January 2024
Welcome to your January edition! I turned 47 last month. I’m at an age now where many of my close friends have experienced the loss of a parent. It’s something that no one desires, yet a reality that everyone must eventually face. I’ve always tried to be empathetic when these losses occur, but, like anything else in life, it’s easier to be empathetic when you’ve been through a similar experience yourself. I’ve found that losing a parent is a club no one wants to join, but those who are in it share a unique sense of camaraderie and support. My dad was golfing in late October. He was doing yard work and winterizing the house so he and my mom could prepare for their annual trek to Arizona to spend the winter. Then came a cancer diagnosis. The subsequent weeks
were fraught with uncertainty and hope as we braced ourselves for his scheduled surgery on November 1st. His recovery was expected to take 10 to 14-days. Sadly, he experienced complications that left him fighting for his life. Collectively, I spent over five weeks in Cleveland throughout November and December, visiting my dad at Cleveland Clinic and supporting my mom during this challenging time. Throughout this time of turbulence, I was profoundly moved by the kindness and support from friends who rallied around our family, selflessly bringing meals, shuttling my children to their activities, and even just hanging out playing board games to keep them company while I was away. I had countless friends reach out, including many who have experienced the loss of a parent themselves. Their stories offered hope and wisdom that helped me navigate through this difficult time. I will be forever grateful for the friendships that I’ve developed over the years in Marley Park and how those friends have shown up in a time of need. I hope the new year brings you hope, love, a deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures, and supportive friends who are there for you when you need them most. Afterall, in the words of Brigitte Nicole, “Anyone can show up when you’re happy. But the ones who stay by your side when your heart falls apart, they are your true friends.” See you on The Front Porch

The Bug Guy
As the new year rolls in, residents of the West Valley can look forward to a fresh start—and this includes taking proactive steps to keep their home free from pests. January brings mild weather and a sense of renewal, making it the perfect time to tackle pest control with an uplifting mindset. With the cooler temperatures, many pests might seek warmth and shelter indoors, making it essential to create a protective barrier around your home. By implementing simple measures, residents can enjoy a pest free living space throughout the year. One of the key aspects of pest control is preventive maintenance. This can involve sealing cracks and crevices in and around the home, repairing screens on windows and doors, and keeping the living spaces clean and clutter-free. By staying proactive, residents can limit the opportunities for pests to invade their homes and disrupt their peace of mind. Additionally, being mindful of environmental factors is important in pest control. In January, we experience a relatively dry climate, which can affect pest behavior. By understanding the local ecosystem, residents can better anticipate and address potential pest issues. Embracing eco-friendly pest control methods not only helps in preserving the natural balance but also contributes to the overall well-being of the community. Moreover, January provides an opportunity for a mindset shift toward proactive and sustainable pest control. Rather than reacting to pest problems as they arise, residents can adopt a proactive approach by scheduling regular pest inspections and maintenance. This forward-thinking attitude not only prevents potential infestations but also promotes a sense
4
of empowerment and control over the living environment. Furthermore, staying informed about pest control best practices and advancements is uplifting in itself. Taking the time to learn about new methods, products, and technologies can empower residents to make informed decisions and stay ahead of potential pest threats. This knowledge empowers individuals to be proactive and resilient in the face of pest challenges. Ultimately, the start of the year in the West Valley of Phoenix provides an uplifting opportunity for residents to embrace a positive and proactive approach to pest control. By fostering a sense of community, staying informed, and taking ecofriendly measures, residents can create a cleaner, more harmonious living environment. With the right mindset and actions, the West Valley can remain a welcoming and pest-free oasis for all who call it home. Submitted by Estrella Mountian Pest Control

Blood Drive
On Tuesday, January 16th, at the Marley Park Heritage Club, the Marley Park community will host a bood drive from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. This is an urgent call to arms, in response to the declining number of blood donors across America. The need for blood is a constant reality. It is a life-saving resource with no substitute. Every day, people in our community find themselves in desperate need of blood transfusions, from accident victims to cancer patients. Every pint donated is a potential lifeline, an offering of hope, a gift of life. As someone who has witnessed firsthand the critical importance of blood donation, I can attest to the awe-inspiring power of this simple act. Just this past November, my father underwent major surgery. A complication led to internal bleeding, and his life hung in the balance. It was the donated blood that flowed into him, unit after unit, that kept him alive. Witnessing this, I gained a profound appreciation for every individual who has ever rolled up their sleeve to donate. The blood that they gave, in moments of their own health and strength, flowed into my
father when he was at his weakest, giving him the chance to fight another day. Your donation can write the next chapter in someone’s story. To schedule an appointment, please visit donors.vitalant.org and use the Blood Drive Code “Marley”. Advanced appointments are encouraged to ensure a smooth and safe donation process. For any questions, please reach out to Vitalant at 877-25-VITAL (877-2584825). As a token of appreciation, all donors will receive a voucher for free admission to the 36th annual Arizona Renaissance Festival in February/ March. To those who have never donated before, consider this your personal invitation. Giving blood is a selfless, heroic act that can make a significant difference in the lives of patients and their families. You possess the power to give the gift of life, and your community needs you now more than ever. Remember, we’re not just asking for blood. We’re asking for a piece of your humanity, a testament of your compassion. Join us at the Marley Park Blood Drive and be a part of this life-saving mission. Resolutions
The tradition of making New Year resolutions has a long and diverse history, rooted in various cultural and religious practices that span centuries. The concept of setting goals for selfimprovement and reflecting on personal growth as the year comes to a close is a common thread that weaves through different societies and time periods. One of the earliest recorded instances of New Year resolutions can be traced back to ancient Babylon, around 4,000 years ago. The Babylonians celebrated the New Year with an 11-day festival called Akitu, during which they made promises to the gods to repay debts and return borrowed objects. These promises were considered a way of starting the year with a clean slate and ensuring the favor of the gods. In ancient Rome, citizens would make promises to the god Janus, the deity of beginnings and transitions, at the start of the year. These resolutions were seen as a way to seek Janus’s blessings for the year ahead and to foster personal and moral development.
emphasizing the importance of self-discipline and improvement. The secularization of New Year resolutions gained momentum in the 19th century, as people began to focus on personal development and secular goals rather than strictly religious ones. In the modern era, the tradition of making New Year resolutions has become a global phenomenon, with people from various cultures participating in the practice. While the resolutions themselves may vary, common themes include health and fitness, financial stability, personal relationships, and career advancement. The tradition has also been influenced by the rise of self-help literature and the wellness movement, which promote the idea of continuous selfimprovement. Despite its long and varied history, the concept of New Year resolutions remains a powerful and enduring tradition. It reflects a universal human desire for growth, improvement, and the opportunity for a fresh start as a new year begins. Whether rooted in ancient religious practices or modern secular ideals, the tradition of making resolutions continues to be a meaningful and culturally rich way for individuals to set intentions and strive for a better future.
During medieval Christianity, the practice of making resolutions became intertwined with the concept of repentance. As the Feast of the Circumcision, a Christian holy day, fell on January 1st, believers would reflect on their sins and resolve to lead a more virtuous life in the coming year. This religious association with New Year resolutions persisted through the centuries. The tradition evolved further during the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe. Early Puritans in America embraced the idea of selfexamination and resolution-setting, 8

Wine Tasting 101 Wine tasting is a sophisticated and enjoyable activity that allows enthusiasts to explore the diverse world of wines. Whether you are a seasoned connoisseur or a novice eager to learn, adhering to certain dos and don’ts can enhance your experience and help you appreciate the complexities of each sip.
Firstly, one should approach wine tasting with an open mind and a willingness to explore. Do take the time to observe the wine’s color, noting its intensity and clarity. Swirl the glass gently to release the aromas, allowing you to delve into the nuances of the bouquet. Take your time to savor the aroma before moving on to the tasting stage. This sensory journey contributes significantly to the overall enjoyment of the wine. Do cleanse your palate between tastings. Water and unsalted crackers are ideal for neutralizing your taste buds and preparing them for the next wine. This practice ensures that each wine is experienced in its truest form, without lingering flavors from the previous sample influencing your perception.
When tasting, focus on the fundamental elements of wine: acidity, tannins, sweetness, and body. Don’t be afraid to express your thoughts and impressions, but remember that taste is subjective. Embrace the diversity of opinions within your group, as it adds depth to the collective experience. It’s crucial to handle the glass properly to preserve the wine’s temperature. Hold the glass by its stem to avoid transferring body heat to the wine, which could alter its characteristics. While tasting, refrain from wearing strong fragrances, as they can interfere with the subtle aromas of the wine. Similarly, don’t rush through the tasting process. Take your time with each wine, allowing it to unfold on your palate and appreciating the craftsmanship that went into its production. Wine tasting is an art that demands mindfulness and appreciation. By following these dos and don’ts, you can elevate your wine tasting experience, developing a deeper understanding and connection with the captivating world of wines.

Legal Advice WHAT A LEGAL WILL NEEDS The Last Will and Testatement is the document that allows courts to re-title accounts and assets which are in your name (not a trust) and which do not have a beneficiary designation. • If you are leaving assets to adults (not minors), then you can use beneficiary designations and avoid probate. A Will is still a good idea to have as a backup for any account without a beneficiary; either because a beneficiary was not listed or a financial company lost the beneficiary designation. • If your spouse has children which are not also your children, the Will also can assure that your spouse’s half of the community property goes to you. Otherwise, intestate laws apply and your spouse’s children will be entitled to one-half of the community property and one-half of your spouse’s sole and separate property. Be sure to keep your Original Will because a
10
copy of the Will requires a formal court probate hearing to present evidence that the Original Will was not revoked. Wills need two witnesses and a specially worded affidavit so the Will can be probated without a hearing. A handwritten Will does not need witnesses or a notary if all of the dispositive provisions are in your handwriting and all pages are originals.

Home Sweet Home Has your house been sitting on the market a while without selling? The supply of homes available for sale is still far lower than what we’d see in a normal year. That means buyers have fewer options than they usually would, so your house should be an oasis in an inventory desert. So, if homebuyers have limited choices and your house still hasn’t sold, there’s a reason why. Let’s break one potential sticking point that may be turning buyers away: your asking price. Especially with today’s higher mortgage rates already putting a stretch on their budget, buyers are being a bit more sensitive about price. As a recent article from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) says: “If you are serious about selling your home now, don’t get greedy with the asking price. This is still a seller’s home market as there simply aren’t enough affordable homes for sale in many parts of the country. But with average 30-year mortgage rates above 6%, buyers are much more price-sensitive than they were a year ago.” While you want to maximize the return on your investment when you sell your house, you also need to be realistic based on current market conditions. The simple truth is your house is
only going to sell for what people are willing to pay right now. This can be a hard thing to accept. Especially since emotions can run high during the selling process, which makes it harder to be objective. But it’s important to acknowledge that a bigger-than-expected price tag deters buyers and may make them dismiss your house as a possibility before even seeing it. And if no one’s looking at it, how will it sell? If you want to get your house sold, you’ll need to do something to spark interest in your home again. That’s where a local real estate agent comes in. They’ll balance the value of homes in your neighborhood, current market trends and buyer demand, the condition of your house, and more to find the right price for your house, so you can close this chapter and start your next one. While it’s true there aren’t that many homes available for sale right now, your home’s asking price still matters. And, if it’s not selling, it may be priced too high. Money Matters Saving money for retirement is a critical financial goal that requires careful planning and discipline. Here are some key strategies to help you effectively save for retirement: • Start Early: The sooner you begin, the more time your investments have to grow. Having a clear target will guide your savings strategy. • Create a Budget: Track your income and expenses to identify areas where you can cut costs. Allocate a portion of your income specifically for retirement savings. Creating and sticking to a budget ensures that you prioritize saving for the future. • Take Advantage of Employer-Sponsored Plans: If your employer offers a retirement savings plan, such as a 401(k). These plans often include employer contributions and provide tax advantages that can boost your savings. • Maximize Contributions: Contribute as much as you can to retirement accounts.
54 Years
• Diversify Investments: Spread your investments across different asset classes, such as stocks, bonds, and real estate, to reduce the impact of poor performance in any one area. • Take Advantage of Catch-Up Contributions: If you’re age 50 or older, you may be eligible for catch-up contributions to retirement accounts, allowing you to contribute additional funds beyond the regular limits. • Regularly Review and Adjust: Periodically review your retirement plan and adjust your contributions and investment strategy as needed. • Emergency Fund: Maintain an emergency fund to cover unexpected expenses, so you’re not forced to dip into your retirement savings during unforeseen financial challenges. • Seek Professional Advice: Consider consulting with a financial advisor to ensure your retirement plan aligns with your goals and risk tolerance. Professional advice can help optimize your strategy and address any unique aspects of your financial situation. Remember, saving for retirement is a longterm commitment. Consistency, discipline, and informed decision-making are key to building a solid financial foundation for your retirement years.

Adopt or Shop? The decision to welcome a new pet into your life is a significant one, and the choice between adopting from a shelter and buying from a breeder comes with its own set of merits. Understanding the strengths of each option can help potential pet parents make an informed decision based on their preferences, values, and lifestyle.
Adopting a pet from a shelter is a compassionate choice that can bring immeasurable joy to both the adopter and the adopted. Shelters provide a haven for animals in need, offering a second chance to those who may have faced neglect or abandonment. By choosing adoption, individuals not only give a loving home to a deserving pet but also contribute to the broader effort to address the issue of pet overpopulation and reduce the number of animals in shelters. On the other hand, purchasing a pet from a breeder can appeal to those seeking specific traits, appearances, or lineage. Reputable breeders follow responsible practices, ensuring the health and well-being of the animals they raise. This option may be suitable for individuals with particular preferences or those who require predictability in terms of size, temperament, and potential health issues associated with specific breeds.
shelters are typically more affordable and often include vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and other essential veterinary care. Conversely, buying a pet from a breeder can be more expensive, considering the initial purchase cost and potential additional expenses related to veterinary care and other necessities. The element of surprise versus predictability is another factor to consider. Shelter animals often have mixed breeds, resulting in unique combinations of characteristics that can bring unexpected joy and variety to a household. On the other hand, purchasing from a breeder allows for more predictability in terms of the pet’s appearance, temperament, and potential health issues. The choice between pet adoption and buying from a breeder is a personal one that depends on individual preferences, values, and circumstances. Both options offer the opportunity to provide a loving home for a pet, and each comes with its own set of merits. By carefully weighing the factors that matter most to them, potential pet parents can make a choice that aligns with their values and ensures a fulfilling and harmonious companionship.
Financial considerations also play a role in the decision-making process. Adoption fees from
