On Our Cover April 16th is World Voice Day.

Loss of voice or a defect in voice pattern can have a profound effect on the way we relate to other people. People recognize us by the sound of our voice and categorize us by the forceful or gentle nature of our voice. Developing a speech problem at the age of thirty-five threw my life into turmoil.

When I was 35 my voice gradually became hoarse and weak, developing a strained quality to it. Visits to physicians proved frustrating as the diagnoses identified stress as the key factor. My frustration mounted as I did not feel my voice problem was stress related. While my voice deteriorated, I became more aggressive toward finding a solution. I discovered an article that referred to a neurological condition being researched by the medical community.

Discussion with physicians and neurologists lead me to a team of physicians at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. The clinic was executing an experimental treatment involving the use of Botulinum toxin (BOTOX).

Since SD is often misdiagnosed as stress related, and many individuals never receive treatment.

Many people quit their jobs, go on disability, isolate themselves, or subject themselves to years of psychological therapy. Diagnosis and treatment can open the door to a whole new way of life for people who have been suffering for years.

I feel that I was lucky in that I did not adhere to the diagnosis of stress and did my own research.

I went on to work for the Military Intelligence Center Fort Huachuca for 40 years. I am now actively retired and loving life.

During my initial visit to Mayo Clinic, the team diagnosed my condition as Spasmodic Dysphonia. They explained that SD is a rare neurological disorder characterized by involuntary spasms of muscles of the larynx.

Individuals with SD have difficulty with all verbal communication. The diagnosis prompted the team to recommend a treatment of very small, diluted amounts of BOTOX directly into the muscles of the larynx.

I noticed benefits from the injections immediately. The first noticeable sign was a decrease in the effort it took to speak. Next, I experienced a breathy and weak voice, and within two weeks my voice was close to normal.

Decorator’s Corner When we moved into our home in 2016, we made an investment to add some custom wood barn doors to close off a room otherwise used as a formal dining area of our home.

The 10-foot double barn doors and inset added a majestic and unique charm to enclose a room we now use as a music room and den. To carry on with the look, we recently made the decision to create a visual divide between our great room and kitchen. We professionally installed reclaimed wood over a pre-existing ceiling drop that matched the barn doors in the entry, creating a beam and pillar facade.

Perspective of a Teacher Mom Arizona has been wading through a massive teacher shortage for quite some time. I could go into all the reasons why I believe that the shortage won’t be seeing relief soon, but what I would like to discuss is the possibility that a computer could eventually take over the job of the classroom teacher. Does that concern you? Or, is that something you think would be a worthy solution to Arizona’s teacher shortage?

Virtual schooling has enjoyed an uptick in the last few years. Be it for health reasons, fears of bullying, convenience, mobile lifestyles, or shrinking confidence in the brick and mortar schools; virtual learning has become something that more families are choosing. It’s no longer a futuristic option, but one that is increasingly opted for, even within the walls of the brick and mortar schools.

I can see the appeal. We are becoming more afraid for the safety of our children in a progressively volatile world. Many teachers leave education after the first few years in a classroom, so there never seem to be enough teachers.

Maybe online schooling could be a logical fix?

On the other hand, it’s difficult to imagine a childhood without: friends, a great PTSA, the school mascot, pizza Fridays in the cafeteria, recess, meeting your pals in the hallways between classes, heads up seven up, popcorn parties for perfect attendance, rainy day schedule, or a hug from a caring teacher.

So, while a computer may be able to replace my lesson (in a lack luster sort of way, because my live, DeLong division lesson rocks!), a computer won’t be able to replace the life lessons of school. Nor will it be able to replace the impact of dedicated teachers.

We are currently facing an unprecedented worldwide crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Virtual schooling will likely be in place nationwide by the time this article goes to print. When this is over, will we return to traditional school or will we continue to use technology to replace in-person education? The answer remains to be seen.

We can’t control what’s happening in the world, but we can change the way we react. I’m a sucker for old movies, and one old movie that applies perfectly to our current situation is Pollyanna.

She plays a game with herself called The Glad Game. No matter what her circumstances are, like when she’s sick or hurt, she finds things to be glad about. I think that we could do this now.

Home Sweet Home Having been a licensed REALTOR® in Arizona since 2006, I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years. I’ve been through the short sale and foreclosure crisis, the advent of social media marketing in real estate, the introduction of “iBuyers” as a large segment of the market, and am now facing unknown territory with regard to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you’re considering selling your home, it would be wise to consult a REALTOR® who has experience that spans the historical ups and downs of the market. While the months of April and May are traditionally the best time to sell, we may see a market uptick in the fall because of pent-up demand from buyers who are putting their search on hold now due to this crisis.

The term “iBuyers” refers to cash investors who offer the option for home sellers to sell directly to them instead of listing their home on the traditional market. Depending on how the COVID-19 crisis affects the market longterm, iBuyers may become an even bigger segment of home buyers. iBuyers aren’t typical home “flippers,” in that they make

For some, it’s the perfect fit based on their unique needs and goals, and for others, the traditional real estate market is still the best choice. Regardless of what happens with the real estate market in the coming months, anyone considering selling should consult with an experienced REALTOR® before making any decisions. If you are considering selling to an iBuyer, be sure to contact your agent BEFORE reaching out to any iBuyers directly so that she can represent you at no cost by accepting a referral fee from the buyer.

My mom is a superhero. It’s true. I can prove it! Her powers include being multiple places at once, an energy level that will never deplete, giving complete focus and attention to whatever grandchild is in her vicinity, even when they have run her ragged, giving insight and wisdom to her adult children via the telephone while bookkeeping for my brother’s business or cleaning, and the ability to let anything go no matter how frustrating or painful. She rests completely peacefully during her sleep and never carries a worry overnight. These powers are all incredibly impressive and have astounded many an onlooker.

Even with all these great abilities, my favorite thing I love about my mom is her laugh. When she genuinely finds something humorous, she will get squinty eyes with just one eye slightly more closed than the other. She will smile with cheeks that begin to turn a rosy color and a mouth that shows most but not all her teeth.

A sound that seems something like a wheeze will emerge out of her mouth and it lasts an extraordinary amount of time. Just when we think we may need to start CPR on her due to the amount of time she’s been exhaling, a powerful Hhhhmmm…..Hmmmm…..

Hmmmm…..Ha….Haa….Haaaa will burst out!

When my mother laughs this kind of laugh, it is literally impossible not to laugh with her. If my mother is ever involved in a case study where people are challenged not to laugh after being exposed to her hysterics, it would be a scientific impossibility to refrain from laughter. It’s as predictable as a law of physics.

Of all the superpowers I hope to inherit from my mother as I grow older, I pray I inherit her laugh most of all. It changes people. It lightens their hearts. It brings joy and love to any atmosphere, no matter how heavy, sad, or uncomfortable. My mom’s laugh is her greatest superpower. That is God’s greatest and most wonderful gift to her and to the world.

Let Grow Surprise The “Let Grow Foundation,” established by Lenore Skenazy, aims to counter the culture of overprotection. My husband and I have chosen to parent with the “Let Grow” philosophies in mind and, at age 9 and 7, our kids are allowed more freedoms than most of their peers.

When we moved to Marley Park in 2013, our daughter was an infant and our son was just two years old. Since we live in one of the earliest established sections of the neighborhood, most of the children in our area are much older than ours. We’ve found that our kids have very few peers among our immediate neighbors now that they are old enough to start exploring the neighborhood on their own.

Since I’m also a local REALTOR®, I know the neighborhood well, and I know that the ONE park that ALWAYS seems to be teeming with kids is Bumblebee Park near 150th north of Sweetwater. Bumblebee is a large rectangular park surrounded by homes that face it on all sides, but at almost a mile away, it had always

seemed just out of reach for our kids to travel to independently. Last month, however, we decided it was time for them to branch out.

The kids were already familiar with Bumblebee Park, having played there with friends many times; they just didn’t know how to get there on their own. They don’t have mobile devices yet, so I Googled the walking directions from our house and printed them out. We went over the map several times, pointing out familiar landmarks as well as the location of the homes of several trusted friends, should any kind of emergency arise.

Although hesitant at first, they hopped on their bikes and headed off. I’m happy to report that they returned almost three hours later, breathless, sweaty, sun-kissed, and smelling of fresh air. They had run into some friends they knew and had made some new ones as well. I think our kids will be “regulars” at Bumblebee Park as soon as social distancing is no longer required, and my husband and I are thrilled to see them engaging in “free range” play. Pet of the Month

Falcon is a 4-year-old Peruvian Hairless. He was born in Peru and imported into the United States. He is an international champion that has shown all over Europe, Mexico and the US. He is also a bit of an angel in a dog suit.

I jokingly refer to him as my loaner dog. My Chinese Crested, Curly McBoing Boing Baldwin passed away last year, and he was my little bestie. Falcon’s amazing owner offered her dog, Falcon to me as a temporary friend as I await the arrival of my new dog, Joker, who is showing in Europe for the past year. For three months I said no, as I was afraid I would fall in love with him (I have). In April I said yes and am so thankful that I did. Falcon has been a pleasure. I should be getting my new dog Joker in a month or two and Falcon will go home to his owner, who is anxiously awaiting his return. Joker is also a Peruvian Hairless. If you see us on the walking trails or at the park, please say Hi! I am told that he has never met a dog or person he didn’t love.

Home School Help With our children at home you may be wondering how you can manage to keep them on track and be a teacher on top of all the other roles you currently have. As a parent who has homeschooled in the past I wanted to let you know what worked for me.

Get up!

I am not suggesting a 5am wake-up call, but they should get up and get going so that you are not nagging them to finish their work at dinnertime.

Set a schedule.

This will help all of you. Your children are used to routine at school and having that at home will create a new sense of normal. It will reassure them that even as their world has changed, this piece of it can be relied on.

Provide regular breaks.

Playtime is very important especially for young children. Mental breaks are just as important for the teenagers. Send them into the backyard to run around, give them some screen time. Yes I said it, let them watch a movie or play a game

during school time. Just put a time limit on it so they get back to what they need to do.

Don’t forget exercise.

This is one you should do as a family. Go for a walk, play relay races in your backyard, crank up the tunes and have a dance party. It will release tension and maybe even work off some of those extra pounds we are sure to gain during our time spent at home.

Socialize with their friends.

Skype, Facetime, texting, multiplayer online games. These are just some of the ways your children can interact with others and this is important. It will give them a break from the isolation and reassure them that they are not the only ones going through this.

The most important thing to remember is that even though your kids will have work from their teachers, they are learning constantly. Whether it is building with leogs or playing with their siblings they are still learning. Go easy on them if they have a meltdown or don’t stay on track, this is not easy for them either.
