Welcome to your April edition!

We adopted two Blue Heeler Lab mix puppies a couple of months ago and they are HIGHLY energetic. As our kids are getting older and more independent, having two six-month old puppies in the family feels a lot like having two toddlers running around again. Although April is National Canine Fitness Month, I am the one who is getting a lot more exercise these days.

I’ve always tried to stay active but having two living creatures who depend on me for their very necessary daily walks is a new level of motivation. During this season of life, I divide my time between work and my daily mom-taxi duties. Every evening during the week is filled with driving the kids to and from sports practices.

I spend way too much time sitting at my desk

and sitting in the car, so the puppies are a welcome reprieve.

I’ve found that the best time to walk the puppies is while the kids are at said sports practices.

Many of their activities are in or around Marley Park so my go-to spot for walking is Heritage Park. I like to make a giant figure-eight south of Sweetwater and then up around the baseball fields on the north side. The best part about this route is that we usually run into friends and it’s always fun to stop and chat.

If you’re looking for a way to incorporate more physical activity into your life, adopting a puppy is a sure way to accomplish your goal. Just be aware that keeping them out of mischief is another full-time job! If puppy-parenting isn’t for you, I recommend re-acquainting yourself with the beautiful parks throughout the Marley Park Community. And if you’re looking for a walking buddy, give me a shout. I’d love to meet up for a stroll!

After all, in the words of G.M. Trevelyan, “After a day’s walk, everything has twice its usual value.”

On Our Cover

Helping to care for her grandfather with Parkinson’s disease at the young age of 11 was an experience that shaped Becca Long’s desire to go into the medical field. After high school, she considered becoming a doctor, but an aunt who is a nurse pointed out that nurses are more patient-facing. Becca wanted to care for the person instead of their disease. She decided on nursing instead of becoming a doctor.

Just before graduating with her RN, BSN, Becca obtained conditional employment with Banner University Medical Center through a new graduate residency program. She began her career in April of 2020 and graduated in May, just two months into the covid pandemic. She and the other students in her class had to finish their courses online.

Today, Becca is employed at Mayo Clinic, a position she took in January. Beginning her career in the middle of a pandemic has been challenging. Clinicals in nursing school were a completely different experience than she expected. Being a new nurse is overwhelming

to begin with, but the first months of her career were especially intimidating as the pandemic unfolded. Becca had to quickly learn how to care for every kind of patient, deal with supply and staffing shortages, and layer covid management techniques on top of traditional nursing skills.

Becca acknowledges that there are times when nursing is difficult but says moving to the new hospital at Mayo has been amazing because they have so much more support for the patients and the staff. She notes that many medical professionals have gotten burned out over the past two years because of lack of support, equipment, and supplies, but points out that there isn’t a shortage of nurses, but a shortage of nurses willing to work in hospitals. Many nurses have left the hospital setting for jobs in schools, cosmetic surgery, clinical trials, or other settings that tend to be less demanding. However, Becca says she wants to stay in the hospital setting now that’s she’s at Mayo and has the support and resources she needs.

Having grown up locally in the West Valley, Becca moved to Marley Park last year with her fiancé, a police officer with PPD; they will be married in October of this year. They love the community and plan to stay here long-term.

Pet of the Month

Lemon is a one-year-old golden doodle who owns Marley Park residents, Jessica and Dustin Wood.

They knew as soon as they met Lemon that she was meant for their family. Her favorite pastimes include annoying her fur brother Otto, cuddling her human brother Harrisyn, finding sticks, and taking long walks. She’s also a fan of a good nap.

Home Sweet Home While some homeowners may be tempted to hold off until summer to list their house, you should know – homebuyers aren’t waiting.

Demand is high today as more people are trying to beat rising mortgage rates. As a result, eager buyers are entering the market or moving their plans up so they can make their purchases as soon as possible.

The most recent Consumer Confidence Survey finds that, of those surveyed, the percentage of people planning to buy over the next six months has increased substantially since last fall. The number of consumers fast-tracking their plans to purchase a home has crept up over the past three months. Air Fryer Potato Crusted Lemon Pepper Salmon Ingredients Buttermilk Whipped Potatoes 1-1/3 cup Water 1 teaspoon Salt ¼ cup Unsalted Butter, softened ½ cup Milk 2-2/3 cup Instant Mashed Potatoes 1/3 cup Buttermilk ¼ cup Sour Cream Lemon Pepper Salmon 1-1/2 pounds Salmon Filets, skin and pin bones removed Cut into 4-ounce pieces 2 teaspoons Olive Oil 2 Tablespoons Lemon Pepper Seasoning 2 Tablespoons Fresh Chives, chopped Preparation 1. To prepare the mashed potatoes heat the water to a boil and add the salt and the butter.

When the butter is melted add the cold milk and stir in the instant mashed potato flakes. Allow the mixture to sit for about a minute, then fluff

with a fork. Gently fold in the buttermilk and the sour cream. Transfer the potatoes to a pastry bag or a resealable plastic bag with a star tip if desired (you can also gently spoon the mashed potatoes on top of the salmon if you don’t want to be super fancy). It’s important the potatoes be creamy but not too loose, otherwise they won’t stay on top of the salmon, and you will have a mess in your air fryer.

2. Place your salmon filets on the air fryer rack and lightly coat the filets with the olive oil.

Season the salmon all over with the lemon pepper seasoning and pipe some of the mashed potatoes on top of the salmon.

3. Set the air Fryer to 400 F and cook the salmon for 12 minutes, if you wish your salmon to be well done, cook it for 14 minutes. This of course depends on the starting temperature of your salmon as well as the thickness.

4. When the timer goes off, remove the salmon, the potatoes should be lightly golden and the salmon should be opaque but still moist.

5. Plate the salmon and garnish the dish with the fresh chopped chives and some fresh slices of lemon if desired.

Hear Hear!

Did you know hearing trouble is the third most common chronic health condition? The CDC reports that noise above 70 decibels (dB) over a prolonged period may start damaging your hearing, and noise above 120 dB can cause immediate harm. Not sure what decibel level you’re experiencing? Here’s an easy rule of thumb: If you have to shout to hear conversation, it’s too loud.

Here are common noise hazards you may encounter every day, and how you can protect your hearing.

1. Home projects Tools around the home, including lawn mowers, leaf blowers and power tools, can be about 90112 dB. This is considered a dangerous noise, especially when you use them for long periods of time. Because home projects can take hours to complete, it’s best to play it safe and protect your hearing.

2. Live music events When music is played for large audiences, the noise level is increased to about 110-130 dB. Even smaller venues using amplification can be dangerously loud. This is why you may have experienced sensations such as ringing ears after an event. Listening to music at this volume for over an hour causes hearing loss, which is why

musicians struggle with hearing loss more than most other people.

3. Exercise classes Fitness trainers often blast music to pump up everyone for the workout. Loud music in a small room can be about 80-116 dB, which increases everyone’s risk of hearing loss the longer they’re exposed to it. You may also be endangering yourself by using ear buds to listen to loud music while working out, jogging or biking.

4. Boating/driving/motorcycle riding When driving with loud music, you may not realize the damage it’s causing, but wind noise can also be dangerous. If you’re boating, wind noise alone can be about 80-100 dB, on top of engine noise that may reach anywhere from 7090 dB. According to the American Academy of Audiology, individuals driving with car windows down for more than an hour daily are three times as likely to have hearing loss. Motorcycle riders are exposed to engine noise that can reach up to 100 dB or more, in addition to wind noise.

How to protect yourself: * Wear high-quality hearing protection * Take “quiet breaks” * Shorten the duration of your noise exposure * Use power tools and equipment outside * Turn music down Because hearing loss occurs over time, limit incidents of exposure to overly loud environments as much as possible.

Decorators Corner This Spring consider turning your outdoor space into a haven where you can escape the indoors, and enjoy the cooler AZ temperatures, fresh air, and surrounding nature. Here are some ways to enjoy your outdoor living space this season.

Use the same design principals for your outdoor space as you would for inside your home. Invest in comfortable seating and arrange it as you would your living room. A sectional, or a sofa and chairs arranged around a coffee table

encourage gatherings and conversations. Creating an easy transition from indoors to outdoors will encourage everyone in the home to come out more often and enjoy the space.

Adding an outdoor rug and accent lighting such as string bulb lights and candle lit lanterns will give your space character.

A big trend in 2022 is creating an outdoor office space. So many people are now working from home that it makes sense that the good weather will draw them outdoors. An outdoor occasional table can serve as a desk. Pair it with a comfortable chair with allweather cushions, and a lowkey extension cord to power your devices. Just remember that you might want to move back inside for those Zoom meetings!

Spring Spring is here! A time for cleansing, purification, and renewal. The smell in the air and the flowers blooming in our neighborhood can be a reminder of natural rebirth that can make anyone feel re-energized. Bask in the sunshine, embrace the cool breeze, and try not to miss out on all the season has to offer. Let’s look internally to see how to foster the energy of the Spring to reclaim energy and growth. Here are 3 ways to step into spring and start your own renewal.

First, get outside! (I know, obvious right?).

Mental health is directly impacted by natural environments. Lucky for us, we have plenty of reminders here in Marley Park of nature’s beauty.

Proximity of green space has been associated with lowered stress, anxiety, and depression. So, get out and smell the roses.

Second, movement - This is the best time of year in Arizona to be outdoors. The combination of physical activity and being in nature is recognized as having a range of significant benefits including improved mental health,

physical health, and extended life expectancy.

Some ideas include: a walk in the neighborhood, play around with your kids at one of the local parks, explore your surroundings with good company.

Third, renewal begins with gratitude. This spring, go out of your way to look for things to be grateful for. Appreciate those things and express this out loud or in a journal. Notice the small things like how great your coffee tastes in the mornings, the pleasure of having a clean sink, or hearing happy, healthy kids in your living room. There are so many things to be grateful for that are sitting right in front of you. After all, we always find what we are looking for.

Allow yourself to capitalize on the spirit of spring.
