Welcome to your December edition!

Well, we’ve come to the end of 2020. The year has somehow flown by and dragged on simultaneously. There has been tragedy and there have been silver linings. If you’ve experienced loss this year, please know that my heart goes out to you and your family. I sincerely hope that you can find peace during this holiday season.

For those who have not experienced the loss of a loved one this year, suffice it to say, it has still been a challenging year for everyone. School closures, job losses, and even food insecurity have plagued our communities right along with the virus. Despite the many challenges of the past year, I hope you have been able to find the silver linings, as there have been many. For our family, more quality time together, a slightly slower pace, and the opportunity to try new “covid-safe” activities have been positives in what at times has seemed a sea of negativity.

If you’d like to participate, please reach out via Facebook messenger or email at Christie@ AZLifestyleTeam.com by December 7th and I’ll add your name and address to the list. You’ll be assigned the name and address of another Marley Park neighbor so you can deliver an ornament to their front porch before the 10th.

It’s a little thing, but the exchange has always been one of my favorite holiday events and I’m looking forward to holding onto it this year, despite not being able to get together in person.

After all, in the words of ~L. M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables, “True friends are always together in spirit.”

The past year has certainly been marked by cancelations. Everything from spring break travel plans to holiday events has been canceled. There have been a few adaptations, however, that have allowed us to hold on to some of our favorite traditions.

This year marks the 6th annual Marley Park Ladies’ Ornament Exchange. Instead of getting together at Vogue Bistro, as has always been our custom, the exchange will be done “Front Porch style” this year.

On Our Cover

Krystal and Dante met in high school in Florida and started dating as teenagers. They dated for four years, enduring a long-distance relationship for two of those years while they attended colleges in separate states. They married at age twenty and will soon be celebrating their sixteenth wedding anniversary.

Dante’s career in the United States Air Force has taken them to bases in Florida, South Carolina (where both of their boys were born), New Mexico and, most recently, Luke AFB where they have been stationed for four years now. Krystal’s 12-year career as a labor and delivery nurse has been adaptable to the many moves required of a military family. She has worked in Women and Infant Services at Banner Del E Webb Medical Center since they came to Arizona. After renting a home in Surprise during their first year here, they knew they wanted to put down roots.

They chose to purchase a home in Marley Park because the green landscaping and abundant front porches are reminiscent of the southern charm where they grew up. They are hoping to retire here.

In this month’s cover photo Krystal, Dante, Mikel, and Maddox are standing under a plastic sprig of mistletoe. It’s a tradition they have held close to their hearts for sixteen years now, as Krystal reminisces about buying it from the local dollar store where they were stationed in South Carolina. “The first year Dante and I were married we had nothing. I remember going to the dollar store hoping I could afford a few things to make our small on-base house feel like ‘home’. This hanging mistletoe was $1.00, and it still means so much to me!”

Krystal and Dante collect nutcrackers now and have amassed an amazing collection throughout the years, many from all over the world. It’s that little plastic sprig of mistletoe that means the most to them, however. It is a reminder of how far they have come in their careers, the strength and longevity of their marriage, and their many blessings, with their two boys topping the list.

It is a reminder we can all take heed of this year.

The memories of struggle and of perseverance, are a reminder to be grateful for all the good times and the blessings in our lives. After all, without struggle, we cannot really appreciate all that we have.

Benefits Of Plants Flowers and plants are staples in many American homes, adding to the style and aesthetic of virtually any space. While the visual benefits of plants are widely embraced, many people are unaware of the ways plants can support mental and physical well-being, too.

Have you ever noticed that when you visit a garden or park, you instantly feel at ease? Greenery has the innate ability to calm and reduce stress. The sights and smells promote calm and a feeling of escape, which is particularly important during times of stress.

Because many people are now working from home and children are attending school

remotely, add plants to office and study spaces to reduce stress and make the space more welcoming.

Plants suitable for a home office should be easy to maintain, and will not take over the space.

For example, a hanging plant that won’t use up valuable desk space can add a welcome touch of green.

Plants can improve air quality by decreasing the levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air by up to 89%, according to a report by the NASA Stennis Space Center.

VOCs are commonly found in household items and paints, and include formaldehyde, benzene and trichlorethylene, among others.

Many green houseplants have the ability to: * Reduce carbon dioxide levels in a home * Control humidity levels * Reduce indoor pollution levels * Reduce airborne dust levels * Add oxygen to the air Plants are believed to calm and promote healing in people of all ages. In fact, just looking at pictures of plants can have a positive impact.

The reason? Scientists believe that the calming effects of nature images can reduce cortisol levels and improve mood, effectively speeding up the healing process.

The power of plants is incredible. Whether you bring plants into your own home to promote calm and wellness, or you gift to a loved one as a special surprise, greenery is a wonderful way to elevate a space in numerous ways.

Perspectives of a Teacher Mom The holidays are near! It has me thinking about some of the more interesting gifts that I have received as a teacher. Any teacher will tell you that gift cards are a teacher’s best friend.

Most teachers could also tell you that they have perfected their award-winning acting skills, while accepting gifts that are not our favorites. I have been on the business end of some incredibly unique, odd, or downright bizarre presents, throughout my career. Though they may not always be gifts that I would have requested, they have maintained a stronger presence in my memory, than the very sought-after gift card.

I am thankful that I learned, early on, that whatever present a child wants to give me, I had better be sure to bestow my best appreciation upon them. It is so important for children to be able to give gifts to important people in their lives.

If my student makes a present for me, buys it with their own meager funds, or even takes it from home (without permission...yep...I’ve gotten those), then that little token means so

much more than the very best gift card. Having a student want to be a part of giving me a gift, means way more than the gift itself.

So, having said all that, I’d love to provide you with some ideas for your child’s teacher, for this holiday season, since my non-teacher friends are always asking my opinion on what their child’s teacher might like.

First, ask your child’s opinion. My students know me pretty well. Ask them, and they will tell you my favorite coffee place, sport, candy, and color, without breaking a sweat. I will bet your child knows bunches about their teacher too! Next, if you choose a store bought present, for your child’s teacher, (thanks!) let your student add some sort of personal flair to it (homemade card, let the student wrap it, or ask them to write something in a store bought card). Finally, if you go for the big win with the gift card (go for it!), just know how much we teachers appreciate that you made that effort for us.

Happiness Matters In the last month it seems that I have done the opposite of relaxing. My classes have gotten more stressful and I have been working more at my part time job. I have noticed that as the holiday season is fast approaching, we just get busier. However, I have found several different ways to relax. I found a few moments here and there to relax. For example, I bought a couple new books, and took time to read those. I went out with friends and watched a few (maybe more than a few) episodes of The Office. I hope that all of us took the time to relax and increase our own personal happiness. Now onto this month’s challenge, the last one of the year.

At the conclusion of this year, I know that I have become happier through these different exercises and challenges. I have enjoyed the challenge and loved the results. I think that the best way to wrap up the year is to see all that we truly must be joyful about this holiday season.

If we all create a list of all the things, places, people, ideas, that bring us joy, we will notice how much we truly have and how happy we

can be. No matter our circumstances, we can be joyful!

To do this seemingly impossible task, I think it would be beneficial for us to take five minutes every day to make mini lists. Every day I make a list of the stuff I hope to accomplish that day, and I should make a joy list. Make a list of simple things: I woke up on time, my mom made me breakfast, I got hot chocolate on my way to school, I went to Target, I saw my best friend, and I got to take a nap.

That is just one example of a list that I have made in the past, and we should do this every day. Thinking of things that make us happy helps further that happiness.

Home Sweet Home In the second half of this year, the housing market surged with activity. Today, real estate experts are looking ahead to the winter season and the forecast is anything but chilly. As Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist for the National Association of Realtors (NAR), notes, “It will be one of the best winter sales years ever.” The typical winter slowdown in the housing market is simply not on the radar.

While today’s historically low mortgage rates are expected to remain low, they will not be this low for much longer. This could be the last chance for homebuyers to secure such low rates, and they are ready to act. In a recent article, Bankrate explained, “If you’re looking to buy a home… expect mortgage rates to remain low into 2021.

However, the possibility of rates falling to 2.5 percent or lower has faded as the U.S. economy has rebounded.” If we continue to see low interest rates, we will continue to see hopeful buyers on the hunt for their dream homes. Yun confirmed, “The demand for home buying remains super strong…And we’re still likely to end the year with more homes sold overall in

2020 than in 2019…With persistent low mortgage rates and some degree of a continuing jobs recovery, more contract signings are expected in the near future.”

The challenge, however, is the lack of homes available for sale. With that in mind, all eyes are on homeowners to see if they will sell this winter or wait until spring. Danielle Hale, Chief Economist for realtor.com, says it is best for sellers to capitalize on this moment sooner rather than later. “We currently see buyers sticking around in the housing market much later than we usually do this fall. If that trend continues, we will see more buyers in the market this winter, too.

So, this winter is likely to be a good time to sell.”

With buyers ready to stay active this winter, sellers who want to close a deal on the best possible terms shouldn’t wait until spring to put their homes on the market. Cybersecurity Personal cybersecurity is just as important as personal physical security. Just as you check to make sure your front door is locked, check some of these aspects of your digital front door.

Cybercrime is on the rise. It is consistently in the news. During holiday time, take extra precautions to protect yourself and your digital security.

When using personal devices such as phones, tablets, and computers, enable log in security such as a passcode, fingerprint, or facial recognition. Do not connect to public wi-fi unless using a VPN (Virtual Private Network); if needed, do a web search for ‘best free VPN’.

Be sure to create strong passwords and do not reuse passwords on multiple devices/accounts.

Use a password manager; if needed, do a web search for ‘best free password manager’. Set up auto back-up, two-factor authentication, device finder, and auto system updates. Use an anti-virus protection software on your computer; if needed, do a web search for ‘best free anti-virus’.

In addition to personal devices, beware of phishing scams. Do not give out personal information to strangers. For example, if someone texts, emails, or calls from your bank, do not reply, or talk with them.

Instead, hang up and call your bank directly to inquire and report any suspected illegal activity.

Generally, much of your personal information is already out there. It’s relatively easy for criminals to find out where you work, your name, address, whether you own your home, etc. Social media posts and photos can also give strangers clues about your personal details. Be aware that someone could contact you with this information pretending to be legitimate.

Do not click links in text messages or emails. If you need to click an email link, first hover over the link with the cursor. The link address will appear at the bottom of your screen. If it doesn’t look right, do not click the link.

Just like locking your front door will not guarantee your physical security, following these protocols will not guarantee your cybersecurity, but some prevention is better than none. Stay digitally safe, Marley Park!

Seasonal Work Ready for a new gig? With the holidays around the corner, many businesses are offering seasonal work. It’s not just for people looking to make a few extra dollars. It’s a little known fact that some employers often end up offering some seasonal workers a permanent role after the holidays are over. If you’re interested in the idea of leveraging seasonal work into a meaningful career at a company with great benefits, here are some tips and insights to keep in mind as you start filling out those applications.

Look beyond retail: Seasonal work offers opportunities that go well beyond operating a cash register. Do your best to show everyone that you’re a great employee and colleague. That means showing up on time, being willing to go above and beyond, and bringing a positive, can-do attitude to work every day.

Looking for a job that pays great and has benefits such as health insurance, vacation time and pension benefits isn’t easy. But for many workers, seasonal work can provide a path to bigger and better things.

Traditions

This has been a year of uncertainty, a year of changes, a year of cancelations and disappointments. One thing that will remain steady though, is your annual Marley Park Christmas ornament that will be arriving on your doorstep very soon! They will be delivered to every home in Marley Park, Homestead at Marley Park, and Christopher Todd Communities at Marley Park.

This will be the 7th year that my family and I have commissioned the ornament based on a different architectural home style in Marley Park.

The tradition is reminiscent of the ornaments my brother and I collected as children. I collected the Hallmark Cinnamon Bears, an adorable ensemble of ceramic bears,

each sporting a different holiday-themed item‌ candy cane, red stocking cap, sprig of holly, etc.

My brother collected the Hallmark locomotive train series, each stamped with the year. We still get them out with our holiday dĂŠcor every season.

The annual Marley Park ornaments are a gift of neighborly love from our family. Whether you are new to Marley Park or have been collecting the ornaments for years, we truly hope they bring a smidgen of joy to your home this holiday season.

Spiritual Thoughts

I did not understand how much of a gift a child was until I gave birth to my son. My pregnancy was a miracle in itself. I feared I was never going to get to carry a child of my own. Struggling with infertility, my husband and I had assistance from a reproductive health center to get pregnant.

After every heart-breaking negative pregnancy test, we finally got our positive. That very day, the celebrating began even though my son was no larger than a pencil tip.

The day of the delivery I was filled with new mom jitters. How was I going to keep this little person alive? Was he going to be in good health? What happens if he does not hit all his first month milestones? When do I get to teach him all I want him to know? What if he does not listen?

How are we going to pay for his college? Can he stay where he is for a few more months until we figure this out?

My beautiful boy arrived and was placed on my chest. With every little breath he took each one of my butterflies subsided. It was as if the nurse

had placed an immaculately wrapped present on my chest and it was the very thing I had been asking for my whole life, resting quietly on me.

When I became a mother, I understood the miracle of Christmas on a much deeper level.

I felt the excitement and anticipation of Mary and the nervous energy of Joseph. I envisioned the exhausting labor that took every ounce of strength Mary had. I see Him there, the Gift of gifts, wrapped in swaddling clothes in the comforting arms of Mary. Then, goosebumps appear all over as I realized I felt as Mary felt in that priceless moment.

Yet her precious gift was not just for her and Joseph. He was meant as a gift to the whole world! The angels roared in Heaven, the shepherds danced in the fields, and the wise men bowed in humility to the most precious gift given to humanity! That is something to celebrate!

Teen Time

Happy December! We have reached the end of 2020, and I think we can all easily say that this has been a wild ride. I do not think anyone pictured the year going this way. This New Year’s celebration is arguably going to be one of the most enthusiastic yet. There are plenty of things to do this month though, especially if you are a student like me. Finals are coming up, it is the end of the semester, we have family to reach out to, people to find gifts for, and activities that we all want to get done.

While I could say something about New Year’s resolutions, not many people keep those anyway.

So instead of a New Year’s resolution (or in addition to), I encourage you to make a list of activities that you want to do this month and work on getting them accomplished. And I don’t mean things like do laundry, decide gifts, finish homework, or clean the house for guests (though if those are your “fun” activities, more power to you, my friend). Instead, find things that you can do in your house or around your community to build up your spirits and the spirits of those around you.

I will share some of my hopes for this month: I want to go ice skating. No idea how it will happen, but that is my goal. I also plan to decorate cookies, look at holiday lights, and make gifts for my friends and family. My family celebrates Christmas, so there are plenty of traditions that we have that we will likely partake in once more this year, but I want you to look at some things you might want to do this month to boost your spirits. We will see what this next year brings us, but let’s do our best to make this last month a good one.

2. Offer to pick something up

Offering to get some groceries or a prescription for an older person can make their lives a lot easier. Don’t wait to be asked for help, as someone living alone may be reluctant to reach out. Just call and say, “I’m heading out to the store - can I pick something up for you?”

3. Help them stay safe Make sure any vulnerable person you know has face masks, hand sanitizer and the ability to order or ask for what they need. Mask up and offer to help them sanitize their doorknobs and phone after you drop by with a delivery. Help them use video conferencing to communicate with family members or friends.

4. Find ways to keep them engaged Drop by with a care package containing things they might like to do: a jigsaw puzzle, a deck of cards, large print books or crosswords. If you’re a good cook or have a green thumb, bring them a sample of your latest dish, offer to help with yard work, or bring them a plant that’s easy to care for - and that gives you a reason to stop by to check on them next time.

5. Be their tech support To communicate with the outside world, older people may have to rely on smartphones, computers or tablets that can sometimes be complicated or confusing to use. Teach them how to use apps like Zoom, set up a charging station for their phone or tablet, reboot devices so they run better - or just ask if they’re having any problems accessing their email or using their phone.

Making a regular connection, especially with someone who lives alone, can have a huge impact on their overall well-being.

Samurai Sudoku for December Samurai sudoku puzzles consist of five overlapping sudoku grids.
