Welcome to your March issue! One of the main reasons I moved to Arizona in 2006 was for the warm climate. My daughter studied the “Five Cs of Arizona” in her kindergarten class at Marley Park Elementary School last month. They are copper, cattle, cotton, citrus, and…CLIMATE! While the five Cs served an important role in the economy in the early years of the state, climate is the only one that still has a significant impact today. This winter has reminded me of just how important climate is to our economy and our culture in Arizona. While it’s been unusually cold for the past several months, prompting me to trade in my sandals for closed-toed shoes for the first time in years, the extreme weather in other parts of the nation has made me truly appreciate our mild winters. March is shaping up to be
slightly warmer, making it a great time to get out and enjoy our beautiful neighborhood parks and amenities. Be sure to mark your calendar for the neighborhood block party at Starlight Park on the 10th (see page 16 for more information). If you’re looking for a getaway this month, be sure to check out the article on page 9 for an idea on a fun, local day-trip. St. Patrick’s Day is also celebrated in March, making it a great time to reflect on how lucky we are to live in a neighborhood where people truly connect and care for one another. Check out page 7 for Olivia Black’s #KindnessMatters challenge for March, a great opportunity to show neighbors just how lucky we are to share our community. “Whether it’s St. Patrick’s Day or not, everyone has a little luck o’ the Irish in them.” ~Laura Sommers See you on The Front Porch!

On Our Cover
At four months old, our son Jack developed a hard bump on the top of his head. It appeared overnight. His pediatrician suggested it was likely a benign cyst, but referred us to the children’s hospital to get it checked. While waiting for that appointment, Jack developed a second bump on his head. A few days later he became very sick, so we took a trip to the ER.
several holidays, and even his first birthday there. The hospital became our second home, and the nurses and doctors were our second family. Jack completed treatment, and is currently in remission. We just passed the four-year mark since he was diagnosed! He is followed very closely with routine scans and appointments, because of the high risk of relapse with Neuroblastoma. Relapsed Neuroblastoma is considered incurable, and there is no set treatment protocol in place. Jack is also at risk for secondary cancers, such as leukemia, as a result of the harsh treatment he endured. He does has some lasting effects from the treatment, such as delayed growth, mild hearing loss, speech delays, and infertility. Otherwise Jack is a very normal, happy and healthy four year old boy. We are very grateful he is here with us today! We love sharing Jack’s story, in hope to spread awareness about childhood cancer. Submitted by Melissa Turner | Marley Park Resident
After many scans, tests and procedures, we were told something no parent dreams they will ever hear; “your child has cancer”. Jack was diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma, a solid tumor cancer of the nervous system. His disease was very widespread, as it had metastasized throughout his whole body including his bone marrow. His tumor biopsy results showed he had a gene that allows his cancer to grow faster, making it harder to treat, putting him in the high risk category for treatment. His chance of survival was fifty percent. Just two days after diagnosis, Jack received his first infusion of chemotherapy. His treatment lasted sixteen months and included six rounds of chemo, stem cell harvest, a six-hour tumor resection surgery, tandem stem cell transplants, twelve rounds of radiation, and six rounds of antibody therapy. Jack spent over 150 days of his first year of life in the hospital. He celebrated Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

Kindness Matters
“Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” ~The 14th Dalai Lama
Kindness is something that people don’t always recognize. Some think it is this big thing that only certain people can do. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has seen those videos where someone who can’t get to work without riding the bus for several hours is given a car by a coworker or family member. Those acts are no more important than the small ones. This could be giving a smile to someone who seems down, giving someone a compliment, holding the door, or just saying thank you. All of these are just as important as the big acts of kindness. Last month, I challenged everyone to deliver or leave a treat or letter for those who serve our community. I’m sure many people have written a thank-you letter before, without even realizing it is a true act of kindness. Throughout the month, my family noticed that some people in our community that could use some recognition and thanks. We decided to
write them some letters and deliver some treats to them. We wrote to mailmen, firefighters, teachers, security guards, etc. It was a lot of fun and seeing the people so grateful to be recognized was amazing. I now know how much just a little thank-you can lift someone’s spirits. Now I know all of us are very busy and don’t always have time to go above and beyond to do something for someone else, but this month’s challenge is very easy to do. I would like us to focus on the small things. Holding a door for someone, saying thank you, helping someone with homework, anything to not think about yourself for a couple minutes. That is all this challenge will take! A few minutes! Everyone can do it. Even if you gave an hour of service for someone else, it would only be 4% of your day. I think that people will find themselves looking forward to these acts of kindness once they get going. I encourage everyone to just do the small things. Kindness is easy. Share your experiences and pictures in The Front Porch group on Facebook (TheFrontPorchGroup.com) with the hashtag #KindnessMatters. Submitted by Olivia Black | Age 14 | Marley Park Resident

Local Attractions My husband and I recently stayed in Bisbee, Arizona for a managers’ retreat for our businesses. We all stayed at the Bisbee Grand Hotel, a historical building that was once a boarding house. We stayed in the Garden Suite which boasted of the 1800’s Wild West. The hotel is directly above The Bisbee Grand Saloon. That afternoon, we took the Queen Mine Tour. We rode into the copper mine on the remaining rail tracks, and we were guided by a lifetime Bisbee resident who worked for the mine just out of high school until it closed in the 1970s. He was informative and humorous, and it was a fun experience. For dinner that evening we had Mexican food at Santiago’s Restaurant. I had the cheese enchiladas; my husband had the fajitas. I didn’t hear anyone in our group complain about the meal, it was great. At 7 PM that evening we followed a guide on the Old Bisbee Ghost Tour. I love learning historical context, so I absolutely loved the tour. We were walked throughout Bisbee down streets that I would have never explored without a guide. The
guide, however, seemed very unsure of his own stories and could have been a bit more knowledgeable. He may have been new. I enjoyed the tour despite the hesitant guide.
Late that night we went bar hopping. The first bar we went into, St. Elmo Bar, seemed like a good place to get beat up, so we left. We then went to the Old Bisbee Brewing Company, everyone who enjoys beer seemed to love it. I choked the beer down as best I could. I chugged some water to wash out the taste. We ended the night beneath our hotel, at the Bisbee Grand Saloon. The next morning, we did a bit of shopping. My husband and I are more about experience than shopping, but, if you’re into antiques, there are a lot of antique shops and art boutiques. I did enjoy a small shop called Bisbee Good Cakes, run by a sweet elderly couple who use whole ingredients for their cakes. They were pleasant to talk to and passionately explained their creations to us. The angel food cake was delicious. Bisbee is such a cute historical mining town with a myriad of Arizona history and is perfect for a weekend getaway. Submitted by Hannah Willett | Marley Park Resident

buyer, allowing you to stay in your existing home throughout the construction period.
As Ashton Woods closes out on the last of its spec homes, several other builders are already breaking ground in the newer part of Marley Park. If you’re considering purchasing a new construction home but wondering how to balance selling your current home with the average build time of six months on a new build, I recommend contacting an experienced REALTOR® to discuss your options. Unless you own your home outright, you’ll need to either qualify for both the loan on your existing home and the loan for the new build or you’ll need to sell your existing home first before the builder will break ground on your new home. For most people, the former isn’t an option and the latter isn’t convenient, given that it would require you to find temporary housing while your new home is under construction.
In order to facilitate this type of dual transaction, it is important that you speak to a licensed REALTOR® before visiting the new build sales offices. Builders will not allow you to have your own agent representation unless your agent accompanies you on the first visit. A REALTOR® who is representing you on your new home purchase may be able to offer a significantly lower commission rate on the sale of your home when representing you on both transactions. In some cases, the agent may be able to sell your home at zero commission. This would allow you to have an experienced agent representing your best interests throughout both transactions without costing you anything, as the commission on the purchase is paid by the builder.
There is a third option, however. There are buyers who will make a competitive cash offer for your home and allow a flexible closing date of up to nine months when purchasing new construction. An experienced REALTOR® can negotiate with the builder so that they will break ground on your new home while your current home is under contract with a cash
Even if you are just starting to consider making a move, speak with an agent who offers a free consultation with no obligation. You owe it to yourself to explore your options so you can make an informed decision.

Spiritual Thoughts
Looking in the mirror, as I was getting ready for a mid-week church service, I saw a sparkle in my eye that I had not seen in years. The music that was playing on my radio beckoned me to sing with a joyful anticipation in my heart.
As a young widow who had lost her first husband in a fatal F-16 crash, I had not had much reason to rejoice in a very long time. Grief, self-pity, and depression had reigned over my mind and heart. Time had been my enemy, not my friend, until the unexpected happened. Time began to heal me. The seconds that had slowly ticked by in my pain-filled state had also started to do their work to mend my brokenness. Sadness would always color my world, but when the light started to brighten the world around me once again, I found that my particular shade of blue could be a beautiful color. A mentor of mine, who was also widowed at a young age, gave me some great inspiration. When she was ready to date again, she prayed a very specific prayer for her next husband. “I
prayed to God for His man, in His timing, for His purpose,” she stated. Being a fan of marriage and wanting to be married again, I followed her example. Before leaving for church I knelt on my knees, closed my eyes, and whispered my request to the Lord for only His ears to hear. When I arrived at church, I was full of hope and excited for God to bring His gift to me in His timing. God had a wonderful man cross my path and bless my life once before. I had strong faith He had another wonderful man waiting in the wings for me. As I mingled amongst my church friends, I saw him. He was impossible to miss. He wore a pastel salmon-colored shirt. I joke now that he was like a shiny lure attracting all the pretty fish to him. I was instantly captivated. Mark and I were married a little over a year later. He still takes my breath away. He was the best answer to any prayer and one of the most precious gifts God has ever delivered to me! Submitted by Josie Flancbaum | Marley Park Resident

#ForSale
The Front Porch group for Marley Park residents was created in 2013 as an open forum for residents to share and discuss news, information, referrals, advice, and events relevant to the neighborhood and its residents.
Oftentimes the person you’re selling to or shopping with ends up being a friend or an acquaintance and, if it’s not someone you already know, it’s an opportunity to meet a neighbor and make a new friend!
While the group has never been primarily a swap group, one of its members’ favorite features is the weekly #ForSale thread which posts every Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. and gives residents an opportunity to sell their personal belongings to neighbors or to score a screamin’ deal on an item a neighbor is looking to sell.
The next time you are “Marie Kondo-ing” your house, be sure to look for the cluttered garage graphic (above) in The Front Porch group on Thursday mornings at 9:00 a.m. It may just be an easy way to let go of what isn’t sparking joy while sparking a new friendship with a neighbor at the same time.
Facebook is full of local groups dedicated to shopping and selling, many of them with membership numbering in the tens of thousands. While The Front Porch group is small by comparison, it can be nice to shop and sell with neighbors, as it eliminates the need to travel long distances or schedule meetings in neutral locations.

The Power of Music
“Music can change the world because it can change people.” ~Bono
in their brain which often leads to more brain activity.
Music has always been a huge part of my life. Even as a young child, I loved to sing and dance around the house with music blasting in the background. As I’ve grown, I discovered a love for creating music as well as listening to it.
Although it’s often regarded as less important than math or science, music is equally as important to academic development and achievement. Eventually, we will forget what we’ve been taught about osmosis or circle theorems, but songs speak to our soul and leave an impact that words alone cannot. Music is a powerful tool that can change the world.
March is “National Music in Our Schools Month”. Though many schools in the Surprise area have music programs, most people do not realize how incredibly lucky we are to even have that privilege. While music may seem like something trivial that we only use for enjoyment, research has shown that there are many benefits that come from both listening to and creating music. Scientists have discovered that music helps people develop emotional intelligence and emotions such as empathy and allows for a higher sense of achievement and less anxiety when performing in front of a crowd. This makes way for many opportunities later in life including public speaking skills and interactions with people. Additionally, music improves test scores and academic achievement.
For Music in Our Schools Month, I encourage you to get involved in a music program. If you’re a student, consider joining a band or a choir next school year. If you’re a parent or guardian, attend a concert or donate to one of our local music programs. Willow Canyon High School is currently looking for sponsors for their 2019-2020 Marching Band show. Visit www.nafme.org for more information on Music in Our Schools Month. Submitted by Emily Poling | Age 14 | Marley Park Resident
A study done by the University of Kansas found that in schools with a strong music program, there was a 22% score increase in English and 20% increase in Math. This is because learning to play an instrument causes the brain to work harder. Neuroscience research has found that people who learn a musical instrument and continually practice it strengthen the connections Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

Community Cares
Arbor, Bumblebee, Desert Garden, Discovery, Founders, Heritage, Hourglass, Legacy, Marley, Mosaic, Portico, Rose Garden, Starlight, Storybook, Strata, Veranda, Windrose, and Wisdom. These eighteen locations connect the Marley Park community we all know and love. With the weather turning warm again, these parks showcase something else we get excited about: Neighborhood Parties!
Every year your enthusiastic neighbors come together to organize the Springtime fun. We’ve attended parties in Mosaic, Hourglass, Veranda, Founders, Bumblebee and others. Planners draw upon the expertise of the Community Association team to plan activities that families of all sizes can enjoy. Another tool for a successful neighborhood party is the Block Party Trailer, one of our best and most versatile amenities. The trailer contains chairs, tables, ice chests, a
barbeque grill, games, sports balls, trash cans, and much more. Like the Heritage Club and the Pool house, the Party Trailer can be reserved by visiting the MPCA website. The City of Surprise is also a great resource for neighborhood parties. Fill out an application online with the City and they will provide their own party trailer, if it is available. The trailer includes a DJ and the City will reimburse up to $75 for food. Mark your calendars for March 10th and come out to meet your neighbors as Starlight, Strata, and Bumblebee for a day of food and fun. Join us 11am – 2pm in Starlight Park. The planning committee will provide hot dogs and sodas while neighbors should bring snacks or desserts to share. If you are planning to attend, please RSVP by sending a message on the event links in The Front Porch group on Facebook (TheFrontPorchGroup.com) or emailing Mark McCall at house14924@cox.net. We need to know how much food to provide so tell us how many in your family are coming and what you are bringing to share. There will also be a raffle to benefit the Veterans Commemorative Plaza and the students of Young Life who do a great job of helping at many MPCA events. For $1 per ticket you can enter for a chance to win a Las Vegas vacation (donated by Christie Giannetto), ASU athletic tickets, restaurant gift certificates, and more! Park parties are fun, but they also need a great team to do the work. Please contact Mark at house14924@cox.net if you are available to volunteer! See you in the Park!
