Welcome to your April issue! When The Front Porch magazine launched in 2016, I had no experience editing a publication and I really had no idea what the content of its pages would be. I knew I wanted the magazine to by “by neighbors and for neighbors,” so I started keeping my eyes and ears open for residents with unique stories to share. Over the years, I’ve come to learn that Marley Park is truly a very rich and diverse neighborhood. I’m very grateful for all the people and families who have opened up to the community and shared their stories through the pages of the magazine. I hope you have enjoyed getting to know these neighbors as much as I have. This month’s cover story marks the fifth Marley Park family to share their adoption story with us over the years. I hope you aren’t tiring of this theme, Dear Readers. Personally, I find adoption stories fascinating and I’m compelled to reach

out these amazing families and ask them to share. Each story is so unique and so inspiring. I honestly can’t think of anything more noble and worthwhile than taking a child in need of a loving, stable home and providing that for them. If you have a unique story you’d like to share with us or if you happen to know of a neighbor with a story that might be interesting to readers, please reach out to me at Christie@AZLifestyleTeam. com or via Facebook messenger. As much as I’d like to, I’m not always able to carve out the time to write the magazine’s cover stories myself so we are also looking for volunteer writers to help with this task. This month’s cover photo is another gift from Marley Park resident and volunteer photographer, Carson Cavaletto. Carson has been so generous with his time and talents over the past few years, but we are always open to additional photographers who might be willing to help. I hope your April is full of the beauty of spring…the wildflowers in the desert are amazing this year after all the rain we’ve had. In the words of Harriet Ann Jacobs, “The beautiful spring came; and when Nature resumes her loveliness, the human soul is apt to revive also.” Get outside and REVIVE! See you on The Front Porch!

On Our Cover

Our adoption story began like many others; my then-wife and I struggled with infertility for years. As we exhausted the avenues for conceiving, we explored adoption. As first-time parents, it was important for us to avoid the confusing scenario where the birth parents could potentially play a role in our children’s lives. So instead of domestic adoption, we decided to go internationally. My mother’s family is originally from Taipei, so we applied for a program in Taiwan. Almost a year after the process started, we got a call matching us with a 2-month-old healthy baby boy. Four months later, we were on a plane to Taipei. Despite travelling for 24 straight hours, when we landed, we were wide awake, filled with anxiety and excitement; nervousness and hope. The next morning, we travelled to the orphanage where we held our son for the first time. When Quentin turned 3, it felt like the right time for him to have a sibling. Having had the experience of adopting Quentin as an infant and since we didn’t want a large age difference between him and his future sibling, we were open to adopting an older child, which would include children with special needs. Our agency asked if we were interested in adopting an 18-month-old girl born with a cleft lip and palate from China. When we saw pictures of her irresistible smile, we knew she had to be part of the family.

Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

We prepared for another flight halfway across the world to Guangzhou where we met up with our guide. We walked into a brightly-lit waiting room where a caretakers brought our soon-tobe-daughter to us. Parker cried immediately when her caretaker walked away, but Quentin tried to comfort her with a stuffed animal he had brought. Although we had thoroughly talked about adopting a new sister and how she was now part of our family, I will never forget the look on Quentin’s face when he asked “Wait, she’s coming with us?!?” as we were flying out of Hong Kong. As the years passed, Parker underwent numerous surgeries to repair her cleft lip and palate. She and Quentin are the best of “frienemies” now, as siblings typically are. Despite the bickering, I can see the strong bond between them. As I now share custody with their mother, our little non-traditional family is just that more non-traditional. Kindness Matters

“Kindness is a gift everyone can afford to give.” -Unknown

because even one extra thank you means to world to someone else.

Kindness is one of the things that make the world a better place without a lot of effort. It is seen in many different shapes and sizes and committed by all different types of people. Absolutely anyone can do it and do anything. Kindness is thinking about others for one moment of your day and helping them out.

Going with our theme that small acts are just as important as the large ones, I decided that this month’s challenge should focus on those small acts. This month’s challenge is to share. Sounds super simple, but it’s surprisingly impactful. If everyone shared just once this month whether it be a smile, a snack, a meal, a quote, our community would flourish. This sharing would help everyone. It would bring a smile to everyone’s face when they are shared with. You couldn’t tell me that when someone shares a snack with you it doesn’t make your day. Now, imagine if you shared something with someone else, it would make their day.

Last month I challenged our community on doing the small things: holding to door for someone, saying thank you, etc. I am sure that many of us did these things without thinking about it, with our mind running on auto drive. However, the people we do these things for are surely affected. I know that when I hold the door open for someone and they return the gesture with gratitude, it makes me feel good. It restores my faith in humanity. Again, it’s just the small things. Along with myself, I am sure that almost everyone in our community contributed to last month’s challenge whether consciously or not. I felt very accomplished

Home Sweet Home Having been a licensed REALTOR® in Arizona since 2006, I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years. I’ve been through the short sale and foreclosure crisis, the advent of social media marketing in real estate, and, most recently, the introduction of “iBuyers” as a large segment of the real estate market.

The term “iBuyers” refers to cash investors who offer the option for home sellers to sell directly to them instead of listing their home on the traditional market. These investors then relist and resell the homes. They aren’t traditional home “flippers,” in that they make minimal and sometimes no improvements to the property. Also, they typically pay closer to market value than typical “wholesale” investors, sometimes even offering full market value for the homes they buy. Instead of buying homes below market value, iBuyers make their profit by charging “service fees” which are written into the contract as buyer concessions. The fees can vary between iBuyers, but usually range from 6-12% of the purchase price. This option of selling to an iBuyer comes with pros and cons, as do most choices in life. For

10 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

some, it’s the perfect fit based on their unique needs and goals. For others, the traditional real estate market is still the best choice.

If you’re considering selling your home soon, it would be wise to consider both options. A REALTOR® who has experience working with iBuyers can bring you a fair cash offer for your home AND provide a comprehensive home value analysis so you can compare and decide which choice is best for you. If you decide to go with an iBuyer offer, a REALTOR® can represent your interests, often at significantly discounted commission rates since marketing costs and the need to pay the agent representing the buyer are cut out. If you decide the traditional market is still the best option, a good agent can help you prepare and stage your home for a professional photo shoot, market the home to reach the highest number of potential buyers, and provide all the expected services of a traditional REALTOR® from contract to close. The market is changing. You owe it to yourself to explore your options and make an informed decision.

Spring Recipe INGREDIENTS

For Cake: 2 cups sugar 1 1/3 cups vegetable oil 3 large eggs, at room temperature 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 2 cups plus 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 pound carrots, grated 1 cup raisins 1 cup chopped walnuts For Mascarpone Frosting: 12 oz mascarpone cheese, at room temperature 4 oz cream cheese, at room temperature 2 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar 2 tablespoons heavy cream 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt INSTRUCTIONS To make the cake: Preheat the oven to 400 F degrees. Grease 2 (9 x 2-inch) round cake pans,

line the bottoms with parchment paper, and grease the flour the pans. In medium bowl, sift together the 2 cups of flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt. Set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the sugar, oil, and eggs on medium-high speed for 2 minutes, until light yellow and thickened. Stir in the vanilla. With the mixer on low, slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ones. In a medium bowl, toss the carrots, raisins, walnuts, and the 1 tablespoon of flour. Stir into the batter with a rubber spatula. Divide the batter between the prepared pans and smooth the tops. Bake for 10 minutes, lower the heat to 350 degrees, and bake for 30 to 35 more minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in the pans for 15 minutes, turn out onto baking rack, and cool completely. Place one cake on a flat serving plate, rounded side down, spread half the frosting on the top (not the sides). Place the second cake on top of the first cake, rounded side up. Frost just the top of the second cake. To make the frosting: In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the mascarpone, cream cheese, confectioners’ sugar, cream, and vanilla together for about 2 minutes, until light and fluffy. Be careful not to over beat since it can make the frosting curdle. Source: MuyDelish.com Submitted by Ana Frias | Marley Park Resident

Spiritual Thoughts And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

If there was a gold medal given out for the person who worries the most, I am confident I would have won that thing by a landslide. My mind had a bad case of the what-ifs. What if my car breaks down on my way to work? What if I make a detrimental mistake at work and I get terminated? What if those mushrooms in the refrigerator go bad and I can no longer make the meal I was planning? What if I said the wrong thing to try to comfort my friend? What if my children end up being prone to worrying? Oh my, goodness gracious! It would be great if all this worrying occurred during the daylight hours, but the part of my brain that likes to worry preferred to party with me at night when I was trying to sleep. I found

myself with eyes shut tight in frustration, willing my mind to take a break. I got through the night and into morning with a foggy brain, chronically sleep deprived and already exhausted. I dreaded telling anyone about this affliction because of the nonsense remedies that were suggested. “Turn off your electronics an hour before bed.” “Make sure you stop eating several hours before going to sleep.” “Lavender soap is supposed to help with relaxation.” “Have you tried drinking a warm glass of milk in the evening?” I have tried every one of these magical cures with no luck, except for the warm milk. That’s just nasty! There has only been one solution that has had any success in my battle against insomnia and put me into a peaceful sleep more times than I can count. I started trusting that God would provide everything I would need for the day ahead. God will provide me with needed sleep. God will provide me with the required energy to accomplish the tasks that need to be done. There will be enough to eat, enough to drink, and, yes, enough rest for my tired body to keep functioning. Now my head hits the pillow and I sleep the kind of peaceful sleep of a person who understands her Heavenly Father knows what she needs and will faithfully provide for her every day. Natural Matters What types of cleaners are you using in your home? Have you ever wondered if they could be harmful? Chemical cleaners used in our homes have been shown to create significant health issues. Many have known carcinogenic ingredients. Some products even with a label reading “natural” or “green” can be very misleading and still contain harmful chemicals. These chemicals can contribute to respiratory issues, headaches, and breathing problems. Keeping your home clean doesn’t have to pose a danger to your health or your wallet. Though the market is filled with a seemingly endless amount of choices in cleaning agents, some of the most effective ways to clean are the simplest and least expensive.

Vinegar and baking soda are great for cleaning. Vinegar is acidic which aids in cleaning. Baking soda easily cuts through grease and grim. Vinegar in your mop bucket is great for floors and walls. Baking soda works well to remove soap scum in your shower and helps remove hard water stains. Baking soda and vinegar is great for helping to clear drains. Use a plunger during the reaction for even more clearing power. There are some great options for microfiber cleaning. Microfiber works to pick up bacteria from surfaces due to their fiber density. Some microfiber companies add silver to their cloths which aid in self-purification between uses. You can use microfiber time after time and avoid the use of paper towels to clean. Not all microfiber is equal, so research the best fit for your home and budget. Essential oils have existed for hundreds of years. Many people use oils to support their immune systems in various ways or treat minor ailments. Essential oils are also great for cleaning! Many have purifying properties and they also smell great. You can make your own essential oil sprays to replace your chemical cleaners. Add a few drops to your mop bucket with vinegar to avoid that vinegar smell. Castile soap is made of 100% plant oils and can be mixed with baking soda, used alone, or with essential oils. Try a couple of these hard working, natural and environmentally friendly cleaning recipes in your home! Submitted by Jessica Sanborn | Marley Park Resident

Momspiration

Inspiration for moms! (Dads welcome too.)

I recently launched an Instagram account called “How Do You Mom” to try and combat the negativity I had been seeing on social media platforms. I tried to think of ways I could put positivity out there and inspire other moms to do the same. “How Do You Mom” was born. The idea behind this positivity movement is to share the stories, experiences, and lessons learned from other moms. I believe that every mom has a unique story that needs to be heard. Momspiration will be quotes and inspirational stories I hear from these amazing women. I met with a mom named Brooke. Brooke is an extremely successful Hollywood costume designer. You have seen her work in the Olympics, Dancing with the Stars, StarWars, and other famous films. I sat down with Brooke and got some great advice from her. One of my favorite things Brooke said was that growing up she never remembered if her friends’ houses were clean, she only remembered how she felt when she was in their homes. As a mom of three children myself, I really appreciated this

perspective. I want my children and their friends to feel good in my home and not want to leave because I’m in the corner worrying about what mess they’re making. We want all children to feel loved and welcomed and accepted into our homes. Brooke also passed on some words of wisdom she learned from her mother. She said her mother always told her that if the mess her children made took longer than ten minutes to clean up, discipline the kids. If the mess took less than ten minutes to clean up, just clean up the mess. This reminded me of the old saying, “Don’t cry over spilled milk,” but in a way more relatable way Brooke had such a distinguished career, but her words of wisdom to me were to always put my family and children first. She said you would regret the times you put your work ahead of your children. Always put them first, it may be hard, but you can do it Brooke always tried to tell each of her children at least one thing positive they did that day. She really wanted to instill in them a great self-esteem and knew this would do it. Submitted by Hillary Hall | Marley Park Resident

Community Cares

The Front Porch Facebook group for Marley Park residents was created in 2013 as an open forum for residents to share and discuss news, information, referrals, advice, and events relevant to the neighborhood and its residents.

One of the best features The Front Porch group offers is the weekly opportunity for members to share handmade items they are offering for sale. Every Friday morning at 9:00 a.m., you’ll see the graphic shown here posted in the group. It serves as an invitation to members to post anything homemade or handmade they are selling in the comments below the graphic. Over the years, residents have offered everything from holiday wreaths, to handmade furniture, to homemade baked goods, and even elderberry syrup and homemade dog treats!

Being able to offer homemade items for sale directly to neighbors is just another way that The Front Porch group serves to bring residents closer together. By purchasing these good from neighbors, you’re supporting a small business, helping out a neighbor, and very likely making a new friend all at the same time! If you have something handmade to sell, be sure to keep an eye out for the Friday morning post and share your items with us in the comments. You’re welcome to include your business Facebook page or a link to a website or Etsy store as well. “You can’t buy love, but you can buy handmade, and that’s kind of the same thing.” You can find the Front Porch group on Facebook by going to TheFrontPorchGroup.com. The Front Porch group was established by Marley Park resident, Christie Giannetto in 2013 and is exclusively for residents of Marley Park. It has no affiliation with Marley Park Community Association, Inc. or DMB Associates Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident
