Holiday Hosting Gathering together with your loved ones to enjoy the cheer and fun of the season is great, but don’t you wish there were ways to make it easier and less stressful to put on a festive celebration?

Luckily, there are. You can have a blast hosting family and friends - and even enjoy the prep and cleanup - by following a few easy principles.

Here are ideas for keeping your next holiday party merry and bright from start to finish.

1. Create the kind of party you’d want to attend Start by asking yourself what makes a party a success. Love getting dressed up and sitting down at a fancy table for a formal dinner? If so, that’s the kind of holiday party you should host.

If you have friends who feel just like family, see if they’re willing to come early to help with the setup - and make sure to get them an extraspecial holiday goody bag to thank them!

3. Designate specific party rooms Since it may not be possible to make every room in your home 100% clean for the party, make sure the central rooms are in good shape, then mark some rooms “off limits” for partygoers, using festive garlands or funny signs, asking people not to enter.

If your front closet has no room for extra coats and bags, designate a guest room or office as a coat room so guests will know where to put their things when they arrive.

4. Add festive decorations

If not, think about what you’ve enjoyed at memorable celebrations from your past. What made it a hit? Was it a low-key, dress-as-youare party with cheerful music, kids’ crafts and informal games? Was the food simple but still tasty and comforting? Maybe there were party favors and gifts that were low-cost but silly and fun.

Create an immersive holiday atmosphere by decorating your entertaining space. Cover the room in festive decor, such as a decorated fireplace mantel, a special wall decked out in holiday lights, children’s artwork or a doorway framed in holiday greenery. The goal is to create a cheerful ambiance that delights your guests at every turn.

Make a quick list of the high points from different shindigs you’ve attended and see if you can include some of them in your party plan. The preparation will go much smoother and will be a whole lot more enjoyable when you’re entertaining in a way that you love.

2. Make it a family affair Get the whole family involved in party preparations by assigning tasks to kids that are appropriate according to their age level, such as making and putting up decorations, helping to create the perfect holiday playlist or decorating cookies.

Plant Replacement Marley Park suffered significant plant and tree loss due to the unprecedented summer heat. If your vegetation was affected, there is a deadline of December 31, 2023, to remove and replace dead plants and trees in the front yard and the area between the sidewalk and the street (back of curb area).

To simplify the process, until the end of this year, you can replace plants and trees without having to go through the Design Review Committee.

However, the vegetation being installed must be from the approved plant list for the specific area where you intend to plant it. Use the QR code to view the approved plant list.

If you have a dead tree in the front yard or back of curb area, it is mandatory to replace it with a tree that is at least 24 inches in box size.

Homeowners are responsible for replacing dead trees in both of these areas on their property.

Additionally, if there were previously trees on your lot that are now missing, it is advisable to replace those as well. You can use the “see more

dates” feature on Google Maps to view your yard in prior years for reference.

Please note that plants do not need to be replaced on a one-for-one basis. However, Marley Park Community Association (MPCA) residents are required to have at least one plant per 25 square feet in their front yard, with no more than 7 feet between each plant.

While replacing dead vegetation, it is crucial to ensure that your irrigation system is functioning correctly. It is your duty to water the vegetation throughout your entire property, including the back of curb area. Polar Express Childhood friendships often leave a lasting impact on our lives, shaping our interests, memories, and even inspiring creative endeavors. Such is the case with the heartwarming Christmas classic, The Polar Express, written by my dad’s childhood friend, Chris Van Allsburg.

My dad, Scott Thompson, attended Breton Downs Elementary School in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with Chris Van Allsburg in the 1950s.

Their friendship blossomed as they shared a common interest in building HO train tracks and constructing intricate miniature cities. The abbreviation “HO” stands for “half-O,” referring to the smaller size of the train models they used.

These miniature trains were more affordable and required less space than their larger O scale counterparts, causing their popularity to soar among children and adults alike.

Chris and Scott spent countless hours together in the basement of Chris’s childhood home, honing their skills and nurturing their imaginations. Chris taught Scott the art of creating these miniature worlds using 4x8 ft sheets of 3/4” plywood as the foundation for their miniature cities.

My dad remembers my grandfather, years later, repurposing the plywood by turning it upside down, adding a tablecloth, and using it to extend the dining table for their large family of twelve.

spending hours building model trains and creating miniature cities together, the bond formed between Chris and Scott left an indelible mark on both their lives. It was this shared experience that later inspired Scott to become a Civil Engineer, while Chris Van Allsburg went on to write the beloved Christmas classic, The Polar Express. Published in 1985, the book quickly captured the hearts of readers worldwide with its enchanting narrative and stunning illustrations.

For many families, The Polar Express has become a cherished holiday tradition. I remember the year it was published, as my then-three-yearold brother listened wide-eyed as the story was read aloud, creating magical memories that would last a lifetime. For the past decade, we have continued this tradition by taking our own children to Williams, AZ, every December to experience The Polar Express firsthand. Though the tradition has come to an end as our children have grown older, the spirit of The Polar Express lives on, and the bell still rings for them.

Decorating Competition Marley Park, a vibrant community known for its festive spirit, is gearing up for its highly anticipated Annual Holiday House Decorating Contest. On December 18th, a panel of judges will visit each registered home to evaluate the decorations. The judging will take place from 6 pm to 10 pm, giving homeowners ample time to ensure their displays are in impeccable condition. The judges will assess the creativity, craftsmanship, and overall impact of each decorated house to determine the winners.

The anticipation builds as the winners are announced. On December 19th and 20th, the Marley Park Community Association will distribute winner signs to the deserving participants. These signs will proudly display the achievement and recognition earned by the winners of the contest.
