Welcome to your February edition! It’s February, the month of love! Whether you’re a fan of Valentine’s Day or believe it to be an over-commercialized holiday created to peddle flowers and chocolate, you can still go forth with the spirit of love in your heart this month. Valentine’s Day is not necessarily about love between couples. It can also be about love between neighbors, friends, siblings, children, and parents. According to Gary Chapman, author of “The 5 Love Languages,” love can be expressed and experienced through gifts, quality time, words of affirmation, acts of service, and physical touch. His book asserts that we each have one primary and one secondary love language, and we can understand another person’s love language by observing how they express love to others…or, by simply asking! Consider challenging yourself this month to learn the love languages of the significant people in your life. We’ve all been taught the “Golden Rule,” to treat others how you would like to be treated, but there is also the “Platinum Rule,” which is to treat others as THEY would like to
be treated. I’ve learned over the years that love languages are best practiced with the Platinum Rule. Your primary love language may not be the same as someone else’s! Here are a few ideas for manifesting love this month: • Gifts do not need to be expensive or even purchased…deliver cookies to a neighbor! • Quality time is often our rarest commodity these days. Set aside an afternoon to spend with your kids and let them choose the activity. • Sometimes words mean more than you think. Tell a co-worker how much you appreciate them. • Acts of service are a fantastic way to show love to anyone in your life. Mow your neighbor’s lawn or wash your spouse’s car. • Physical touch can be expressed in many ways. Sometimes a hug or a simple hand on a shoulder can convey a message of love when it’s needed most. In a world where political views, religious affiliations, and even parenting choices, can cause tensions to run high, we need to remember, in the words of Paul McCartney, “In the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.” See you on The Front Porch!

Lydia was 15 months old when Samantha learned of her existence. She had been removed from her biological mother due to neglect and placed in a foster home in Michigan. Lydia’s father, Samantha’s brother, was deemed unfit to care for her as well, so Children’s Protective Services in Michigan reached out to Samantha through their kinship care program, which aims to place children with family members whenever possible. Samantha was elated to learn she had a niece, but heartbroken to hear her story. She and her husband Matt didn’t hesitate to open their hearts and home to Lydia, but the “system” doesn’t work fast, and they spent over two years going through the process of becoming a certified foster home and a viable placement for Lydia. When they finally completed the lengthy series of steps to qualify as Lydia’s kinship foster family, the Michigan family court judge returned her to her biological mother. Samantha and Matt were devastated.
an unaccompanied minor. Lydia arrived the next day with a head full of lice and nothing but the dirty clothes on her back. Now, over a year later, Lydia is thriving in Samantha and Matt’s home. Their two children, her cousins, have come to think of her as a sibling. Despite having zero exposure to typical pre-school skills, she has caught up to her peers and is doing well in school. The Arizona Department of Child Safety is working with Michigan CPS with the goal of permanent adoption into their family. In addition to their own two children and their niece, Samantha and Matt have also opened their home to three beautiful German Shorthaired Pointers, the most recent addition having been adopted after she was dumped by a breeder due to health issues. It’s clear that the love in Samantha and Matt’s home and hearts truly has no limits! Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident
Less than two years later, Michigan police found Lydia sleeping in the backseat of her mother’s car. Her mother was charged with numerous drug related crimes and a court date was set to determine if Lydia should be returned to foster care. To avoid having Lydia placed in another foster home, her biological parents agreed to fly her to Arizona to live with Samantha and Matt. Jumping into action before Lydia’s bio parents had time to change their minds, Samantha and Matt purchased a one-way ticket to Arizona for

Thoughts from a Teacher/Mom We are halfway through the 2019/2020 school year, which means we are close to the beginning of many upcoming kindergarteners’ school careers. I remember being so nervous, for both of my children, as their time for kindergarten, edged near. Being an educator, I may have worried about things, that non-educator mamas, didn’t even consider. First, I packed them a lunch, so that they could practice a few things...right there at our kitchen table! I set a timer for 15 minutes (sadly, that’s about all the time they get to eat at school) so that they could see what having to devour their food in a limited time was like. We worked on using hand sanitizer, opening packages and juice boxes, and discussed eating first and socializing
with friends second. We discussed chewing food carefully and not to be jumping around (or laughing) because I didn’t want choking to be an issue. I’ve seen too many children not eat enough of their lovingly packed lunches because of the above-mentioned obstacles. Next, I made sure that my kiddos knew how to tie their shoes before school started. As a teacher who has taught kindergarten, I’ve tied about 3 billion shoes! Now, that’s a slight exaggeration, but it sure feels accurate! In all seriousness, you’ll have to trust me...you don’t want your child’s shoes to be untied in the restrooms (think about that for a second)! If your kiddo can’t tie their shoes before kinder starts, I implore you to think about velcro during the week. You can help them to keep practicing the laces on the weekends, until they’ve got it. Your child’s teacher will thank you! Lastly, among the obvious things that almost kinder kiddos should have beforehand to make things more smooth for them as they start out (letter sounds, name writing, numbers 0-20, holding a pencil), I think it’s equally important to make sure that children know how to reach their parents/guardians, should that need arise. It’s important to make sure that your kids know your first and last name, along with your phone number. When I was in kindergarten, I remember having to learn those bits of info, along with my address, in class. That isn’t something that most schools do anymore, so think about adding that to your child’s to-do list before Kindergarten starts, just in case. That’s a wrap for this teacher-mom’s perspective! Community Cares February is the month of LOVE, and the Marley Park Community Cares Club is a great way to show love toward neighbors in a very practical way. The club was started by a former Marley Park resident and I became co-chair shortly after we moved to the neighborhood. She eventually moved out of the community and I’ve kept the club alive primarily through The Front Porch group for Marley Park residents on Facebook (TheFrontPorchGroup.com). The main function of the club is to deliver home cooked (or store-bought) meals to families that are welcoming new babies, neighbors who have had surgeries or are struggling with health issues, residents with deployed family members, and residents who have experienced a death in the family. In addition to meals, we also place the
signature Marley Park wooden stork outside the homes of neighbors welcoming new additions. (Marley Park resident, Olav de Vlieger graciously took over this task from former resident Bill Adams recently.)
In 2019, the Marley Park Community Cares Club delivered over 100 meals to twenty Marley Park families! Although we are an official Marley Park club, we have no meetings and no official membership roster. Meal signups are posted in The Front Porch group on Facebook and emails are sent to everyone who has contributed in the past. If you’re interested in participating, please join The Front Porch group on Facebook or email me at Christie@AZLifestyleTeam.com to be added to the email list.
The Marley Park Community Cares Club is one of my favorite Marley Park traditions. It has always been and will always be dependent on kind and caring neighbors like YOU to participate. Please help us keep come see our large selection of outdoor this wonderful neighborhood accessories tradition alive by committing to sign up for just one meal for a Marley Park family this year. Happiness Matters “The key to having it all is knowing you already do.” ~Unknown The new year is a time for reflection and reevaluation, deciding what’s important, and figuring out what doesn’t make the happiness cut. January has flown by and it’s already February. It sometimes seems difficult to find time to focus on goals and resolutions amidst our busy day-to-day lives, but I personally have been trying to focus on last month’s happiness challenge, serving others. When I engage in helping and serving others, I truly find myself feeling happier and more fulfilled in life. In the spirit of the quote above, I’d like to suggest keeping a daily gratitude journal for the month of February. I know it sounds like a cliché thing to do, but I challenge you to try it for a month and see if it doesn’t lift your spirits and help you to feel happier and more content with your life. In this world, we are surrounded by distractions, negative news, and sometimes even negative
8 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
people. It can be difficult to avoid getting caught up in all the negativity. However, keeping a gratitude journal will help you look past the bad and focus on all the good and positive things in our world. There is truly something to be grateful for every day. It can be as simple as waking up in the morning, enjoying the green grass and beautiful weather on a walk, living in a safe country that is protected by a strong military, the educational opportunities we are provided, the people who love us, or access to healthy food and clean water. This month, focus on the good. Like the quote above, we have it all; we just need to look. If you aren’t happy with your circumstances, start a gratitude journal. If you are happy, keep a journal anyway and you might find yourself feeling even happier! After all, “Gratitude turns what we have into enough.” ~Aesop Submitted by Olivia Black | Age 15 | Marley Park Resident

Spiritual Thoughts
An obnoxiously loud chirp caused my husband and me to sit straight up in bed. We looked at each other wide eyed for a second until our brains caught up with our racing hearts. Then we both groaned in exasperation at the same time. It was the dreaded sound of a smoke alarm that required a battery to be replaced!
I have a theory that the people who design smoke alarms must have a funny sense of humor. I bet they thought it would be hilarious if the low battery alarm would only sound in the middle of the night causing millions of people to be startled out of a deep sleep and roam around the house like bounty hunters searching for the offending device. Very funny guys, very funny! We crawled out of bed and took turns standing by different smoke detectors. It is amazing how difficult it is to determine the location of that sound considering the decibel of the alarm when it chirps. In our search, we discovered it was not actually a smoke detector making the noise but our carbon monoxide detector! I was ready to grab our three kids and run outside in the
10 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
freezing cold with them to escape the deadly gas. Thank goodness I have a level-headed husband who knew to read the back of the detector to interpret what kind of alarm it was. There were three different kinds of chirps for this detector: high carbon monoxide levels, low battery, or the age of the device. Each of these alarms varies in length. The chirp we heard was thirty seconds apart which meant our detector was ancient and needed to be replaced. If it was not two o’clock in the morning and freezing outside, I am sure we both would have taken our revenge on the machine by beating it to pieces outside in our backyard. When the whole ordeal was over and we were settled back in our bed, I reflected on how my husband and I worked together as a team to solve the problem. This was not the first problem we had to solve together, nor will it be the last. However, we always work through difficulties together, building each other up and using each of our individual strengths to make our approach even stronger. I like to believe this dynamic is why God made marriage. Submitted by Josie Flancbaum | Marley Park Resident

Let Grow Surprise Lenore Skenazy was labeled the “worst mom in America” by the media after allowing her nine-year-old son to ride the subway alone. The experience inspired her to start the blog “Free Ranch Kids,” write a book by the same name, and establish the “Let Grow Foundation,” which aims to counter the culture of overprotection. If we are Facebook friends, you’ve probably seen me post with the hashtag #LetGrow. My husband and I have chosen to parent with the “Let Grow” philosophies in mind and, at age 9 and 7, our kids are allowed more freedoms than most of their peers.
Our son’s hair grows faster mold on soggy bread, and once he started school it became nearly impossible to find the time for regular haircuts. Since there is a salon within walking distance from our house, we recently decided it was time to pass this responsibility on to him. The first time he went on his own for a haircut, we walked him through making an appointment via the salon’s app and explained the concept of a 20% tip. He got a great haircut for $9.00 because of a back-to-school special (normally $15), but only tipped $1.00, so when he got home, we sent him back to the salon to tip the stylist another $2.00. The experience taught him about the importance of making an appointment to avoid waiting, the math concept of percentages, and the etiquette of tipping on the full price of a discounted service. Of course, his little sister tagged along and learned all these lessons as well.
Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
Heading to the salon on their own is now a regular thing for our kids and they enjoy the freedom and responsibility. It also helps that they stop at Basha’s for donuts on the way home! It’s not uncommon for friends and neighbors to see our kids out and about and they’ll usually send me a message saying “I ran into your kids at the store” or sometimes even snap a photo and send it to me. I love getting these snippets of their independent adventures in the neighborhood and knowing that the eyes of our “village” are on them as well. If you’re interested in implementing some of the #LetGrow ideas with your kids, look for the group called “LetGrow | Surprise” on Facebook. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident

Recipe of the Month If you’ve known me since at least 2017, you probably know that I lost 70 pounds doing the “keto” diet. While I don’t claim to be an expert on the diet/lifestyle, I did amass a nice collection of favorite recipes during the 18 months I spent in ketosis. Although I haven’t been strict “keto” for several years now, I have managed to keep the weight off…well, most of it…by continuing to work those recipes into our family’s monthly meal rotation. Most of the recipes I use are extremely simple…often just three or four ingredients. Some are recipes I’ve created myself and others are recipes that I’ve adapted from their “non-keto” original versions. One of our family favorites is called “Salsa Cream Cheese Chicken.” The ingredients are… you guessed it…salsa, cream cheese, and chicken! I use El Sol Homestyle Organic Salsa from Costco (I believe they carry it as Sam’s Club as well). Real homemade salsa would be even better, if you have the time and talent, but the El Sol brand is the closest I’ve found to homemade.
Philadelphia brand that comes in 8oz blocks) and place them on top of the salsa. I use two of the 8oz blocks, but again, you’ll have to use your judgment. That’s it! Bake the whole dish, uncovered, at 450° until the chicken is cooked through, usually about 25 minutes. Serve with green beans or salad for a keto-friendly meal or add tortillas and rice for carbs. Enjoy!

Pour salsa over the chicken. I use about half of the 50oz container from Costco, but you’ll have to use your judgment here. The Front Porch We took our kids skiing at Snow Bowl for the first time when they were three- and five-years-old. Since then we’ve made it a family tradition to go skiing on Super Bowl Sunday. To those of you who are football fans, that might seem slightly sacrilegious, but we think it’s the perfect day to go because the slopes aren’t crowded, and lift tickets are discounted. Our kids take the all-day lessons that include lunch and hot cocoa and we enjoy a mostly kid-free day on the slopes. Lessons end at 3:00 and we have one hour before the lifts close for them to show us their newly acquired skills. Because we only go once a year, I always buy their snow gear at garage sales or second-hand stores. It doesn’t make sense to invest in new stuff they will only wear once and will outgrow by the following year. Over the years, I’ve kept the stuff they’ve outgrown and have made it available for neighbors to borrow for their kids when they want to go up north to go sledding or skiing. A few neighbors have also donated outgrown snow gear to what has been lovingly dubbed the “Snow Gear Lending Library.” This
year I also purchased, secondhand of course, a few infant-sized snowsuits since I’ve had quite a few requests for infant sizes in the past and didn’t have them available.
If you’re thinking of heading up to Arizona snow country this year, but don’t have the gear for it, message me on Facebook or text me at 602740-2313. Our “Snow Gear Lending Library” bin that we store in the garage is stuffed full of almost a decade’s worth of outgrown kids’ winter cloths as well as a handful of adult sizes. We even have a separate bin of boots in various sizes as well as hats, gloves, and scarves. In the true spirit of Marley Park neighborliness, you’re welcome to come dig through the bin, take what you need, and leave it on #TheFrontPorch when you’re done!
