Welcome to your May edition! Next month, I’m planning a girls’ weekend with three of my out-of-state friends who are coming to visit. One is from New Jersey, one from Florida, and one from California…and none of them have ever been to Arizona. Whenever we have out-of-state guests, we always take a trip to Sedona for a Pink Jeep Tour. If you’ve never been, it’s really an Arizona bucket list item and I highly recommend doing it at least once. I’m going to schedule ours in the morning so we can spend the afternoon at Grasshopper Point. It will be triple digit temperatures by then and the cool creek will be a welcome reprieve. Grasshopper Point is another favorite spot of ours. I’m almost hesitant to share it because I think it’s one of the best kept secrets of Sedona…but you, my dear readers, deserve to know. Most people
think of Slide Rock as the place to go in Sedona, but Grasshopper Point is far less crowded, the entrance fee is only $9 per vehicle, and there is more shade and diversity of terrain for those who like to hike as well as those who like to just relax. I recommend packing a lunch and spending the whole afternoon! While they are in town, I also plan to take my friends to Vogue Bistro. They’ve been listening to me talk about Vogue for years…it’s by far my favorite restaurant in the entire Valley, and we are so lucky to have it right here in Surprise. I always tell people that once you have a Vogue martini, it will ruin all other martinis for you! Having out of town guests is a nice way to see your little corner of the world with a fresh perspective. It makes you think about all the little gems that are close to home that we sometimes take for granted. Even if you’re not having visitors, I encourage you to take advantage of all Surprise and greater Arizona have to offer this summer. After all, in the words of Jawaharial Nehru “We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.” See you on The Front Porch!

On Our Cover
Dakoda Roman is a HUGE sports buff. He and his dad, Jason, watch ALL THE SPORTS together. The Suns, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Coyotes… Dakoda is even a season ticket holder for the Rattlers. The two of them have Twitter account to talk about the latest in Arizona sports. Dakoda’s favorite line when discussing the next game is “Bad News for [opponent]”. Dakoda and Jason have quite a following on Twitter now. They have even been invited to games by the Suns and have had Twitter followers donate tickets to them! Jason and Allyson Roman are Arizona natives. They’ve been in Surprise since 2005 and Marley Park since 2017. Dakoda will be 23 in June and his brothers, Brody and Tate are 15 and 9, respectively. Dakoda graduated from Shadow Ridge High School in 2017. His brother Brody attends Willow Canyon and Tate goes to Legacy Traditional School. Dakoda currently utilizes his outgoing personality to serve as a greeter at church. He would like to find a career path related to sports; perhaps sports broadcasting. Dakoda spent the first eight weeks of his life in the NICU at Good Sam in Phoenix (now Phoenix Children’s). When she was 27 weeks pregnant, Allyson had a seizure caused by toxemia and doctors had to deliver Dakoda to save her life and his. He did well in the NICU and was able to come home almost a month before his due date. As first-time parents, Allyson and Jason didn’t
know what to expect. Doctors told them Dakoda would just be a little behind, but at age two, he still wasn’t walking or sitting up. They enrolled him in all available early interventions, therapies, etc. Eventually, they took him to an orthopedic doctor who diagnosed Dakoda with cerebral palsy. Although he can’t walk, Dakoda does strength training through a program called Special Strong. He played sports throughout his childhood, first through the City of Surprise Buddy Sports program, and then through the Best Buddies program at Shadow Ridge. Today, Dakoda still participates in Buddy Bowling. Aside from sports and serving at church, Dakoda loves video games and attends a program that provides job experience for people with disabilities. Dakoda’s younger brothers are a huge help with his needs, and he attends all his brothers’ sports activities. The three of them are very close. Online Safety It’s never been more important for parents to ensure their children are safe and staying productive online. With so many popular apps, websites and streaming services, keeping track of what your children are exposed to can be difficult. Even the most cautious kids can become victims of cybercrimes, especially child identity theft. Children 18 years old and younger are often targets of identity theft because their unmarked credit scores and Social Security numbers are rarely monitored. According to a report by Javelin Research, child identity fraud costs families in the U.S. almost $1 billion a year and requires much time for parents to resolve. The report also found that 1.25 million children were victims of identity theft in 2021 and 1 in 50 children became an ID fraud victim in 2021
These statistics are frightening, but that doesn’t mean that parents need to live in fear. By taking proactive steps to protect your children online, you can empower them to use technology responsibly while keeping them safe from potential online threats. Child internet safety is not a new topic, but it’s become even more relevant to the public thanks to the rapidly growing number of social media platforms and other digital sites and apps. The issue is so prevalent that it’s caught the attention of lawmakers. Introduced to the U.S. Senate in February, the Kids Online Safety Act is a bipartisan bill that would create new rules and safeguards to protect children from stalking, exploitation, addiction and dangerous materials online. “The internet can open up a world of experiences for children, but it can also expose them and the whole family to digital crime,” said Kelly Merryman, President and COO of Aura, an all-in-one digital safety platform. “Parental controls are a powerful tool that allows your children to safely explore the internet while giving you much-needed peace of mind.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that kids as young as eight years old spend an average of six hours per day looking at screens, and that number only goes up as kids get older. While you can’t monitor every minute your kids spend online, you can use parental controls to protect them as they enjoy the latest trends, games and shows. With these tools, families can foster healthy internet habits in kids as well as protect them (and you) from potential cybercrimes. Home Sweet Home Many analysts projected home price appreciation would slow dramatically in the fall of 2021 and then continue to soften throughout 2022. So far, that hasn’t happened. The major price indices are all revealing ongoing double-digit price appreciation. Last year, home price appreciation accelerated dramatically from January to July. Then it began to decelerate in August when prices appreciated at a slower pace, but it didn’t decline. Many thought that would be the beginning of a rapid slowdown in the level of home price appreciation, but the data shows, that wasn’t the case. Instead, prices began to level off for a few months before an appreciation re-acceleration again in December. To clarify, deceleration is not the same as depreciation. Acceleration means prices rise at a greater year-over-year pace than the previous month. Deceleration means home values continue to rise but at a slower pace of yearover-year appreciation. Depreciation means prices drop below current values. No one is forecasting that to happen. In fact, the FHFA revealed that price appreciation accelerated in December in six of the nine regions it tracks.
Case Shiller showed that appreciation accelerated in 15 of the 20 metros they report on. As Selma Hepp, Deputy Chief Economist at CoreLogic, explains, “After some signs of slowing home price growth . . . monthly price growth re-accelerated again, indicating home buyers have not yet thrown in the towel.” Whether you’re a first-time purchaser or someone looking to sell your current house and buy a home that better fits your needs, waiting to decide what to do will cost you in two ways. First, mortgage rates are forecast to rise this year. Secondly, home prices should continue to appreciate at double-digit levels for some time. If you wait, rising mortgage rates and high home price appreciation will have a dramatic impact on your monthly mortgage payment. The best thing to do is listen to the advice of Len Kiefer, Deputy Chief Economist at Freddie Mac, “If you’re thinking about waiting until next year and that maybe rates are higher, but you’ll get a deal on prices – well that’s risky. It may be more advantageous to purchase this year relative to waiting until 2023 at this time.” Submitted by Christie Giannetto | REALTOR® | REAL Broker

Optimism
May is one of my favorite months of the year. The weather is changing, kids are graduating, and we begin to transition from strict, rigid schedules to that summer, relaxed vibe. With all the change going on, it can be challenging to not be overwhelmed or stressed. Having an optimistic mindset can help you through these transitions. Optimism does not mean constant positivity; it means practicing resilience and being adaptable when things take a turn. Here are some tips to shift your mindset and become more optimistic. Take care of your basic needs first. It’s so hard to make radical change when our basic needs are not met. Look at your nutrition choices and ask yourself if those choices are contributing to your health or taking from it. Analyze your work-life balance and see if and changes need to be met for overall happiness. Pick a rest day before your body picks one for you. To kick off an optimistic mindset if you are feeling stuck, stimulate dopamine by listening to music and getting a good night’s rest.
10 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
Serotonin is a mood stabilizer that contributes to your thinking patterns. If those patterns feel off try to exercise and get sunshine on a regular basis. Oxytocin is a hormone that gives humans a sense of connectedness, regulating oxytocin can set the foundation for an optimistic mindset. To increase oxytocin, you can hug your family members or enjoy a meal with people you love. Changing thinking patterns is a practice that takes time. Challenge those pessimistic thinking patterns by replacing one thought with another. In challenging situations, choose to work on the things within your control and let go of the things that are not. Change your perspective asking yourself, what would you tell a best friend who was going through the same thing? If you are having a difficult time, take a moment to remove yourself from your current situation and focus on breathing, take a shower, or have some water. Remind yourself that transitions mean growth and even if there are some growing pains. Submitted by Christina Demers, M.S. | Marley Park Resident

Eating Clean
We’ve all heard the phrase “clean eating” but for some, creating a daily diet made up of only these foods can be intimidating, especially when looking to put a healthy meal on the table at the end of a busy day. Fortunately, “eating clean” doesn’t have to be daunting.
* Lose the refined starches and up your fruit and veggie intake. Including a fruit or vegetable at every meal can “squeeze out” many of the unwanted foods and ingredients you might otherwise eat. Swap sugary, fatty ice cream for a bowl of berries, or try snacking on baby carrots and hummus instead of chips. * Get rid of the calorie clutter in your beverages. Between sugary sodas, fruit juices, alcoholic
Susan Bowerman, M.S., R.D., CSSD, CSOWM, FAND, senior director of Worldwide Nutrition Education and training at Herbalife Nutrition, shares four ways to clear your diet clutter: * Read food labels to help you ditch extra sugar, salt and fat. Check labels for fat, sodium and sugar content, and compare brands to find those with the least amounts. For example, choose plain yogurt and whole grain cereals rather than pre-sweetened and refined products, and look for unsalted or low sodium canned and frozen veggies. beverages and fancy coffee drinks, many people take in hundreds of calories a day from beverages alone. Plain tea is a great alternative because it can be drunk hot or cold, has virtually no calories, and has natural compounds that may offer some health benefits. * Clear the clutter from your fridge, freezer and pantry. Fill your pantry with high-fiber whole grains (like 100% whole wheat pasta, bread, cereals and flour, and foods like quinoa, millet and brown rice). Buy beans and canned tomatoes for soups, stews and pasta. Stock your refrigerator and freezer with plain fruits and veggies and nonfat or low-fat dairy products. And keep canned tuna or salmon, frozen fish filets or chicken breasts to add protein to your quick, healthy meals. Travel Tips
Warm sand between your toes, a cool drink in your hand, the sun setting over the beautiful ocean ... these are the dreams of an ideal vacation. With an all-inclusive resort, planning is minimal so you can focus on enjoying what matters most - your vacation. The best resorts have something for everyone: mom relaxing at the spa, dad having a cocktail poolside, kids playing all day and adventurous friends seeking beachfront activities and entertainment. And while today’s all-inclusive resorts deliver elevated experiences and offerings for every age and interest, not all are alike. For example, some all-inclusive resorts offer enhanced food and beverage options served in a seaside lounge, while others may offer mojito and tequila lounges or unforgettable views with customized drinks prepared by expert mixologists. But not all resorts offer this level of service. Before you book your all-inclusive vacation, make sure your resort has the following items: 1. Look for a variety of cuisine, and then some A vacation means a break from cooking and

meal planning, so when looking to book an allinclusive resort, make sure they offer multiple onsite restaurants to remove the hassle of deciding where to eat with your group. 2. Find all the fun in the sun Second to plentiful food and drink at hand, the best thing about an all-inclusive resort is all the activities included in your stay. Be sure to find a resort that offers everything you want. Most Mexican and Caribbean resorts have pools and beaches. But if you need adventure, seek resorts that also include water sports equipment for snorkeling and kayaking. Look for resorts offering live music, dazzling shows and dancing. 3. Privacy by the sea If your vacation is a romantic getaway, you’ll want seclusion and serenity. All-inclusive hotels often cater to couples’ needs by offering privacy options including adult pools, private swim-out suites and jetted tubs, plus romantic restaurants, world-class spas and casinos. Or, choose an all-inclusive resort with a kids’ club, which offers supervised and fun programs for children while giving mom and dad some space to hit the links or enjoy a quiet meal. 4. Education destination via culture Learning about and enjoying new cultures stimulates the mind and satisfies the curious soul, without leaving the resort. Great allinclusive resorts integrate the local culture with engaging programs, classes and experiences that will enhance your vacation, such as salsa and merengue lessons, tequila tastings and local crafts. 5. Above and beyond hospitality You want a place that spoils you yet feels like home. The right all-inclusive resort will have more than beachfront accommodations. Seek world-class spas, personalized concierge, friendly team members and high-end offerings. Once you have selected your resort, book, pay and go. All you need to do is have fun. The allinclusive resort handles the rest. May 2022

Allergies
If you have or suspect you have seasonal allergies, there are many ways you can address your symptoms. Take stock of your environment and learn how to relieve indoor and outdoor allergy symptoms. Below are six tips to help you manage your spring allergy triggers. 1. Wear protective clothing When you spend time outdoors, make sure to wear protective clothing to minimize your exposure to pollen and other allergens. Pants, long-sleeve shirts and hats help keep pollen off your skin and out of your hair. Make sure to wear a pair of sunglasses to keep pollen out of your eyes. Finally, when you’re ready to go back indoors, take off your shoes to minimize outdoor allergens coming into your home. 2. Use an antihistamine Allergy medications like over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamines can help relieve allergy symptoms. While there are many allergy medications, a 24-hour antihistamine taken once daily can be incredibly effective in managing allergies during the day, especially if you spend lots of time outdoors. 3. Shower Showering, or at the very least rinsing off after spending time outside, can help manage allergens. Even with protective clothing, pollen and other allergens can get stuck on your hair and skin. Rinsing off any pollen can also reduce the number of outdoor allergens that make it indoors.
a week. When doing laundry, make sure to use products free of fragrances and dyes. When your laundry is dry, clean the dryer lint trap after every load to eliminate any lingering allergens. 5. Use a nasal spray If you are in need of 24-hour continuous relief from nasal allergy congestion, Nasacort is a nondrowsy nasal spray with no scent or harsh taste. 6. Use an air purifier Any remaining pollen that may have snuck into the home will stay suspended in the air. Using an air purifier can remove airborne pollen, dust and other irritants from your indoor air so you can breathe easily at home. Keep an eye on the filter and regularly clean it of any trapped allergens. While there is no one-size-fits-all for allergy relief, these six tips are an excellent place to start. By using these tips, you can reduce your exposure to allergens and manage your allergies so you can enjoy spring to the fullest.
