June 2020

Welcome to your June edition! When I was 14 years old, I broke my femur downhill skiing in my hometown of Cadillac, Michigan. I spent 43 days hospitalized in skeletal traction. I remember the nurses writing the date on the whiteboard every morning. As a teenager, it was a looooong 43 days and it ended in a body cast and brace that kept me mostly immobile for another six weeks. In many ways, the experience shaped who I am today and made me a stronger, more empathetic, and more resilient person. Whether we realize it or not, the stay at home order that began in March and lifted last month has also shaped us and changed us as individuals and as a community. Now that the state has opened up, we have an opportunity to take a deep breath and think deeply about what we want to put back into our lives. We have a chance to define a new version of normal, a rare opportunity to get rid of the noise and to only bring back what works for us, what makes our lives richer, what makes our kids happier, and what makes us truly proud.

Regardless of your stance on the COVID-19 pandemic and its repercussions, I believe that we all care deeply about one another and want what is best for our country and its citizens. Over that past few months, that has been evident in every meal dropped off for a neighbor, in every Zoom or drive-by birthday party, and in every effort to check on a friend’s well-being. Although we may not agree on how “best” is defined, we are good people and we have our collective best interest at heart. This a great time to reflect on how we truly want our lives and community to be defined. After all, in the words of Carl Bard, “Although no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.” See you on The Front Porch!

On Our Cover

Marley Park is home to many people who have dedicated their lives to working in the field of health care. Many of our neighbors are Registered Nurses, while others have jobs in a range of fields in the health care industry. While these folks are always heroes in our community, the onset of a global pandemic unlike anything anyone living has ever experienced has elevated the level of risk they face going to work each day, the mental and emotional stress brought on by their service our community’s most vulnerable members, and the risk they bring home to their families at the end of each shift. It has also elevated their hero status to the highest level. So, to these Marley Park neighbors and heroes, we want to say THANK YOU for your courage, your dedication, and your service to our community. You are appreciated. Artists Corner

In a way, I have been an artist my whole life, but I seriously started taking art classes in high school, my senior year. From there I realized that I had a talent in this subject, and because of that, I chose to become an art major in college. That experience immensely broadened my knowledge about fine art. Now almost 10 years later, I am a busy mom of three little ones, and my artwork often takes a backseat in my current life. I have recently decided to intentionally dedicate time to peruse my passion for art. I absolutely love doing portraits and capturing personality and expression. This specific portrait is of my 4 year old daughter and is done in pastel. I love working with color in my artwork, because if you look closely at anything you will see so much more color than you would initially expect. I am inspired by impressionistic artists, but my artwork often leans more towards realism, while still using the impressionistic understanding of color theory. Thank you for choosing to feature my artwork, I am so humbled and appreciative of the opportunity. Submitted by Kaitlyn Favreau | Marley Park Resident

Perspectives of a Teacher Mom It’s summertime, and like most families, my family can find it a challenge to adjust to the more relaxed schedule that comes with no school responsibility. Don’t get me wrong, I love having the freedom to loll about with our calendars and workloads, but what I do not love, is the electronic love fest, in which my children are so inclined to drown themselves. I’m especially not thrilled that, due to the virtual schooling scenario bringing on a more lackadaisical atmosphere earlier than usual, we are feeling a little lost as how to kick off summer, appropriately. Usually, we take a week to revel in the breezy itinerary of having nothing pressing to get to, and then we begin my summer list. I love my brilliant list! My kids groan, even at the mention of the list, but I believe that, deep down, they don’t think it’s too bad. It’s just enough ‘to do’ tasks to get them through half the day, before they can even consider plopping in front of a screen. It’s a fantastic way to keep kids motivated to: brush their teeth, eat meals, get in some reading time, etc, before running directly to the screens. It makes screen time a reward, rather

than the day’s main event, as soon as their eyes open in the AM. This summer feels different though. I don’t know if it’s because school didn’t get to end properly, or if having school turn into such a screen driven process, is making it more difficult to step away from the electronics. Having to be teacher to my students, from home, while also feuding with my own children to get their virtual schoolwork done, seems to have taken a little wind from my summer listmaking sails. I feel like I used up all my summer mom strategies during our virtual learning experience, and my kids know it! Here’s hoping we can turn this summer into the fun, semi-productive, yet relaxing time we are used to. After all, our kids need familiar routines now more than ever. Happiness Matters “What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” ~Henry David Thoreau For many, staying home in April and May was a “gift of time.” During that crazy time when we could do nothing but stay at home, I wanted to improve myself and learn a new skill. I accomplished that and got many projects done

around the house. One that I am particularly proud of is learning how to crochet dolls. With that new skill I crocheted dolls of my family so they looked like a family portrait lined up together.

Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

This month, I want us to focus on making time for ourselves and improving ourselves. This could be different for each of us, but I think that it is important. All of us can learn something new. If we focus on improving ourselves, we will feel happier. I think that the pride and jubilation that comes from accomplishing something new makes us so happy. Although our stay at home order has ended, many people are choosing to continue to stay home. We should use this time to improve who we are as people. I hope that all of us will try something new and do everything we want to do. I want to see all your skills, so share them in The Front Porch group on Facebook. Hope you all find the time to better yourself. “If you want something you’ve never had, you’ve got to do something you’ve never done.” ~Thomas Jefferson Submitted by Olivia Black | Age 15 | Marley Park Resident

Home Sweet Home Today, many people are asking themselves if they should buy or sell a home in 2020. Some have shifted their plans or put them on hold over the past couple of months, and understandably so. Everyone seems to be wondering if the market is going to change and when the economy will turn around. If you’re trying to figure out what’s going to happen and how to play your cards this year, you’re not alone. This spring in the 2020 NAR Flash Survey: Economic Pulse, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) has been tracking the behavior changes of homebuyers and sellers. In a reaction to their most recent survey, Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist at NAR, noted the beginnings of a turn in the market: “After a pause, home sellers are gearing up to list their properties with the reopening of the economy…Plenty of buyers also appear ready

8 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

to take advantage of record-low mortgage rates and the stability that comes with these locked-in monthly payments into future years.” Sellers are positioning themselves to make moves this year. More than 3 in 4 potential sellers are preparing to sell their homes, which means more homes will start to be available for interested buyers. Buyer demand is also strong right now, and many are simply waiting for more inventory to become available so they can make a move, especially as the country begins to reopen. If you’re thinking about putting your house on the market, connect with your local REALTOR® today. There’s a good chance an eager buyer is looking for a home just like yours. Spiritual Thoughts My daddy has an incredibly special pair of glasses. They are well disguised. Most people do not know they are there. But if you get close enough to my daddy, you will know they sit right before his eyes. Each of his children has experienced his super vision when he peers at us through his spectacles with a loving gaze. These exceptional glasses give him the ability to see past our shortcomings, failures, hurts, and disappointments. They display our true potential. The glasses also help him to see the dreams in his heart manifest themselves in the people he loves most. Using his glasses, my daddy saw my brother, Duggan, transformed into a major league baseball player. My brother, Luke, changed into an NFL football player. As for me, I became a bestselling author. Of course, none of these dreams became a reality. His dreams matured as we matured and became even more special. My daddy is the golf coach and caddy for my son, Thomas. Thomas’s ambition has always been to be a professional golfer, the next Tiger

Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

Woods. My heart would burst hearing Thomas talk about being on TV one day playing golf in the Masters. Being the grounded person that I am, I understand that my son going professional one day is like getting a winning lottery ticket. One day, it dawned on me that the reason my son believes with all his heart that he is going to be the next Bobby Jones is because my daddy was still sporting his glasses. He spoke confidence and faith into Thomas to follow his big dream, just like he had with me. I believe God gave these glasses to my daddy to bless everyone around him. They help him to see what God sees. When God looks at us, he does not account for the present reality. He sees our gifts, our talents, our true potential. He watches with pride as his dreams for us manifest themselves, dreams even bigger than the ones we had for ourselves. Submitted by Josie Flancbaum | Marley Park Resident

Let Grow Surprise “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt The biggest thing I have learned during these past few weeks is that I never knew how much of my free time was filled with routine. Having things that stabilize your life is not a bad thing. However, we have all been forced to break our routines recently. The hardest challenge for me has been trying to find things to fill my time that are productive. Sure, I could scroll through social media all day, but that usually leaves me in a bad mood. In an effort to find experiences that will enrich my life, I decided to research and listen to a bunch of musicals. I love musical theater, but until now I had not had much time to sit down and invest myself wholeheartedly in a good musical. I found many that I really enjoyed, and some were based on actual events, so I learned a lot about historical events as well.

This month, I encourage you to find one thing that you are passionate about and really dive into it. Musicals are certainly are not for everyone, but perhaps movies are your thing. Or maybe you are into cars. The point is to find something that captures your interest and utilize this time to learn more about it. Whether it be a generalized topic or something more specific, cultivate your passion, and grow it. Most of us have a lot of extra free time on our hands right now and discovering things you love is a great way to continue to learn and grow even if we can’t continue with our “normal” lives. You can even do it without even leaving your bed. So, take some time to learn something new, and explore something you maybe never would’ve before. Community Cares It was after regulation and two overtime periods that my teammates and I lined up to take our penalty kicks. We were competing in the district championship against Sunset Hills Elementary. The first round of penalty kicks ended in a tie, so we started sudden death kicks. My teammate lined up and hit a clean shot into the upper left corner. We were district champions! My teammates and I were awarded in the next week’s city council meeting and had our picture taken with Mayor Hall. It the highlight of 2020, so far, for me! Then the COVID-19 pandemic happened and I could no longer practice or play soccer. With my afternoons and evenings free, I was looking for something to fill my time. I had spent some time sewing in the past, mostly making pillows and even starting to work on a quilt. I started working extra hard on my chores and one day my parents surprised me with a sewing machine of my own!

Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

At first, I spent time working on piecing together a quilt, but after some time, I realized that the need was for masks for my family and community. I started sewing masks. My first customers were family from Oklahoma, but then it turned into something much bigger. I do not ask for money, but people donate and have been very generous. I am saving any money I make to (hopefully) go to church camp this summer! As sad as I was that my soccer season was cut short, I am glad to be helping my family and community with my ability to sew masks. Thanks mom and dad for the sewing machine!
