Welcome to your November edition!

November is usually the start of the most hectic time of year for me. It’s normally “Event Planning” season non-stop from Halloween until New Year’s Day. There’s the annual Marley Park Thanksgiving pot-luck, the annual Photos with Santa event for Marley Park residents, and my husband’s company Christmas party, which normally has over 250 guests…plus all the typical responsibilities that come with being a mom and making Christmas magical for the kids. This year feels different though… It has been a tough year for everyone, but there is a sense of peace and calm going into The Season that I haven’t felt in ages. The neighborhood Thanksgiving potluck has been cancelled, as has my husband’s company Christmas party. While it’s disappointing to miss out on these wonderful traditions of fun and fellowship, I’m truly looking forward to enjoying some quieter moments with my family. We’ve enjoyed Thanksgiving with neighbors at the Marley Park Heritage Club for the past seven years (five of which I have planned and organized), but it will just be my

husband, our kids, my parents, and me enjoying a quiet dinner together at home. Truthfully, it sounds heavenly! We’ll be missing out on several other cherished family traditions this year as well. The annual Celebration of Christmas play at Dream City Church in Phoenix, truly my favorite holiday event, has been cancelled. Even The North Pole Experience from Flagstaff has been cancelled. All of these cancellations are disheartening at first, but I’m finding that once I’ve settled into the changes, they are opening up space for new traditions, a more restful atmosphere, and quieter moments with family. Thankfully, however, the annual Photos with Santa event at the Marley Park Pool house IS happening this year, with some modifications to encourage social distancing. While I’m leaning into the changes, I’m glad there is one tradition that’s holding steady. To register for the event, please visit The Front Porch group on Facebook (TheFrontPorchGroup.com). As you navigate the changes in your own life this Season, keep in mind the words of Fred Rogers, “How many times have you noticed that it’s the little quiet moments in the midst of life that seem to give the rest extra-special meaning?” See you on The Front Porch!

On Our Cover

When you thank a veteran or active duty military member for their service, for what, exactly, are you thanking them? Certainly, for their willingness to put their life at risk to defend our country; but what about the other sacrifices that come with joining the military including frequent moves, being uprooted from one’s community, and being away from loved ones for extended periods of time?

Breezy, on our cover this month, has been an active duty member of the United States Air Force for nearly 21 years. She joined the Air Force at age 20 and has lived in Germany, New Mexico, Utah, North Dakota, Texas, and is currently stationed at Luke Air Force Base. She has deployed four times to Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, and again to Kuwait, from where she just returned on August 1st. The latter three deployments took place after Breezy’s two children, now ages 10 and 16, were born. In fact, Breezy and Michael, also a member of the USAF, have not been able to live together with their kids as a family since 2015. As a mother myself, I can think of no greater sacrifice than being away from one’s children for months at a time.

4 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

Breezy fell in love with Marley Park and bought a home here when she first arrived in December of 2017. Soon, she’ll be going back to Texas, where Michael, a Chief, currently works as a recruiter and plans to remain until retirement. She will be reunited long-term with him and their two kids for the first time in over five years, but says she hopes to return to Arizona someday and can see herself being a “snowbird” here. Breezy says “the military has given me the ability to provide for my family and obtain a bachelor’s degree. I’m also working on a master’s degree. The military has allowed me to show my kids, especially my daughter, that it’s ok to be a working mom. There are sacrifices you must make, but hopefully the kids will realize that they weren’t made lightly and were what was best for them and our family. I love putting on the uniform; I’m very proud of it.” We are proud of you, Breezy. Happy Veteran’s Day and thank you for your service. Decorator’s Corner The pandemic has had many negative impacts, but one positive has been that it has rekindled our family’s love of reading. The passion for it never went away, but there never seemed to be enough time. Since January, we have accumulated a LOT of books. Which is great, except, with the books beginning to pile high, our house was starting to look like a scene from Harry Potter… after the battle at Hogwarts.

To combat the clutter, we decided to turn the spare room into a library. However, builtins were expensive and too permanent. We still wanted the built-in look though; something seamless that would allow the books

to be the star. After an exhaustive search, we came to one simple conclusion: nothing could beat the IKEA Billy series. (Apparently, they sell one every 5 seconds!) IKEA furniture is very modular and allows for maximum versatility. The bookcases can be purchased in various heights, two width options, with or without doors, as well as with extension pieces. Additionally, the bottom area in the back is cut out so the case can rest flush against the wall without removing baseboards. We purchased five bookcases in the maximum height option (four wide, one narrow), a matching set of extensions since we have 9ft ceilings, and Oxberg doors. They were easy to assemble for this crafty, but not handy gal, and the perfect depth for storing books. We love the finished look and have been enjoying our library more than ever! Perspectives of a Teacher Mom Mistakes are inevitable as a parent. Although we like to hope that we will learn from the mistakes of our parents and raise our own children free of any blunders, we just end up making our own missteps anyway. I know of people who have experienced negative or traumatic childhoods who make it their life’s mission to ensure that their own children will not come anywhere close to the unfortunate events that shaped them. I also know of people who were blessed and well nurtured as they grew up, and now work overtime to establish those exact positive circumstances for their little ones.

Are either of those types of parents right or wrong? Will either be less likely to inflict errors upon the lives of their children? What about the parents who don’t plan their parenting at all, but just wing it, without much thought about their own childhood? The planner, the helicopter parent, the free range parent, the single parent, the introvert, the extrovert, the tough love parent, the over indulgent parent, the home school family, the military family, the no YouTube allowed mom, the grandma and grandpa having

to be parents, the organic-only parents, the cosleeping parents... I could mention types of parents for many pages, and still leave some out, but do you know what we all have in common? Come on, you know... it is that we all make mistakes when raising our families. Lots of them! Studies have shown that guilt is among the top emotions of most mothers, and it is easy to see why that could be. Whether we are competing against other moms or our own internal expectations, it is impossible to win in that type of prize fight. The stakes are too high to lose when it comes to our children. So, do we just accept that mistakes will happen? Do we try even harder to not make them? How do we make sure our children will be okay, despite our mistakes? We love them. We say sorry. We own our erroneous actions. We love them, we love them, and we love them. Submitted by Theresa DeLong Marley Park Resident

Happiness Matters “Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is relax.” ~Unknown

As we head full speed into the holidays, I still struggle to find time to do these simple challenges. However, I have had special opportunities to work on my outward perspective on life and focus on others. One of those opportunities came with the resuming of church services. Our church focuses on service to others, so I was able to regain that love of serving, and that has helped me become happier. I also joined another club on campus, and one of their main focuses is community service. As I focused on others this past month and a half, I have really enjoyed myself and found myself feeling happier. This month, I think the challenge is especially important because we are focusing on the craziness of the end of the year. Exams, holidays, family dinners, vacations, all loom over us these next crucial months, so here comes the challenge...

I have been thinking that most of us are too busy. We think that we can do all these things, but we are tired. I know that I am involved in too many things and that I am often too tired and too busy to relax. However, I think that finding time to relax will help us become happier. Everyone has some time that they can spare, and if you don’t, it’s time to clear your schedule. Relaxation is especially important to reinvigorate the soul and ease the mind and body. To increase our personal happiness, we must take time for ourselves, and just relax. Our relaxation is particularly important if we truly want to be happier. The more we put on our plate, the more stressed we get, and the more unhappy we become, even if we are unaware of it. Focus on your mental health and taking time for yourself, and you WILL be happier. “Your calm mind is the ultimate weapon against your challenges. So, relax!” ~Brynt Megill Submitted by Olivia Black | Age 15 Marley Park Resident

Home Sweet Home Many industries have been devastated by the economic shutdown caused by the pandemic. Real estate is not one of them. Mark Fleming, Chief Economist for First American, recently reported: “Since hitting a low point during the initial stages of the pandemic, the only major industry to display immunity to the economic impacts of the coronavirus is the housing market. Housing has experienced a strong V-shaped recovery and is now exceeding pre-pandemic levels.”

Buyer demand is still strong heading into the fall. ShowingTime, which tracks the average number of buyer showings on residential properties, just announced that buyer showings are up 61.9% compared to the same time last year. They went on to say: “Normally, real estate activity begins to slow down in the late summer, but this year it peaked in July, August, and into September.” There is one big challenge, however. Purchaser demand is so high, the market is running out of available homes for sale. Just last week, REALTOR.com reported: “Since the beginning of the COVID pandemic in March, nearly 400,000

8 Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

fewer homes have been listed compared to last year, leaving a gaping hole in the U.S. housing inventory.” The National Association of Realtors (NAR) revealed that, while home sales are skyrocketing, the inventory of existing homes for sale is dropping dramatically. Homebuilders are increasing construction, but they cannot keep up with the high demand. Bill McBride, founder of the Calculated Risk blog, in discussing inventory of newly constructed houses, notes: “The months of supply decreased to 3.3 months…This is the all-time record low months of supply.” What does this mean for sellers? Anyone thinking of putting their home on the market should not wait. A seller will always negotiate the best deal when demand is high, and supply is limited. That is exactly the situation in the real estate market today. Next year, when the pandemic is hopefully behind us, there will be many more properties coming to the market. Don’t wait for that increase in competition in your neighborhood. Now is the time to sell. Submitted by Christie Giannetto | REALTOR® | Arizona Lifestyle Team | HomeSmart

Community Cares Surprise Troop 194 was founded in 2014 and currently serves 28 scouts. Like many organizations, the troop was challenged with the task of finding a way to keep scouts engaged and safe during the pandemic. How could they continue to learn and serve their community in a safe manner? Enter the Little Free Library Project - a nonprofit organization that provides book exchanges in neighborhoods around the world. The scouts were able to work safely outdoors within their individual patrols of 6-8 scouts, while developing building skills and serving their community. Each patrol

The finished products are pretty amazing. One library will be housed at Mountain View Elementary School and one at Jumpstart Childcare in El Mirage. We are still looking for homes for the last two libraries. Once the four libraries are completed, they will be registered on the https://LittleFreeLibrary.org website. Spiritual Thoughts

My hands cover my face as if they will shield me from the horror that is in front of me on the television. I peek between my fingers to see if it is over yet. Nope. The presidential debate is still there. It is that time again. Election time. I dread the presidential campaign more than I dread trips to the dentist, my well-woman’s exam, a flat tire, completing my taxes‌you get the picture. If Christmas has an opposite, it is the presidential election.

Yet, I am a strong advocate for the American people to express their voice by voting. History is filled with hundreds of amazing stories of people fighting for their right to vote and, in turn, securing my right to vote. It is a right that I do not take for granted. The blood that was shed from the brave souls that sacrificed their lives so we can vote without fear is crying from the ground to us all. It demands that we contribute our voices, each and every one.

Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

Why, then, do I despise the election so much? In theory, I should be ecstatic to express my voice. The night before I vote should be a sleepless night of excitement and enthusiasm. But‌I have seen the worst in humanity during this time when it should bring out the best in humanity. Nevertheless, there is hope! If the American people understand that there is something bigger than the election, then it is worth it! If the American people understand that there is life beyond the issues happening in this country, then it is worth it! If the American people put their peace, joy, and hope in something bigger than a president, it is all worth it! I will gladly cast my vote as I do every election, not because I have hope in a candidate for president, or in any political party. I have no fear in the result of the election. The one who directs the sun and the moon to shine, who tells the stars to sparkle and the waves to roll, who gives me every breath in my body, He is my hope. He is infinitely larger than any election result. Submitted by Josie Flancbaum Marley Park Resident

Purchase A Paver In January 2015, I returned from my final deployment after 21 years of service to our country. My fiancé (now husband) and I decided to buy a home together. After months of looking at homes, we fell in love with Marley Park and decided to build a new home here. Since we were both close to retirement eligible status, we felt comfortable settling down without fearing of any unpredicted moves from the military, but, because I was still technically single, just a month after signing the contract for our home, I received orders to Montana.

As it turned out, I was in the process of undergoing tests for some medical issues and, much to our surprise, I found out I was 13 weeks pregnant. Luckily, my orders were cancelled due to the progression of my pregnancy. Suddenly, we were planning a wedding, the birth of our first born, and moving into our new home all at once. In February of 2016, just days before our baby girl was welcomed into the world, we signed our closing documents and made our home here in Marley Park official.

Estrella Publishing - The Front Porch magazine

Just as we were settling into our new home and into life as parents, the Air Force sent orders to PCS (permanent change of station) again; this time to Oklahoma. So, upon approaching 22 years of service to the USAF, I applied for retirement. I was denied the first time, but later approved, and I retired in November of 2016. My husband followed in January of 2017. On Father’s Day in 2017, I purchased 2 pavers in our Veterans’ Commemorative Plaza as a token to my husband that we have paved our next adventure through this community by building our family and our home. We are so happy we made the choice together for our future as a family. Submitted by Katherine Buchan Marley Park Resident Thank you for your service, Katherine and Matthew…and Happy Veterans’ Day!
