stay hydrated or staying up until the wee hours - can easily backfire by Sunday night. Following healthy habits can enhance your general sense of well-being and set you up well for the start of your work week. Strive for a healthy work-life balance by claiming each Sunday for yourself, your own pursuits and your own self-care.
