Welcome to your May issue!

It’s almost summer, friends! The weather is heating up and school will be out in just a few short weeks. We will be pulling out our giant “Rubber Dockie” and heading to Lake Pleasant soon…get in touch if you’d like to join us! You’ll be required to bring an open mind and a positive attitude about the Lake Pleasant shoreline (we can’t quite call it a beach) as well as your own beverages and something to grill. It’s not quite the same as the shores of Lake Michigan where I spent my summers growing up, but it’s still one of my favorite Arizona summer traditions!

You’ll notice that we’ve had some consistent contributors over the past few months. I cannot express my gratitude enough for these amazing neighbors who have stepped up to bring us monthly columns on their areas of expertise.

They make my volunteer “job” as assistant editor SO much easier!

in the Surprise area, include some who live right here in Marley Park!

Aside from trips to the lake and BBQs, this month also brings us Memorial Day. Please take a moment to read the articles in this months’ issue that relate to this important observance. In the words of Pete Hegseth, let’s remember that “Memorial Day isn’t just about honoring veterans, its honoring those who lost their lives.”

Food Allergy Awareness: More than the nut

May 13-19 is food allergy awareness week.

While the world is lighting up teal, I’d like to share a short story about our son, Caden. He is three years sol and has multiple severe food allergies. Last May he was home, eating watermelon, a snack he had hundreds of times before. He started coughing, I fixed him a drink.

He continued coughing and vomited once.

I SHOULD have been using an EpiPen. HERE. Before anything was scary. Before the rest of this story. A few coughs and one puke.

Nearly 100% of people given Epinephrine within 10 minutes of ingestion live. The saying is Epi First, Epi Fast and I knew it. I had done it twice before.

I also knew I had cut the watermelon myself; he had eaten it safely before and we were in our home. He continued coughing so I decided to err on the side of caution. I dosed him with some Zyrtec and pulled out his nebulizer.

It didn’t help. He continued to cough, began wheezing and vomited again. This time I reached

for the Epi and hit our emergency alarm button to request medical help. He sat in my lap willingly for the EpiPen. He spent the next 6 hours in the ambulance and ER on oxygen, Albuterol, steroids, Benadryl and Pepcid. We are so thankful this ended the way it did As a neighbor there are things you can do to help us keep Caden and other food allergy kids safe:

Eat in designated food areas at parks and common areas

•

Clean up all food garbage

•

Wash your hands after eating

•

Don’t feed a child without parent permission

•

Know the signs of anaphylaxis and call for help

Please educate yourself and others; someone’s life could depend on it.

Kindness Matters

“Family, where life begins and love never ends.” ~Unknown

Whether we realize it or not, family is the most important thing in our lives. They are by no means perfect, but they belong to us. I recently was reminded by my parents that we are with our families forever, there is no getting rid of them, and we should be treating them with the utmost respect and love. Kindness often starts in the home, and that is where it will grow the most.

I challenged everyone last month to share and I found that this was a very important challenge. It made me realize that I have so much, and I can afford to give a little back. I shared many things: time, love, friendship, resources, knowledge, etc. I know that many in our community also did this and found themselves enjoying the fact that we were bringing joy to others. That is the most rewarding feeling.

This month, inspired by the results of last month, I want to bring our focus back from the bustling worlds into our own home. I want everyone to focus on how to improve the lives of those in our families. I want us to bring kindness and love

back into our homes.

Doing good for those in our community is just as important as doing good for those in our family. We are going to be with them forever, they are not going anywhere, so why not make our time together positive? I believe in this with all my heart, so this month, I want to show my love for my family. All of us can do this. The small things are also the big things.

We can do things like doing someone’s chore, speaking kind words, playing with a sibling, or calling a parent or grandparent and saying, “I love you.” All these are simple and easy things that bring our families closer together.

I know it’s different, focusing on ourselves and our families instead of our communities, but if we are all a little kinder to those we are stuck with forever, our community will be better. A chain reaction will occur.

If we show our love to our families, as imperfect as they are, life will be that much better.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day, a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May, is on May 27th this year. For many, it’s a day off work or school and a chance to enjoy a three-day weekend. It’s also the “kickoff” to summer in many parts of the country, especially in the mid-west where I grew up, as

As you start to make plans for BBQs or days at the lake this month, I encourage you to pause for a moment and consider the reason for Memorial Day. Originally called “Decoration Day,” it is a day of remembrance for those who have died in military service for the United States.

You may be familiar with the tradition of placing red poppy flowers on crosses near the graves of fallen war heroes. The practice comes from the poem, ‘In Flanders Field’, written in May 1915

by John McCrae after the Second Battle of Ypres.

If you’d like to do something meaningful with the children in your life this Memorial Day, consider sharing the poem with them and talking about what it means. You can also visit the Veterans’ Commemorative Plaza located on Founders Boulevard, in front of the Marley Park pool house. The VCP displays engraved pavers with the names of veterans, active duty military, and of course, some who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Momspiration Inspiration for moms! (Dads welcome too.)

This month we are spotlighting an amazing mom who is a mother of three, hair stylist, photographer, painter, nursing student, and retired military wife. This month’s mom is Camry.

Early in Camry’s marriage her husband was in the Air Force. This career took them overseas to England. Camry’s husband, TJ, was deployed and Camry was left with a 2-year-old and a 6-week-old baby. Camry had planned to fly home to the states while her husband was away, but there was an issue with the baby’s passport.

Camry found herself stuck overseas with no family to help her with these small children During this time in England, Camry realized she could do extremely hard things all on her own!

This was a huge time of growth for her as a mother and as a woman. She gained tremendous amounts of confidence in her ability to care for these two sweet children and care for herself.

She became involved in the community of moms in the Air Force who also had husbands deployed. She said this helped so much to, “share in the struggle.” This was a group of

women who understood her pains and hardships of what it’s like to have a husband deployed.

Shortly after coming home from deployment, Camry’s husband retired from the Air Force and they returned home to Arizona. Camry decided that she needed to have a backup plan in case she ever needed to help support the family.

Camry took this time to reflect on her talents and decide on a career path. One day she had an experience that gave her that answer.

Camry was at a public pool and saw a child being pulled from the water. The child’s caregiver had frozen with shock so Camry immediately started giving orders to call 9-1-1 and got the child in the correct position for his body to relieve the fluid in his lungs. This experience showed Camry how well she handled emergency situations and made it clear to her that she needed to be in the medical field. Camry is currently in nursing school and scheduled to graduate this year and begin her new career as a nurse!

Home Sweet Home The term “iBuyer” refers to companies that will make a sight-unseen cash offer on your home.

Most iBuyers will either make an offer that is below market value so they can “flip” the home for a profit or they will make an offer at (or close to) market value and charge a “service fee” (typically 6-12% of the price) to build in a profit margin. When selling a home, it’s important to remember that the actual purchase price is not what matters; it is your net proceeds at close of escrow that are important.

Whether or not you should consider selling your home to an iBuyer depends on your individual circumstances. In some cases, the advantages of a cash offer with a flexible closing date may outweigh the difference in your bottom line. If you’re planning to buy another home, an iBuyer offer can remove the need to make contingency offers. If your home has deferred maintenance or is simply cluttered and busy, an iBuyer offer can alleviate the need to prepare, stage, and show the home to multiple buyers. Some Gave All My son Jason was called to serve in the army and was sent to Afghanistan in January 2009. I remember how uneasy I felt when he left.

On September 10th, 2009 my son’s troop was ambushed in the mountains of Afghanistan.

Several were shot in this ambush, one being his lieutenant, who later died from his injuries. My son was shot several times and has had to go through countless surgeries.

Receiving that phone call from authorities was the scariest phone call I have ever received. I remember the relief I felt when I finally heard his voice, even if it was only for 30 seconds.

My son has been lucky enough to have recovered almost fully from his Injuries. I always think of this on Memorial Day weekend. My family was blessed but his lieutenant’s family cries silent

tears of pain. I call this young man’s mother twice a year; on September 10th and on Memorial Day weekend.

I let her know how thankful I am for her son’s sacrifices and for my freedom. I hope that everyone can remember how truly blessed we are to live in this great country where we are free.

It may not be perfect, but we are the best country.

The Scout Corner Our family has been involved in scouting for 8 years now. Both of our boys started in first grade, as Tiger scouts. Our oldest son, Tyler, is now 13 years old and just completed his Star Rank with Troop 194. Our youngest, Max, is 9 years old and finishing up his Bear rank with Pack 194. When we started scouting in 2011, I had no idea the impact it would have on, not just our boys, but our entire family.

The BSA program is based upon the fundamental values of duty to country, duty to God, and duty to others. It teaches a respect for the outdoors and a multitude of skills that have become rare in our technological society. Our boys know how to set up a tent, cook outdoor meals, use a pocketknife and administer basic first aid. They have developed a desire to explore, understand and protect our outdoor world while camping, hiking, kayaking, and through conservation projects like recycling shoes and cleaning up parks. They have learned the value of serving others through food, clothing & toiletry drives, and serving at local food banks and retirement centers. They have learned the significance of

our flag, gained a greater sense of citizenship, and a respect for the veterans who protect our freedoms and those who gave their life for them.

All of these have made them better people, but the greatest gift scouting has given our family is that of friendship. We have developed a network of friends that have become a second family to us. It is a family that I cannot imagine raising our boys without. I know that their scout leaders care about their character development and their success, as much as we do. I have watched our oldest grow from an anxious 6-year-old, to a teenager learning to manage his anxiety, develop his leadership skills, and find his place in the world. Scouting is our village.

Surprise Troop 194 is generously supported by the Marley Park Community. We meet each Tuesday night, 7 pm, at the Marley Park Clubhouse and hold several fundraising events with the community each year. I hope you will enjoy following us here at the “Scout Corner�, as we highlight our scouts and their many achievements.

Announcements ARTIST OF THE MONTH Marley Park resident, Brooke Nassano, age 14, submitted this picture to the Fine Arts Camp held in Chandler.

She went with Radiant church but there were churches from all over AZ participating.

Brook was awarded with an invitation to Nationals which will be held in Florida this year! The painting is called “Quiet Time� and was done with acrylic on canvas.

CONGRATULATIONS! Xander Cruz was born on March 1st to Marley Park residents, Brittney and Skelly Kellar. He weighed in at 7lbsm, 4oz and measured 21inches long. Xander joins two-year-old big brother Bohde. Welcome to Marley Park Xander!

Summer Casserole

Most people save casseroles for the fall and winter but not me! I think I made this Tuna Noodle Casserole about 3 times last summer, but can you blame me? It’s so easy to whip together during busy nights and it’s so good! So good.

My hubby is kind of picky when it comes to his Tuna Casserole so to get it just perfect, I sauté the onions in butter, add milk & use a big can of cream of mushroom soup to make it creamier – can’t have a dry casserole right?!

This recipe requires very few & accessible ingredients. All you need is egg noodles, 2 white tuna cans, frozen peas, a little bit of onions, cream of mushroom soup, shredded cheese, a little butter and some milk.

Cook pasta for about 10 to 12 minutes or until al dente; drain and rinse under cold water. Sauté the 1/4 cup onions in the 2 tablespoons of butter until soft. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients except the noodles (Note: reserve 1/2 cup of cheese to add on top of the casserole). Add the noodles and mix thoroughly. Transfer mix to the prepared baking dish and sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheese. Bake for 20 minutes or until the cheese is completely melted.

While the pasta is cooking, heat a small skillet and cook the onions with the butter until the onions are soft. In medium bowl, add all of the remaining ingredients (reserve 1/2 cup of cheese for the topping) and mix well. When the pasta is ready, drain and transfer to a casserole. Add the tuna mixture and mix until combined well. Sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheese and bake for 20 minutes or until the top begins to brown. That’s it!

INGREDIENTS 1 (12 oz) package egg noodles 1/4 cup chopped onion 2 Tbsp butter 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese 1 cup frozen green peas 2 (6 oz) cans tuna, drained 1 (26 oz) can cream of mushroom soup 1/2 cup 2% milk INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Spray with cooking spray a 9×13-inch baking dish. Bring a large pot of water to a boil.

Spiritual Matters

William Shakespeare was my first and most intense literary crush. Words had never come alive, twisted my mind, played with my heart, and intellectually challenged me more than his plays and sonnets. The play that had my heart racing the most and my teenage mind swimming in pure romance was Romeo and Juliet.

How I so desperately wanted a Romeo to sweep me off my young feet! I often daydreamed of my first glance with my Romeo; a love for the ages that started with a look. The passion between us would be so powerful that we would share a kiss before we even shared our names with one another. Our parents would disapprove, of course. What did they know about true love? We would run away together and live in romantic bliss. I would give my whole heart to him and he would love me so much that he would not hesitate to give up his life for me.

It was not long after my infatuation with this play began that I started reading the Bible. My mind had a hard time absorbing that there was a man pursuing my heart a million times more than any potential Romeo ever could. He did not just love me in my beauty as Romeo loved Juliet, he loved me in my mess, my ugliness!

Romeo died for Juliet with the mindset that she was perfect. Jesus died for me knowing full well of my wretchedness, the darkest sides of me.

Romeo scaled a high and difficult wall to be with his Juliet. Amateur! Jesus came all the way down from the farthest reaches of Heaven to be with me! Now that is what I call true love! That is a love for the ages!

I also discovered while reading about Jesus that I am a sucker for happily ever after. Romeo and Juliet ends in terrible tragedy, their brief romance coming to an abrupt end. Yet, my Lord is still alive, very much active in my life. He would never leave me nor forsake me. He will be with my always. His love always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. His love never fails! How could you not give your whole heart to such a man as this?

Community Cares

There’s something about giving back to the community that just makes you feel so good inside. That feeling is even better when shared with friends and neighbors. Since 2013, Marley Park neighbors have been getting together a few times per year to volunteer at Valley View Community Food Bank.

There is always something to do at the food bank, even for the youngest helpers! We go, we work, we chat, and sometimes we even sing a few songs together! Our groups usually number between ten and fifteen people, including children of all ages. Our youngest helper has 10-month old on his momma’s back…although he was caught napping on the job! Of course, the young-at-heart are welcome and encouraged to attend as well. With diverse groups of children, teenagers, and adults pitching in, we make short order of very tall boxes of donations!
