Welcome to your May edition! March 10th, 2020 will be a date that is etched in my mind forever. It marks a paradigm shift on a scale greater than I have ever before experienced. It’s the date that life was last “normal” for our family and for much of the world. I woke up, sent the kids off to school, worked all day, then headed to coach my daughter’s volleyball team’s first practice of the season. I considered canceling that practice. The news of COVID-19 was ramping up in mainstream media and I had been keeping an eye on it since early January. Before practice, I emailed the City of Surprise Recreation Department to see if they were considering cancelling practices. They weren’t. That night, I couldn’t sleep. I tossed and turned and texted my best girlfriend in the middle of the night saying I was considering keeping our kids home from school the next day. I wrestled with the decision, but by morning, it was clear. Our kids stayed home that day and the next, I put my assistant’s laptop on the front porch for her to pick up so she could start working from home, and I cancelled the remaining business appointments I had that week.

The past two months have been a roller coaster of emotions to say the least. Disbelief, fear, anger, and frustration have all been front and center. Yet, there has been an overwhelming feeling of peace and calm through it all as well. I’ve witnessed neighbors reaching out for help in The Front Porch group on Facebook and someone is always there to offer up what is needed without question. Our kids and I have participated in a “drive-by” birthday party so a little girl could feel celebrated during these uncertain times. We’ve connected with our outof-state family more through technology since everyone is less busy and more available to chat under these new circumstances. All these things have reminded me of the words of Wayne Dyer, “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” See you on The Front Porch…from at least six feet away!

On Our Cover

Event planning has been part of my personal and business life for at least a decade. Many of you know that I’ve planned the monthly Marley Park Ladies’ Night Out, the annual Marley Park Thanksgiving Potluck, and the annual Photos and Cookies with Santa event at the Marley Park Pool House, among many other community events, for the past seven years. One thing all these events have in common; they bring people together. In fact, bringing people together has always been the heart and soul of our community…of any community. After all, what is a community without its people…and what are people without each other? With social distancing in full effect, I wanted to find a way to bring the community together without requiring in-person contact. I started noticing a trend of chalk art photos being posted on social media. The idea of a chalk art contest seemed like a great way to encourage community engagement, but I didn’t want to contribute to sending people into stores to buy chalk. Amazon to the rescue! I had over 1,000 pieces of chalk delivered to our front porch in two days and it was all given away for free to

contest participants. Participation in the contest was phenomenal; over 100 entries in less than two weeks. There are some truly talented artists in our community. Many of the entries were inspirational; encouraging people to stay strong, support one another, and expressing gratitude toward those on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis. Still more entries were fun and lighthearted, ranging from Disney characters to unicorns and rainbows. Many of the entries were submitted by children of all ages. This month’s cover photo is a collage of the top 8 entries into the contest. The top three winners are posted in the Surprise Matters Facebook group and were each awarded a $50 gift card to a local restaurant. (Winners chose the restaurant, but it had to be local because I wanted to contribute to supporting our local businesses during this difficult time.) Plans are in the works to have a photo book printed of all the entries. My hope is that it will be a reminder of the hope, joy, and love that was expressed by our community during a challenging time. Please email me at Christie@AZLifestyleTeam.com if you’re interested in purchasing a photo book. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident

Class of 2020 Dear Class of 2020, After years of hard work toward the milestone of graduation, the COVID-19 crisis came on suddenly and upended all your plans and expectations for celebrating this amazing milestone. It’s an amazing milestone, nonetheless.

Allow yourself the time and space to grieve the loss of participating in the timeless traditions of graduation…then dust yourself off and use your ingenuity to find new ways of celebrating. After all, the whole world is suddenly being forced to find new ways of doing everything. Now, more than ever, we need YOU to contribute to that process. The world needs your strength, your creativity, your willingness to accept change and adapt, and your ability to find the silver linings among the biggest global crisis in modern

Thank you for your hard work toward achieving graduation. It means you’ve taken the next step toward becoming a positive contribution to our society. Remember, in the words of Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “It is your reaction to adversity, not the adversity itself, that determines how your life’s story will develop.” You’re starting a new chapter in your story…write a good one! Perspectives of a Teacher Mom As a public-school teacher, I admit I thought I was fully prepared to facilitate the virtual learning experience for my own two children, even as I journeyed into uncharted territory of teaching from behind a computer screen. I figured it would be a piece of cake. No problem at all. Boy oh boy, was I ever wrong. This very night, as I write this, it’s after 9:00 p.m. Both of my children are still working on assignments from today. There has been arguing, tears, and despair. My kids aren’t feeling so hot about it either.

In our home, we have; a grandma, a nana, a dad, and a mom (who happens to be a certified teacher...yours truly). We have the two children in this house far outnumbered, and we are all fairly intelligent and competent. Why can’t we get them to finish all their virtual classwork in a timely fashion? Why can’t we get them to do their best or stay focused? I have no idea, but as I torture myself with these questions, I am reminded of two things that I already know. First, setting a schedule is of the utmost importance. If you don’t know where you are going, you won’t know when you’ll

get there...right? Even though I recognize this, I haven’t been making it happen for my kids. I’ve been busily doing what I need to do for my students, and it’s causing it to be a challenge to make it a reality for my own children. This is especially true since my work and home life have been encapsulated into one place. I know many of you were thrown into that same boat, due to COVID-19 closures. Second, kiddos often perform better for a teacher (or coach, or tutor, etc.) than they do for their parents and guardians. Although this isn’t always the case, it’s definitely very common. Why? I don’t know...maybe that old adage, “familiarity breeds contempt.”

So, what will I do to ensure that my children get through this, and that I do too? I’ll just try again tomorrow while praying for patience, being Mom first and teacher second, and then I’ll pray for patience again for good measure. Tomorrow is a new day. Happiness Matters “Even in our trials we can experience joy and peace.” ~Robert D. Hales

These past few months have been crazy. I don’t even know how to describe it. It has been unbelievable. However, because I haven’t been in school and sports, I have been able to see things a different way. I have truly cherished the time I have had with my family, even though they drive me nuts sometimes (or every day during quarantine). I know that many of us are going through some difficult trials due to this lockdown of sorts. I know that it is very easy to only see the negative in our situations. I know that it’s easy to get frustrated with the people we live with and all the events being cancelled. But I want us to try and focus on something else. Like the quote above, we can still have joy and happiness during this dark time. We can see the

blessings disguised in the trials. For example, being stuck inside with our family, seeming to be a bad thing, could bring us closer. Having everything cancelled, could give you more time to do the things you’ve always wanted to do. This precious time is really a blessing in disguise. I hope that we will all start to see what this quarantine really is. We can realize all that we have been given, and to see that we are very blessed. There are so many worse things in life. If you are having a hard time with finding things to be grateful for during this time, start small. Start to look at things that you usually overlook. Like the nice weather in April, brave people who are on the front lines of this fight, and our families and friends. “No matter our circumstances, no matter our challenges or trials, there is something each day to embrace and cherish. There is something each day that can bring gratitude and joy if only we will see and appreciate it.” ~Dieter F. Uchdorf Submitted by Olivia Black | Age 15 | Marley Park Resident

Home Sweet Home The uncertainty the world faces today due to the COVID-19 pandemic is causing so many things to change. The way we interact, the way we do business, even the way we buy and sell real estate is changing. This is a moment in time that’s even sparking some buyers to search for a better deal on a home. Sellers, however, aren’t offering a discount these days; they’re holding steady on price.

ongoing questions around when the economy will bounce back, it’s interesting to note that some buyers see this time as an opportunity to win big in the housing market. On the other hand, sellers are much more confident that they will not need to reduce their prices in order to sell their homes. Clearly, there are two different perspectives at play.

According to the most recent NAR Flash Survey (a survey of real estate agents from across the country), agents were asked the following two questions: 1. “Have any of your sellers recently reduced their price to attract buyers?” Their answer: 72% said their sellers have not lowered prices to attract buyers during this health crisis. 2. “Are home buyers expecting lower prices now?” Their answer: 63% of agents said their buyers were looking for a price reduction of at least 5%. In today’s market, with everything changing and

Spiritual Thoughts A sad pout appeared on the face of my son as my husband gently told him to head to timeout in his room. Thomas had taken an armload of blankets out of the closet even after we cautioned him, he could only touch the blankets if he got our permission. His inventions and games with the blankets had gotten especially clever since coronavirus had us all quarantined. A few days prior, he had created a hospital ward with multiple beds for the sick. He convinced his sisters to be patients and they happily complied bringing all their toys with them to their hospital bed. As sweet as it was that the heart of his game was to take care of people, it was a significant clean up job for mom. We wanted to be prepared for the blanket game and try to contain the mess as much as possible.

As my little Charlie Brown walked to his room with his head hanging low, I thought this time out would set him back for most of the day. Thomas hardly ever needs discipline so when we implement a timeout, he takes them pretty hard. He will stay stuck in the doldrums for a while.

Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

I opened his door to check on him a few minutes later and found him sitting at his desk. He was writing on a piece of paper. He had drawn a cross with a circle around it in the middle of his paper. “Mommy, I’ve been writing prayers. Do you want to see?” On his paper were the following prayers scrawled in the most adorable 6-year-old handwriting. “God, the world is not doing good. Can you help the world get better? Thank you for making people. Thank you for making the Bible.” My son taught me a lesson about how to persevere when I was feeling stuck in a melancholy mood and could not find my way out. He showed me that I needed to look toward the light to get out of the darkness. He turned to God to lift him up with outward focused prayer and gratitude. At that moment I was not sure who was the adult and who was the child. Thank you, God, for my son who inspires me to grow in You! Submitted by Josie Flancbaum | Marley Park Resident

Let Grow Surprise

Until recently, unaccompanied trips to neighborhood parks and to Basha’s for donuts were a regular thing for our kids, but when social distancing suddenly became necessary, we felt it wasn’t wise to expect them to follow the guidelines on their own away from home. This new reality hasn’t stopped us from encouraging our kids to “Let Grow,” however. In fact, the increased time at home has provided ample opportunity to encourage more independence.

It took almost the whole first month of “quarantine” for us to establish some semblance of a consistent routine. That first week was Dysart’s spring break, so we relaxed and made the best of it. The second week, Dysart teachers and staff were preparing to launch distance learning, so we just kind of extended spring break for another week. The third week was spent fighting through the technology of accessing said distance learning since my husband and are both working full time from home and weren’t proficient in the delivery platform. Oh boy, there were a lot of tears that week…mostly mine! By the fourth week, however, we started to find a grove.

One of the most basic things we implemented that has been a HUGE help in facilitating independence in our kids is to-do lists. We started with one daily list, but it quickly evolved into separate lists for morning and evening chores, then the addition of daily educational tasks, which was later divided into mandatory activities and optional endeavors. The kids are responsible for working through their lists each day and checking things off as they are completed. They have truly risen to the challenge! Most of the time, they work through chores and required activities as quickly as possible so they can move on to the optional (a.k.a. more fun) stuff. They are even learning to play the piano using an app! If you aren’t already using checklists with your kids, give it a try! It’s such a basic concept that it almost seems silly, but it’s a technique that allows kids the freedom to manage their own time and a sense of accomplishment when they succeed in getting things done. If you’re interested in implementing #LetGrow philosophies with your kids, join the “LetGrow | Surprise” group on Facebook. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident

Community Cares

The Marley Park Community Cares Club was started by a former Marley Park resident and I became co-chair shortly after we moved to the neighborhood. She eventually moved out of the community and I’ve kept the club alive primarily through The Front Porch group for Marley Park residents on Facebook (TheFrontPorchGroup.com).

The main function of the club is to deliver home cooked (or store-bought) meals to families that are welcoming new babies, neighbors who have had surgeries or are struggling with health issues, residents with deployed family members, and residents who have experienced a death in the family. In addition to meals, we also place the signature Marley Park wooden stork outside the homes of neighbors welcoming new additions. There is no established membership in the Community Cares Club; we simply rely on neighbors to volunteer whenever there is a need. If you’re interested in participating, please join The Front Porch group on Facebook or email me at Christie@AZLifestyleTeam.com to be added to the email list.

Several people have reached out recently to ask if the Marley Park Community Cares Club is doing anything to help neighbors in need during the current COVID-19 crisis. Although we haven’t had any specific requests yet, the Community Cares Club is available as a resource for the neighborhood. If you know of a neighbor in need during this time, or if you yourself are in need, please reach out via Facebook private message, email at Christie@AZLifestyleTeam.com, or phone/text at 602-740-2313 and I will do what I can to help and to find other neighbors who can help as well. There has never been a time when coming together to support our collective community has been more important. The Marley Park Community Cares Club has always been and will always be dependent on kind and caring neighbors like YOU to participate. Marley Park is a different kind of community…a better kind of community. Thank you for being part of it. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident

Give Back

There’s something about giving back to the community that just makes you feel so good inside. That feeling is even better when shared with friends and neighbors. Sadly, this is the first May since 2013, that Marley Park neighbors will have to skip getting together to volunteer at Valley View Community Food Bank. That doesn’t mean we can’t contribute to help those in need, however! Under normal circumstances, there is always something to do at the food bank, even for the youngest helpers. Our groups usually number between ten and fifteen people, including children of all ages. This year, instead of giving time, consider sharing some of the resources available to you. I spoke with Jesse Ramirez, owner of Valley View Community Food Bank and he said that the food bank is currently most in need of canned or non-perishable fruits and vegetables, pasta, and rice. The next time you’re shopping, either at the store or through a pick-up or delivery service, add an extra bag of rice or box of pasta to your cart along with a few cans of fruit or vegetables.

12 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

These items can be dropped off at Valley View (10771 W Peoria Ave, Sun City, AZ 85351) and may be stacked on tables outside the entrance to avoid contact with people. Our next scheduled in-person community service event will have to wait until November 25th, 2020, the day before Thanksgiving. If your family would like to join us, please look for the event link in The Front Porch group on Facebook (www. TheFrontPorchGroup.com) or email Christie@ AZLifestyleTeam.com to RSVP. There is always room for another set of helping hands! Memorial Day Memorial Day, a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May, is on May 25th this year. For many, it’s a day off work and a chance to enjoy a three-day weekend. It’s also the “kick-off” to summer in many parts of the country, especially in the mid-west where I grew up, as the weather is usually just turning from cold and rainy spring into the warm and sunny days of summer. Although BBQs and days at the lake may have to wait until the COVID-19 crisis is over, I’m confident that Americans will find other ways to enjoy the weekend as it still marks the end of the school year and the beginning of summer for many. As you do so, I encourage you to pause for a moment and consider the reason for Memorial Day. Originally called “Decoration Day,” it is a day of remembrance for those who have died in military service for the United States.

Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. Poem by John McCrae |1915 Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident

You may be familiar with the tradition of placing red poppy flowers on crosses near the graves of fallen war heroes. The practice comes from the poem, ‘In Flanders Field’, written in May 1915 by John McCrae after the Second Battle of Ypres. If you’d like to do something meaningful with the children in your life this Memorial Day, consider sharing the poem with them and talking about what it means. You can also visit the Veterans’ Commemorative Plaza located on Founders Boulevard, in front of the Marley Park pool house. The VCP displays engraved pavers with the names of veterans, active duty military, and of course, some who made the ultimate sacrifice. In Flanders Field In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago, We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
