December 2019
Welcome to your December edition! Santa Clause is coming to town…and Marley Park…a little earlier this year! The 5th annual Photos and Cookies will likely have already taken place by the time you’re reading this, as it has been scheduled for December 1st in order to allow enough time for folks to get their photos made into cards and dropped in the mail. If you missed this year’s event, be to sure to keep an eye out for 2020 event information starting in October in The Front Porch group on Facebook (TheFrontPorchGroup.coom). The date and time of sign-up is announced well in advance, so everyone has a fair shot of securing a spot before it sells out. For those of you who have made the Photos and Cookies with Santa event an annual tradition, I can’t wait to see your adorable littles with The Big Man himself! As a local REALTOR®, I take pride in being able to refer the best people for
anything and everything neighbors might need. Knowing the REAL Santa Clause personally is the crown jewel of my referral resource list and the annual Photos and Cookies with Santa event the one I enjoy planning the most. I’ve loved watching our kids…and yours…grow up seeing Santa every year and experiencing the magic of the season in a way that only happens in Marley Park! This issue marks the end of the third full year of The Front Porch Magazine being delivered to the mailboxes of Marley Park neighbors. We had more neighbors contribute content for our pages in 2019 than any other past year, making the magazine even more truly BY neighbors and FOR neighbors. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed this year, and especially to those who took on the commitment of writing monthly columns. Your time and talents are appreciated by all!

On Our Cover
Our December cover model is none other than 15-year-old Marley Park resident, Olivia Black. If you’ve been reading the articles in The Front Porch magazine this year, you’ve undoubtedly read Olivia’s monthly Kindness Matters column. In our ongoing quest to make the magazine FOR neighbors and BY neighbors, we happily accepted Olivia’s offer to write a few articles for The Front Porch late last year. A few articles lead to the idea of Olivia becoming a monthly contributor in 2019 with the theme of advocating ways to spread kindness in our community. Olivia loved the idea and happily committed to writing an article every month for the entire year. I’m not sure how many 15-year-olds could commit to such a long project and stick with it, but Olivia never failed to send in her article every month. Olivia says she really enjoys writing and liked the idea of becoming a published author. If you’ve read her work, you already know that she’s an outstanding young woman who is wise beyond her years. When asked to describe her favorite part of the year-long project, Olivia says “I loved seeing
people be more kind and having families get more into it. I really feel like it changed our community.” If we are lucky, we’ll get to see more of Olivia’s work in the future, as I’m hoping I might be able to convince her to commit to another monthly column for 2020. If you or another member of your household is interested in becoming a monthly contributor as well, please reach out! We are always looking for neighbors to share their unique talents, knowledge, and perspectives on the pages of The Front Porch magazine and we welcome submissions from neighbors of all ages and walks of life. Be sure to check out Olivia’s final installment of the Kindness Matters project in this month’s issue, which outlines a full kindness calendar for the month of December. Follow the calendar and you’re sure to end 2019 on a positive note! Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident

‘Twas The Night Before Christ ’Twas the night before Christmas, Marley Park, the place. The neighborhood had on it’s holiday face. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there! Georgia, Corrine and Eugene were tucked in their beds, While visions of sugar plums danced in their heads. The neighbors on Dahlia in kerchiefs and caps, Had just settled down for their long winter naps; When over Marley Park there arose such a clatter, Folks sprang from their beds to see what was the matter. The cloud-covered moon that shown down from the sky Gave off no more light than a wee firefly. There were shivering reindeer out there on the ground And one held a map and a lantern he’d found. “Hello there,” cried one deer, “Just where might we be? In jolly old England? Or Scotland, could be.” An Alexandria resident piped up to say, “You’re mistaken, you deer, ‘tis the good U.S.A. Tis the state of the sun and this is called Marley. It’s just about Christmas – You’ve come none too early!” The reindeer then snorted and told of their plight “We were scouting for Santa in England tonight.” 6 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
It happened in Liverpool – They got lost in the rain. This seemed like a difficult thing to explain. It drizzled in London and poured over Wales. They were caught in a wind and led by their tails. When they looked down and saw they were over “Moon Ridge,” They thought that the sign had spelled “London Bridge.” From the top of the White Tanks they peered down on them all: Valentine, Columbine and then Aster as well; Dreyfus, Windrose, and Old Oak . . . “Oh, my,” Said one of the reindeer, “Just where can we be? They had circled what they thought was Big Ben in source; It was really the Heritage Club on Founders Park Boulevard of course! “Straights of Dover ahead,” Cried on deer with delight, But, alas, ‘twas the pool in the dark of the night. The neighbors on Andora looked up in dismay. “What if Santa gets lost and ruins our day?” Then everyone went to the Heritage Club to meet – How could they clearly light up each street? They had to guide Santa to Marley Park that night.

tmas Without him, the children’s day wouldn’t be bright. Then Marley Park residents came up with the answer. They’d solve the dilemma of Dasher and Dancer. “We’ll have a LUMINARY with the streets all aglow; We’ll put paper bags out, row upon row. With candles inside, they will brightly shine along all the sidewalks in a very straight line. Weigh the bags down so they won’t blow away, And Santa will find us on this Christmas Day.” The residents rushed to their homes in a flurry to set up the Luminary – They had to hurry! When the bags were outside with the candles all lit, The neighbors all went to their living rooms to sit. They heard tiny sleigh bells, the patter of feet,
and there was some clatter out there on the street. A jolly old fat man, so lively and quick, We knew in a moment, it must be St. Nick. He said not a word, but went straight to his work. He stopped at each house – not one did he shirk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, He nodded, and from Marley Park he rose. He sprang to his sleigh to his team gave a clap, And away they all flew, like the sand from a trap. But I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight, “Merry Christmas Marley Park, I’ve had it tonight!” Written by Diane Williams | Marley Park Resident

Kindness Matters To end this year’s Kindness Matters project, I’d like to suggest following this kindness calendar for the month of December. Of course, you can add or edit according to what works for you, but the point is to try to do at least one deliberate act of kindness each day. My hope is that you’ll end 2019 on a positive note and be off to a great start for an even kinder 2020. It has been a pleasure sharing the concept of kindness with you this year. Thank you for participating! 1. Tape money to a vending machine. 2. Hand out a compliment card. 3. Donate food to a food pantry. 4. Make a card for your mail carrier. 5. Candy cane bomb a parking lot. 6. Take supplies to an animal shelter. 7. Put change in the donation bucket. 8. Send a hug in the mail. 9. Pick up litter as you see it. 10. Home Sweet Home Home builders have been in high gear in our neighborhood this year as multiple new home builders have started selling inventory in Marley Park and the new Homestead at Marley Park. There is truly something for everyone in the vast array of products being offered, from specs to fully customizable homes and from large homes on large lots to smaller homes with cozy, easycare backyards.
If you’re considering purchasing a new construction home but wondering how to balance selling your current home with the average build time of six months on a new build, I recommend contacting an experienced REALTOR® to discuss your options. If you don’t own your current home outright, you may need to sell your existing home first before the builder will break ground on your new home. For most people, this would require finding temporary housing while your new home is under construction. There is another option, however. Speak with a local REALTOR® who works closely with the largest home buyers in Arizona. These buyers
Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine
will make a competitive cash offer for your home and allow a flexible closing date when purchasing new construction. An experienced agent can negotiate with the builder so that they will break ground on your new home while your current home is under contract with a cash buyer, allowing you to stay in your existing home throughout construction. In order to facilitate this type of dual transaction, it is important that you speak to a licensed REALTOR® before visiting the new build sales offices. Builders will not allow you to have your own representation unless your agent accompanies you on the first visit. A REALTOR® who is representing you on your new home purchase may also be able to sell your existing home at zero commission when selling to cash buyer. This would allow you to have an experienced agent representing your best interests throughout both transactions without costing you anything. You owe it to yourself to explore your options so you can make your dream of purchasing a new home a reality. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | REALTOR® | Arizona Lifestyle Team | HomeSmart

Spiritual Thoughts Imagine a world where people were not forgiven for their mistakes. You speak harshly to your husband in a moment of stress…relationship over. You get pulled over for speeding…kiss your license goodbye. You arrive five minutes late for work…immediate termination. You sneak a grape from the grape bag as you are waiting in line to pay for them at the grocery store…life sentence without parole. This was the kind of crazy world in which I was living in my own mind until just recently. I would analyze every mistake I ever made and put myself into a shame prison of my own making. Perfectionism is exactly that…a prison. There was no moving forward from harsh words spoken, appointments forgotten, errors at work, awkward moments in conversations, or selfish mistakes in parenting. Each one would give me
another life sentence in my thoughts. My punishment would be to relive each blunder over and over again in my mind with no way to change what happened. The sting of being imperfect while infected with the disease of perfectionism could only be numbed by one thing for me. I would go out looking for people who have made worse mistakes than me and think, “Well, at least I did not mess up as bad as that guy.” Now, not only am I feeling constant shame for my mistakes, but I am judgmental too. Fantastic combination! This is where my hero came along and interceded for me by providing the only antidote to perfectionism…grace. When I opened my heart to Jesus about my perfectionism and let Him begin to work in me, I realized there was no mistake that I could make that would not be forgiven. He said I was lovable in my imperfection and my mistakes were outshined by His loving grace. If the Son of God could forgive me, why couldn’t I forgive myself? He unlocked the prison of perfection that held me in bondage. I was finally allowed to step out in freedom and just be me. Ironically, now that I have the freedom to just be me, I make a lot less mistakes. Grace is a beautiful medicine. Submitted by Josie Flancbaum | Marley Park Resident

Traditions
When I was a child, my brother and I collected annual Hallmark ornaments for Christmas. I collected the Cinnamon Bears, an adorable ensemble of ceramic bears, each sporting a different holiday-themed item…candy cane, red stocking cap, sprig of holly, etc.. My brother collected the locomotive train series, each stamped with the year. We still get them out with our holiday décor every season. One of my favorite aspects of Marley Park has always been the diverse architectural styles of the homes here. In 2014, I decided it would be fun to create an annual Christmas ornament to commemorate the wide array of homes that make our neighborhood so unique.
Whether you are new to Marley Park or have been collecting the ornaments for years, please keep an eye out on your Front Porch for the 2019 ornament soon. They will be delivered to every home in Marley Park, Homestead at Marley Park, and Christopher Todd Communities at Marley Park. The ornaments are a gift of neighborly love from our family and we truly hope they bring a smile to your face as you hang them on the tree each year. We hope you enjoy this fun tradition, as well as all the other holiday traditions that make Marley Park a unique and magical place to celebrate. If we haven’t met in person yet, please reach out! I’d love to have coffee or a glass of wine at local spot…or on the front porch. Happy Holidays, from our family to yours! Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident

Winter Recipe Festive Kale Salad
Kale. It’s packed full of nutritional value, but… no one really likes it. There are even memes passed around on social media joking about how bad it is. One such meme says, “Cooking Tip: If you stir coconut oil into your kale, it makes it easier to scrape into the trash.” Ha! Well, if you’ve been avoiding kale, you’re really missing out. This recipe for Festive Kale Salad might just change your mind about the stuff!
Directions: Remove the kale from the stalks, discard the stalks, and tear the leaves into small pieces by hand. 1.
Thoroughly wash and drain the leaves.
2.
Put the kale into a large bowl with a lid, pour the entire bottle of salad dressing over the leaves, place the lid on the bowl and shake so the leaves are thoroughly covered in the dressing.
Ingredients: 1 bunch of kale 1 bottle of salad dressing; vinaigrettes work best 5 oz container of shaved parmesan cheese 1 cup of pine nuts 1 cup pomegranate arils (seeds) Croutons to taste (optional)
3.
THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP. Store the bowl in the refrigerator overnight. This allows the kale to marinate and soften in the dressing. Kale is a tough green so this step is the key to making it into a yummy salad. 4. Just before serving, add shaved parmesan, pine nuts, pomegranate arils, and croutons. Toss.
All Relief, No THC
This is the perfect salad for any holiday or special occasion and always gets rave reviews whenever I make it. It’s easy to make and if you’re lucky enough to have leftovers, it will keep in the refrigerator for several days since you don’t need to worry about the greens becoming soggy like in other salads. Enjoy and Happy Holidays! Submitted by Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident

Artist’s Corner
This beautiful watercolor was painted by Marley Park resident, Joe Morris. Joe’s career as an art director for a medical publishing group kept him active as an artist. He painted this in the 1980s when he attended a watercolor class to sharpen his skills. It caught my eye and seemed perfect for the December issue because it reminds me so much of the rural neighborhood in Michigan where I grew up. An evergreen, a snow-capped wooden fence, and a vast snow-covered field with forest in the background is a familiar sight from my childhood. Thanks for sharing and for bringing back fond memories for me, Joe! Christie Giannetto | Marley Park Resident

Funny Moment Have Some Humor I asked my husband to return a blouse for me to Walmart... I saw it on my way to the check out, thought it was cute and grabbed it, but didn’t try it on. When I got around to trying it on later at home it was way too big and looked like pajamas, hence, the reason I asked my hubby to return it for me. On my way to work the next day I told him over the phone where the shirt was in the closet, and where the tags were. To make a long story short, he ended up returning my ACTUAL PAJAMAS (with the tags for the shirt)! I don’t know what’s funnier, that my husband took the wrong clothes

back (I didn’t even get those jams at Walmart) or that the Walmart associate took them back! Of course, because my husband is a man of integrity, he took the correct blouse back the next day and explained to them what had happened. They insisted on giving him more money for the blouse and said it went against company policy to take something without giving a refund for it. My husband said he was just glad he restored his good name with Sam Walton and Company! I kind of miss those pajamas though… Submitted by Julie Engstrom | Marley Park Resident

Game Night
Feeling disconnected from members of your own family lately? You’re not alone - a 2018 study found that 60% of parents with kids between 4 and 18 described their daily lives as “hectic.” Sadly, the survey also found that today’s families only spend about 37 minutes of quality time together per weekday. What’s a solution? Gather around the table. Set aside the gadgets and gather around the table together for a good old-fashioned family game night. Even if you start out with a monthly game night with the kids, chances are it will soon be popular enough to enjoy more often. Putting your family’s game night on the calendar will ensure everyone keeps their schedules clear for a night of fun - and connection - all together. Today’s games provide a huge range of choices to suit any age range, interests or gaming styles, so there’s truly something for every family to explore and enjoy together. The added benefits will astound you: Kids can learn important lessons about sportsmanship and fair play, develop communication and collaboration skills, increase their fine motor, logic and strategic thinking abilities - and have a blast doing it. When was the last time you all just let loose and enjoyed laughing and being silly together? There’s no better way for kids and parents to relax and have fun together than a game that brings out the best in everyone.
Villainous are especially fun because they can be expanded and played with other characters in the series. Players can choose from a treasure trove of villains including Maleficent, the Queen of Hearts, Ursula and more. A brain-bending game for all generations, Invasion of the Cow Snatchers is an ‘out of this world’ introduction to playing games at different levels of skill while challenging players as they learn how to follow directions and maneuver their flying saucer around obstacles. Though designed to be a one-player game, others can join in on the fun too by collaborating to solve puzzles together and taking turns being the magnetic “UFO.” This holiday season is a perfect opportunity to turn off the phones for an hour or two, enjoy hanging out together this winter, and reconnecting as a family.
For a fun twist on everyone’s favorite movies, Disney Villainous: Evil Comes Prepared allows two to six players age 12 and up to choose a sinister character to play: Scar from “The Lion King,” Ratigan from “The Great Mouse Detective,” or Yzma from “The Emperor’s New Groove.” Players put strategy and logic to the test to achieve their own diabolical goals - and stop other villains from completing their own dastardly objectives.
