On Our Cover
Volleyball was Haleigh’s first love…until she met Bryan. Originally from Hawaii, Bryan was a teacher and high school volleyball coach in Southern California when the two first met, but his career quickly advanced to collegiate level coaching at Cal State Bakersfield. Haleigh was a dual NCAA Division I volleyball star (indoor and beach) at Long Beach State before graduate school took her to Clemson in South Carolina where she earned her first master’s degree and pursued a PhD in Public Policy. She and Bryan weathered their relationship through the distance and were reunited when Haleigh moved back to California just before their wedding in 2015. As newlyweds, Haleigh and Bryan moved to Tennessee where they were hired together as assistant volleyball coaches at Lee University. Haleigh earned her second master’s degree
in Business Administration at Lee. The couple also welcomed their daughter Kaia before they relocated again; this time to Surprise, Arizona. Just months after Ottawa University opened in Surprise, the couple was offered coaching jobs for Ottawa’s brand-new beach volleyball program. Together, they recruited over twenty student-athletes from around the nation and built the program from scratch. They went 23-4 their first season and won the NAIA National Championship in the spring of 2019, just months after welcoming their son, Owen, to the world. An avid researcher, Haleigh knew they wanted to live in Marley Park before they even arrived in Surprise. They initially rented a home here, but several months before the expiration of their lease, their dream home came on the market and they seized the opportunity to settle permanently in the community they had already grown to love. They closed and moved into their new home just before Thanksgiving and truly enjoyed spending their first Christmas as a family of four in a home of their own. When coaching and parenting two toddlers isn’t keeping them busy enough, Haleigh works as an adjunct professor at Ottawa and the couple also manages an indoor sand volleyball club in Peoria. Despite being two of the busiest people I know, Haleigh and Bryan always seem to have time to welcome others into their home for friendship and fellowship. Getting to know them has been a pleasure and a privilege and I’m grateful to count them as neighbors and friends. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident

Geocaching Going on a Treasure Hunt
You’ve probably heard of geocaching, but you may not know exactly what it is. Geocashing is a worldwide, real-life treasure hunt. To participate, simply register online for free or download the geocaching app. After you create an account and enter your area code, it will give you the actual coordinates of hidden caches (small containers) and the hints to find them. You will then use the GPS on your phone to lead to you the hidden treasures. Geocaches often contain log sheets so you can record your team’s name, but the best ones contain small knick-knacks or toys. Once you find a cache, you are welcome to keep the item inside (not the log sheet) if you replace it with something of equal or greater value. The item must be non-perishable and no bigger than a half-dollar. There are hundreds of caches hidden in Surprise! To properly geocache, you must be stealthy. You don’t want to look like a crazy person who has lost their keys in the park or have someone call the police because you’re snooping around too close to other people! Once a cache is found, you can log in on your account to gain points for your team. You can also leave comments for the person who hid it, informing them of an item change, if it was easy/hard to find, or if the cache has surfaced for muggles to find. There are a lot of hidden caches around Surprise, but there is only ONE in Marley Park! Making your own cache is a fun project idea to do with the kids. Once you create one and hide it, you can upload its coordinates online and give any hints you think appropriate. Since we have ample parks and fun areas to hang out, the Marley Park community would be the perfect place to have more caches! 6 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
Winter is the best time of the year to get outdoors, so why not create and hide a geocache! It’s a free activity and you can watch your kids’ eyes light up when you tell them you are going on a treasure hunt! Or better yet, you’re creating a treasure hunt! Happiness Matters “The most important thing is to enjoy your life - to be happy - it is all that matters.” ~Audrey Hepburn
In 2019, I was asked to contribute a monthly column to The Front Porch magazine with the theme #KindnessMatters, centering around ideas and suggestions for increasing intentional acts of kindness in our daily interactions with our families and our community. I truly hope that you enjoyed the articles and were able to implement some of the ideas into your life. For 2020, I have been asked to contribute a monthly column once again, this time with the theme of finding ways to intentionally increase happiness in ourselves and others. As we begin a new year, the idea of establishing new year resolutions is at the forefront of many people’s minds. Building off last year’s kindness challenges, I would encourage you to considering making a resolution this year to focus on others. Research has shown that many people are happier when they focus on others. This can take the form of simply smiling more
at people you pass in the community, or it can be a more concerted effort such as signing up to volunteer at a local food bank or care center. When you serve others, you are happy. When you really stop and consider the idea of happiness, you’ll find that it’s closely related to a person’s attitude. Having a good attitude tends to result in feeling happier and being happy also tends to improve one’s attitude. A good attitude becomes a mindset. If you have an attitude and mindset that considering and serving others results in a higher level of happiness, then happiness will naturally manifest itself in its truest form. As I wrote the monthly articles for last year’s kindness challenges, I found that I felt happier after completing each one. Kindness and happiness go hand and hand. Let’s begin 2020 on a happy note, with a positive attitude, a mindset of service, and the goal of using kindness to increase our happiness. I think that we can change our community, one smile at a time. “Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions.” ~Dalai Lama Submitted by Olivia Black | Age 15 | Marley Park Resident

Home Sweet Home When it comes to selling a home, there are more options available than ever before. For some, listing with a licensed REALTOR® is the best option. With this route, your agent will provide advice for staging and preparing the home for sale, hire a professional photographer, and market the home online to potential buyers both within the local community and worldwide. The agent will offer a cooperative commission split to other agents representing potential buyers. Your home will be available for showings and will typically take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to receive an offer. If the purchaser is financing, there will be an appraisal and the underwriting process will take 4-6 weeks. This is a great option for those with homes that are “show-ready,” those who have no specific time frame in which they need to sell, and those who are not simultaneously purchasing another home. For others, the option of selling to a cash buyer may be the best course of action. Cash buyers will typically make an offer sight-unseen, eliminating the need for cleaning, decluttering, and staging. They can close in as little as 14 days or extend close of escrow longer than a typical
Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
buyer and can change the closing date as needed. Cash buyers will often charge “service fees” to offset their carrying costs, however, these fees are often comparable to the total commission paid in a traditional sale. If you need help determining which route is best for the sale of your home, contact an experience REALTOR® and request a free, no-obligation consultation. An experienced agent will guide you on how to make sure you’re receiving the BEST possible cash offer for your home (hint: filling out a form online usually isn’t it) and provide a comparative market analysis so you can determine if cash offers are fair market value. If you decide to accept a cash offer, a REALTOR® who works with cash buyers can often represent your best interest at no cost to you by accepting a referral fee paid by the buyer. Whatever your unique goals and needs, you owe it to yourself to thoroughly explore all options. An experienced REALTOR® can help you do that. Spiritual Thoughts “Ouch, that hurts my ears!”
Our son could color for almost an hour without demanding attention or asking for validation that his drawing was “Picasso good”. When we adopted our girls, the noise level increased a hundred fold and movement, stimulation, and demand for attention was at unregistered levels.
This is a common phrase in our household. It is uttered after one of our twin girls lets out an ear-piercing scream of excitement, joy, fright, or basically any other emotion a toddler can experience.
At first, my husband and I felt we needed to squash this quality in them as quickly as possible. How do we make them as quiet and calm as our son? We can make them be quiet and introverted like us! So easy, right?
They also talk. Non-stop. All the time. Sometimes it makes perfect sense. Most of the time, it sounds like the ramblings of a beloved grandmother who knows perfectly well what she is saying but comes across as gibberish to the listener.
Then the wise words from pastor and TV personality, Mr. Rogers, hit us like a semi-truck when we were playing a video for our children.
I Like You as You Are
Needless to say, the word “quiet” does not characterize our house. It is loud and overstimulating most the time. I often daydream of the time when it was not this way. When it was just my husband, our biological son, and myself, the house was very peaceful, very Zen.
“I like you as you are!” he sang. What a philosophy to embrace! There is a God who likes me as I am! This same God who specifically designed me to be introverted and quiet had designed my daughters to be loud and exuberant for a reason. Now, my husband and I aspire to nurture the aspects of their personality that God instilled in them. Yes, they are loud. They are noisy. One day, they will use that exuberance to serve and worship their Creator in a powerful and unique way. They will be loud and proud for God. What a gift! Now, I have an important message to pass on to my girls. Do not let anyone change what God has designed you to be! Embrace who you are and be proud of it always. Let Grow Surprise A journalist in New York City once allowed her nine-year-old son to ride the subway alone. She quickly found herself labeled the “worst mom in America” by major media outlets. The experience inspired Lenore Skenazy to start her blog “Free Ranch Kids,” write a book by the same name, and establish the “Let Grow Foundation,” which aims to counter the culture of overprotection. I came across Lenore’s story on Facebook when our kids were toddlers and started keeping the “Let Grow” philosophies in mind.
If we are Facebook friends, you’ve probably seen me post with the hashtag #LetGrow. At age 9 and 7, our kids are allowed more freedoms than most of their peers, and this has been a conscious decision made my husband and me. A few weeks ago, I sent them to Basha’s on their

bikes because I needed a case of mason jars. They accomplished their mission but came home with wide mouth jars. I needed regular mouth jars but neglected to make that clear before they left. Naturally, I sent them back to exchange the jars. As it turns out, they had discarded the receipt and Basha’s wouldn’t allow an exchange without it. They came home with the original case of wide mouth jars, but in the process, they learned a multitude of valuable lessons. They learned the difference between wide and regular mouth jars. They learned the importance of hanging on to receipts. They learned where the service desk is in the store and that it’s where you go if you need to do a return or an exchange. I’ll pick up the regular mouth jars another time and probably just give away the wide mouth ones (contact me if you can use them!), but the minor inconvenience and expense of an extra case of mason jars pale in comparison to the priceless lessons learned and life experience gained by our kids through executing these tasks. We live in one of the safest cities in the United States. If you’re interested in implementing some of the #LetGrow ideas with your kids, look for the group called “LetGrow | Surprise” on Facebook. It’s a place for parents to swap stories and encourage each other with the goal of bringing the philosophies of the Let Grow Foundation to our local community. I hope to see you there! Winter Recipe While January in Arizona is not quite like the Januarys of my childhood in Northern Michigan, I still find myself craving a hot bowl of homemade soup this time of year. This recipe is something I adapted from an Olive Garden Zuppa Toscana copycat recipe several years ago in order to make it work for a low-carb, high-fat diet. If you’re eating low-carb, high-fat or following the “keto” diet, this recipe is perfect. If you prefer more carbohydrates, you may add potatoes or simply serve it with a slice of warm bread and butter.
Bring the broth to a simmer, reduce the heat to medium-low, and cook until kale is tender, about 10 minutes. • Remove the soup from the heat, stir in the cream, and season with salt and pepper to taste. • Ladle into soup bowls and serve. (If you plan to freeze the soup for future use, I recommend adding the cream after re-heating.) Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident
Creamy, spicy kale soup with Italian sausage. Yields: 6 servings 1 tablespoon olive oil 2-pounds Italian sausage (mild or spicy) 1-pound bacon ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes 6 cloves garlic, minced (or more – garlic should be measured with the heart) 1 large onion, diced 4 cups chicken broth 2 bunches of kale, finely chopped 2 cups heavy cream • To a large pot over medium heat, add the olive oil. • Brown the sausage until no longer pink. • Add the red pepper flakes, garlic, and onion and cook, stirring often, until the onions are translucent, and the garlic is fragrant, about 4 minutes. • Add bacon (pre-cooked and chopped). • Add the chicken broth and kale. Decorator’s Corner Out with the Gray, in with the Blue Gray has been all the rage for several years now, along with mostly white and cream-colored accents, but current trends are leaning toward adding some color to the mix…and that color is blue! This month’s Decorator’s Corner is brought you by Marley Park resident, Heather Gow. After finding inspiration from Pinterest, Heather decided to redecorate the nursery in their home. She found the ceiling light fixture and curtains at Target and the picture frames at HomeGoods. The toy cubby is from Ikea and the teepee is from Amazon. The crown jewel of this room, the blue geometric rug, is from Rugs USA. Heather says the blue rug really made the room come together and gave it a warm feeling that is sometimes missing without a little color. If you have a room in your home that you love, show it off! Email details and a photo to Christie@AZLifestyleTeam.com and it may be featured in a future issue of The Front Porch Magazine. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident

Pet of the Month Bailey (tan) and Bentley (gray) are both Shih Tzus and are a little over three years old. When we found Bailey, it was love at first sight! We weren’t even looking for a dog; in fact, we had only cats up until this point, but had talked about getting a dog in the future. When my husband asked to hold her, I was shocked because it meant he was serious about bringing home this dog. I started frantically Googling Shih Tzus to see how big they get and how they do with cats (we have two) to see what we were getting ourselves into. We brought home two pounds of energy, sass, and unconditional love that day.
parks as fast as their little legs will take them. They love meeting new people and have “helped” us meet many of our neighbors as they attack them with kisses. If you see us around Marley Park, come say hi. We’d love to meet you! Submitted by Jodi Hagerman | Marley Park Resident
A few months later, we were told about Bentley. We were torn about getting another dog so soon and potty training 2 dogs at once. He was a sweetheart, but we talked ourselves out of getting a second dog. Just as my husband was about to give him back, Bentley looked up at him with his big puppy-dog eyes and gave him this tiny little kiss. You can probably guess that Bentley came home with us! Immediately, we knew we made the right choice. They played, chased each other, and snuggled together from day one. Bailey and Bentley have been part of our family for about three years now. They are still best friends and get upset if they are separated. At home they never leave our side, play with their ridiculous number of toys, and chase each other (and the cats) around the house. Their favorite activities are going for walks and running through the neighborhood Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
