Welcome to your June issue! Perhaps it’s because I worked as a School Social Worker before going into real estate, but I still get butterflies of excitement in my stomach when school lets out for the year and summer begins. JUNE! That magical month of freedom. When I was a school social worker, it meant two months off from work. Now it just means I don’t have to remind our kids to pack their lunches every night or remember what costume they need to wear each day of “spirit week.” It’s still exciting though! Surprise has a wealth of opportunities to keep kids occupied during the summer months. The City of Surprise hosts several different summer camps ranging from all-day care that includes fun field trips to different parts of the Valley to sports camps of every kind and for nearly every
age. There are many churches offering Vacation Bible School camps both during the day and in the evening. WHAM is offering a wide variety of affordable art classes for kids throughout the summer. There are also opportunities for golf lessons, horseback riding, and music education. As the mother of a six-year-old and eight-yearold, I’ve researched the different camps and activities that are available and have signed our kids up for the ones that interest them. If you need help finding the right camp or activity for your child(ren), feel free to contact me and I’d be happy to share what I know! To all women and the many ways you mother and are mothered, I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day last month. Father’s Day is June 16th and provides us an opportunity to appreciate the men in our lives and all the ways they father and are fathered. Be sure to hug the men who father you this month and remember as Wade Boggs said, “Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad.” As always, see you on The Front Porch!

On Our Cover
The Cross Family: Our Journey with Autism
The journey of having a child with autism is different for every family. Our journey began with our first born, Justin. At 18 months, Justin began showing many signs of Autism. As first-time parents, we knew something wasn’t right. There wasn’t much we could do except put all energy and focus into being Justin’s advocate. We struggled to find answers for almost two years. At three years of age, Justin finally received his autism diagnosis. There was such a feeling of relief, as well as a feeling of mourning. We were mourning the person who we thought Justin would be. It was difficult to accept. We made the decision as parents that we would not focus on what he would not be able to do, but rather focus on all the things he can do. He sees the world in such a different light, and he has passed his outlook onto us. Along with his diagnosis, we were finally able to receive the services Justin needed to excel with his development. He does speech, feeding, occupational, and ABA therapy weekly. We now try to focus on what autism gives to our family rather than focus on what society imagines that it takes away. Together, we focus on the joys of autism so we can live our lives with happiness. Every day we are learning how to better understand and meet Justin’s needs. We have
Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
been blessed with an affectionate child. Justin is the product of positivity, unconditional love, and total acceptance. Autism has such a strong impact on our entire family. The most important thing we have learned is that Justin is different and not less. With Justin as our tour guide, we have begun such an incredible journey. As a family, our biggest desire is for others to increase understanding and acceptance for those with special needs. Autism now effects 1 in 59 children in the United States and continues to grow. Most importantly, we need compassion. Justin has made tremendous progress in all areas of development. He is finally verbal and is progressing with his development. He loves and lives life to the fullest. He has become the most exceptional big brother this past year and we cannot thank him enough for the gifts of love and autism. Natural Matters
Did you know that there are many types of homeopathic remedies you can use without the risk of harmful side effects? Of course, there can be a need for over the counter medications an antibiotics (always seek assistance when in doubt) but in many instances trying a natural remedy could save you time, money, and unwanted side effects. Check out this list for a few must haves to get your natural remedy cabinet started.
Elderberry syrup is an excellent immune booster. Use at the first sign of a cold or illness, when trying to avoid an illness someone close may have, or before traveling on an airplane. Be cautious when giving elderberry to those less than one as some contains raw honey. Vitamin C in the form of sodium ascorbate n high doses will help knock out a cold. It’s important to remember to always use the true vitamin C. Read your supplement label before purchasing. Mixed with some juice works well for kids. Colloidal silver is antimicrobial and antibacterial as well as antiviral and anti-inflammatory. It can
Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
help with many things, including eye, ear, and sinus infections, ringworm, asthma, eczema, colds/ flu, even pneumonia.
Epsom salt is great for a soak in the bath for all ages. Epsom salt helps draw and eliminate toxins from your body. It’s very helpful when fighting a cold or just for aches and pains. Mullein garlic oil can be purchased at the health food store or you can make your own using 2TBS of olive oil and 2-3 cloves of freshly minced garlic. Allow to sit overnight and strain for use the next morning. Garlic oil is amazing for ear aches and infections. Apple Cider Vinegar kills many types of harmful bacteria. It aids in losing weight, lowers cholesterol and improves heart health and lowers blood sugar levels. It’s excellent with warm water and honey for a sore throat. The best natural remedy should truly be in the whole foods that we consume (more on that next month!), but when the need arises for a wellness solution, consider a natural approach at home. Nutrition Advice
What is the Best Diet?
A title like that perks up our ears. We want to know. After all, many of us have tried them all. Is it Paleo? Keto? Vegan? Low-carb? The Pizza Diet? (it’s a real thing!) Before revealing the best diet, I want to recognize the touchiness of this subject. People have found great success, powerful healing, and a new life through various ways of eating. People are passionate about their nutrition camp...as they should be. With that elephant kicked out of the room, here it goes. The best diet is the one that YOU can follow consistently. To quote Krista Scott-Dixon, “The
decent method you follow is better than the “perfect” one you quit.” In my humble opinion, there is no best diet. Different diets work well for different people, with different goals, at different times in their lives. So, if there is no perfect diet, where do we start? How about with what most nutritional experts agree upon. Eat more vegetables. A variety of vegetables, with green, leafy vegetables getting the gold medal, belong at the center of your meals. Eat more whole foods. As Michael Pollan says, “If it came from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don’t.” Eat Less added sugar in all its forms, refined flour (pasta, bread, crackers, cakes, bagels, cereals, etc.), and vegetable oils (they are in most processed foods). It would be ideal, but perhaps unrealistic to make these changes overnight. For most people, sustainable change happens by making small, incremental changes over time. Small habits that gain momentum and turn into massive, lasting changes. This is what I do with my nutrition clients. It is what I have seen work best in my own life and in the lives of those around me. So today, what is one small nutritional habit you could focus on in your life? A habit to add or a habit to remove. After mastering number one, what is the next habit, and the next? Here’s to you becoming the healthiest version of you. I’m rooting for you. Momspiration I would like to introduce you this month to Britany, mother of two teenage girls and stepmom to five! Last May, Britany graduated with her Master of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. Schooling wasn’t always easy for Britany. When she first went to college as a young girl trying to get her bachelor’s degree, she dropped out of school and didn’t tell anybody! She eventually went back to finish her bachelor’s and gained such a passion for the work she was doing. Her confidence grew so much she wanted to continue her education. Britany now works for First Things First. She travels all over the White Mountains in Northern Arizona helping care givers with cultures situations, poverty, abuse, addiction, and many other issues faced by caregivers and children. Britany said her knowledge of child development affected her as a mother when her children were younger. She said it had both a positive and negative affect on her. She knew that scientifically speaking, what she was doing with her children mattered to their development. With that knowledge also came a lot of mom guilt.
She learned that guilt was not a motivating factor. It wasn’t productive and it only tore her down as a mother. Her first child was had severe colic and cried for the first three months of her life. She realized than that not everything is picture perfect and she could only apply her knowledge the very best she could, given her circumstances. This is something Britany likes to add when she teaches her classes to other caregivers. We all do our best as parents with the knowledge we have and with whatever situation we are given. Britany’s attitude of never giving up and overcoming obstacles to get her bachelor’s degree as well as her master’s degree is extremely inspiring. It is a great example of never giving up and continuing to push through the hard times. Even if that means only taking one class at a time or driving 3 ½ hours to class each week. Whatever goal we want to achieve as mothers we can do it!!! Britany achieving her dream of getting her master’s is proof of that! Momspiration is brought to you by @ HowDoYouMom. Home Sweet Home Selling a home can be stressful, but the guidance of a good real estate agent can alleviate much of the stress and anxiety that comes with preparing a property for sale and navigating the process from listing to contract to closing. One of the first things you’ll need to do to prepare your home for the market is to stage it. Some people always keep their homes looking like professional decorated and staged models. Those home are they easiest to sell. If you’re in this category, your agent will just need to schedule a professional photo shoot and HD video walk-through and she will be ready to show your home to the world in no time. On the other hand, if you have kids, pets, and/ or a slightly disorganized spouse, the idea of getting your home show-ready may seem a little daunting. If you’re in this category, look for a REALTOR® who is an Accredited Staging Professional. An “ASP” will be able to do a walkthrough of your home and tell you exactly what needs to be done to show it in its best light. This might involve removing personal photos, decluttering the tops of furniture and counters, or
10 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
removing some pieces of furniture in order to free up space. A typical homeowner can complete the tasks in a weekend or two and be ready for professional photos and videos before the house goes on the market. If you’ve read this far and you’re starting to feel the anxiety creep into your bones, you might be in a third category. I call these folks the “chaos coordinators.” Some people simply thrive in chaotic environments! For those people, the thought of staging, decluttering, organizing, and minimizing can be overwhelming. If this is the case, look for an agent who works with the largest home buyers in the market and can bring you a cash offer for the value of your home in the condition that it’s in. A cash offer from a large homebuyer eliminates all need for staging, prepping for photos, or even cleaning, and can allow a home seller the freedom to purchase their next home with a flexible closing date. Regardless of your situation, your neighborhood real estate specialist will help you understand your options and achieve your goals. Storybook Park The bench is hard, but the sun to shadow is dappled on my knees, breeze playing patterns at my feet.
Poetry Corner
I once roamed this street, under moonlight, looking for chalk drawings, now displayed on posts: a basketball, tree house, stars in crayon, Emma and Jacob, eight and six. It’s such a mix here, a fix for any passion or fashion, inspiration. Birds are skimming the grass for treats, asphalt shimmering heat in an afternoon evaporation.
Green is struggling with the molten light that has taken forever to sever roots. Doves dance in the canopy tree, only audience me.
Nodding my farewell to Cleo and Melinda, stick-figure girl on a slide, other on a bike, I continue my hike away from reverie and back to now, taking only a memory of Storybook Park. Submitted by Terry R. Thomas | Marley Park Resident

Artist’s Corner Sedona is a Beautiful place that’s only a short drive from the valley of Phoenix. Its many creeks are popular locations for people escaping the heat, especially in these summer months. Many times, we only see the gorgeous views it offers from the main road passing Bell Rock and Oak Creek and forget there’s a vast mostly untouched wilderness just to its west. Places like Devil’s Bridge and multiple heritage sites might be more off the beaten path but offer an amazing red rock backdrop. It’s in this wilderness that this beautiful May sunrise was captured a few hundred feet in the sky over some off-road camp sites. Submitted by Carson Cavaletto Marley Park Resident

Day Trips
The Arizona desert had been my home for over fifteen years before I discovered that there is a perennial stream running through it that is fed by a natural spring. I was shocked. Having grown up in Michigan where over 40% of the state is water and you are never more than six miles from a body of water, I thought that moving to the desert meant leaving all beautiful lakes, rivers, and springs behind…particularly natural ones. I had to visit. Part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers system, Fossil Creek runs through lands managed by the Coconino and Tonto national forests. The creek flows 14 miles from Fossil Springs, its source, to the Verde River downstream and gushes 20,000 gallons a minute at the bottom of a 1,600-foot-deep canyon. Fossil Creek has several Dilzhé’é (Western Apache) cultural sites. The Dilzhé’é lived along Fossil Creek for generations and several families consider this to be their homeland. Nevertheless, Fossil Creek is open to visitors year-round with a
Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
permit required between May 1st and October 1st to avoid overcrowding during the hottest months. Permits can be obtained online at Recreation.gov. To get to Fossil Creek, take I-17 to Camp Verde, exit on the SR260, and head east 10 miles to Fossil Creek Road. Turn right and continue along Fossil Creek Road until you reach the creek, approximately 14 miles down the road. Those last 14 miles are a washboard dirt two-track and will take about an hour. Four- or all-wheel drive is a must. It’s not for the faint of heart…but it’s worth it. The first time we visited Fossil Creek, our kids were just three- and fiveyears-old (pictured here). It was a hot day in June and after being cooped up in their car seats all morning, they were thrilled to plunge into the cool, clear, flowing waters. We packed a picnic and took snack breaks in between jumping off cliffs and rocks into the currents below. It was amazing and has since become an annual tradition for our family. We’ll be heading there later this month and can’t wait to experience the wonder of a natural spring in the desert once again. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident

Drive Wise Surprise
Salt River tribal Officer Clayton Townsend died recently. I don’t know him. I’ve never met him. And now his baby boy won’t know him either. He died. Actually, he was killed. He was killed by a distracted driver who was texting and driving.
We’ve all done it, right? Just look down quickly. Shoot back a quick answer. Finish the argument. Read the punchline. Get the address to the party. I know I’m guilty. I’m pretty sure we all are. The City of Surprise recently enacted a Distracted Driving Ordinance. But do we really need to legislate good behavior? No. We just need to hold ourselves to a higher standard. Sure, a $250 fine would remind us not to, but $250 isn’t going to bring that baby’s daddy back. It’s not going to unbreak the heart of this officer’s wife. Someday the baby boy will be a young man. The only daddy he will know is the one that appears in the photos that his mommy thought to take. He will be an urban legend of sorts. His dad will be the one the other kids talk about and the moms
16 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
at the school will whisper about when he’s not listening.
This boy will always wonder what his life would’ve been like with his daddy in it. His wife will always wonder what kind of soccer coach he would have been. And how proud he would be of his son’s first tee ball game. She’ll wonder if she’ll ever not have to remember to breathe again. She’ll always miss him. She’ll always love him. Clayton’s mom will forever mourn the loss of HER baby boy. She’ll be angry at the unfairness of it all. Her baby didn’t deserve this. Nobody’s does. The silence of his missing voice will be deafening on holidays, birthdays and on their standing daily phone call. TEXT is the four-letter word that killed him. The fight can be finished when you get home. The joke will be funny later. Know where you’re going when you get in the car. Don’t be the one who kills someone’s daddy. Or mommy. Or only son. It’s up to you to change your behavior. Start immediately. Submitted by Natalie Stahl | West Valley Resident
