The Bug Guy

Ah, February in Phoenix, a time when the cacti shiver and the sun decides to play hide and seek. But you know who’s always on time and never late for the party? Bugs! Yes, those tiny six-legged critters buzzing around like they own the place. Let’s take a closer look at the hilarious world of bugs in Phoenix during February.

First up, we’ve got the ladybugs. They must have mistaken February for a fancy dress party because they show up in their vibrant red coats ready to strut their stuff. “Welcome to the Ladybug Fashion Week,” they seem to say as they pose on every green leaf they can find. After all, who needs a catwalk when you have a rose bush?

Then there’s the caterpillars, inching along like they’ve had one too many Valentine’s Day chocolates. These little guys are on a mission to nibble their way through every green leaf in sight. Their motto? “Eat, sleep, and repeat.” It’s like they’re training for a leaf-eating competition, and they take their training very seriously.

But wait, what’s that buzzing sound? Ah, it’s the bees! February seems to be their time to shine, and they’re zipping around like they’ve had one too many cups of coffee. They’re so busy collecting pollen that they seem to have forgotten it’s not summer yet. “We’re just buzzing around, making early spring plans,” they say as they dart from flower to flower.

Of course, let’s not forget about our little friends the ants. They’ve got their own February fitness routine going on as they march in perfect lines, carrying tiny breadcrumbs like they’re training for a strength competition. “One, two, lift! One, two, lift!” they chant as they navigate their way through the desert terrain.

And who can ignore the grand entrance of the butterflies? They flutter around like they’re practicing for a synchronized flying competition.

“Watch and learn, birds! We’ve got the moves,” they seem to say as they gracefully glide from one blooming flower to another. Now, you might be wondering what all these bugs are doing in February. Well, they’re simply adding some extra entertainment to our already quirky desert life.

So, next time you spot a bug in Phoenix during February, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the hilarious spectacle of nature putting on a show.

The first time making crepes can seem a little intimidating as they can seem to be fussy (in a way that a lot of French pastry can be) or that flipping something so delicate would require great skill. But not at all. These basic French crepes are surprisingly easy to make.

Prep time: 5 mins | Cook time 10 mins | Total time: 15 mins Ingredients (6 servings) 3 eggs 6 tablespoons of flour 1 cup of milk 1 pint of fresh Strawberries (or any berries of your choice) Nutella Prep Wash and slice berries.

Steps In a large bowl mix together milk, flour, and eggs until smooth.

Pour batter onto a lightly greased frying pan. Tilt and rotate the pan in a circular motion until the batter isn’t running anymore.

I find a ¼ cup of batter works best for each crepe in an 8-9 inch frying pan.

Flip over to cook the other side. Remove from pan.

Spread a thin layer of Nutella over one-half of each crepe and top with strawberries. Fold the crepe in half, covering the Nutella and strawberries, and then fold again (into quarters) Garnish with powdered sugar.

Spring Training Tickets As the winter chill begins to wane, baseball fans across the country are eagerly anticipating the upcoming Spring Training season. The Spring Training season is significant for both players and fans alike. For the players, it provides an opportunity to refine their skills, work on team dynamics, and compete for roster spots.

Additionally, Spring Training games serve as a platform for young prospects to showcase their talent and make a case for inclusion in the regular season roster.

For fans, Spring Training games offer an early taste of the upcoming season. It’s a chance to see star players in action, witness new acquisitions, and get a sense of the team’s potential for the season ahead. The atmosphere at Spring Training games is often more relaxed and intimate, allowing fans to get closer to the

action and interact with players in a way that’s not always possible during the regular season.

The Texas Rangers will play the Kansas City Royals on Saturday, February 24th at 1:00 pm at Surprise Stadium, located at 15850 N Bullard Ave. Marley Park Community Association residents have the opportunity to secure free lawn tickets to this game.

The first 400 residents who request tickets will be able to obtain tickets, providing a chance for the community to come together and enjoy a day at the ballpark. Tickets will be available starting February 5th, and residents are encouraged to act quickly to secure their spots. This event will be an opportunity for fans in Marley Park to witness their favorite teams in action as they prepare for the upcoming regular season.

Whether you’re a die-hard baseball fan or simply looking for a fun day out with family and friends, the Spring Training game between the Rangers and the Royals on the 24th will be the perfect blend of competitive baseball, community spirit, and the excitement of a new season on the horizon.

and recycle bins will continue to be landfilled until the curbside recycling program officially begins.

The City of Surprise, in partnership with Waste Management, is preparing to reintroduce a curbside recycling program. Starting Monday, March 4, recycling trucks will begin picking up blue curbside recycle bins and taking approved items to a recycling center for processing. Trash and recycle bins must be curbside by 6 a.m. and bins must be placed in the street against the curb, with the handle side closest to your home.

Residents must ensure both containers are at least four feet away from each other and from nearby fences, light posts, mailboxes or other obstacles and all vehicles are a minimum of 15 feet away from the bins. You can easily find your designated pick-up day on the MySurprise App. The app is available in app stores or online at surpriseaz.gov/mysurprise. Using the app, click on “Trash Reminders” to find your pickup day and sign up to receive weekly reminders about your pickup schedule, including changes caused by holiday weeks.

Items allowed in the recycle bins are paper (no shredded paper), approved plastics represented by the number 1 or 2 inside the recycling symbol, cardboard, aluminum or tin cans and glass bottles. All recyclable items should be lightly rinsed and completely dry before going into the curbside recycling bin. The City’s Public Works team will be regularly checking recycling bins for unacceptable materials. Homes that are not recycling properly will have educational tags placed on their containers. If residents repeatedly place unacceptable items in their bins, they will receive a violation notice from inspectors.

Over the past several months, households were asked to practice preparing and separating their recyclables. During this time and through the end of the pre-launch in February, all items in trash

The City’s drop-off recycling program will remain open until February 28 for those who want their items recycled. Residents can bring their recyclables to the Public Works North Yard, 17274 N. Litchfield Rd., on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 - 11 a.m. and 1 - 3 p.m.

Legal Advice AVOID PROBLEMS WITH IRA DESIGNATIONS For 401ks, IRAs and other qualified retirement accounts, the designated beneficiary form directs how the funds will be paid on your death.

Common problems that arise with beneficiary designations are: • When the “Estate” or no beneficiary is listed, so a probate is needed and the IRA will be not be stretched for 10 years and will be taxed at a higher rate.

• When a beneficiary dies before you, the financial company rules apply to who gets the deceased beneficiary’s share. When a trust is listed as the beneficiary, your directions are applied.

• When the designated beneficiary is a minor, not a trust for the minor, then a costly court conservatorship is need and deferred tax benefit is at risk.

• When your spouse, who is not your children’s parent, does not sign a spousal waiver, then your spouse is entitled to half or possibly all of funds.

Remember, currently, an inherited IRA must be paid in 10 years, if the beneficiary is not a spouse. Leaving a portion or all of your qualified retirement account to charity can make sense, because the charity does not pay income taxes and will receive more funds than a family member. Other assets which are not taxable can be left to family or friends.
